West Ham United vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
90' FT: WEST HAM 0 MAN CITY 0
Manchester City miss the chance to leapfrog Chelsea and join Manchester United on 24 points at the top of the table as they are held to a goalless draw at Upton Park. The statistics will suggest that the visitors dominated this game and should have won at a canter. But despite enjoying the bulk of the possession, for the most part they did not do enough with it in meaningful areas of the pitch. Samir Nasri forced Jussi Jaaskelainen into one good stop in the first half and Mario Balotelli volleyed over when it seemed easier to score. West Ham, though, overcame their lack of quality with tireless effort, gritty determination and defensive quality. They also did more with the little possession they enjoyed. Andy Carroll saw two efforts go narrowly wide and a volley from Yossi Benayoun struck the top of Joe Hart's crossbar. So City keep their unbeaten record at least, and they should be thankful for that: replays showed a third-minute strike from Kevin Nolan should have stood instead of being ruled out for offside.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
We are into the second of three minutes of added time.
90' MAN CITY SUBSTITUTION
Scott Sinclair replaces Samir Nasri for the visitors.
89' OVER THE BAR FROM TOURE
Yaya Toure twists and turns on the edge of the box to create himself some space before toe-poking over the crossbar.
86' SWITCH IN DEFENCE
O'Brien has gone to centre-back for West Ham, with Spence slotting in on the right side of defence.
84' CHANGES FOR BOTH SIDES
Carlos Tevez gets a fantastic ovation as he makes way for Javi Garcia. James Collins, who has been outstanding for the home side, is replaced by Jordan Spence.
82' WEST HAM BOOKING
George McCartney is shown the yellow card after a reckless tackle on Gareth Barry.
81' JAASKELAINEN SAVES AGAIN
Aguero fires in a dipping shot that Jaaskelainen palms away at his near post.
79' WEST HAM SUBSTITUTION
Andy Carroll is replaced by Carlton Cole. The goal drought continues for the West Ham man, but he's worked his socks off today. Kolo Toure rejoins the action.
77' KOLO TOURE NEEDS TREATMENT
Kolo Toure is down with a leg injury next to the City goal. It's not clear if it's cramp or more serious.
76' BRAVE BLOCK BY COLLINS
James Collins makes a brave block at the feet of Dzeko to repel a fierce shot from the big City striker.
72' WEST HAM SUBSTITUTION
The home side make their first change. It's Gary O'Neil for Mohamed Diame.
69' MAN CITY SUBSTITUTION
Mario Balotelli is replaced by Sergio Aguero, and does not look best pleased.
66' TEVEZ FIRES OVER
That's better from City. Clichy and Balotelli move the ball quickly inside to Tevez, who shoots over from a good position. He really should have at least hit the target there.
65' ATTACK AGAINST DEFENCE
West Ham cannot keep the ball at the moment. City are camped inside the visitors' half without looking particularly menacing.
64' POOR EFFORT FROM DZEKO
Yaya Toure's defence-splitting pass finds Tevez in space down the left. The cross is aimed for Dzeko, who is off balance as he hits a shot and it trickles harmlessly wide of the far post.
62' WEST HAM BOOKING
Benayoun is booked for a lunging tackle on Tevez.
61' CARROLL VOLLEYS WIDE
McCartney cuts inside his marker on the left and Carroll meets his inviting cross with an acrobatic volley which is only just wide.
60' HEADER WIDE BY NOLAN
Benayoun aims a cross towards the penalty spot, but Nolan misdirects his header and the effort, more off his shoulder than his head, goes well wide.
57' WEST HAM BOOKING
James Collins is cautioned for hauling back Edin Dzeko.
54' JAASKELAINEN GETS LUCKY
Jaaskelainen makes a real mess of a Tevez corner from the left, and having dropped the ball under no pressure is mightily relieved to see one of his defenders scramble the ball to safety.
51' TURNING THE SCREW
City have a four-on-four break, but a heavy first touch from Nasri allows Reid to come in and make a crunching tackle. The visitors continue to apply the pressure and Jaaskelainen keeps out a left-foot shot by Tevez.
49' COLLINS NEEDS TREATMENT
The trainer is on for James Collins, who appears to have a problem with his right ankle.
48' LOVELY SKILL BY TEVEZ
A wonderful turn by Carlos Tevez draws gasps of appreciation from both sets of fans. The final ball, though, is sadly lacking.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
City kick off the second half. Neither side has made any changes at the break.
45' HT: WEST HAM 0 MAN CITY 0
It may be goalless, but it's been an entertaining first half in which the home side have carried the greater threat, particularly in the early going. The Hammers should have been in front as early as the third minute, but Kevin Nolan's skilful volley was incorrectly ruled out for offside. Mohamed Diame and Andy Carroll have both gone close for Sam Allardyce's men and Yossi Benayoun has seen a shot hit the top of the crossbar. City's best effort came from Samir Nasri, whose stinging 25-uard drive was palmed away well by Jussi Jaaskelainen. The visitors got a grip of the match as the half wore out and will hope that Mario Balotelli's miss from close range does not prove costly.
45' OVERHEAD KICK OFF TARGET
Balotelli meets a cross from the right with an overhead kick which is only a yard or two wide of the right-hand upright.
44' WIDE FROM YAYA
Kolo Toure finds his brother Yaya, but the Ivorian shoots towards the near post and wide, instead of looking for a better-placed team-mate.
43' FINAL PRODUCT LACKING
I'm not sure who Roberto Mancini is berating now, but he is far from happy from what he is seeing out there. City have not been dominant, certainly, but they have played well enough. Jarvis collects a flick-on from Nolan, but there was nobody in the centre to get on the end of the cross.
39' WIDE AGAIN FROM BALOTELLI
Coming into this match, Mario Balotelli had attempted the most shots (21) of any player yet to score in the Premier League this season. The Italian fires wide again, taking his total to 24 by my reckoning.
34' BAD MISS FROM BALOTELLI
The flag stays down as Balotelli meets a free-kick from the left by Tevez, but much to Roberto Mancini's disgust the Italian volleys over from eight yards.
32' BALOTELLI VOLLEY BLOCKED
City make inroads into the Hammers box, but Balotelli's volley crashes against Benayoun and the resulting corner comes to nothing.
30' HOPE FOR THE HOME SIDE
West Ham are certainly up for this match and fancy their chances. The fact that City have yet to keep a clean sheet away from home this season suggests they are vulnerable.
26' NOT SO SUPER MARIO
Roberto Mancini is unhappy with what he has seen from Mario Balotelli so far and launches a verbal blast towards the Italy striker from the sidelines.
24' EASY FOR JAASKELAINEN
Tevez wins the ball back from the Hammers defence high up the pitch and tees up Dzeko, who fires tamely straight at Jaaskelainen from the edge of the area.
23' CARROLL GOES CLOSE
Carroll is so close to opening his account for West Ham, collecting the ball off Benayoun after winning the initial header and seeing his left-foot shot go a whisker wide of the post with Hart rooted to the spot.
21' MILES WIDE FROM TOURE
Yaya Toure tries an ambitious effort from all of 30 yards that has the fans behind the goal ducking for cover.
20' TOO HIGH FROM TEVEZ
City win a free-kick on the edge of the West Ham area. The angle is not favourable to Tevez and he curls the ball over the crossbar.
19' OFF THE CROSSBAR
West Ham are playing with confidence here. Jarvis collects a long pass to the left wing and crosses to the unmarked Benayoun, whose measured volley goes between the arms of Hart and strikes the top of the crossbar.
16' FINE DEFENDING FROM COLLINS
Tevez and Dzeko almost combine neatly, but James Collins makes an important clearing tackle at full stretch.
13' OVER FROM DIAME
Diame finds space after collecting the ball from Jarvis on the left. He cuts inside on to his right foot and shoots powerfully over the bar. That was very reminiscent of the midfielder's goal against Arsenal here last month.West Ham United
10' SAVE FROM JAASKELAINEN
Dzeko nods the ball down to Samir Nasri, who stings the palms of Jaaskelainen with a 25-yard drive. Dzeko heads wide from the follow-up, although the flag was up again for offside. Again, incorrectly, as it happened.
9' NOBLE IN THE WARS
Mark Noble is in need of treatment after blocking a shot from Edin Dzeko.
7' ALL HAIL KING CARLOS
Carlos Tevez is still warmly received at Upton Park. The Argentina striker crossed his arms before kick-off, making the crossed Hammers symbol of the home side, rather than a show of solidarity for a relative in jail as Everton's Tim Cahill once did.
6' WEST HAM ROBBED
Having seen it on the replay, that's an incorrect decision by the linesman. Nolan looked level as he got clear in the area to volley home Mark Noble's free-kick.
4' GOAL DISALLOWED
Kevin Nolan has the ball in the net for West Ham, but the flag is up for offside.
2' LEST WE FORGET
Ahead of West Ham's last home match before Remembrance Sunday, Mike Summerbee, David Gold and Sir Geoff Hurst carried wreaths into the centre circle before kick-off. There was also a minute's silence, which was observed impeccably.
1' HERE WE GO
West Ham get the game under way, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TODAY'S TEAMS

0' TEAM NEWS
Manchester City are going to play with a front three of Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko, with Sergio Aguero being kept in reserve for the Champions League match with Ajax. James Milner was to return in midfield after suspension, but tweaked his hamstring in the warm-up, so his place has gone to Gareth Barry. Kolo Toure will play at right-back. Joleon Lescott misses out on a return after suffering a back spasm. West Ham make one change from last weekend. James Tomkins tweaked his groin in training, so Joey O'Brien comes in at right-back.
0' PREVIEW
Saturday's visit to West Ham United throws up yet another fascinating test to see if champions Manchester City are up for the fight this time around. Just a point off the pace at the top of the table, it seems a little churlish to brand Roberto Mancini's men as a stuttering shadow of their former selves. But that is exactly what they have been over the course of the first quarter of the season and rarely have the Citizens produced anything like the same level of performance that swept away the likes of Manchester United 12 months ago. City struggled to beat Swansea at home last weekend and it took a piece of brilliance from Carlos Tevez to split the sides. Aside from a poor performance against Arsenal, the Hammers have been impressive in front of their own fans this season and will be determined to put things right after a very disappointing showing last time out at Wigan. A visit to Upton Park is always a test of any side's resolve and if they are to take maximum points today, first priority for City is a clean sheet. The visitors have conceded 22 goals in all competitions so far this season, having let in only 29 league goals in the entire title-winning campaign last year. Today's game kicks off at 1730GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
West Ham carry the considerable aerial threat of on-loan Andy Carroll, though it is worth noting the big man has yet to find the net for his surrogate club. The man doing all the damage is good friend and Carroll's playing partner at West Ham's golf day this week, Kevin Nolan. The former Newcastle midfielder is the perfect foil for a big centre-forward with his intelligent darting runs and eye for goal. Nolan is the Hammers' leading scorer with four goals and has added two assists for good measure. City will be hoping that Carlos Tevez's first goal in nine matches against Swansea last time out kick-starts one of those scoring spurts that the Argentina frontman has become well known for. In terms of fewest minutes played per goal scored, however, Ciy's biggest threat is the oft-overlooked Edin Dzeko, who is the club's leading scorer in the Premier League with five despite having only made two starts this season.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
City have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 40 wins to 33 by West Ham and 13 games being drawn. At Upton Park, however, the Hammers have the edge, leading the series by 24 wins to 11 and another eight meetings ending up all square. The last time these sides met was on May 1 with City winning 2-1 with goals from Nigel de Jong and Pablo Zabaleta, Demba Ba replying for the visitors. That completed the double for City, who had won 3-1 at Upton Park on Dec. 11 with strikes from Yaya Toure and Adam Johnson and a Robert Green own goal. Even with that victory, however, City have won only twice in ten trips to West Ham in the Premier League era.
0' FORM GUIDE
West Ham kicked off this latest round of matches in ninth place, level on 14 points with the two teams above them, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion. The Hammers have lost two of their last three, but have yet to suffer successive defeats since returning to the Premier League. With Chelsea's 3-2 reverse to Manchester United last Sunday, City are the only remaining unbeaten side in the division, having won six and drawn the other three of their opening nine games. They have yet to keep a clean sheet away from home this season.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
West Ham will be without Guy Demel (hernia) and Matthew Taylor (calf) for another fortnight, while Ricardo Vaz Te (shoulder) and Jack Collison (knee) will be sidelined for considerably longer. City welcome back Javi Garcia (thigh), Pablo Zabaleta (hamstring) and James Milner (suspension). Midfielders David Silva and Jack Rodwell (both hamstring) and defender Maicon (foot) are out and Micah Richards will be sidelined for around a month after having surgery on a serious knee injury he sustained against Swansea last weekend.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
The man taking charge of today's game is the vastly-experienced Howard Webb MBE, the first referee to preside over both the Champions League and World Cup finals in the same season (2010). This is the sixth Premier League appointment of the season for the South Yorkshire whistleblower. He has produced 21 yellow cards in his previous five outings and dismissed one player, Wigan's Jordi Gomez at Sunderland, an expulsion which saw an end to a run of 26 successive matches for Webb in all competitions without a red card. His assistants today are Darren Cann and Peter Bankes, while fourth official Lee Mason has had a busy past 24 hours, having officiated last night's Championship match between Brighton and Leeds.
