Chelsea vs. Liverpool
Minute Commentary
90' FINAL SCORE: CHELSEA 1 LIVERPOOL 1
For the second time in a week Luis Suarez was the hero for a battling Liverpool side as his second half equaliser denied Chelsea the chance to move up into second place. In a game played at a furious pace from start to finish, Liverpool began the brighter and took the game to Chelsea, but failed to make their possession count. The Blues continually hit their opponents on the break and got their reward after twenty minutes as the returning John Terry rose at the near post to head the ball past Brad Jones for his fiftieth goal in a Chelsea shirt. It all turned sour for Terry minutes later though, as a tangle with Suarez saw the Chelsea captain stretchered off with what is suspected to be a serious knee injury. The pattern of the game continued from then on, with Chelsea always looking the more incisive in the face of considerable Livepool pressure. Oscar and Juan Mata both had the chance to extend the Blues lead before half-time, but after the break the introduction of Suso, and Raheem Sterling's switch to the right wing, brought more joy for the visitors. Yet again though, they had the ever dangerous Suarez to thank for their point as he was in the right place to nod a flick-on from surprise inclusion Jamie Carragher into an unguarded goal following a corner on 74 minutes. He could have won it for them too, with a late run on goal foiled only by the alert Petr Cech. Roberto Di Matteo will no doubt see this as two points dropped given Chelsea's attacking threat. Brendan Rodgers will reason that, unbeaten in six in the league, they may not be winning too many, but at least they are tough to beat.
90' THAT'S IT
You'll Never Walk Alone rings out across Stamford Bridge as Howard Webb calls time on a pulsating game. Jose Enrique's rasping shot stung Petr Cech's palms right at the death but we end all-square.
90' ADDED TIME
Eden Hazard belts a shot past Brad Jones' left-hand post as the fourth official signals four minutes of added time. This will be a fine point for Liverpool if they can hold on.
90' SUAREZ THROUGH
This time Suarez is through one on one with Cech and the keeper does brilliantly to deny the Uruguayan. That was a golden opportunity in the face of a fair old Chelsea onslaught late on.
88' HOPEFUL SUAREZ
Ambitious to say the least, Suarez attempts to beat Petr Cech from the halfway line out on the right wing. Chelsea break and a corner sees Branislav Ivanovic power a header just over.
86' REDS CLOSE
Steven Gerrard wins it from Juan Mata, plays Sterling in with a pinpoint through-ball and the youngster squares to Suso who can't get any power behind his shot. The Reds fans are in full voice now.
84' CHELSEA CHANGE
A nip and tuck encounter probably deserves this scoreline, but Chelsea will no doubt wish they had killed it off early on. They will try to do that without Fernando Torres, who is jeered enthusiastically by his old club's fans as he is replaced by Daniel Sturridge for the last eight minutes of normal time.
80' FORM GUY
Suarez is on the shoulder of the defender as a long ball comes into the area. We all know how it ended up last time that happened but this time he is snuffed out. Head down, he's off again, harrying the Blues back line. Love him or hate him, the man makes things happen.
77' KEEP YOUR RED UP
You have to give credit to this Liverpool side under Brendan Rodgers. They give it their all, believe in their passing style and when you've got a talisman like Luis Suarez on the field then you're always in with a shout. That's six in six games for him now. Victor Moses has replaced Oscar for Chelsea.
73' LUIS LUIS!!!
A lovely flick-on by Jamie Carragher from a Suso corner loops the ball to SUAREZ at the back post and he has the simple job of nodding in from three yards. Yet again the Reds have turned it around and it's anyone's game now.
73' GOOOAAALLL!!!
1-1, guess who!
71' BACK AND FORTH
Raheem Sterling this time feels the force of a Chelsea boot, and the ball is played in dangerously, only for the Reds to see Chelsea break and Ramires try his luck from range but the shot is wild. The shot count must weigh heavily in Chelsea's favour so far.
69' ROUGH AND TUMBLE
The game has sped up to a frenetic pace with both sides committing men forward. Branislav Ivanovic and Steven Gerrard both fly in with stout challenges and Gerrard becomes the third Red to have his name taken. Brad Jones again has to intervene from the free kick to divert the ball away from John Obi Mikel at the back post.
66' TORRES CLOSE
Fernando Torres can't quite direct a ball across the face of goal into the net. This is his fifth attempt to break his duck against his old side.
63' LIVERPOOL IMPROVING
Suso immediately makes an impact and wins a corner for his side which Daniel Agger meets at the back post, and then Glen Johnson gets to the by-line but his cross is cleared. There's just been a few more encouraging signs for Liverpool in the past few minutes.
61' LIVERPOOL RESTRUCTURE
Gerrard recovers and then Suso replaces the disappointing Nuri Sahin as Liverpool give the ball back to Chelsea. Raheem Sterling has switched flanks following that change.
59' CHELSEA THREATEN
Oscar beats three men beautifully down the left and this time it's Glen Johnson who breaks the law to hold him off and the right back joins Allen in Howard Webb's notebook. From the resultant free kick Brad Jones parries with his feet from a Torres header and then a succession of shots are all blocked. Steven Gerrard has gone down injured after that move.
55' WASTEFUL REDS
Glen Johnson breaches the Chelsea back line to feed Suarez who is perhaps unlucky to get penalised for a smart spin off a challenge from Eden Hazard. All Liverpool's good build-up play has been detracted from by a continual inability to keep hold of the ball and another Mata shot down the other end almost makes them pay.
51' ALLEN INTO THE BOOK
Joe Allen loses possession yet again, this time to Fernando Torres. He drags the striker down cynically and receives a yellow card for his troubles.
49' SUAREZ THE KEY
Chelsea have conceded in their last three league games at Stamford Bridge, so there is hope for Liverpool but there's no doubt that they must get Luis Suarez into the fray in more advanced positions. He has dropped deep all too often so far and the Blues have marshalled him well.
46' THE SECOND HALF BEGINS
Chelsea restart the game.
45' HALF TIME
The whistle goes and Chelsea have the lead at half time, but an unfortunate injury to captain John Terry will have dampened their spirits. There was no malice in it from Luis Suarez but Terry left the field in some pain having given his side the lead with a trademark towering header from a corner. That was one of a number of good opportunities for the home side who have ceded possession to Liverpool without any cost to their own goal. Petr Cech has not had a serious save to make and Brendan Rodgers must find a more clear-cut attacking edge if his side are to get back into the game. Join us shortly for the second half...
45' MATA OF TIME
Five minutes of stoppage time begin with another attempt by Oscar to latch onto a good pass down the middle. They have given Liverpool a lesson in how to link midfield and attack in the opening 45 minutes. Juan Mata then finds his way through but thumps his shot over the bar from the edge of the area.
45' MIKEL HOLDING FIRM
John Obi Mikel lacks the vision of his counterparts as he scoops a through-ball straight out of play, but his partnership with Ramires at the base of Chelsea's five in midfield has so far given the Blues a good base to attack from.
43' NO CHANGE
That stoppage has given Liverpool a chance to compose themselves, but more possession leads to nothing as Chelsea continue to look more threatening.
41' CAHILL ON
Gary Cahill is the natural replacement for Terry. A sad sight to see someone injured like that, although things did look a little more encouraging as he received treatment on the field.
38' TERRY INJURED
John Terry has gone down in agony after a clumsy challenge by Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan came through the Chelsea captain, rolled over on his leg and Terry is about to be stretchered off.
36' LIVERPOOL FLOUNDERING
Still the possession statistics favour Liverpool but all their control of the ball has not translated to chances, with perhaps a little directness and the absence of a target man contributing to it.
32' SUNDAY AFTERNOON BLUES
Joe Allen gives it away on the edge of the Chelsea area and the Blues power up field yet again. There's so much pace and trickery with Mata, Hazard and Oscar that the Blues look by far the more likely to find the net again.
28' WEBBED FEAT
Referee Howard Webb got in the way in the lead up to the goal and he's seen to have a laugh about his body check on Ramires with the little Brazilian. Chelsea pour forward and Eden Hazard plays Fernando Torres in and his shot is parried to the Belgian who can't steer it goalwards with his head.
25' POOL PAY THE PRICE
So Liverpool have it all to do as Chelsea start to stretch their legs in midfield. Such an open start to the game was always likely to make both sides vulnerable and despite Liverpool's adventurous approach they have come undone.
21' THE BLUES TAKE THE LEAD
John Terry bags his 50th Chelsea goal, planting a header firmly into the net from a corner after good movement saw him evade the Liverpool defence. That was arguably against the run of play but clinically taken by the captain on his return.
20' GOOOAAALLL!!!
1-0 Chelsea! JOHN TERRY!
20' STERLING EFFORT
Plucky Raheem Sterling takes a long ball from Luis Suarez in the centre forward position but is muscled out of it. The varied movements of both midfields is difficult to keep up with. Branislav Ivanovic then thwacks a free kick over the bar from 40 yards out.
16' RED TIDE
Liverpool have had the lion's share of possession in the opening quarter of an hour, their full backs are pushing up frequently and the battle between Luis Suarez and Ramires is already showing itself to be a pivotal one.
14' A FRENETIC GAME
Liverpool press once more, and Petr Cech gathers a Steven Gerrard corner to release his side on the counter. It's end-to-end stuff at the Bridge.
11' OPEN ENCOUNTER
Oscar benefits from Joe Allen's hesitancy in the middle of the field and surges towards goal. His shot is charged down and then Juan Mata fires one in from the right flank but it's over everyone's head. A very open start to the match.
6' POOL ON TOP
Liverpool have the best of possession in the opening minutes and Petr Cech has to fist a Jose Enrique cross from the right out of the reach of the lurking Glen Johnson.
4' RESTED REDS?
Only three of Liverpool's side featured in Russia on Thursday night so they may perhaps be fresher than the Chelsea side who got a hard-fought win in the Champions League on Wednesday. Daniel Agger breaks into the Blues' penalty area early on.
1' KICK OFF
After an impeccably observed Rememberance Day minute of silence, a capacity crowd roars and we're underway. It's red against blue.
0' THE SIDES
The team sheets are in. Illness on both sides sees David Luiz miss out with tonsilitis for Chelsea whilst Gary Cahill starts on the bench so Branislav Ivanovic will partner John Terry at the heart of the defence upon his return from suspension. Another veteran England centre back Jamie Carragher gets what is a rare start for Liverpool these days, in place of Martin Skrtel, who is unwell. Brad Jones continues in goal as Pepe Reina is not quite fit yet. The sides in full are... Chelsea: Cech, Azpilicueta, Terry, Ivanovic, Bertrand, Mikel, Ramires, Hazard, Oscar, Mata, Torres. Subs: Turnbull, Romeu, Moses, Ferreira, Marin, Sturridge, Cahill. Liverpool: Jones, Wisdom, Carragher, Agger, Johnson, Allen, Gerrard, Sterling, Sahin, Jose Enrique, Suarez. Subs: Gulacsi, Cole, Assaidi, Henderson, Coates, Downing, Fernandez Saez.
0' WELCOME TO STAMFORD BRIDGE
It's a fine west London afternoon as we look forward to another heavyweight Premier League encounter. Yet again the Edin Dzeko late show saw Manchester City overcome Tottenham 2-1 and relegate Chelsea to third position in the table, but a win today and the Blues will leapfrog the champions and pull to within a point of leaders United.
0' TEAM NEWS
Chelsea may well welcome back John Terry after suspension as well as Juan Mata and David Luiz, who missed the game at Swansea but featured in midweek. Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, however, remain side-lined. For Liverpool, Glen Johnson returns against his former club, and Pepe Reina may recover to take his place between the sticks. Fabio Borini and Lucas Leiva are both at least a week away from action.
0' RODGERS' RABBIT
Upon his return to Stamford Bridge, former Chelsea youth team coach, Brendan Rodgers knows what a tough game he is in for: "They are very dynamic and they are all technicians...Oscar is a great technician, Hazard has settled well and Mata's doing very, very well. We know the dangers they possess. It will be a good game.” He went on to paid tribute to in-form, buck-toothed striker Luis Suarez and the way he hares around the field. "We have one of the best strikers in the world in Luis Suarez now. Luis is up there in that one per cent of world-class strikers. There is no team in the world who would not want Luis Suarez in it. When I look at what he gives us consistently, I don't think there's anyone else in the division who's better. I have been very fortunate in my life to have worked with top strikers, but this is a guy whose energy is relentless. Look at how he's asked to press the game, for defenders he is a nightmare. He never gives them a breather, always making them think. He plays on the limit all the time and he wants to score goals, so he is a great reference point for our team."
0' REFLECTIVE ROBERTO
Roberto Di Matteo felt his side deserved their victory over Shakhtar during midweek, and described his decision not to start John Terry, who is now available after suspension, as a case of match fitnesss. He also acknowledged the hex that Liverpool seem to have over them in the league in recent years, but suggested that they will be a different proposition for the Reds this time around: "John Terry's experience is very important, and maybe we lacked a bit of that on Wednesday without him, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, it was quite a young team...They seem to be our bogey team for whatever reason...They've played against us at times when we've not been at our best, but at the moment we are looking very good, very sharp and full of confidence. I think we will throw different kinds of questions at Liverpool on Sunday than we have in the past."
0' HEAD TO HEAD
An astonishing 32 encounters between these two sides in all competitions in the last six seasons reveal a few surprises. In fact, Liverpool have done the league double over Chelsea in three of the last four seasons, including last year, but the Blues came out on top in their last meeting, in the FA Cup, last season. Didier Drogba's second half goal gave his side an unassailable 2-0 lead at Wembley back in May, but Liverpool got their revenge three days later with a 4-1 drubbing at Anfield. Liverpool are suffering their worst start to the season since 1992, with only two wins from ten so far, whilst Chelsea are winless in their last two league games.
0' PREVIEW: CHELSEA VS. LIVERPOOL
Contrasting fortunes this season for two of English football's giants and their fresh-faced managers. While Roberto Di Matteo splashed millions to add even more grace and style to the already purring champions of Europe, Brendan Rodgers was left to raid the cupboards and construct what he could from an unbalanced and young squad. No surprise therefore, that the two sides go into this afternoon's encounter separated by eleven places and twelve points in the Premier League table. A win for Chelsea would haul them to within a point of leaders Manchester United, whilst victory for Liverpool would see the Reds climb into the top half of the table. Both teams drew 1-1 last time out and then had European action in midweek. Chelsea will perhaps be fresher after their buoyant last-gasp victory over Shakhtar on Wednesday at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool's long trip to Russia, and defeat to Anzhi Makhachkala, may well have taken it out of them.
