Manchester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Minute Commentary
90' FT: MAN CITY 2 TOTTENHAM 1
City move back within two points of leaders Manchester United after coming from behind to see off Spurs with second-half strikes from Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko. Argentina forward Aguero was found by Yaya Toure on 65 minutes and effortlessly cut inside his marker Jan Vertonghen before stroking a shot into the corner. Then, as he has done so often before, Dzeko came off the bench and with just two minutes left smashed an unstoppable shot past Brad Friedel to raise the roof inside the Etihad Stadium. Spurs had taken the lead on 21 minutes, with City's defence once more found wanting with their marking at set-pieces. Tom Huddlestone delivered from the right and Steven Caulker was allowed the freedom of Manchester to head home past Joe Hart, who will feel he could have kept out the effort. It was certainly not vintage City, far from it. But they showed just the same heart that United displayed in fighting back against Villa yesterday and it is clear they are not going to surrender their title without a fight.
90' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Javi Garcia replaces Sergio Aguero for City.
89' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a quality goal from the home side. Silva dinked a lovely ball over the top and the super substitute produced the goods again, crashing a left-footed shot into the roof of the net.
88' GOAL: MAN CITY 2 SPURS 1
Edin Dzeko nets against Spurs again and City are in front.
87' SPURS SUBSTITUTION
Kyle Naughton replaces Aaron Lennon, who has been disappointing today.
84' FRIEDEL SAVES AGAIN
City are knocking on the door here. Dzeko back-heels a pass into the path of Aguero, whose powerful shot is repelled by Friedel.
83' SILVA SHOOTS WIDE
Aguero toe-pokes a pass forward for Silva, who caresses a left-foot shot wide of the post from 12 yards.
82' KOLAROV DENIED
Aguero carries the ball forward before finding Kolaarov on the overlap. The shot from an acute angle is deflected into the side-netting.
81' SPURS SUBSTITUTION
Emmanuel Adebayor is replaced by Jermain Defoe.
80' FRIEDEL TO THE RESCUE
Just for a second, it looks as though David Silva has wriggled free, but Friedel is off his line to snuff out the danger and Dzeko heads wide from the resulting corner.
78' SPURS SUBSTITITION
Michael Dawson replaces Kyle Walker for the visitors.
77' SPURS BOOKING
Emmanuel Adebayor is cautioned for a foul on Pablo Zabaleta, who is left with a bloodied and swollen nose as a result. The pair have been involved in a running battle all match.
76' QUIZ ANSWER
Earlier we asked you the names of the two scorers for Everton when they won at the Etihad back in December 2010. The men on target were Tim Cahill and Leighton Baines. Score one point for each correct answer.
75' HART SAVES CITY
Gareth Bale rides his luck after an attempted pass arrives back at his feet and drills a fierce shot that Hart beats away.
73' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Edin Dzeko, who scored four times at White Hart Lane last season, comes on for Carlos Tevez.
72' AGUERO SPURNS CHANCE
Tevez does wonderfully to manufacture space to cross low from the right, but for once Aguero was not alert to the possibilities and the chance goes begging.
71' TOURE IN THE WARS
Toure lands awkwardly after a fierce but fair challenge from Sandro and needs treatment on what appears to be a problem with his hip and back.
69' IT'S GAME ON
That goal looks to have woken both sides up. First Bale shoots well over, then Maicon drives a ball from the right across the face of the Spurs goal.
68' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a bit of a sloppy goal from Tottenham's perspective. Yaya Toure carried the ball from deep and got a lucky ricochet before finding Aguero, who effortlessly cut inside Vertonghen and steered a measured shot into the corner. Class. Pure class.
66' GOAL: MAN CITY 1 TOTTENHAM 1
Sergio Aguero levels for Manchester City.
65' BALE DISAPPOINTING
Gareth Bale shoots tamely wide from a central position around 22 yards from goal. The Welshman has done very little today, but it looks as though he will be picking up a win bonus unless City snap out of this lethargy.
63' IS IT TIME FOR DEFOE?
The goal aside, Spurs have shown very little as an attacking threat. You feel they will bide their time and try to pick the home side off on the counter. Expect to see Jermain Defoe before too long, he would be perfect for that role.
61' TOURE SHOOTS WIDE
Yaya Toure latches on to a pass from Maicon, but his shot from an acute angle fails to trouble Friedel and goes into the side-netting.
57' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Matija Nastasic is replaced by Brazilian defender Maicon. It looks like City are going to five at the back with two wing-backs.
56' COSTLY SLIP FROM AGUERO
Aguero is clean through after a lofted ball from Toure, but he slips at the vital moment on the edge of the box and the chance is gone.
55' OVER FROM KOMPANY
Kolarov aims a corner for the tall figure of Kompany, but under pressure from Vertonghen the City captain heads well over.
53' SILVA LOSES CONTROL
Silva exchanges passes with Aguero on the edge of the Spurs area, but the Spaniard is lacking his normal sharpness after that extended lay-off and he loses control of the ball.
51' IT'S QUIZ TIME
Everton were the last team to win at the Etihad in the Premier League back on December 20, 2010. Who scored the goals for the Toffees in their 2-1 win that day? Answer in a few minutes.
49' VERTONGHEN PAYS A PRICE
City are already playing with more urgency and Zabaleta's cross from the right is blocked by Vertonghen, who appears in real pain having made that challenge.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Spurs get the second half under way. Neither side has made any changes at the break.
45' HT: MAN CITY 0 TOTTENHAM 1
Tottenham lead at the break thanks to a headed goal from Steven Caulker midway through the half. The visitors exploited City's Achilles heel this season, their inability to defend set-pieces, as Tom Huddlestone swung over a free-kick from wide on the right and Caulker rose unchallenged to head powerfully down past Joe Hart. City have been poor again today and have created very little with the amount of possession they have enjoyed. The best opening fell to Tevez just before the break, but with only Brad Friedel to beat he shot straight at the goalkeeper.
45' ZABALETA DENIED
Silva slides a ball forward for Zabaleta, who does well to gather it before manufacturing a low left-foot shot that Friedel smothers well.
44' GLORIOUS CHANCE FOR TEVEZ
City should be level. Dempsey is robbed in midfield, a first-time pass by Yaya Youre puts Silva clear down the right and he squares for Tevez, whose tame shot with only Friedel to beat frustrates the home fans.
41' OVER FROM AGUERO
Defensive mistakes first by Gallas and then by Caulker give Aguero a shooting opportunity from wide on the right, but the effort is way over the crossbar and sums up City's first half.
40' IN NEED OF TREATMENT
Matija Nastasic lands awkwardly after an aerial clash with Clint Dempsey and needs treatment before he can continue.
37' WIDE FROM KOLAROV
City finally show some fluency going forward. Aguero feeds the ball inside to Kolarov, who goes for precision rather than power and sees his shot swerve wide of goal.
34' MORE PENALTY CLAIMS
Zabaleta goes to ground in the Tottenham box after colliding with Tom Huddlestone, but again the referee waves aside the appeals for a penalty.
31' MAN CITY BOOKING
Adebayor throws himself over a tackle from Zabaleta and earns the City man a caution. In my book that was a blatant dive and it should have been the Spurs striker shown the yellow card.
28' TOTTENHAM BOOKING
Kyle Walker gets man and not ball with a lunging tackle on Gael Clichy and is shown the yellow card.
26' HUDDLESTONE GOES CLOSE
Adebayor launches a City raid, carrying the ball to the edge of the area before back-heeling the ball for Huddlestone, whose powerful low drive from 20 yards goes just past the post.Manchester City 26
25' PENALTY CLAIMS
City protest loud and long for a penalty for handball against William Gallas after a cheeky turn by Sergio Aguero. The home side look hard done by there, it seemed as though the referee was unsighted.
23' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's another City have conceded from a set-piece. Huddlestone delivered from the right, Kolarov left his man and the centre-back's downward header had too much pace on it for Hart to keep out. That's partly down to the goalkeeper, but more so the appalling marking from the home side.
22' GOAL: MAN CITY 0 TOTTENHAM 1
Steven Caulker puts Tottenham in front.
20' ESCAPE FOR CITY
That's ludicrous defending from City. Vertonghen launches a long throw in from the left, Nastasic ducks out of the header and had Aaron Lennon been alert to the opening he would have had a tap-in from there yards.
18' BETTER DEFENDING FROM CITY
Spurs win two corners in quick succession. Unlike in the Champions League debacle on Tuesday, City's defence this time is rock-solid.
16' QUIET TIME FOR MANCINI
Roberto Mancini is keeping his own counsel on the City bench at the moment, with a glum look on his face and his hands buried in his pockets. He's certainly less animated that he was during the Ajax match earlier in the week.
13' TAME SHOT BY KOLAROV
City win a free-kick 30 yards out. Kolarov goes for goal, but Friedel is equal to what was a pretty tame effort.
11' AGUERO NOT FAR AWAY
A ball from the left by Kolarov is very close to picking out Sergio Aguero, who had sneaked between Spurs' two central defenders. City just have the edge at the moment.
9' TODAY'S MILESTONES
Carlos Tevez is making his 100th Manchester City appearance today and Tottenham captain William Gallas his 300th Premier League start.
7' HAPPY RETURNS
In the tunnel before the game Emmanuel Adebayor walked up the entire line of Manchester City players and gave them all either a hug or a warm handshake. It's a big game for the Togolese, but can he hurt his former club?
5' MEN IN BLACK - AND GREY
Spurs are in their very unusual away kit this afternoon, which features shirts of black and grey halves and black shorts. Think Blackburn Rovers, but with more of a Goth look.
3' TALE OF THE TAPE
Adebayor is sent off by the referee in the opening minute - but only to change the white tape that is wound round his socks and shin pads. It has to be the same colour as your kit these days, apparently. Not sure if that's an EU or a Premier League requirement.
2' REMEMBERING THE FALLEN
Remembrance Sunday was marked before the start of the match with a minute's silence which was quite impeccably observed once some fans worked out that quiet, rather than applause, was the order of the day.
1' HERE WE GO
City kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TODAY'S TEAMS
Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy, Toure, Barry, Silva, Tevez, Kolarov, Aguero. Subs: Pantilimon, Maicon, Dzeko, Sinclair, Javi Garcia, Toure, Razak. Tottenham: Friedel, Walker, Gallas, Caulker, Vertonghen, Sandro, Huddlestone, Lennon, Bale, Dempsey, Adebayor. Subs: Lloris, Naughton, Defoe, Dawson, Sigurdsson, Livermore, Carroll. Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland).
0' TEAM NEWS
Manchester City fans will be buoyed by the news that David Silva returns to their starting line-up after a hamstring injury. He takes the place of Samir Nasri. Aleksandar Kolarov will likely fill the left midfield role with Gael Clichy at left-back. Up front, it's Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, with Mario Balotelli not even on the bench. Spurs make just one change from the side that lost to Wigan. Disappointingly, it's a straight swap, with Emmanuel Adebayor coming in for Jermain Defoe, meaning Andre Villas-Boas is sticking with one man up front.
0' PREVIEW
Manchester City welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Etihad Stadium looking to rediscover the winning formula in one of three Sunday games in round 11 of the Premier League. City surrended top spot to Manchester United last weekend after their failure to win at West Ham. And their hopes of qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League were all but extinguished after they could only manage a 2-2 draw at home with Ajax in midweek, a match most memorable for manager Roberto Mancini's on-field rant at referee Peter Rasmussen after the Dane's failure to award a last-minute penalty in favour of Mario Balotelli. Spurs, too, have been having their problems, with newspaper stories of dressing room unrest surfacing on more than one occasion. Andre Villas-Boas was booed last weekend for his decision to stick with just one striker with his side losing at home to Wigan and removing Jermain Defoe for Emmanuel Adebayor. Perhaps the message got through, because Spurs played two up front in their Europa League victory over Maribor in midweek and Defoe grabbed a hat-trick. It will be very interesting to see what sort of formation AVB deploys today, especially with City having looked far from solid defensively for most of this season. Today's game kicks off at 1330GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Even though he often has to do his work from the bench and has played half as many minutes this season as Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko has still managed to become City's leading scorer, with five Premier League goals to his credit. Tevez has four goals, three of those coming at home and he also is the club's leading creator with three assists to his name. Tottenham's leading scorer Jermain Defoe has five Premier League goals. Gareth Bale has netted all three of his goals away from home and although he has not quite hit the heights of that never-to-be-forgotten Champions League night against Inter Milan in the San Siro, he has really looked in the mood in recent weeks.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
City just have the edge in league meetings between the sides with 48 wins to 47 by Tottenham and 41 games being drawn. At the Etihad Stadium and Maine Road, City have 33 wins to 16 by Spurs, with a further 14 meetings ending up all square. The last time these sides met was on Jan.22, with City winning 3-2 thanks to a last-minute penalty from Mario Balotelli. City had opened a two-goal cushion thanks to two goals in three minutes from Samir Nasri (56) and Joleon Lescott (59) only for Tottenham to hit back with two of their own in five minutes from Jermain Defoe (60) and Gareth Bale (65). The earlier meeting between the sides on the opening day of last season had been distinctly more one-sided, City winning 5-1 helped by four goals from Edin Dzeko.
0' FORM GUIDE
City are still unbeaten this season, with six wins and four draws from their opening ten matches. However, the goalless draw at Upton Park last weekend was the first time home or away that they had failed to score in the league and dropped Roberto Mancini's men to third in the table. Only once this season have Manchester City failed to pick up maximum points at home in the Premier League, that was when Arsenal came to the Etihad on Sep.23 and managed a creditable 1-1 draw. Following their opening day defeat at Newcastle, Tottenham had gone six games unbeaten. But they have lost two of their last three, both at White Hart Lane, to Chelsea and Wigan.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
City have Joleon Lescott (back), Maicon (foot) and David Silva (hamstring) all available for selection. Micah Richards (knee) and midfielders James Milner and Jack Rodwell (both hamstring) remain out injured. Tottenham midfielder Sandro is rated at 50-50 having been taken off in the first half against Wigan because of a calf injury. Emmanuel Adebayor could make his first league start of the season at his former club and Brad Friedel is likely just to get the nod in goal ahead of Hugo Lloris. Mousa Dembele (hip), Scott Parker (Achilles), Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Younes Kaboul (both knee) are all ruled out.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Today's referee is Michael Oliver, who made headlines in August 2010 when he took charge of the match between Birmingham City against Blackburn Rovers aged 25 years and 182 days, breaking Stuart Attwell's record as the youngest-ever Premier League referee. It took Oliver a while to find his feet, and he had two early red cards overturned on appeal, but since has proved himself to be an accomplished official. The Northumberland whistleblower has shown a total of 10 yellow cards in his five Premier League games to date this season and has dismissed one player, Aston Villa's Ciaran Clark, in the home defeat by Everton. Oliver's assistants today are Simon Long and Darren England, while Lee Mason is the fourth official.
