Newcastle United vs. West Ham United
Minute Commentary
90' HAPPY HAMMERS
West Ham have made the trip up to the North East, and come away with three points, a clean sheet and a few injuries. Both teams were slow to get going, and until Kevin Nolan's 37th minute goal, offered little to get the crowd going. The goal, however, seemed to inspire the Toon Army and the half ended with West Ham defending resolutely against a Newcastle onslaught. The second half was a similarly quiet affair, with West Ham reluctant to commit too many forward, and Newcastle unable to find the quality needed in the final third to support their strikers. A couple of decent saves from headers for Jaaskelainen, and an excellent stop from Krul at the feet of Carroll were about the highlights, as West Ham held on for an excellent away win.
90' THAT'S IT
Full time. Newcastle United 0 - 1 West Ham United.
90' KEEPERSTRIKER
It's the final minute of the game, Tim Krul comes up for a corner, and almost gets his head on it. Cabaye gets a chance for a shot, but his drive is wayward.
90' NOTHING LEFT
West Ham are heading to the corners, just to run the clock down. Newcastle get the ball forward to Demba Ba, but the striker is entirely alone, and is well outnumbered.
90' ADDED TIME
After more injuries than highlights in this game, the fourth official signals five minutes of added time.
90' EFFORT
Shola Ameobi gets a shot on target from outside the box, but that is never going to beat Jaaskelainen.
87' INJURY...AGAIN
Now Andy Carroll is down after a clash of heads with Shola Ameobi. West Ham complain, but there was no malice in the challenge. Carroll OK to continue.
86' ROOKIE ERROR
A foul-throw from Guy Demel. Should professionals be making silly mistakes like that?
84' NO QUALITY
Ben Arfa makes a break down the left and has time to pick out a cross, but over-hits it to give West Ham a let-off. Story of the game really.
81' QUIET
The game has petered out again. You can't deny both teams are working very hard, but the end product is missing. West Ham seem reluctant to commit men forward, much to the dismay of Sam Allardyce.
80' SUBSTITUTION FOR NEWCASTLE
Gabriel Obertan comes on for Danny Simpson. An attacking sub from Alan Pardew.
77' CAUTION
Yellow card for Ben Arfa for a high challenge.
76' POOR
Ba again finds space to cross, but again there is only one player in the box. Hammers able to defend.
72' SUPPORT
The game seems to have lost a bit of its urgency. Demba Ba does well to get himself to the byline, and crosses, but noone has gambled and the cross goes nowhere. Newcastle need some players in the box.
71' CARROLL CHANCE
Andy Carroll is played through by Nolan, and is one- on-one with the keeper, but Krul is out quickly to make a good save. Perhaps should have done better there.
69' IF ONLY
Shola Ameobi attacks a Yohan Cabaye corner, finds himself with a free header, but nods it wide. If he had kept that on target it would have been trouble for the Hammers.
67' SUBSTITUTION FOR WEST HAM
More injury woes for West Ham. George McCartney hits the deck, clutching his groin, and after some treatment is replaced by Guy Demel.
64' FEELS LIKE IT'S COMING
Newcastle are knocking on the door. Demba Ba ends up in the goal, but he can't take the ball with him. Jaaskelainen then makes a good save down to his left, and another from the resulting corner.
62' SOMEHOW
Cabaye's cross lands on the head of Mike Williamson, who heads it goalwards, but somehow, and I don't really know how, West Ham keep it out.
61' END TO END
The game is starting to get stretched, both sides looking for goals. Joey O'Brien picks up a booked for a late challenge on Davide Santon.
55' MORE INJURY TROUBLE
Winston Reid is now suffering a little. He catches his foot in the turf and lands awkwardly, jarring his knee. He looks like he wants to continue.
53' GO DIAME
Mohamed Diame picks the ball up on the half way line, and just runs at the Newcastle defence. With a few lucky bounces, he almost makes it all the way to Krul's goal, but Anita sticks to his task and is able to make a block.
52' SUBSTITUTION FOR WEST HAM
Gary O'Neil is on for Yossi Benayoun.
51' NEWCASTLE INJURY NEWS
News is that Newcastle's Jonas Gutierrez is on his way to hospital to check for any cracks or breaks. Let's hope it's nothing too serious!
47' BIG SHOUT
Demba Ba thinks he has scored. The Newcastle striker beats Andy Carroll in the air, and powers a shot towards goal, but Jussi Jaaskelainen somehow claws it off the line, when it seemed a certain goal. The Newcastle players are claiming the ball was over the line, but the replays are inconclusive.
46' TACTICAL SWITCH
Cisse didn't really have the best half, and the substitution seems to have been tactical rather that for an injury.
46' KICK OFF
Newcastle get the second half underway.
45' CHANGE FOR NEWCASTLE
Shola Ameobi on in place of Papiss Cisse to start the second half.
45' SLOW BURNER
A relatively slow starting game here at St James' Park, arrives at half time with West Ham in the lead. Newcastle could perhaps count themselves unlucky to be behind as neither side could really claim to have done enough to deserve the lead, and the opening 35 minutes were relatively dull. It wasn't until Nolan poked home from close range that the game came to life, and in the last few minutes of stoppage time, Newcastle found a bit of urgency and started to put the West Ham goal under pressure. If Newcastle begin the second half as the first ended, West Ham have some defending to do!
45' HALF TIME
Mike Dean ends the half. Newcastle United 0 - 1 West Ham United.
45' CLOSER
The goal has certainly brought Newcastle to life, a shot from Cabaye is blocked, and a penalty shout for what looks like a shove in the back is denied. West Ham survive.
45' NOT QUITE
A Ben Arfa rasper from outside the box, bounces off two West Ham players and seems to be heading in. St. James' park goes wild. Side netting.
45' ADDED TIME
Four minutes.
43' RESPONSE
And Newcastle respond to the goal. A couple of minutes of sustained pressure wins them a corner, which Williamson is up early to head towards goal, but Jaaskelainen is equal to it.
41' SO CLOSE
And seconds later, Nolan almost does it again. A superb ball from Diame leaves the Newcastle defence standing, but Nolan can't find the finish this time. Let off!
41' SCRIPTED
West Ham take the lead, and it just had to be Kevin Nolan. Joey O'Brien's scuffed shot finds Nolan unmarked at the back post and he duly tucks it home. Newcastle claim offside, but the replay shows otherwise.
39' GOOOOALLL
Kevin Nolan tucks it home from close range against his former club. Newcastle United 0 - 1 West Ham United.
38' QUOTE
I have just heard: "I wonder if there is any chance of either set of players actually passing it to a team mate". Just about sums it up really!
36' OPTIMISTIC
Mike Williamson wants a penalty after a bit of handbags with George McCartney. They were both at it, no chance!
34' SUBSTITUTION FOR WEST HAM
It looks like Jarvis has picked up an injury, and is replaced by Modibo Maiga. I'm not really sure where he picked up that knock - he has barrely been involved.
32' LONELY
West Ham need to work on getting some support to their front men. A few times now both Carroll and Nolan have won good headers, but there has been no West Ham player within twenty yards.
29' BETTER
A bit of something there to lift the crowd - Newcastle break forward, but crosses firstly from Ba on the right, and then Ferguson on the left, are well dealt with by headers from Reid and Tomkins.
27' FIZZLE
As the half has progressed neither team has really made much progression. The could do with an attacking spark from either side.
25' COMFORTABLE
Yohan Cabaye draws the first save from either keeper. A long-range effort lands in the gratefull arms of Jussi Jaaskelainen. Not his best effort.
24' SUBSTITUTION FOR NEWCASTLE
It looks like Jonas Gutierrez has not recovered from that early challenge with Yossi Benayoun. He limps off to be replaced by Vurnon Anita. Demba Ba takes over as skipper.
21' OOPS
Ba clatters Noble to the ground, half way into the Newcastle half, and the resulting free-kick bobbles around for a bit before landing at the feet of Benayoun, who manages to slice his effort, almost for a throw-in.
19' WHAT IS HE THINKING
Cisse gets involved for the first time in the game. A simple ball over the top allows him to stretch his legs, beating Reid to the ball, but he shoots far too early and his effort dribbles harmlessly wide. Why did he not carry on into the box?
16' ANDY CARROLL
There was a lot of talk about Andy Carroll before the game; Alan Pardew saying he wants to bring him back to Newcastle. Is that mind games or a real desire? Would Carroll get in ahead of Ba and Cisse?
12' NO DIFFERENCE
Quite an even start to the game, fairly equal possession, but no real chances to report. Both sides look comfortable on the ball, but haven't yet found their rhythm.
10' OUCH
A tough, honest challenge from Jonas Gutierrez and Yossi Benayoun leaves them both rolling around on the floor. That looks like a clash of knees, which hurts. Both should be OK to continue.
9' ALMOST
A half-chance for Newcastle at one end is broken up by Reid, and before you know it, Benayoun and Diame have combined to force some space at the other end. Shot is poor in the end, but good football.
7' WHY?
Cisse jumps up for a header, but misjudges it and sticks up his arm to flick it away from the West Ham player. Perhaps lucky not to get a booking for that.
5' THAT'S WHY HE'S A KEEPER...
Jussi Jaaskelainen tries to be clever and dribble around Cisse, which goes a little wrong. The assistant referee gives a free kick in his favour. Lucky boy.
3' TEAM NEWS
So a game full of intrigue gets underway, with some positive team news for both sides. For Newcastle, Simpson has recovered from a knock to start, and youngster Shane Ferguson gets a chance to show what he can do. For West Ham Collins is not fit enough to start, but Tomkins is!
2' BIG RETURN
Carroll's first touch of the game is a fairly awful striker's challenge. Free kick Newcastle.
1' KICK OFF
West Ham take the kick, as Mike Dean gets the game underway.
0' WELL DONE
Impeccably observed, and a hearty roar greets the ref's whistle.
0' REMEMBERANCE SUNDAY
A wreath is placed on the centre spot, as a minute silence is signalled by the referee.
0' WEST HAM LINEUP
West Ham start with: Jaaskelainen, O'Brien, Reid, Tomkins, McCartney, Benayoun, Diame, Noble, Jarvis, Nolan, Carroll.
0' NEWCASTLE STARTING LINEUP
The teams are in. Newcastle start with: Krul, Simpson, Taylor, Williamson, Santon, Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Gutierrez, Ferguson, Cisse, Ba.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Mike Dean is the man with the whistle, in his 11th game of the season. He has handed out 36 yellows and two red cards so far, including sending off Jack Wilshire for Arsenal against Man Utd last weekend. This will be the first time Mr Dean has been in charge of a Newcastle game this season, however he did officiate in West Hams opening game of the season – a 1-0 win against Villa.
0' KEY MEN
For Newcastle, their strike for can cause problems for any team, and we all know about the threat they pose, however the game is likely to be won and lost in midfield. Yohan Cabaye has become something of a talisman for the Magpies since his move from France, and his ability to dominate a game, as well as an eye for goal singles him out as real threat to an opposition. For West Ham, it has to be Andy Carroll, following a disappointing spell at Liverpool, he looks to have settled in at West Ham, and although he has yet to hit the goal-scoring highs, his strength, power and hold up play have made him a fans favourite at the Boleyn.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
West Ham have failed to win any of their last nine visits to Newcastle. Their last victory at St James' Park was in October 1998. However, Sam Allardyce has won his last four matches as a Premier League coach against Newcastle. Interestingly Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan have played in this fixture twice (both for Newcastle), netting on both occasions.
0' HAMMERS HAPPENINGS
West Ham are yet to win outside London so far this season. Their only away triumph to date came across the capital at QPR; however a battling goalless draw last time out against Manchester City will give them some belief.
0' NEWCASTLE NEWS
Newcastle have lost only one of their last eight league games, a 3-0 home defeat by Manchester United, however they are eight points down on this stage last season, when they sat third in the league table.
0' ALLARDYCE AILMENTS
Sam Allardyce has arranged late fitness for James' Collins and Tomkins, potentially leaving Winston Reid as the only fit centre-back. In better news, Guy Demel has returned to full training following a hernia problem, but Jack Collison, Matthew Taylor and Ricardo Vaz Te will be missing. Mohamed Diame is hoping to continue his impressive start to his West Ham career, by using his knowledge of friends Ba and Cisse against them.
0' PARDEW PROBLEMS
After a fairly costly trip to Anfield last time out Newcastle are missing the suspended Fabrizio Coloccini, and the injured James Perch. Demba Ba should make a return, but Cheick Tiote is serving the last final game of his ban and Danny Simpson is doubtfull. Gutierrez and Ben Arfa were rested for the midweek trip to Bruges, so should be fresh, and expect Williamson and Taylor to start together in the centre of the defence.
0' PREVIEW
Aside from all the added intrigue, there is also a football game to be played. The two sides sit next to each other in mid-table - Newcastle not quite yet hitting the heights of last season, but West Ham perhaps performing above expectations as the highest-placed of the promoted sides. Both teams have plenty of players keeping the medical staff busy and are potentially facing defensive shortages - we could be in for a Sunday goal glut.
0' BACK TO THE FUTURE
A day of returns at St. James' Park today. Both managers are lining up against a former employee: Pardew, sacked by the Hammers six years ago and Allardyce agreeing to a “mutual termination” following a torrid spell in the North East a little under five years ago. The much discussed and debated Andy Carroll returns to his native North East, this time in claret and blue, as does former Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan. Demba Ba lines up against the side that first bought him to England.
