Arsenal vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Minute Commentary
90' FT: ARSENAL 5 TOTTENHAM 2
Arsenal come from a goal down to sweep aside ten-man Tottenham in a thrilling North London derby, replicating the scoreline of this match last season. It all started so well for the visitors, with former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor netting from close range after Jermain Defoe's initial effort was parried. Adebayor turned from hero to villain seven minutes later when a shocking challenge on Santi Cazorla saw him dismissed by referee Howard Webb. Sometimes teams at a numerical disadvantage manage to achieve some amazing things, but there was no such fortitude shown by Spurs. The home side were level within seven minutes, Per Mertesacker scoring with a towering header. The visitors then looked all at sea and needed to get into the break level to regroup and stand a chance of getting something out of the match. Arsenal, though, went for the jugular and went in two goals to the good at the interval thanks to a fortuitous strike from Lukas Podolski and an excellent finish from Olivier Giroud. Andre Villas-Boas made some bold changes at the break and his side dominated at the start of the second half, only to see Cazorla net a fourth for Arsenal after a fine team move. Bale pulled one back for Spurs with a fine individual effort, but there was no way back and the excellent Theo Walcott underlined Arsenal's dominance with a fifth two minutes from time.
90' ALMOST A SIXTH
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain beats two players down the right and his shot is cleared at the near post by Michael Dawson.
90' GOAL: ARSENAL 5 SPURS 2
Arsenal have a two-on-one break, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain unselfishly sets up Theo Walcott and he steers the ball home.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of four minutes of added time.
88' QUIZ ANSWER
Earlier we asked you the name of the other player in addition to Emmanuel Adebayor to have scored for both clubs in this fixture. The answer: Jimmy Robertson. Give yourself two points if you managed to get that one right.
86' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replaces Olivier Giroud for Arsenal.
85' WIDE BY VERMAELEN
Thomas Vermaelen for some reason finds himself high up the pitch, but mis-kicks with the Spurs goal at his mercy.
82' IT'S QUIZ TIME AGAIN
Emmanuel Adebayor is one of only two players to score for both teams in this fixture, but can you name the other? Answer in a few minutes.
80' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Lukas Podolski gets a good hand as he is replaced by Andre Santos.
78' COSTLY DEFOE MIS-KICK
Szczesny comes to claim a corner from the left, but gets nowhere near the ball and Defoe fluffs a volleyed chance at the far post.
75' GLORIOUS CHANCE SPURNED
Spurs have a glorious chance to pull another one back. Bale is in down the left and instead of picking out the unmarked Defoe in the centre, simply fires aimlessly across the face of goal. Defoe is furious and kicks the post.
74' SUBSTITUTIONS
Each side makes a change. Aaron Ramsey comes on for Jack Wilshere for Arsenal while Spurs take off Tom Huddlestone and replace him with Tom Carroll.
72' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a great goal from the Welshman. Sandro won the initial header and Bale carried the ball to the edge of the area before unleashing a right-foot drive into the corner which went through the legs of Koscielny and left Szczesny unsighted.
71' GOAL: ARSENAL 4 SPURS 2
Gareth Bale nets a second for Tottenham.
70' SMOTHERING SAVE
Cazorla and Podolski combine to free Giroud, but Lloris comes out quickly to save at his compatriot's feet.
68' WALCOTT DENIED
Just for a second Walcott looks to have sprung the offside trap, but he is driven wide and Lloris smothers the shot.
67' SPURS BOOKING
Sandro is shown the yellow card for a foul on Olivier Giroud. He's done well to stay out of the book for so long, in fairness to the Brazilian.
65' CROWD IN GOOD SPIRITS
“Adebayor, what's the score?” is being chanted vociferously by two thirds of the people inside the Emirates at the moment.
62' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a wonderful goal from the home side. Giroud won the flick-on, Walcott fed Podolski down the left and he looked up before delivering a perfect pass to the far-post where Cazorla netted with ease. Walcott then has a shot blocked and Giroud shoots over as Spurs look like they might crumble.
60' GOAL: ARSENAL 4 SPURS 1
Santi Cazorla puts Arsenal in dreamland with a fourth.
58' WHO NEEDS ADEBAYOR
The way Spurs are going for this you would not believe they were playing at a one-man disadvantage. It's been a very impressive switch of gameplan by Villas-Boas.
56' THEO BACK ON AGAIN
Walcott looks like he will soldier on for now, but one wonders for how long. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been warming up on the sidelines.
54' WALCOTT NEEDS TREATMENT
Dawson makes a crunching tackle to take the ball off a flying Walcott, who lands awkwardly on his shoulder and looks in great pain.
51' QUIZ ANSWER
In all that commotion at the end of the first half, we forgot to give you the answer to our earlier trivia question. Remember, we asked you for the names of the two players in addition to William Gallas and Emmanuel Adebayor who had appeared for both clubs in North London derbies in the Premier League era. The missing pair were David Bentley and Sol Campbell. No points for that, it was far too easy.
49' HOW THEY LINE UP
Bale and Lennon are playing as wing-backs for Spurs, who now have three centre-backs and two up front in Dempsey and Defoe. It's a bold, bold move by AVB.
47' SPURS GOING FOR IT
Tottenham begin the second half with purpose. Defoe has a shot charged down and Mertesacker has to make an important clearance to deny Bale.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Tottenham get the second half under way. The visitors have brought on Clint Dempsey and Michael Dawson for Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker at the interval.
45' HT: ARSENAL 3 TOTTENHAM 1
What a fantastic half of football, it's had just about everything. Spurs started magnificently and snatched the lead after ten minutes through former Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor, who was left with a tap-in after Wojniech Szczesny was only able to parry an initial effort from Jermain Defoe. Aaron Lennon was very close to adding a second before Adebayor was shown a deserved red card for a reckless tackle on Santi Cazorla. Arsenal immediately got on top and levelled on 24 minutes through a wonderful header by Germany centre-back Per Mertesacker. A magnificent save from Hugo Lloris denied France team-mate Olivier Giroud a second for Arsenal, but the home side did grab the lead two minutes from the break courtesy of a deflected shot from Lukas Podolski and added a third in stoppage time from Giroud.
45' MORE ON THAT GOAL
The third came from a quick free-kick. Spurs only half-cleared the initial delivery, but Cazorla picked up the loose ball and waltzed his way through down the left before producing a pass for Giroud, who swept the ball home despite Vertonghen dragging him to the ground.
45' GOAL: ARSENAL 3 SPURS 1
Olivier Giroud nets a third for Arsenal.
43' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It was a bit of a fluke second from the home side. Podolski decided to ignore the overlapping run of Arteta and went for goal. The shot was half-blocked by Gallas, but dribbled over the line with Lloris wrong-footed.
42' GOAL: ARSENAL 2 TOTTENHAM 1
Lukas Podolski gives Arsenal the lead.
41' GIROUD HEADER SAVED
Giroud looks odds-on to score from eight yards after Sagna's measured cross picks him out in the centre. The Frenchman's header, though, is straight at Lloris. A yard either side and that was a certain goal.
39' FINAL WARNING FOR SANDRO
Sandro has been flying into tackles all over the pitch this afternoon. Another mistimed tackle, this one on Jack Wilshere, brings a final warning from Mr Webb.
36' IT'S QUIZ TIME
An easy one to start with: William Gallas and Emmanuel Adebayor are two of four players to have appeared for both clubs in North London derbies in the Premier League era, but can you name the other two? Answer in a few minutes.
34' GALLAS NOT FAR AWAY
Huddlestone's free-kick from the left causes some discomfort to Arsenal's defence, but William Gallas and Jan Vertonghen get in each other's way and the chance is gone.
31' SO CLOSE TO A SECOND
Hugo Lloris makes a brilliant save to his left at full stretch to turn away a header from Olivier Giroud from a Jack Wilshere free-kick. A long-range swerving strike from Cazorla then goes just over the bar.
27' DEFENSIVE FRAILTY
Spurs have kept only one clean sheet in 12 league games this season, against Aston Villa in October. There are extenuating circumstances today, of course, being down to ten men.
25' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Walcott did expertly to beat Naughton down the right and stood up a delightful cross for the German, who produced a towering header into the corner for his first Gunners goal.
24' GOAL: ARSENAL 1 TOTTENHAM 1
Per Mertesacker levels for Arsenal.
22' BLOCK BY HUDDLESTONE
Walcott shows his pace down the Arsenal right and wins the home side a corner, but then wastes his good work by delivering a dreadful set-piece. Arsenal press again, but Huddlestone blocks a left-foot shot from Vermaelen inside the area.
20' SPURS UP AGAINST IT
That red card was just what Spurs didn't need after their impressive start. Adebayor can have no complaints. It was a reckless challenge, catching the Spaniard on the ankle. Andre Villas-Boas is complaining to the fourth official, without justification in my opinion.
17' SPURS RED CARD - ADEBAYOR'S OFF
Emmanuel Adebayor is shown the red card for a high tackle on Santi Cazorla. Gareth Bale and Jack Wilshere square up in the aftermath.
15' WASTED BY WALCOTT
Wilshere creates come space in midfield with a lovely turn. He plays a fine pass inside the full-back, but there is no-one there to collect Walcott's pull-back.
14' SO CLOSE TO A SECOND
Spurs are rampant here. Bale teases Arsenal's defence before sliding a pass through for Lennon, whose low shot goes inches wide of the far post. That could so easily have been a second.
13' DANGEROUS GAME
Spurs' backline are pushing up at every opportunity, squeezing the space in which Arsenal can operate. It's a bit risky with the speedy Theo Walcott looking to get in behind them, but he needs to time his run better than he just did when he was caught offside.
12' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Jermain Defoe left Per Mertesacker for dead with an excellent turn to collect a pass by Vertonghen from deep. Szczesny parried Defoe's angled shot but Adebayor was left with a tap-in.
11' GOAL: ARSENAL 0 SPURS 1
Emmanuel Adebayor gives Spurs the lead.
8' PLAYING A DANGEROUS GAME
Spurs' backline are pushing up at every opportunity, squeezing the space in which Arsenal can operate. It's a bit risky with the speedy Theo Walcott looking to get in behind them, but he needs to time his runs better than he just did when he was caught offside.
6' ON THE SLIDE?
This is Arsenal's worst start to a season since 1982-83, when they had only 14 points after 11 games. He repeated the trick for good measure.
4' TACKLES FLYING IN
It's been a totally committed start from both sides, with Sandro and Lukas Podolski both making crunching but fair tackles to make an early mark.
2' HOW SPURS LINE UP
Steven Caulker picked up a knee injury with England in midweek, so Jan Vertonghen has moved across to play in the centre and Kyle Naughton has been drafted in to play left-back.
1' HERE WE GO
Arsenal kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TODAY'S TEAMS
Arsenal: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Wilshere, Arteta, Cazorla, Walcott, Giroud, Podolski. Substitutues: Mannone, Santos, Jenkinson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey, Coquelin, Arshavin. Tottenham: Lloris, Walker, Gallas, Vertonghen, Naughton, Lennon, Sandro, Huddlestone, Bale, Adebayor, Defoe. Substitutes: Friedel, Dawson, Dempsey, Sigurdsson, Livermore, Townsend, Carroll.
0' TEAM NEWS
The big news for Arsenal is that Wojciech Szczesny returns in goal for the first time since September after injury. Most of the injury doubts such as Theo Walcott and Mikel Arteta have passed fitness tests and start, while Jack Wilshere returns after suspension, replacing Francis Coquelin. There are two main lines to come out of the Tottenham starting line-up: Hugo Lloris is preferred in goal to Brad Friedel and, for the first time since March, Emmanual Adebayor and Jermain Defoe start a match together in attack.
0' PREVIEW
Both Arsenal and Tottenham have endured inconsistent starts to the season, but all that would be forgotten in a flash with victory in the North London derby as these two great rivals square up in the Premier League's early kick-off on Saturday. These matches at the Emirates have produced some of the games of the season in recent years. Each side has won one of the last two meetings having erased a two-goal deficit and while the match three seasons ago was one-sided in Arsenal's favour, the year before that Spurs scored twice in the final minute to snatch a 4-4 draw and turn Arsene Wenger's face a very unhealthy shade of grey. With 23 goals in the last four meetings there is every reason to expect another very special encounter. Arsenal were unable to see off a dogged Fulham side at home last weekend, which came after a pitiful display at Old Trafford, and they are in need of a positive result. Spurs, you feel, would be happier with a point. For a while at champions Manchester City on Sunday Tottenham looked to be heading for their fourth successive Premier League win away from home, but were unable to hold on at the Etihad and after winning four in a row, Spurs have now lost three of their last four in the league. They need to stop the rot. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Unlike last year, when Robin van Persie was seemingly Arsenal's only threat in front of goal, the Gunners have been sharing the goals around this season, with four players level as leading scorer with a paltry three apiece. One of those is Santi Cazorla, who can turn a match when he is in the mood and although Wenger admitted recently that Lukas Podolski has been struggling, the German has also netted three times, not bad for a player who has managed just six shots on target this season. Emmanuel Adebayor has been a fringe player for much of the season for Spurs, but he got his chance against Manchester City last weekend and could do so again against another of his former clubs, especially with Jermain Defoe struggling with a hamstring injury. Villas-Boas suggested he would use Adebayor's bitterness against his former employers to his advantage. “I suggest to make the most of (the situation) we can use individual's motivations and that is why we used Adebayor also in the game versus City last week,” AVB said. “These are things that you have to count on. Hopefully it can have a positive effect but it can have a negative effect. Last year he scored from the penalty spot and had a good game and this is the type of revolt and motivation for matches like this.”
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Arsenal have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 61 wins to 48 by Spurs and 41 games being drawn. At The Emirates and Highbury, Arsenal have 38 wins to 18 by Tottenham, with a further 19 meetings ending up all square. As already mentioned, the corresponding match last season on Feb.26 saw Spurs race into a two-goal lead through Louis Saha (4 mins) and Emmanuel Adebayor (34, penalty). Arsenal were level by half-time with two goals in three minutes from Bacary Sagna (40) and Robin van Persie (43) and completed an astonishing turnaround with three goals in the second half, the first from Tomas Rosicky (51) and the last two from Theo Walcott (65, 68). Spurs' misery was complete when Scott Parker was dismissed three minutes from time. The victory for Arsenal avenged an earlier defeat that season at White Hart Lane, a Kyle Walker thunderbolt 17 minutes from time deciding the match after Aaron Ramsey (51) had cancelled out an opener from Rafael van der Vaart (40). Spurs won 3-2 at Arsenal on Nov. 20, 2010, coming from two goals down to record their first victory at the home of their North London rivals for 17 years and in the process break a run of 68 games without an away win against any of the Big Four clubs.
0' FORM GUIDE
Arsenal start the day in eighth place with 16 points from 11 games. Spurs are one point better off and a place higher in the table. Arsenal have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six and have dropped eight points in their last four games. They have, though, been beaten just the once at home, by Chelsea. Spurs have won three and lost three of their last six. Andre Villas-Boas' men have won three times away from home, a record bettered in the Premier League only by leaders Manchester United.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Arsenal have so many people on the treatment table that Arsene Wenger joked in his Friday press conference that the club might need more doctors. Those facing late fitness tests include Olivier Giroud (hamstring/calf), Theo Walcott (buttock), Mikel Arteta (hip) and Bacary Sagna (leg). Definitely out are Gervinho (ankle), Kieran Gibbs (thigh), Abou Diaby (thigh) and Tomas Rosicky (hamstring). The good news is that goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny may return after an ankle problem and Jack Wilshere is available again after suspension. Tottenham will be without former Fulham playmaker Mousa Dembele because of a hip problem and he joins long-term absentees Scott Parker (Achilles), Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Younes Kaboul (both knee) on the sidelines. On the positive side, thee players who were struggling with hamstring complaints – Aaron Lennon, Jermain Defoe and Kyle Walker – have all been declared fit.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
The man taking charge of today's game is the vastly-experienced Howard Webb MBE, the first referee to preside over both the Champions League and World Cup finals in the same season (2010). This is the eighth Premier League appointment of the season for the South Yorkshire whistleblower. He has produced 30 yellow cards in his previous seven outings and dismissed one player, Wigan's Jordi Gomez at Sunderland, an expulsion which saw an end to a run of 26 successive matches for Webb in all competitions without a red card. His assistants today are Mike Mullarkey and Darren Cann, Chris Foy is the fourth official.
