Manchester City vs. Aston Villa
Minute Commentary
90' FT: MAN CITY 5 ASTON VILLA 0
City surge to the top of the table, for a couple of hours at least, after thumping Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium. The scoreline was very harsh on the visitors, who had defended doggedly for the first 40 minutes and even created the clearest opening, with Christian Benteke being denied by an acrobatic save by Joe Hart. City grabbed the lead in the final minute of the first half, David Silva bundling the ball home from close range following a corner. The main talking point, though, was the awarding of a highly debatable penalty nine minutes into the second half, apparently for a handball by Andreas Weimann. Villa were furious, City were surprised, but Sergio Aguero kept his cool after the protests subsided and stepped up to beat Brad Guzan from the spot. Villa conceded another more clear-cut penalty after a handball by Barry Bannan, with Carlos Tevez this time taking the penalty-taking duties. Aguero netted his second with a powerful drive from a narrow angle soon after and Tevez duly added his second 16 minutes from time with a tap-in.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be three minues of added time. The end cannot come soon enough for Villa.
88' SEARCHING FOR A SIXTH
Maicon delivers a dangerous cross in from the right and Vlaar deflects the ball over his own crossbar. That was close to number six.
86' HOLMAN NOT FAR AWAY
Brett Holman almost caps an impressive Villa move with a cracking goal, but his blistering shot goes just over the crossbar.
84' VILLA SUBSTITUTION
Christian Benteke is replaced by Nottingham-born Jordan Bowery, who is making his debut.
83' BARRY NEEDS TREATMENT
Gareth Barry is treated for a facial wound and needs a change of jersey. He returns to the fray wearing number 68.
80' SINCLAIR DENIED
Sinclair gets clear inside the box, cuts back on to his right foot and sees his shot tipped over the bar by Guzan.
78' EASY FOR GUZAN
Yaya Toure curls a 25-yard effort which nestles comfortably in the mid-riff of Brad Guzan.
77' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Scott Sinclair comes on for City, replacing David Silva
75' GOAL: MAN CITY 5 ASTON VILLA 0
City make it five and it's turning into a rout. Villa went to sleep down the left, a ball into the box found Tevez only four yards out and he made no mistake.
74' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Gael Clichy is replaced by Aleksandar Kolarov.
72' IT'S FORTRESS ETIHAD
It looks like City are going to equal Manchester United's run of 36 Premier League games at home without defeat. That ranks second best of all time, a distance behind Chelsea's mark of 86 unbeaten.
68' GOAL: MAN CITY 4 ASTON VILLA 0
Sergio Aguero makes it four for City with a powerful drive from the narrowest of angles after escaping the clutches of the Villa defence. Brad Guzan will be disappointed with that one, although it took a little nick off Stephens. Aguero then makes way for Edin Dzeko.
65' GOAL: MAN CITY 3 ASTON VILLA 0
It's another City penalty. It's handball by Barry Bannan, trying to cut out a cross. Villa can have few complaints this time. Tevez takes the spot-kick and makes it three for the home side.
62' VILLA SUBSTITUTIONS
Holman and Albrighton are coming on for Villa, replacing Ireland and Weimann.
59' A HARSH ONE FOR VILLA
Paul Lambert is certainly not going to be happy with that decision. Even after viewing the replay you would have to say that is a highly debatable call and none of the City players bothered to appeal. It's a long way back for Villa from here.
55' GOAL: MAN CITY 2 VILLA 0
The linesman flags for a penalty after a City corner. It appears there was a handball by Weimann. It's certainly not clear-cut, whatever he saw. Aguero nets from the spot.
52' GREAT CLEARANCE BY VLAAR
A brilliant City move carves Villa apart. Silva tees up Aguero, but Vlaar is across to clear.
51' TEVEZ ONLY JUST WIDE
City press again. Tevez engineers an opening and the low shot goes a fraction wide.
50' LOWTON WASTES AN OPENING
Nastasic makes a bit of a mess of a clearance, but fortunately for him Lowton is not expecting the ball to find its way through and the half-chance is wasted.
48' THROW CAUTION TO THE WINDS
Villa's defensive gameplan worked perfectly until the closing minutes of the half. It's a different story now, of course, they really have to go for it.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
City kick off the second half.
45' HT: MAN CITY 1 ASTON VILLA 0
City lead at the break thanks to a scrappy goal from David Silva, which came from a corner just before the interval. The Spain midfielder bundled the ball over the line after Carlos Tevez had seen an initial attempt blocked. Brad Guzan also made two fines saves to deny Tevez right at the end of the half. In truth, it's been a pretty mundane and uneventful half of football. Villa packed men behind the ball, worked tirelessly and have done just what their manager Paul Lambert would have asked before kick-off. City, for their part, have dominated possession but just like last week against Spurs have shown very little spark at the business end of the pitch until that two or three minutes before the interval. Up to that point the visitors had also created the best chance, a Benteke header producing a magnificent sprawling save by Joe Hart diving to his left.
45' GUZAN SAVES AGAIN
City now look a different side and Tevez forces another super save from Guzan.
44' MORE ON THAT GOAL
The opener came from a City corner. Tevez saw an initial attempt blocked and Silva bundled the ball home.
43' GOAL: MAN CITY 1 VILLA 0
David Silva gives City the lead.
41' FINE SAVE GUZAN
Tevez goes on one of those familiar runs and his drive is pawed wide of the post by Guzan.
40' SHOTS BLOCKED
Villa enjoy a great spell of possession in the City half but Benteke and Agbonlahor both have efforts blocked.
38' TOURE ESCAPES PUNISHMENT
Yaya Toure cynically fells Stephen Ireland and is very lucky not to collect the first yellow card of the match.
35' FRUSTRATION GROWS
You can feel the frustration growing among the City fans. It just isn't happening for the home side and Villa are surely growing in confidence.
31' EASY SAVE FOR GUZAN
City at least manage a shot on target. Clark clears a cross from Maicon, and Nasri's shot is comfortably held by Guzan.
30' TOURE EFFORT TOO HIGH
Toure shoots over from 35 yards, which just highlights how frustrated City are getting at their lack of threat in the final third.
28' NO WAY THROUGH
Villa are defending manfully here, Ron Vlaar's block of a Yaya Toure shot just the latest of many examples. Tevez then blasts well wide from long range.
25' CLICHY NEEDS TREATMENT
Gael Clichy has a leg injury and goes off for treatment. The Frenchman eventually returns and it looks like he is going to try and run it off.
23' NASTASIC HEADS OVER
City hit back and Nastasic heads over the bar from ten yards from a corner. The Serbian was unmarked and should have at least hit the target.
21' GREAT SAVE FROM HART
Villa carve City apart and come close to the opener. Stevens delivers a wonderful cross and Benteke's header looks destined to find the back of the net, only for Hart to make a magnificent save.
18' POOR FRONT-RUNNERS
Even if they go behind in this one, City will be confident of coming back like they did last week. Villa have surrendered 10 points from winning positions this season, with 13 of the 17 goals they have conceded coming in the second half.
17' FLAG SAVES CITY
Villa string several passes together and a cross from Lowton is cut out by Kompany, whose intervention forces Hart into a good save. City are relieved to see the flag had gone up for offside.
15' BENTEKE THWARTED
Ireland and Agbonhalor are involved as Villa mount a threat for the first time. Benteke takes one touch too many and is dispossessed before he can get in a shot.
12' DANGEROUS CROSS
Maicon finds space again rampaging down the right and his driven cross is just out of reach of Tevez, Aguero and Nasri.
11' VISITORS HOLDING FIRM
Nasri delivers a dangerous cross and Aguero turns well before Villa's defence snuffs out the threat and Bannan clears.
9' HOW THEY LINE UP
Gabriel Agbonlahor has started wide on the left for Villa, with Stephen Ireland in an advanced position down the centre playing off Christian Benteke.
7' OVER FROM TEVEZ
City have already forced a string of corners in the opening minutes. Tevez gets in front of Clark and his headed effort flies over the crossbar.
5' NO MILNER AGAIN
James Milner is on the cover of the City programme today, but the former Villa man does not even make the matchday 18. Presumably he is being saved for the Real Madrid match.
4' POOR EFFORT FROM MAICON
Maicon finds some space down the right, but Stevens is across quickly and the Brazilian puts his cross-shot into the stands.
2' CITY ON FRONT FOOT
City are immediately on the attack, but Stevens makes a couple of important early clearances. The youngster really impressed last week on his Premier League debut.
1' HERE WE GO
Villa get the match under way.
0' TEAM NEWS
City make two changes from the side that beat Tottenham, with Samir Nasri and Maicon coming in for Zabaleta and Kolarov, who are both on the bench. There is no place even among the substitutes for Mario Balotelli. Paul Lambert names the same 11 that started against Manchester United.

0' PREVIEW
Manchester City welcome Aston Villa to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday with the champions the shortest price favourites and Villa the longest odds for victory of any head-to-head match-ups in any of the four divisions this weekend. It might have been a little different had the fortunes of both these sides not swung so markedly around the hour mark last weekend. City were faltering and losing at home to Tottenham before goals from Sergio Aguero and supersub Edin Dzeko turned the match around. Two goals up with 57 minutes gone, Villa were in dreamland and on course for a famous victory over leaders Manchester United. That was before another substitute had the final say, Javier Hernandez scoring two goals and being credited with an assist for United's third. Rather than being downhearted over last weekend's defeat, Villa boss Paul Lambert felt his side could take several positives from the match. And he feels two factors might count in the visitors' favour against City. Firstly, they have won on this ground already this season, claiming a 4-2 victory in the third round of the Capital One Cup after extra time back in September. And, despite manager Roberto Mancini's protestations that his side's Champions League plight is hopeless, everyone at the club will have one eye on the visit of Real Madrid on Wednesday. “I don't go with any trepidation,” Lambert told the official Villa website. “At the end of the day, what will happen and happen, but we are definitely going to try and win the game. We are up against a top side, no doubt. They've got Real Madrid in midweek but the club is flooded with star players. But we've been up there before and won and the confidence is high. That's a good thing. The lads are confident they can go up there and do well.” Today's game kicks off at 1500GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Mario Balotelli has netted the first goal of the game on the last two occasions these sides have met at the Etihad, scoring in the 28th minute of the league game last term and the 27th minute of their meeting this season in the Capital One Cup. The Italian will be hoping for a recall, having not even made the matchday 18 for the game with Spurs last weekend. Balotelli has attempted 24 shots without a goal this season, the most shots taken by a player who hasn't found the net in the Premier League. Geography may not be Christian Benteke's strong point, and he might be a Gooner at heart, but Villa fans will doubtless forgive the Belgium if he adds to his four goals (two in the league) at the Etihad this afternoon. The 21-year-revealed in an interview this week that he didn't have a clue where Villa were in England when he signed for them, and that Arsene Wenger's side are his favourite team. “Arsenal are the club I love,” Benteke said. “I like their philosophy of selecting young players and, besides, they had Thierry Henry.” He added: “When I joined Villa I didn't know where they played. I thought they were a London club!”
0' HEAD TO HEAD
City have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 57 wins to 51 by Villa and 38 games being drawn. At the Etihad Stadium and Maine Road, City have 42 wins to 16 by Villa, with a further 15 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season took place on Oct. 15 and resulted in a 4-1 win for City. Their goals game from Mario Balotelli (28 mins), Adam Johnson (47), Vincent Kompany (52) and James Milner (71), with Stephen Warnock (65) replying for the visitors. City went on to complete the double, winning 1-0 at Villa Park on Feb. 12 with Joleon Lescott's 63rd-minute goal proving the difference between the sides. City have won nine of their last ten home games against Villa, enjoying a victory margin of at least two goals in all but one of those matches.
0' FORM GUIDE
City start the day in second place, with 25 points from 11 games. With leaders Manchester United not playing until later in the day, victory would take them to the top of the table. With seven victories and four draws, City remain the only unbeaten team in the division and have gone 17 matches since suffering their last defeat at Arsenal on Apr. 8. Villa are in 17th place with nine points, just three above the relegation zone and a win at Sunderland is their only Premier League success in their last seven outings.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
City have James Milner (hamstring), Joleon Lescott (back) and Gael Clichy (back) available after injury, though Clichy's problem only forced him to sit out France's midweek international against Italy. Clichy's former Arsenal team-mate Samir Nasri is also back in the reckoning after illness, but Jack Rodwell (hamstring) and Micah Richards (knee) are definitely out. Villa were forced to employ a makeshift backline last week, but have full-backs Eric Lichaj and Nathan Baker available after suspension and an ankle injury respectively. Darren Bent, Chris Herd, Richard Dunne, Charles N'Zogbia and Joe Bennett remain out.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Jon Moss, who was appointed to the select group of referees in June 2011. Born in Sunderland, but now living in Leeds, Moss has shown 21 yellow cards in the five top-flight matches he has officiated this season. He was heavily criticised by Everton manager David Moyes over his decision to send off Steven Pienaar at Queen's Park Rangers, the only red card he has produced this season. Moyes, to the point as ever, called it a “rubbish decision”. Moss' assistants today are Simon Beck and Adrian Holmes, while Lee Probert is the fourth official.
