Newcastle United vs. Swansea City
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME REPORT
Swansea's brilliant second half showing was enough to earn them all three points in the North East. Goals from Michu and Jonathan De Guzman put them 2-0 up but Demba Ba grabbed a last minute consolation. Swansea nearly opened the scoring after six minutes through Nathan Dyer but his accuracy wasn't all there. Pablo Hernandez tested Tim Krul and Demba Ba had a few chances for Newcastle but neither team could score in the first half. The second half was completely different. Michu broke the deadlock on 59 minutes after a poor clearance from Tim Krul. Try as they might, the hosts couldn't get level and with three minutes left, De Guzman made it 2-0 after good play from Hernandez. Ba did equalise after 93 minutes but it wasn't enough to save Newcastle from slumping to a second consecutive home defeat. Full time at St James' Park and it's Newcastle 1-2 Swansea.
90' FULL TIME
Phil Dowd blows the whistle and the game is over.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Well well well, this could be a lifeline. Ben Arfa does extremely well to get to the byline and pull back to Sylvain Marveaux who smashes against the bar but DEMBA BA is there to head home.
90' FOUR MINUTES
Newcastle need a miracle if they're to get anything from this game as the fourth official signals four added minutes.
87' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Game over. Pablo Hernandez lofts an exquisite ball across the pitch to Danny Graham who arrows his shot towards the bottom corner. Tim Krul saves his effort but JONATHAN DE GUZMAN is there to fire into the roof of the net from a tight angle.
85' SLOW TEMPO
Both teams appear to be tiring towards the end and the pace of the game has slowed right down. Not long left for an equaliser or for the visitors to double their advantage.
82' GOOD DEFENDING
Great defensive work here from Wayne Routledge as he comes back to halt Hatem Ben Arfa's mazy run. Meanwhile goalscorer Michu leaves the pitch and Danny Graham comes into the fray.
79' SUBSTITUTION
Sylvain Marveaux comes on for his first appearance since September in place of Sammy Ameobi.
76' SHOULD BE GAME OVER
Wayne Routledge times his run perfectly and bears down on goal. He cuts back to Michu who scuffs his shot from six yards and Newcastle restart from a goal kick.
75' SUBSTITUTION
Youngster Gael Bigirimana comes on in place of Danny Simpson.
73' MORE PRESSURE
Hernandez runs down the wing and is brought down by Davide Santon and Swansea have a set-piece in a hazardous position.
71' HALF CHANCE
Wayne Routledge charges down through the centre and plays the ball out wide to Ben Davies who sends a cross to Kemy Agustien, but the Dutchman cannot get a good connection on the ball.
67' HEADACHE
Cheik Tiote gets down to the byline and smashes across to Demba Ba but the power on the ball means the striker has no chance of guiding it in and is nearly knocked out by it. Had Tiote's ball been less powerful Newcastle would have had a certain equaliser.
66' CHANGE FOR SWANSEA
Itay Shechter goes off to be replaced by Kemy Agustien while Angel Rangel receives a yellow card for a foul.
64' SOFT HEADER
Cheik Tiote plays a magnificent cross into Demba Ba whose header is accurate but the lack of power means it causes no trouble for Gerhard Tremmel.
62' SUBSTITUTION
Nathan Dyer comes off to be replaced by Newcastle old boy Wayne Routledge.
59' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Against the run of play Swansea lead. Tim Krul's clearance is woeful and allows Pablo Hernandez to speed down the left wing before crossing for MICHU who guides his header past the 'keeper. Interestingly enough, this is Swansea's first goal in the first 65 minutes of any of the last eight games.
57' WELL OVER
The visitors win a corner and Jonathan De Guzman takes it. His ball over reaches the far post where Nathan Dyer is waiting but the winger smashes over.
56' GLORIOUS CHANCE
And as I say that, Swansea have the best chance of the game. Itay Shechter picks up the ball in the centre about 20 yards out and just needs to compose himself but fires over. It was the perfect opportunity to at least work the goalkeeper.
55' ONE SIDE IN IT
Newcastle are the only team looking like breaking the deadlock and are hammering Gerhard Tremmel's goal with shot after shot.
52' HOW'S HE MISSED?
Sammy Ameobi threads through an amazing pass to Demba Ba who hits the ball first time from 12-yards out but he somehow manages to put it wide. The flag didn't go up and he was in an offside position.
50' ACROBATIC
Davide Santon cuts in and places a peach of a ball onto Demba Ba's chest who contorls before executing an overhead kick which is well saved by Gerhard Tremmel.
49' MENACING
Angel Rangel whips in a great cross but he can't find a man in red and Ben Arfa calmly relieves the pressure.
47' WAYWARD EFFORT
Danny Simpson fires well over the bar after Hatem Ben Arfa's corner is headed away.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Swansea the get the second period up and running. Shola Ameobi joins his brother, Sammy, on the pitch in place of Shane Ferguson.
45' HALF TIME REPORT
Newcastle nor Swansea could find a breakthrough in this first half, but it was far from being a boring 0-0. Newcastle were the better side for the first five minutes but Nathan Dyer broke though after six minutes and dragged his shot wide when he should have scored. Ben Arfa - by far the best player on the pitch so far - was instrumental in every Newcastle attack and carved out three or four chances of his own but couldn't beat the impressive Gerhard Tremmel. Pablo Hernandez tried from range and down the other end Demba Ba should have done better with a couple of headers. Half time and it's 0-0.
45' HALF TIME
Phil Dowd blows his whistle and the first half is over.
45' HEADED OVER
Shane Ferguson's cross is headed over by Demba Ba who should do better. This will be the last action of the first half.
45' NOT VERY ACCURATE
Davide Santon gifts possession to Swansea who push forward but their own mistake when playing the ball out wide gives the hosts a throw in deep in their own half.
43' FREE HEADER
Garry Monk meets Jonathan De Guzman's cross with a powerful header when unmarked but it's blocked and Newcastle clear the ball.
41' GOOD CHANCE
Michu starts the move and nearly finishes it with a goal as he gives the ball to Pablo Hernandez before making his way into the box to meet Hernandez's cross.
39' BEAUTIFUL PLAY
The home side are in control and are passing the ball about the pitch wonderfully trying to break through a stubborn defence.
36' GREAT STOP
Immediately Swansea get the ball down the other end. An aimless ball up the pitch from Ashley Williams causes panic between Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson, allowing Pablo Hernandez to nick in but Tim Krul denies him brilliantly.
34' MAGNIFICENT SAVE
The ever-dangerous Ben Arfa picks up the ball to the left of the box and swerves around to the centre before unleashing a powerful shot that hurtles towards the top corner but Gerhard Tremmel sticks out his left arm to tip round superbly.
31' NO ONE THERE
Hatem Ben Arfa once again plays in a cross to the perfect area for someone to attack the ball but no one takes the chance and the ball drifts out for a goal kick.
28' SO CLOSE
Hatem Ben Arfa plays over a lovely ball and plants it on Demba Ba's head but his effort is just wide when he should score. The two are linking up well today.
26' BOOKING
Leon Britton is shown a yellow card for hacking down Cheik Tiote. The home side have a free kick in a promising position.
24' CALM
After several Swansea attacks and sustained pressure, Newcastle are finally grabbing hold of the game and playing how they want to.
21' PENALTY SHOUT
Pablo Hernandez is screaming at Phil Dowd as he thinks his team should have a penalty when his cross appears to hit Mike Williamson's arm but Dowd isn't interested.
19' CORNER
Danny Simpson picks the ball up on the right and his cross is heading straight for Demba Ba but a Swansea defenders is there to head away.
17' DANGEROUS
Crosses are coming in from the visitors, Angel Rangel is the latest to put over a promising ball but no one is there to meet it.
16' NEEDLESS
Cheik Tiote barges Itay Shechter over and complains to referee Phil Dowd as he awards a free kick.
13' AT IT AGAIN
Ben Arfa is again doing the work as his trickery enables him to weave between players before letting loose from an acute angle.
12' MILES OVER
Frenchman Ben Arfa tries his luck from 30 yards after intercepting, but his shot was never going to trouble Gerhard Tremmel in the Swansea goal.
10' COMFORTABLE SAVE
Swansea counter with speed but a poor pass from Nathan Dyer means Pablo Hernandez has to try from range but doesn't cause Tim Krul any problems.
8' HALF CHANCE
Hatem Ben Arfa - sporting an odd combination of short sleeves and gloves - lofts a fantastic ball over to Demba Ba but the Senegalese has very little to aim at from a tight angle and his powerful strike is saved.
6' MARVELLOUS CHANCE
Nathan Dyer bursts through the hosts' defence and drags his poor effort wide - he should have done better there.
3' CONTENT
Michael Laudrup is smiling on the touchline. This can't be anything to do with recent form or this game as his Swansea team have been spectators as the home side maintain possession excellently.
2' EARLY PRESSURE
Sammy Ameobi whips over a dangerous cross but Ashley Williams is there to clear.
1' WE'RE OFF
Newcastle kick off and are shooting from right to left.
0' SWANSEA TEAM NEWS
Pablo Hernandez does make the starting XI after being declared doubtful. Full line-up: Tremmel; Rangel, Williams, Monk, Davies; Britton, De Guzman, Hernandez; Dyer, Michu, Shechter. Subs: Cornell, Flores, Graham, Routledge, Moore, Tiendalli, Agustien.
0' NEWCASTLE TEAM NEWS
As originally thought, Papiss Cisse does not feature. Full line-up: Krul; Simpson, Taylor, Williamson, Santon; Ben Arfa, Anita, Tiote, Ferguson; Sa Ameobi, Ba. Subs: Elliot, Amalfitano, Bigirimana, Marveaux, Sh Ameobi, Tavernier, Abeid.
0' PREVIEW
Newcastle head into this weekend's clash on the back of a shock defeat at St James' Park to West Ham United last Sunday, and news that Papiss Cisse may not be able to feature due to Senegal threatening to invoke a FIFA ruling won't have done much to raise the mood in the North East. Their opposition today have been off the pace in recent weeks and have only registered one win since the end of August, having topped the table comfortably at the start of the season.
0' EUROPE PLAYING A PART
The home side have already played in 19 games this term and their European ventures appear to be taking their toll on Newcastle of late - they're 11 points and eight places worse off than at this stage last season. However, a victory in their next Europa League game would confirm their passage through to the next round, giving Alan Pardew's men three months to concentrate on their domestic campaign.
0' SWANS ON THE SLIDE
Michael Laudrup's troops haven't been in the greatest of form lately, with only one win in their last ten outings in the Premier League, despite earning a creditable hard-fought draw with Chelsea a fortnight ago. Swans fans can't really have a sceptical attitude to the season so far however, as they boast an identical record to their start last season under Brendan Rodgers - 11th place is two positions higher than mid-November 2011 for the Jacks.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Last season was the first set of top flight games between these two sides in each of the clubs' history. Newcastle haven't conceded in their last three fixtures against Swansea at the recently renamed St James' Park, and they will be hoping to keep up the trend of tight defensive displays today. Swansea haven't overcome the Magpies since 1980 when they edged a 2-1 game at today's venue. However, they did hold today's hosts to a goalless draw in the corresponding fixture last season.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Staffordshire-based Phil Dowd takes charge of today's game. He has been a Premier League listed official since 2001 and last week took charge of the eventful 3-3 draw between Arsenal and Fulham at the Emirates Stadium. He's no stranger to showing cards, having issued 45 yellows and sent three players for an early bath in his 11 games this season.
