Norwich City vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: NORWICH 1 MAN UTD 0
A superb second-half header from Anthony Pilkington gives Norwich one of the most incredible results the Premier League has seen for many a season. Sir Alex Ferguson said during the week that he did not remember the former United junior, but he will certainly remember the Blackburn-born midfielder after today. Pilkington got in front of Chris Smalling to meet a left-wing cross from Javier Garrido on the hour and angle a perfectly-placed effort into the far corner beyond Anders Lindegaard. This was no fluke result, the Canaries got exactly what their efforts deserved while United were off the pace and a shadow of the potent attacking force we have seen in recent weeks. John Ruddy made fine saves at either end of the first half to deny Robin van Persie and Ashley Young, but the visitors missed the influence of Wayne Rooney, who was sidelined with tonsillitis. United therefore spurned the opportunity to retake their position at the top of the table from rivals Manchester City, who hammered Villa earlier in the afternoon.
90' RUDDY THERE AGAIN
Ruddy saves well again, this time from a long-range effort by Anderson. He gathers the loose ball ahead of Paul Scholes and there's the final whistle!
90' RUDDY'S VITAL SAVE
A great save by Ruddy prevents Bassong heading an own goal from a Van Persie free-kick. Norwich survive.
90' MAN UTD BOOKING
Rafael is cautioned for dissent, the first booking of the game.
90' NORWICH SUBSTITUTION
There will be four additional minutes. Robert Snodgrass is currently down with cramp. Snodgrass is replaced by Elliott Bennett.
90' WOEFUL MISS BY HOWSON
Norwich have a two-on-one break from a United attack. Morison puts Howson in the clear, but with only Lindegaard to beat he screws a shot wide.
89' TAME SHOT BY JOHNSON
Johnson cuts in off the left flank but his right-foot effort lacks the venom to trouble Lindegaard.
86' NORWICH HOLDING FIRM
Young's cross is aimed for Welbeck, but the England striker is off balance as he met the ball and is unable to direct the ball goalwards.
83' SUBSTITUTIONS
Norwich make a double switch, with Steve Morison and Jonny Howson replacing Grant Holt and Wes Hoolahan. Anderson replaces Rio Ferdinand for United.
80' BRAVE DEFENDING
Giggs looks poised to get on the end of a Young cross from the right, but Whittaker is alert to the danger and makes a brave clearing header.
76' WELBECK DENIED
United finally mount a threat and Young stands up a cross from the right that Welbeck almost gets on the end of. His effort hits a Norwich defender and goes out for a corner which the home side have some difficulty clearing.
74' DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS
Norwich are on course for their fifth clean sheet in their opening 12 games having managed only three in the whole of last season.
70' UNITED SUBSTITUTIONS
Paul Scholes, who scored here last season, and Danny Welbeck are introduced, with Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez making way.
68' KEEP PUSHING FORWARD
Norwich will have to defend for all their worth here, they know that. But they cannot afford to drop deep and let United come on to them, as the same will happen to them as happened to Aston Villa last week.
66' COMEBACK KINGS
United have trailed in 11 of their 18 games this season, but have come back to win eight of them. Chris Hughton will know this game is far from over.
64' OPTIONS ON THE BENCH
Surely Sir Alex has to go to his bench soon to shake things up as United have been distinctly average going forward today. Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley are among those on the bench.
62' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a picture-book goal. Garrido delivered a magnificent cross from the left, bettered only by a majestic header from the former United junior, who directed his effort into the far corner, giving Lindegaard absolutely no chance.
60' GOAL: NORWICH 1 MAN UTD 0
Anthony Pilkington gives Norwich the lead.
57' LOOKING OFF COLOUR
Looking at United today, it's hard to imagine that they have netted 29 goals already this season, the most in their first 11 league games since netting 32 to start the 2001-02 campaign.
54' KEEP AN EYE ON HOOLAHAN
Hoolahan has been instrumental in the bulk of Norwich's attacking play in the first half. He has a real eye for space, is comfortable on the ball, passes and crosses well and is not afraid of going for goal. It is somewhat surprising none of the bigger clubs have expressed a real interest in him, because given a choice between Ashley Young and Hoolahan I know who I would have in my team, and it's not the England man. The only reason he doesn't get more recognition is that he doesn't play in a dominant team who have world-class strikers to bury the chances.
52' LINDEGAARD LOOKS UNSTEADY
Snodgrass makes the most of a challenge from Evra and milks the contact for all its worth to earn his side a free-kick. Lindegaard flaps feebly at the delivery from the Scotland midfielder, but his defence comes to the rescue.
49' VAN PERSIE THREATENS
Young picks out a fine ball to find Van Persie in the box. Again the Dutchman makes a hash of his initial volley, but still manages to get in a shot that Ruddy saves. Hernandez was well-placed for a pull-back, but was ignored by his strike partner.
47' HISTORY IN THE MAKING
It has been 78 games in all competitions since United were last involved in a goalless draw.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
United kick off the second half. Neither side has made any changes at the break.
45' HT: NORWICH 0 MAN UTD 0
It's goalless at the break and for that Norwich can take a lot of credit. The Canaries looked porous at the back early in the season, but they have looked far more disciplined in recent weeks and have carried on the good work today. United's only real chances came in the opening and closing minutes of the half, John Ruddy diving to his right to turn a low shot from Robin van Persie round the post and then doing even better to divert aside a low drive from Ashley Young. The home side have gradually grown in confidence and started to cause one or two threats of their own, with Robert Snodgrass heading not far wide and Javier Garrido blazing a cross-shot across the face of goal. It's been an intriguing first 45 minutes, if not the most entertaining in terms of goalmouth action.
44' SUPER STOP FROM RUDDY
Young is left unmarked at a right-wing corner from van Persie and forces Ruddy into a superb save diving to his right.
42' MIS-KICK FROM VAN PERSIE
Ryan Giggs picks out Robin van Persie with a delightful dinked ball over the top. With the ball dropping over his shoulder the Dutchman swivels and mis-kicks horribly. It was not an easy chance, but one RVP will feel he probably should have taken.
38' SMALLING TO THE RESCUE
Norwich threaten again. Snodgrass gets the better of Ferdinand down the right and Smalling has to make an excellent challenge to smuggle the ball away from danger with Holt lurking.
34' UNLUCKY OMEN?
The last time Anders Lindegaard started for United was coincidentally the last time they lost, beaten 3-2 at home by Tottenham.
32' EASY SAVE FOR LINDEGAARD
Hoolahan is in the thick of the action again, laying the ball square for Tettey, whose shot is on target but easy for Lindegaard.
30' HOOLAHAN A FREQUENT THREAT
There was an interesting statistic produced ahead of this game, which showed that Wes Hoolahan ranked fourth among Premier League players in terms of fewest minutes played per chance created in open play. The only three ahead of him were David Silva, Santi Cazorla and Luis Suarez, so he's in good company. It's also worth noting for fantasy football purposes.
28' CANARIES GETTING CLOSER
Norwich are beginning to believe here. Garrido gets in on the overlap down the left and fizzes a low ball into the box that none of his team-mates can quite get on the end of.
25' SNODGRASS HEADS WIDE
Hoolahan causes United problems down the Norwich left and crosses for Snodgrass, whose glancing header is not too far wide of the far post.
22' HEADED CHANCE FOR EVRA
That's better by Young. He dispossesses Tettey around half-way and finds Hernandez, whose progress is halted by a fine tackle from Turner. Evra fails to make the most of a headed opportunity from the resulting Young corner.
20' YOUNG OFF THE PACE
Young was taken off at half-time by Sir Alex at Villa Park last weekend. He could do with a performance today, the England man, he looks nowhere near as dangerous as Antonio Valencia down the opposite flank.
18' LINDEGAARD CALLED INTO ACTION
Hoolahan finds the ball at his feet in space in a central position. His 25-yard effort forces Lindegaard to make a diving stop to his left, but it was a comfortable save in truth.
16' TAME SHOT BY YOUNG
United win a free-kick more than 30 yards from goal. Young gives the ball to Giggs, gets it back and curls a tame shot that is nothing more than catching practice for Ruddy.
14' STRANGE BUT TRUE
Robin van Persie has scored as many goals (eight) as Norwich City in the Premier League this season.
11' PILKINGTON FIRES WIDE
Norwich break at pace from a United corner. Pilkington collects the ball from Hoolahan and he shoots across the face of goal. Credit to Valencia for some excellent tracking back for United, putting the Norwich man under pressure and sparing the blushes of his right-back Rafael.
9' HERNANDEZ INCHES AWAY
United look purposeful again going forward. Van Persie feeds Valencia in space wide on the right and his cross is just over the head of Hernandez.
6' SNODGRASS BLASTS OVER
Robert Snodgrass collects a short throw-in and smashes a left-foot half-volley from long range that clears the bar by a comfortable margin.
4' RUDDY BUSY ALREADY
United threaten early on. Carrick and Giggs combine to tee up Van Persie, whose low shot is pawed away from his right-hand post by John Ruddy. That's a good save.
3' ONLY A WIN WILL DO
Because Manchester City thumped Aston Villa earlier and improved their goal difference substantially, a draw will not be good enough for United to retake their place at the summit. Only a win will do.
2' REASONS FOR CHANGE
Sir Alex Ferguson revealed before the match that Wayne Rooney is absent because he has been suffering from tonsillitis. David De Gea underwent some major dental work on Friday, which is why he hasn't travelled to Norfolk either.
1' HERE WE GO
Norwich get the game under way, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS
United make three changes, with Javier Hernandez replacing Wayne Rooney, Anders Lindegaard coming in for the unwell David de Gea and Ryan Giggs taking the place of another elder statesman, Paul Scholes, in midfield. Norwich field the same side that started the match at Reading last time out.

0' PREVIEW
With Manchester City hosting Aston Villa earlier in the day, there is a good chance Manchester United will be off the Premier League summit by the time they kick-off at Carrow Road in the top-flight's late game on Saturday. Sir Alex Ferguson takes no notice of the league table at this early stage of the season anyway, but even he must have an air of satisfaction over how his charges have clawed their way to the top in recent weeks without being anywhere near their best. Last week's thrilling victory at Aston Villa is a case in point. For an hour United were outplayed by a younger, hungrier side, but used their greater experience to erase a two-goal deficit to earn what might be one of their most crucial three points of the season when the trophies are handed out in May. Norwich have already been handed out some harsh lessons in front of their own fans by the big clubs since their promotion back to the big time two seasons ago. Manchester City scored six against them last season and Liverpool bagged five at Carrow Road back in September. Somewhat, surprising, then, that going into this match they have kept successive clean sheets in the league for the first time in more than two years. What chance a third in a row today? Today's game kicks off at 1730GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYER TO WATCH
Javier Hernandez came off the bench last weekend and scored twice at Villa Park to turn the game in United's favour. Chicharito now has 16 goals as a substitute for United, 12 behind the ultimate supersub, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After a disappointing second season the Mexican is back on the rampage, with seven goals in his last five appearances, including the goal at Braga that clinched United's place in the knockout stages of the Champions League, plus winners at Chelsea and Villa. Sir Alex has given every indication that Hernandez will be rewarded for his scoring exploits with a place in the starting line-up today.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 30 wins to 10 by Norwich and 12 games being drawn. At Carrow Road, United have 13 wins to seven by the Canaries, with a further six meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season took place on Feb.26, with a last-minute goal from Ryan Giggs snatching a 2-1 win for United, Grant Holt (83 mins) having cancelled out an early opener from Paul Scholes. That result completed the double for the Red Devils, who had won 2-0 at Old Trafford on Oct. 1, with second-half goals from Anderson (68) and Danny Welbeck (87). United have won on six of their last seven trips to Carrow Road, the only blemish being a 2-0 defeat in April 2005 when Dean Ashton (55) and Leon McKenzie (66) scored for the home side.
0' FORM GUIDE
United kicked off the day top of the table with 27 points from 11 games, while Norwich were 15th with 11 points from the same number of matches. United have picked up 15 points away from home, more than any other club in the top flight, winning five in a row after losing 1-0 to Everton in their opening game of the season. Those five victories away from home is equal to the number the bottom 11 teams in the division have managed between them. Norwich have lost just once at home this season, a 5-2 hammering by Chelsea. They proved they are more than a match for the big sides, however, with a 1-0 win over misfiring Arsenal last month. The Canaries are unbeaten in their last four, having failed to collect a win in their opening seven games of the season. United are on a run of five successive victories in the league.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Norwich defender Russell Martin is again ruled out with a back injury, but Alex Tettey's back problem is less severe and he should be available, despite missing Norway's midweek friendly with Hungary as a precaution. On-loan striker Harry Kane remains out with a broken metatarsal. United have major concerns over Wayne Rooney (ankle) and Jonny Evans (groin), but Robin van Persie is expected to be fit having missed Holland's midweek friendly with Germany with a thigh problem.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Anthony Taylor, who has been a member of the Premier League's elite group of referees since 2010. The Manchester-based official refereed 18 games in the top flight last season, showing 56 yellow cards and dismissing four players. Neither of his first two top-flight appointments of this season have managed to produce an incident worthy of even a caution, but he has since sent off three players in his last six Premier League outings: Swansea's Nathan Dyer against Everton, QPR's Stephane Mbia at Arsenal and Newcastle's Fabricio Coloccini at Anfield a fortnight ago. Taylor's assistants today are Richard West and Peter Bankes, while Neil Swarbrick is the fourth official.
