90' SAINTS BEAT RANGERS IN 'EL SACKICO'
It was billed as 'El Sackico', and on the evidence of this game, it's Mark Hughes who will be looking for a new job come Monday. His QPR side were confidently brushed aside by a Southampton team that showed bags of promise, and ran out 3-1 winners at Loftus Road this afternoon. First half goals from Rickie Lambert and Jason Puncheon put the visitors 2-0 up at the break, but the introduction of Jamie Mackie at half time seemed to spur the home side on, with Junior Hoilett nodding in to pull a goal back for Rangers. However, after a brief spell in control of the game, QPR faded and allowed Southampton to play some truly wonderful stuff - although QPR's at times woeful defending didn't help. That woeful defending allowed the Saints to bag a third, when Puncheon's fizzed cross was diverted into his own net by Anton Ferdinand. A banner was unfurled at the QPR end in the latter stages of the game that read, 'Harry Come and Save Us', but even Mr Redknapp would have a huge job on his hands based on Rangers' performance this afternoon.
90' FULL TIME
That's it. Southampton claim only their second victory of the season, but what a priceless three points it could turn out to be. QPR really were poor, and are still searching for that all-important maiden win.
90' SOUTHAMPTON SUB
Big standing ovation for Rickie Lambert who is replaced by Jay Rodriguez. Another storming game for the big striker; he's done well.
89' PETERING OUT
Still no QPR resistance, as Southampton appear happy to simply see out the rest of the game. They're still well in control, with QPR unable to get out their half.
85' TEACUPS AT THE READY
I said I wouldn't want to be in the QPR dressing room at half time. Well, I unequivocally wouldn't want to be in there after the final whistle. Barring a brief spell at the beginning of the second period, Mark Hughes' men have lacked enthusiasm and any kind of creativity. On top of their dreadfully poor defending, Hughes certainly will not be happy.
83' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Calamitous, woeful, disastrous: three words to describe QPR's defending for Southampton's third goal. Jason Puncheon plays a short corner, and the QPR players don't react at all, allowing Puncheon to receive the ball back and play a fizzed cross into the box that Anton Ferdinand duly diverts into his own net.
83' GOAL!
Anton Ferdinand scores an own goal for Southampton!
81' FREE HEADER
Esteban Granero whips in a corner from the right and the unmarked Ryan Nelsen gets up well to head goalwards, but his effort is straight at Paulo Gazzaniga, who claims easily.
80' MORE ACROBATICS
Maya Yoshida tries showing Djibril Cisse how it's done with a similarly acrobatic effort at goal. His, unlike Cisse's, is on target, and forces Julio Cesar into a smart save to his left.
78' ANOTHER PUNCHEON EFFORT
He's done well today has Jason Puncheon, but I hope he doesn't end up regretting some of his misses this afternoon. He has another chance from the right-hand side, but his shot is saved down low by Julio Cesar.
77' ACROBATIC EFFORT
With his back to goal, Djibril Cisse attempts a speculative overhead kick from the edge of the box, but ends up watching it fly well wide of the post. Only Trevor Sinclair can score goals like that for Rangers, Djibril.
74' SOUTHAMPTON SUB
Danny Fox comes on for the youngster Luke Shaw, who has done brilliantly in this game. Bit perplexed as to why he's been brought off, actually.
74' QPR SUB
Fabio replaces the yellow-carded Jose Bosingwa, returning to first team action for the first time in almost two months.
73' ACROSS GOAL
Puncheon goes close again for Southamption, fizzing a shot across goal that Julio Cesar does well to tip wide.
72' CHANCE SQUANDERED
Adel Taarabt plays through Djibril Cisse, who has been almost invisible in the second half, and the French striker closes in on goal before pulling the ball back and curling wide of the far post.
71' QPR SUB
Shaun Derry replaces Samba Diakite in midfield. Not exactly the most attack-minded substitution in history.
69' YELLOW CARD
Jose Bosingwa is the first player in Mike Dean's book, after handling the ball just outside the area.
66' BIG CHANCE WASTED
Southampton might well go on to rue this miss, as Jason Puncheon lashes wide of the QPR goal. Morgan Schneiderlin had propped the ball up to Rickie Lambert at the back post, who put it on a plate for Puncheon with his head, but the winger dragged his effort off target.
64' SUPERB SKILL
Adel Taarabt nicks the ball off Jack Cork on the left flank, before producing a marvellous bit of skill to tie the Saints midfielder in knots. He promptly crosses with the outside of his right boot, but there's nobody in the box to finish off what would have been a well-worked move.
61' SOUTHAMPTON SUB
Gaston Ramirez is replaced by Steven Davis, who will undoubtedly add a bit of bite to the Saints midfield.
58' TOP DRAWER FOOTBALL
Southampton have regained some control in this match, and appear to have weathered the QPR storm for now. They're back playing some lovely one-touch football, which really is good to watch. No real openings as yet for the Saints in the second half, though.
55' FIZZED ACROSS GOAL
Jason Puncheon does really well in the QPR box, taking the ball to the byline and whipping in a scintilating cross in the direction of Rickie Lambert, who tries to steer the ball home but can't quite connect.
53' STILL NO CLEAN SHEET
Hoilett's goal of course means that Southampton's search for that all-important first clean sheet is prolonged. They won't care if it means going away with three points today, though.
50' BACK UP THE OTHER END
Adam Lallana and Jason Puncheon both see decent efforts blocked and then saved. It's important that Southampton don't allow their opponents a bigger foothold in this one. As it stands, QPR are on top.
48' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Hughes couldn't have asked for a better response from his players in this second half, as Junior Hoilett nods his side back into the game. Taarabt crosses from the right, and Paulo Gazzaniga is caught in two minds as to whether to come out or not. In actual fact, he does neither, allowing Hoilett to head in from inside the box. Very tasty fixture now.
48' GOAL!
Junior Hoilett scores for QPR!
48' GOOD CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
Jose Fonte heads narrowly wide from an Adam Lallana corner at one end, while Djibril Cisse angles an effort straight at Paulo Gazzaniga at the other.
46' QPR SUB
Mark Hughes has shuffled things around for the second half, replacing Alejandro Faurlin with Jamie Mackie, who appears to have buoyed the Rangers faithful already.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Southampton start the second half. Can they hold on to their lead?
45' HALF TIME
The Saints go into the break two goals in front of a lacklustre QPR side who have barely looked like they want to score, nevermind actually threatening. Nigel Adkins will be a very happy man so far.
45' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Southampton double their lead and you can't say they don't deserve it. They've been clinical so far this afternoon. A throw-in from the right is played in towards Jason Puncheon, who in one movement curls the ball beautifully past Julio Cesar and into the far corner of the goal. I'd hate to be in the QPR dressing room at half time now...
45' GOAL!
Jason Puncheon scores for Southampton!
45' GOOD CHANCE
Much better from QPR. Samba Diakite props up a really good cross in the direction of Cisse, who is beaten to it by a Saints defender.
43' LACK OF AMBITION GOING FORWARD
QPR aren't really looking like they want to get back into the game. Esteban Granero is played through in a really good position down the right flank and although the ball runs out for a goal kick, there was only Djibril Cisse lurking in the Southampton box. Granero is good, but I'm not sure he's good enough to pick out a team-mate amongst four or five defenders.
40' DRIVEN WIDE
Morgan Schneiderlin gives the ball away to Adel Taarabt in a really bad area, and Taarabt plays in Esteban Granero, whose shot across goal is only a couple of feet shy of the bottom corner.
37' FIRST CLEAN SHEET?
It might be a bit premature to suggest this, but Southampton are yet to keep a clean sheet this season - the only Premier League side to not do so. Could today be the day that changes?
33' HANDBALL SHOUT
Adam Lallana whips in a decent corner from the left and Gaston Ramirez heads goalwards at the back post. It hits Nelsen and the Southampton players appeal for handball. Replays show it probably hit the Kiwi's midriff.
31' DISAPPOINTING SET PLAY
Adel Taarabt - often so dangerous from free kicks - hammers one straight into the Southampton wall from about 25 yards out. Very disappointing.
29' SAINTS ON TOP
After threatening for a brief period, QPR are struggling to get a foot on the ball at the minute. Ryan Nelsen has got them out of jail on a couple of occasions with some important interventions, and the Saints are looking rather lively.
26' LAST GASP DEFENDING
Swift counter attack from Southampton, as Gaston Ramirez plays a ball into Adam Lallana in the QPR box, but Ryan Nelsen is there to brilliantly prevent the Saints skipper from crossing into the onrushing Lambert in the centre.
23' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Rickie Lambert opens the scoring for the visitors after a scramble in the box and some woeful QPR defending. Jason Puncheon's shot is blocked on the line by Jose Bosingwa, and Julio Cesar pulls of a brilliant point-blank save from Gaston Ramirez, but on the rebound, Lambert is there to nod in from a couple of yards out.
23' GOAL!
Rickie Lambert scores for Southampton!
20' RANGERS IN THE GAME NOW
QPR were a bit slow to get going but are now on a level playing field with their opponents, stringing a number of decent passes together in midfield.
16' TIPPED ROUND THE POST
Junior Hoilett receives the ball on the edge of the box, pushes it onto his right foot and attempts to curl it into the far corner. Paulo Gazzaniga sprawls himself across his goal and manages to tip the ball round the post. From the resulting corner, he produces a bit of questionable goalkeeping - completely missing an atempted punch, with Ryan Nelsen luckily nodding over the bar.
15' DRIVING RUN
Excellent driving run from Adel Taarabt, who picks up the ball in midfield from Ryan Nelsen and from then on has one thing on his mind. Skipping past a number of Southampton bodies, he makes his way into the box and ends up firing into the side netting.
11' NEED A GAMBLER
Anton Ferdinand trots upfield for a corner and manages to get his head to the ball, only to see none of his team-mates in the six-yard box. Poor stuff from QPR. No wonder they've only scored three goals at home this year.
9' WOODWORK
Jason Puncheon curls in an effort from the right flank about 30 yards out. It evades everyone and ends up skipping off the surface and bouncing off the far post. Julio Cesar was scrambling, and probably wouldn't have got there.
7' SUPERB MOVE
Exhibition stuff from Southampton, who string a selection of beautiful passes together in the QPR half, culminating in Adam Lallana volleying wide from the edge of the box. Really good move.
2' SPACE OPENED UP
First chance goes to to the visitors, as Rickie Lambert seizes on an opening on the edge of the box, only to see his shot blocked by the QPR defence.
1' WE'RE OFF
QPR get things underway, kicking right to left in the first half. El Sackico, here we go.

0' SOUTHAMPTON EARLY TEAM NEWS
Frazer Richardson and Richard Chaplow miss out, but Guly do Prado could return after being left out last weekend against Swansea.
0' QPR EARLY TEAM NEWS
Full back Fabio is in line to return after two months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, while Ryan Nelsen, Kieron Dyer and Hogan Ephraim are all available after shaking off knocks. Bobby Zamora is a doubt, Stephane Mbia is still suspended and Park Ji-sung is definitely out.
0' HEAD-TO-HEAD
These two teams last met in the Championship in 2008/09, with QPR taking four points from those games. They won 4-1 at Loftus Road in that season, but none of their scorers on that day are still with the club now. In 1996 – the year that both sides last had top-flight status together – Mark Hughes was enjoying a new lease of life at Chelsea while Nigel Adkins was in the twilight of his career with Bangor City. Southampton took three points from the first match at The Dell, with Jason Dodd and Matt Le Tissier on the scoresheet, while QPR won 3-0 at Loftus Road thanks to goals from Rufus Brevett, Danny Dichio and Kevin Gallen. The all-time head-to-head record remains almost dead even, with Southampton winning 27 times, QPR 26 and 21 draws between the sides in 74 meetings dating back to 1920.
0' STAT ATTACK
QPR are the first team to go winless in their first 11 Premier League games since Norwich City did so in 2004/05. The Canaries' first win came on November 20 – a 2-1 victory over none other than Southampton. Meanwhile, the 29 goals conceded by the Saints in their first 11 league games is the most by a top-flight team since West Brom allowed 32 goals in the first 11 games of the 1985/86 season. To add insult to injury, and to perhaps swing the favour in QPR's direction, Nigel Adkins' men are the only team to fail to take a point away from home this season, losing all five games away from St Mary's, and being outscored 18-5 in the process.
0' RELEGATION SIX-POINTER
Apologies in advance for this, but this afternoon's clash between QPR and Southampton has been labelled – wait for it – ‘El Sackico'. It might make you cringe, but in actual fact, it sums up the premise of this game quite nicely. Both QPR boss Mark Hughes and Southampton manager Nigel Adkins have been subject to intense speculation about their future at their respective clubs in recent weeks, and a defeat today could be the final straw for either man.
0' THE MATCH
Nineteenth-placed Southampton travel to bottom side QPR this afternoon for what is being billed as the Premier League's first relegation six-pointer of 2012/13 season. It's set to be very tasty indeed. Kick-off is 1500 GMT.
