90' A GAME OF TWO HALVES
West Ham United emerged from the break a team transformed but couldn't press home the advantage in a 1-1 draw with Stoke City at Upton Park. The first half was a stodgy affair that Stoke shaded with a top-notch 13th minute strike from the edge of the area by Jonathan Walters, after which Steven N'Zonzi rattled the crossbar with a 25-yard effort. The second half saw the Hammers overrun their opponents with a sudden rush of energy, and they duly scored after 48 minutes when Joey O'Brien burst clear to smash a shot past Asmir Begovic. The remainder of the game saw Stoke's area come under intense bombardment, with the hosts creating a plethora of chances but proving unable to force the ball home. In the end the Potters will feel fortunate to have escaped with a point.

Gary O'Neil takes a corner short to Maiga and receives the ball back. The former Portsmouth midfielder almost beats the shellshocked Begovic with a shot from a ludicrous angle that so nearly bends inside the near post.

West Ham see another shot blocked on the line as O'Neil's drive through a crowd of players is chested out by Whelan. At this rate the home side will surely get a second goal before long.

Andy Carroll rises above the pack to nod down a corner, whereupon Modibi Maiga stabs it goalwards. Shotton blocks it on the line and the ball bounces out to Gary O'Neil, who sends a low effort streaking across the face of goal. Winston Reid finds himself in the shot's path but can't react quickly enough to divert it into the unguarded net.

Glenn Whelan chops down McCartney to give away a free kick in a dangerous position. Noble curls it into the box, but Peter Crouch is on hand to head clear.

The Hammers aren't leaving it at that; the tempo of their play has ramped up considerably and the Stoke midfield can't get on the ball at present.

This time West Ham take full advantage of some inspired play. Mark Noble sets JOEY O'BRIEN free with a super pass, and the full back makes no mistake to beat the goalkeeper with a rasping drive that slams into the back of the net. What on earth did Big Sam say to them at half time?
46' WHAT A MISS
West Ham break at speed from a Stoke corner and George McCartney crosses for Kevin Nolan, who looks certain to score. The midfielder gets caught in two minds and ends up kneeing the ball straight at the grateful Begovic.

The teams are back out and the second half is underway, with neither manager having made any half time substitutions.
45' IT'S ALL TO PLAY FOR
The first half here at Upton Park has been everything you might expect from a meeting between these two teams. Composure and control have been in short supply and chances have been few, but Stoke have emerged on top with the only goal so far. Jonathan Walters was the man who made the difference in the 13th minute, netting with a terrific shot from the edge of the box, after which West Ham drove forward but couldn't conjure up a final ball. Indeed it was the Potters who came closest to grabbing the second goal of the match, Steven N'Zonzi striking the crossbar with a 25-yard belter. If one team can step up their game the three points are still very much for the taking.

Mohamed Diame attempts to seize the bull by the horns with an impressive solo run that takes him past three defenders, but in the end the midfielder is forced wide and can only hit the side-netting.

Nolan seems alright to continue after careful application of the magic sponge.

Glenn Whelan sportingly knocks the ball out of touch as he notices Kevin Nolan lying in a crumpled heap following a strong challenge from Ryan Shotton. The West Ham skipper isn't one to stay down, so it could be a nasty one.

Steven N'Zonzi has got his shooting boots on; this time his shot from 25 yards bends over the stranded Jaaskelainen and cannons back off the crossbar. The Frenchman deserved a goal for the quality of that effort.

N'Zonzi controls a cross on his chest and fires a volley yards wide of the left-hand post. James Tomkins was in attendance but appeared strangely reluctant to close his opponent down.

West Ham are surging forward at every opportunity, but they can't find the final ball at the moment. There's still a distinct lack of finesse to this match.

The Potters work a terrific passing move, culminating in Andy Wilkinson slipping a ball inside and waiting for the return pass from Charlie Adam that never comes. Wilkinson is hopping mad; he would've been clean through there.

Charlie Adam spots the goalkeeper off his line and tries an audacious effort from inside his own half, the curler bouncing just wide of the right-hand post.

That didn't last long; Big Sam arrives bellowing into the technical area, having seen his side fall behind early in the game.

A training ground corner routine comes up trumps as Glenn Whelan plays it to JONATHAN WALTERS on the edge of the area, the Irishman pulling off a fantastic half-volley as the ball comes across his body. The shot is low and true, beating Jaaskelainen to arrow inside the near post. Great goal.
12' RISKY BUSINESS
The crowd gasp as Begovic takes his time in clearing Ryan Shawcross' backpass, the keeper's kick only just missing the onrushing Kevin Nolan. Had that hit the Hammers skipper it would've surely hit the back of the net.

A Stoke special is served up as Asmir Begovic's long kick is headed on by Steven N'Zonzi and Crouch leaps to nod it goalwards. In the end the effort lacks power and makes an easy catch for Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Sam Allardyce has revealed a January interest in signing Shanghai Shenhua striker Nicolas Anelka, who previously played under Big Sam at Bolton. The now 33-year-old striker was a big success in that spell, one of many spent at several different Premier League clubs, and undoubtedly retains the talent to make his mark at the highest level. His current £250,000 per week two-year contract could prove a stumbling block, however.
