Sunderland vs. West Bromwich Albion
Minute Commentary
90' FT: SUNDERLAND 2 WEST BROM 4
West Brom run out comfortable and deserved winners at the Stadium of Light to record their fourth successive victory in the top flight for the first time in 32 years. It was all too easy for the visitors in the first half and they took a two-goal lead into the interval courtesy of goals from Zoltan Gera and Shane Long. Gera's goal, on 23 minutes, was a stunning left-foot strike, while Long's in stoppage time could hardly have been more different, a two-yard tap-in after the hapless Simon Miognolet spilled an innocuous through-ball from Chris Brunt. Martin O'Neill rang the changes at the break and his side responded to some degree. They pulled a goal back via a deflected free-kick by Craig Gardner, though Boaz Myhill really should have done better. West Brom re-established their two-goal cushion when Liam Ridgewell won a soft penalty after a tackle by Adam Johnson and substitute Romelu Lukaku netted from the spot. The Black Cats gave themselves late hope with a close-range effort from Stephane Sessegnon but despite late pressure the Baggies held on and added a fourth in the final minute of stoppage time from Marc-Antoine Fortune. Victory takes Steve Clarke's side into third above Chelsea, who play Manchester City at Stamford Bridge tomorrow.
90' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 2 WEST BROM 4
West Brom seal their victory with a breakaway goal from Fortune, Lukaku supplying the assist.
90' OFF THE POST
At the other end, Lukaku's thumping strike comes back off the post.
90' PUSHING FOR A LEVELLER
Sunderland almost snatch an equaliser, but Myhill makes a diving save to keep out Cuellar's header.
90' WEST BROM SUBSTITUTION
Gabriel Tamas replaces James Morrison for the visitors.
90' WEST BROM BOOKING
Liam Ridgewell is booked for a foul on Stephane Sessegnon.
88' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 2 WEST BROM 3
Sunderland score again. Myhill makes a super save to deny O'Shea from a left-wing corner, but Sessegnon smashes the rebound into the roof of the net.
87' LUKAKU THREATEN AGAIN
Lukaku is first to a ball forward from Ridgewell, rounds Mignolet and is just unable to find the gaping net from a narrow angle.
85' THE HISTORY BOYS
If West Brom secure maximum points today it will be the first time they have won four successive games in the top flight since October 1980.
83' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It was a soft penalty. Ridgewell felt the merest of contacts from Adam Johnson in the box and went over very easily. Having said that, it was a foolish tackle by the winger, who had no hope of winning the ball.
81' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 1 WEST BROM 3
Liam Ridgewell goes down in the box and West Brom have a penalty. Lukaku scores from the spot.
77' SESSEGNON SHOT DEFLECTED
Suddenly Sunderland believe they can snatch something from this game and Sessegnon sees a shot deflected wide with Myhill scrambling across his goal.
75' MORE ON THAT GOAL
That's the lifeline the home fans craved. Gardner's free-kick came off the head of Fortune in the wall and caught out the leaden-footed Myhill, who could only palm the ball into the goal.
74' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 1 WEST BROM 2
Craig Gardner pulls one back for Sunderland.
73' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Sunderland make their final change, as Louis Saha replaces Jack Colback.
71' WEST BROM SUBSTITUTIONS
That's Odemwingie's last taste of the action. He and Shane Long make way for Lukaku and Fortune in a double switch by the visitors.
69' SUPER STRIKE FROM ODEMWINGIE
Odemwingie takes the ball inside Danny Rose and strikes a sizzling shot from 25 yards which was a whisker wide of the post.
67' CUELLAR STRUGGLING
Sunderland centre-back Carlos Cuellar is in some discomfort with what appears to be a rib injury. The former Villa man is going to soldier on, however.
65' McCLEAN A TIRELESS WORKER
McClean has been a willing worker for Sunderland since coming on at the break. He sees one shot deflected well wide and then heads well over from a corner.
62' NEARLY A THIRD
Brunt collects a pass from Odemwingie on the left side of the area and fizzes a cross-shot across the face of goal, with Long only a foot or so away from being able to apply the finishing touch.
59' SEEING A LOT OF THE BALL
Sunderland are dominating possession in this second half, but it's a familiar story – they are not doing enough with it.
56' FLETCHER HEADS OVER
Larsson delivers a cross from the right, but Fletcher heads comfortably over the crossbar.
55' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
Gardner scythes down Liam Ridgewell and can count himself somewhat lucky to only collect a yellow card for what was a nasty late tackle.
53' MYHILL VERY UNSTEADY
Johnson lets fly with a swerving shot from distance that dips in front of Myhill and the goalkeeper makes another unconvincing save to spoon the ball away.
51' MIGNOLET PARTLY REDEEMS HIMSELF
Long has a glorious chance to add a third for West Brom, but Mignolet races off his line to make a fine save to deny the Republic of Ireland forward, who had got clean through after collecting a pass from Brunt.
48' SHORT OF SUPPORT
Craig Gardner powers his way through two West Brom tackles, but having found space inside the area he only has Sessegnon to look for and the visitors' defence crowds him out.
47' BOLD MOVE FROM O'NEILL
It's an interesting and attacking move from Martin O'Neill, who has moved Bardsley to centre-back, Larsson to right-back and brought McClean on to try and breathe some attacking life into his ailing side.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
West Brom get the second half under way. James McClean has replaced John O'Shea at the break for the home side.
45' HT: SUNDERLAND 0 WEST BROM 2
West Brom lead at the break and the in-form Baggies deserve their advantage. The opening goal came on the half-hour through a stunning 20-yard left-foot strike from Zoltan Gera, the second through a Shane Long tap-in after a blunder of monumental proportions from Simon Mignolet. Both sides have had other chances, the best probably falling to Claudio Yacob, who headed wide from five yards following a Chris Brunt corner. For Sunderland, John O'Shea shot just wide and Stephane Sessegnon has twice tested Boaz Myhill, firstly with a right-foot volley and then with a flicked header. On both occasions the West Brom stopper managed to keep his goal intact, but neither save will have filled the visiting fans with confidence and Sunderland will certainly feel they can find a way through in the second half.
45' MYHILL TESTED AGAIN
A curling free-kick from Gardner forces another awkward save from Myhill.
44' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 0 WEST BROM 2
Shane Long nets a second for West Brom after an absolute howler by Simon Mignolet, who spilled an innocuous through-ball from Brunt at the feet of the visitors' striker.
42' SESSEGNON SHOT ON TARGET
Sessegnon does superbly to keep the ball in down the left and cut in on goal before getting another shot on target which Myhill saves comfortably after a deflection.
40' WEST BROM BOOKING
James Morrison is rightly booked for a rash challenge on Danny Rose, who was about to launch a raid down the left.
37' SOLID STARTERS
West Brom are the only team yet to concede a goal in the opening 30 minutes of a Premier League game this season. They have maintained that record today.
34' SUNDERLAND SUBSTITUTION
Cattermole needs treatment on an injury to his knee and will have to go off. Craig Gardner comes on in his place.
33' O'SHEA GOES CLOSE
Sunderland go close to levelling almost immediately. Olsson makes a mess of clearing a cross from the left and O'Shea curls a 14-yard shot just wide of the post.
31' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a fabulous goal from the Hungarian. He collected a short pass inside and lashed a swerving shot from the left edge of the area that found the top corner, despite Mignolet getting a hand to it.
30' GOAL: SUNDERLAND 0 WEST BROM 1
Zoltan Gera gives West Brom the lead with a stunner.
29' LONG A LITTLE HARD DONE BY
Having seen that O'Shea incident several times, I think Mike Dean got it half right. Long threw himself to the ground, but only after contact by the defender, the sort of thing you see every weekend from forwards, especially when they are looking to win a penalty. It certainly wasn't a second booking for the Sunderland man, but to say the striker dived is rather harsh.
27' MYHILL SAVE
Larsson drops a lovely free-kick from the right into the West Brom box. Sessegnon flicks a header goalwards and again the flat-footed Myhill makes rather a meal of the save.
24' STRUGGLING FOR FORM
Sunderland's win at Fulham last weekend was only their second success in the last 19 Premier League games.
22' O'SHEA ESCAPES A RED CARD
John O'Shea is a very worried man after Shane Long throws himself over a lunging tackle. The defender thought he had been sent off, but in fact Mike Dean has produced a yellow card for diving against the Baggies forward.
19' BLACK CATS COUNTER
Back come Sunderland. Johnson dinks the ball inside to Sessegnon and he shows some great trickery before picking out an awkward volley. Myhill lets it slip from his grasp and is mightily relieved to see the effort squirm wide of the post.
16' GLORIOUS CHANCE
A superb corner from Brunt picks out the unmarked Yacob at the far post, but the midfielder shows why he has failed to score this season by making a right hash of the header from inside the six-yard box.
14' GENEROUS REFEREE
Lee Cattermole is a lucky lad. He could have been booked for either of two foul tackles on West Brom players but escapes with just a free-kick being awarded against him.
12' FLETCHER WIDE OF THE MARK
Bardsley delivers a cross from the right that is just a fraction too high for Fletcher and the Sunderland leading scorer is unable to direct his header on target.
10' SUNDERLAND BOOKING
John O'Shea is booked for hauling back Shane Long and can have no complaints even this early on.
9' ODEMWINGIE SHOT
Odemwingie is allowed the space to advance down the middle of the pitch. His 25-yard strike deflects off a Sunderland defender which takes all the sting out of the attempt and makes it easy for Mignolet to gather.
8' IMPROVED SHOWING
Sunderland have already made a much better start this time around against West Brom than when the sides last met at the Stadium of Light. On that occasion they were 2-0 down inside five minutes.
6' SHOT ON TARGET
Sessegnon breaks down the centre and feeds Johnson down the left. The former Manchester City winger cuts inside on to his right foot and tries a low shot that is on target, but easy for Myhill to save.
5' OR A DRAB GOALLESS DRAW?
Sunderland have scored only three goals at home in the Premier League this season, the worst record in the division.
3' A HIGH-SCORING ENCOUNTER?
If past form is anything to go by, there should be goals today. Only one of the last seven league meetings between these two sides has failed to produce at least three goals. Not sure I agree with that due to the difficulty Sunderland have had finding the net this season.
2' WHERE ARE YOU, LET'S BE HAVING YOU
I don't know if it is the early kick-off, the fact the match is on telly, or that West Brom are not the most attractive opposition. Whatever the reason, there were loads of empty seats when the match kicked off.
1' HERE WE GO
Sunderland kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' STARTING LINE-UPS

0' PREVIEW
West Bromwich Albion have the chance to leapfrog Chelsea into third with victory at Sunderland in Saturday's early kick-off in the Premier League, thereby dealing a second blow in a week to the men from Stamford Bridge. The Baggies' scarcely believable start scaled new heights last week when they saw off the reigning European champions at The Hawthorns, adding Chelsea to a list of notable 2012-13 scalps that already included Liverpool and Everton. Manager Steve Clarke had better watch out, if he carries on like this he will be talked about alongside Pep Guardiola as the front-runners for the Chelsea job when Rafael Benitez is asked to move aside at the Bridge at the end of the season, or before, depending on results. While West Brom have been without doubt the surprise package in the top flight, Sunderland have struggled mightily. One word summed up the Black Cats' win at Fulham last weekend: relief. Martin O'Neill used it in his post-match press conference and it was a timely three points, even if it did come against ten men. It was only the second time this season that the Wearsiders had managed more than one goal in a game and they simply have to push on from here. With bottom club QPR to follow at home on Tuesday and a trip to Norwich after that, this is the ideal time for O'Neill's side to string a few results together which would haul them away from the wrong end of the table. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Steven Fletcher is the only Sunderland player with more than one Premier League goal to his name this season, having netted six of the nine goals they have scored. Stephane Sessegnon scored a cracker at Fulham last weekend, his first goal of the campaign in any competition in what was his 14th appearance. The Black Cats will be hoping that confidence-booster helps the Benin-born player rediscover the form that saw him score eight goals for them last season. The enigmatic Peter Odemwingie, who scored twice against Sunderland the last time these two sides met, has three goals in his last three games for West Brom, worth four points to his side. Sunderland must beware the Nigerian, but should also keep an eye on the unselfish Shane Long who, like Odemwingie, has four league goals to his name and has weighed in with five assists.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Sunderland have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 56 wins to 46 by West Brom and 40 games being drawn. Sunderland have recorded 38 victories on Wearside, with West Brom winning on 11 occasions and a further 22 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on Oct.1 ended in a 2-2 draw. West Brom took a two-goal lead with two goals inside the opening five minutes from James Morrison and Shane Long, but Sunderland replied with two goals of their own inside two minutes through Nicklas Bendtner (24 mins) and Ahmed Elmohamady (26). The return at The Hawthorns on Feb.25 was a far more one-sided affair, West Brom winning 4-0 with two goals from Peter Odemwingie (3 and 48 mins) and one each for James Morrison (41) and Keith Andrews (90). West Brom are unbeaten in their last five matches with Sunderland since being thumped 4-0 at the Stadium of Light in December 2008.
0' FORM GUIDE
Sunderland are 15th, with 12 points from 11 games, and have a game in hand, which is at home against Reading on December 11. Sunderland's win at Fulham last weekend was only their second of the season in the league and came after a six-game winless run featuring four defeats. Their only other Premier League success was a 1-0 home win over Wigan on Sep.29. West Brom are in fourth place with 23 points from 12 games. They are five points behind leaders Manchester City, but four points better off than Arsenal, and have six more points than Spurs and eight more than Liverpool. West Brom have only picked up five points away from home, compared to the 18 they have managed at the Hawthorns. That lone road success was in their last away game, a 2-1 win at Wigan on Nov.10. Steve Clarke's side are looking for looking for a fourth straight victory.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Sunderland have Craig Gardner available after suspension, but whether the midfielder or stand-in full-back earns an instant recall after the Black Cats' victory without him last week remains to be seen. Manager Martin O'Neill played his cards close to his chest this week, saying one or two of his players had minor ailments, but refusing to reveal either their identities or the extent of their injuries. West Brom will again be without goalkeeper Ben Foster because of a groin problem, while midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu is also missing after damaging a hamstring against Chelsea. But central defender Gareth McAuley is fit again after a hamstring strain and Romelu Lukaku could return, the on-loan striker having not been allowed to play against his parent club last week.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mike Dean, who has been a FIFA official since 2002. The Cheshire-based referee has shown 28 yellow cards in his nine Premier League games this season and sent off just one player, Arsenal's Jack Wilshere at Manchester United. He dismissed five players last season, two from Sunderland in the same match at Newcastle, with Stephane Sessegnon and Lee Cattermole both being given their marching orders in a 1-1 draw. Dean has a reputation for being strict on misdemeanours in the penalty area and awarded more spot kicks last campaign than any other top-flight official. His assistants today are Jake Collin and Simon Long, while Anthony Taylor is the fourth official.
