90' BIG GUNS FAIL TO FIRE
Both sides played poorly as Chelsea and Manchester City ground out a 0-0 bore draw at Stamford Bridge. Rafael Benitez's first game as manager saw his charges play with his trademark tepid style, although Man City weren't much better. Sergio Aguero spurned the only two clear chances of the first half, seeing an effort well blocked by Cesar Azpilicueta and then heading inexplicably straight at Petr Cech when in acres of space to convert Aleksandar Kolarov's 42nd-minute cross. Things improved slightly after the break, with David Luiz twice going close with headers from Juan Mata corners , but both defences performed markedly better than their attacking counterparts to keep the game goalless. On this evidence both clubs need to buck their ideas up as top of the table Manchester United look on with glee.

Chelsea break at speed after Oriol Romeu's crunching tackle relieves Barry of the ball in the middle of the park. The former Barcelona midfielder spreads it to Moses on the right, the youngster speeding forward and then mishitting his attempted cross out for a goal kick.

Petr Cech gets a rare test as Yaya Toure lets rip with a venomous drive. The Chelsea keeper spills it but manages to fall on the ball before Dzeko can capitalise.

Kolarov produces a magnificent cross that hangs up to the back post. You would expect Edin Dzeko to be sticking that in the net, but the Bosnian delays his run and in the end can't reach it.
49' COLE DENIED
Chelsea come up with their best move of the game so far as Juan Mata finds Ashley Cole in the channel with a zipped pass. Cole goes for goal from just inside the box, Kompany stepping into it to deflect the ball out for a corner.

The sides are back out and the second half is underway, with neither manager having seen fit to make any half time changes.
45' DAMP SQUIB
Despite the pedigree of the sides contesting this match, things have entirely failed to set alight at Stamford Bridge. With the rain tipping down, both teams look like they'd rather be tucked up at home with a hot mug of cocoa. Manchester City have been the better side, but that isn't saying much. The only clear opportunities of the half both fell to Sergio Aguero; first the Argentine was denied by a superb Cesar Azpilicueta block, and later he headed straight at Petr Cech when Aleksandar Kolarov's cross found the striker in acres of space. Rafael Benitez has much to do on this showing; it will be interesting to see whether the unpopular gaffer can gee up his flagging side in the dressing room.

The ref blows for half time with the game at a dull stalemate.
45' A MAN TRANSFORMED
Fernando Torres has suddenly come to life in the last few minutes, perhaps inspired by ironic cheers directed his way throughout the half. One turn on the halfway line takes the £50m striker past Nastasic, but Vincent Kompany is on hand to make a vital tackle.
42' TOO MUCH TIME
Kolarov's cross finds Sergio Aguero in acres of space, but the striker inexplicably rushes his header and sends it straight at the grateful Cech.
39' MORE POWER REQUIRED
David Luiz tries a highly ambitious effort from a 30-yard free kick, the shot failing to carry anywhere near enough power to beat Joe Hart.
38' DOWNWARD HEADER
Gareth Barry nods down a Chelsea clearance to Yaya Toure, who in turns knocks it to Milner. The midfielder bends a cross into the box where Matija Nastasic's header bounces down off the ground and into Hart's arms.
36' TIMID TORRES
The crowd groan as Torres makes a half-hearted attempt to win Branislav Ivanovic's high ball. The much-maligned striker could be forgiven for not getting the goals if he was only working hard.

Surely no-one could have predicted just how tepid this game has been. It's not that the two heavyweights are cancelling each other out, just that neither are doing anything of note.
30' CHELSEA SHOW SOMETHING
Chelsea enjoy an improved spell as they twice lob the ball into the Man City area. Each time Joe Hart is alert to the danger.
27' PLAYSTATION TACTICS
David Luiz canters upfield without a thought and is caught out as Sergio Aguero is played in behind him. The Argentine looks set to score until Azpilicueta pops up with a magnificent block.
24' TOUGH TACKLE
Cesar Azpilicueta finds Cole in space with a crossfield ball, whereupon the full back is cleaned out by a strong but completely fair Zabaleta sliding tackle.

Pablo Zabaleta flies up the right wing and sends in an inviting cross that David Silva heads comfortably over the crossbar.
20' CHANCE GOES BEGGING
James Milner turns inside John Obi Mikel 20 yards out and sights a chance to go for goal, only to watch the ball roll away as the England midfielder takes a heavy touch.
17' GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
A planned concert of voices rise in support of the sacked Roberto di Matteo as Chelsea fans around the ground stand and applaud the man who brought them the Champions League. Roman Abramovich is present but visibly couldn't care less.

Juan Mata sends a pass infield to Fernando Torres, who goes to set up Oscar but instead completely misses the ball. No magic touch from Benitez just yet then.
12' WISDOM OF EXPERIENCE
David Silva conjures a yard of space on the edge of the area and dinks a ball into Edin Dzeko. Ashley Cole uses all his experience to ease the bigger man off the ball and clear the danger.
9' CITY ON TOP
Slowly but surely the champions are imposing themselves on this game, with Chelsea now struggling to get hold of the ball. City haven't been able to make the breakthrough as yet, with one cross from Aleksandar Kolarov falling straight into the arms of Petr Cech.

The game is proceeding at a slovenly pace, with both sides seemingly content to knock the ball around and probe for weaknesses.
3' SPORTING PLAY
Following an impressive opening few minutes for Chelsea, Ramires goes down in a heap as Gareth Barry puts in a hefty challenge. David Silva sportingly sticks the ball out of play so the Brazilian can receive treatment.
1' KICK OFF
Chris Foy gets this afternoon's Barclays Premier League heavyweight clash underway following a few rousing choruses of 'there's only one di Matteo' and loud boos as Chelsea's new manager emerges from the tunnel. In between there's a more heartening minute's applause for the late Dave Sexton, the Blues' FA Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup winning manager. Vincent Kompany has been passed fit to start the game.
0' JUDGEMENT RESERVED
The pre-match atmosphere is a little subdued here at Stamford Bridge. The crowd will want to see instant improvements if they're to accept Rafa Benitez. Man City have concerns too as Vincent Kompany receives treatment after pulling up in the warm-up.
0' LINE-UPS ANNOUNCED
Rafael Benitez hasn't sprung many surprises with his first Chelsea line-up; Fernando Torres is retained and Branislav Ivanovic comes in for Gary Cahill. Roberto Mancini has selected Aleksandar Kolarov and Edin Dzeko, with Maicon and Carlos Tevez dropping to the bench. James Milner also gets a start.

Vincent Kompany faces a battle to recover from a knee problem in time to play, while Gael Clichy and Mario Balotelli are available after recovering from ankle and back injuries respectively.

0' ONE TO WATCH
Now his favourite boss is on board we could see something of the old Fernando Torres. The Spaniard has been unrecognisable recently from the tyro who scored wonderful goals for fun at Benitez's Liverpool, and the appointment of his mentor appears made with the lacklustre Torres' form in mind. If things don't improve for him now the exit door will surely beckon come summer.
0' MANCINI BITES BACK
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has responded spikily to criticism from his opposite number at Real Madrid Jose Mourinho, who of course managed Inter Milan after the Italian, with only the brief reign of a certain Rafael Benitez separating the two. Mancini said: “Mourinho is not my chairman. What Mourinho said for me is not interesting. For me, it is not important”. No love lost there.
0' LEGENDS LEAVING
Rafa's only been in the job a few days, but already he's signalled the end for two of Chelsea's finest ever players. According to the Spaniard, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, who are both in the final year of their contracts, will be allowed to leave at the end of the season. There won't be any shortage of takers for the decorated pair.
0' REF WATCH
This should be a hard-fought affair, and it falls to Chris Foy to keep the peace among the two heavyweights. Mr Foy has been lenient this season, handing out an average of only 1.67 bookings per game, so will hopefully be able to keep 22 players on the pitch and the contest an even one.
0' CHELSEA V MAN CITY
It's all about Rafael Benitez this week. Once again Chelsea have a new manager and once again the sacking of the previous incumbent is widely condemned by the football community. They might just do well to remember that the last time this happened Roberto di Matteo took over and Chelsea won the Champions League. One large difference of course is that under current terms Benitez is here for just six months, theoretically keeping the managerial seat warm until the end of season arrival of Josep Guardiola. The Blues may have been in poor form recently but haven't exactly been cut adrift in the Barclays Premier League, lying only four points behind today's opponents, league leaders Manchester City. Roberto Mancini's men have come in for some criticism themselves recently but head to Stamford Bridge in some decent league form. 90 minutes of pure Premier League entertainment is on its way.
