Southampton vs. Newcastle United
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME REPORT
Southampton came out 2-0 winners in a game they should have won by many more. Gaston Ramirez set up Adam Lallana before the tricky Uruguayan grabbed one for himself. After a good start, Newcastle were nearly behind when Rickie Lambert rattled the bar with a magnificent free kick. Two minutes after that Southampton went ahead thanks to youth academy product Adam Lallana. Into the second period and the hosts went 2-0 up thanks to another easy finish, this time from Gaston Ramirez. Jason Puncheon hit the post before Jose Fonte planted a header onto the bar. The hosts then had a goal chopped off in the 89th minute after Jay Rodriguez was deemed to be offside despite being in line with the last defender. A thoroughly deserved win for the Saints who move out of the bottom three. Newcastle have work to do. Full time and it's 2-0 to Southampton.
90' FULL TIME
Martin Atkinson blows his whistle and the game is over.
90' DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION
James Perch comes on for Newcastle in place of Steven Taylor while Jos Hooiveld replaces youngster Luke Shaw for Southampton.
89' OFFSIDE?
Add a disallowed goal to the three efforts that have hit the woodwork now. Jay Rodriguez looks in line with the last defender but the linesman immeidately raises his flag as he's sent through.
88' AMBITIOUS
Cheik Tiote tries to recreate his stunner against Arsenal 21 months ago, but he volleys the ball well wide from 40 yards.
86' STILL GOING
Nigel Adkins' players have got fire in their bellies and are attacking right until the very end. This time Adam Lallana runs down on goal and tries to be Tim Krul but the goalkeeper denies him with his legs.
84' NO IDEAS
Alan Pardew's men appear to have run out of ideas. They're not creating anything now and look to be just rolling over and accepting defeat.
81' UNBELIEVABLE
Southampton hit the woodwork for a third time. This time it's defender Jose Fonte who heads Jason Puncheon's corner onto the bar.
80' MORE POSSESSION
The possession stats show Newcastle have had more in the second half, but the lack of chemistry between Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse means they haven't converted any chances today.
78' SUBSTITUTION
A second sub for Southampton in as many minutes. This time it's goalscorer and creator Gaston Ramirez who exits. Steven Davis comes on in his place.
76' SUBSTITUTION
£7m signing Jay Rodriguez comes on in place of Rickie Lambert who goes off to a standing ovation.
75' WAKING UP
Newcastle finally seem to be getting in to gear, only 75 minutes too late. They've had a great spell of possession in the last ten minutes and have attacked Southampton's goal.
73' GREAT SAVE
Paulo Gazzaniga makes a wonderful save to keep the two goal lead intact. Danny Simpson provided the cross and it was Davide Santon's header that was going in.
70' OFF THE POST
The hosts hit the post for the second time and this time it's through Jason Puncheon from a very acute angle. He'd have done well had he squeezed it in from there.
68' JUST OVER
Cheik Tiote curls a shot over the bar after he's reluctant to use his left foot and waits to get the ball on his right, but in doing so it means he has to get it over a defender as well as the 'keeper.
67' SUBSTITUTION
Vurnon Anita exits the field of play and Sylvain Marveaux comes on in his place.
65' PENALTY APPEAL
Gaston Ramirez goes down in the box and he and the fans demand a penalty. The referee is not having any of it and tells him to get up.
63' UNLUCKY
It never goes your way when you're losing. The Newcastle players are slipping all over when trying to control the ball in this horrible weather.
60' GOOOAAALLL!!!
As I say that the hosts double thier lead. Jason Puncheon smashes the ball across goal and Tim Krul spills it after he had it in his grasps. GASTON RAMIREZ is waiting and pounces to prod home the second.
59' GOOD SPELL
The visiting side have looked better after Alan Pardew's half-time team talk. They've created more opportunities than in the first half, but Southampton look very dangerous on the counter.
57' SCRAMBLE
The hosts counter brilliantly with Gaston Ramirez as he bears down on goal and plays the ball out to Jason Puncheon who gives it to Adam Lallana. He sees his effort saved and Puncheon skies the rebound when he should hit the target.
55' BEST CHANCE SO FAR
A long ball upfield sends Vurnon Anita through but the Dutchman can't get the ball out of his feet and sends his effort straight at Gazzaniga when one-on-one.
53' GOOD HEADER
Vurnon Anita delivers a peach of a corner onto Demba Ba's head and the big man flicks it goalwards but Paulo Gazzaniga catches comfortably.
52' DOWN
Rickie Lambert is on the floor. He doesn't look to be too bad but the physio is on to deal with him.
49' POOR FINAL BALL
Jason Puncheon does excellently well to beat a couple of players down his right-hand flank but a poor final ball sees Tim Krul collect comfortably.
47' PROMISING
Jonas Gutierrez crosses in a lovely ball to the far post and Sammy Ameobi controls well and wins a throw deep in the hosts' half. Alan Pardew will be hoping the Argentine will send plenty more of those in.
46' OFF WE GO
Newcastle restart the action and Sammy Ameobi enters the fray in place of Shane Ferguson.
45' HALF TIME REPORT
Southampton were deserving of their lead as they went into the break 1-0 up thanks to the easiest of finishes from Adam Lallana. The first ten minutes saw Newcastle create the better openings, mainly through Demba Ba. However, Southampton got into their stride after this and harrassed Newcastle's goal. Gaston Ramirez came close with a free kick and Rickie Lambert came even closer with a set-piece of his own - his 25-yard effort smashed off the upright. The Saints finally got their lead through Lallana when Ramirez squared after Tim Krul came slightly off his line. They nearly doubled their advantage through Morgan Schneiderlin but Steven Taylor thwarted him. Half time and Southampton are one up.
45' HALF TIME
Martin Atkinson blows his whistle and signals the end of the first half.
45' CONTINUOUS ATTACKING
Southampton aren't giving Newcastle a moment to rest as they bombard the box with crosses. This time it's Gaston Ramirez who heads over.
44' WAY OVER
Rickie Lambert lines up with Gaston Ramirez behind the ball as Southampton have a free kick way back in Newcastle's half. Lambert does go for goal but his effort is miles over the bar.
42' TEASING
Southampton are toying with their opposition, passing it about in neat triangles to frustrate the Magpies. It's working too as Mike Williamson goes into the book for a daft challenge.
39' NOT THE SAME TEAM
Newcastle aren't a shadow of last season's side. And it's not surprising considering they have no Cabaye, Ben Arfa or Coloccini today.
37' FANTASTIC PLAY
Southampton nearly double their lead after great work from Jason Puncheon. The winger plays the ball into Morgan Schneiderlin's path and he fires his shot with venom but a magnificent block from Steven Taylor diverts the ball over.
35' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Southampton take the lead and it's ADAM LALLANA who taps into the semi-guarded net. Tim Krul comes out of his net and unselfishly Gaston Ramirez squares to Lallana who taps home.
33' OFF THE WOODWORK
A free kick in an almost identical position to Ramirez's cannons back off of the cross-section. It was a brilliant swerving effort from Rickie Lambert.
32' MARVELLOUS SAVE
Southampton counter with sharpness and Rickie Lambert cuts the ball back to Jason Puncheon who fires towards goal but Tim Krul blocks brilliantly. Despite his great saves today he's not kept a single clean sheet this season.
31' OFFSIDE
Demba Ba is caught offside as he turns to get into the Southampton penalty box. It has to be said it was a superb pass from Vurnon Anita that picked Ba out.
28' SOFT HEADER
A corner comes in from Lallana which is played back in by Nathaniel Clyne. Rickie Lambert flicks the ball onto Gaston Ramirez who nods just wide of Tim Krul's post. Both sides are having their fair share of attacks.
26' SLIPPY
There's been heavy rainfall at St Mary's this afternoon and the players are sliding in and going quite a way before getting up. The ball isn't moving very smoothly either causing players to concentrate extra hard.
24' FREE KICK
Southampton have a set-piece in a very hazardous area 25-yards out and Gaston Ramirez bends it over the wall. It's heading for the bottom corner but Tim Krul makes a diving save to keep the scores at 0-0.
23' BOOKING
Jose Fonte goes into the notebook after a belated whistle. Papiss Cisse goes down holding his ankle but Martin Atkinson deems it worthy of just a booking.
21' MENACING
Jonas Gutierrez whips over a dangerous cross which bounces around in the area. Jose Fonte improvises though and heads clear with a diving header to give Newcastle a corner.
19' TERRIBLE PASS
Cheik Tiote nearly hands Southampton the lead as his under hit back pass forces Tim Krul to race off of his line to clear from Rickie Lambert's feet. The 'keeper had an amazing starting position in all fairness.
17' GETTING BETTER
The hosts are looking more composed now and Jason Puncheon looks the most dangerous player in the side. He plays over a stunning cross but it evades everyone and bounces out for a goal kick.
15' FORTUNATE
Paulo Gazzaniga nearly gifts Papiss Cisse a goal as he dawdles before clearing, but his eventual clearance hits the Senegalese striker and Gazzaniga smothers the ball at the second time of asking.
13' TIGHT ANGLE
Jason Puncheon goes around one defender and arrows a fierce shot at Tim Krul but the 'keeper deals with it easily.
11' AGGRIEVED
Boos ring around the ground as Gaston Ramirez goes down on the edge of the box but referee Martin Atkinson waves for the advantage and their attack comes to nothing.
9' CONTROLLING
After the first nine minutes Newcastle look much the better team - they're tackling hard at the back and coming forward with real intent.
7' SHOULD DO BETTER
Nathaniel Clyne's daisy cutter is heading well wide before Adam Lallana gets a touch on it but directs wide of the other post when he should hit the target.
5' CLOSE
Demba Ba heads just wide of Gazzaniga's left-hand post after a lofted cross from Shane Ferguson.
3' CLAIMED WELL
Paulo Gazzaniga shows good hands in the air to collect Jonas Gutierrez's cross. The 'keeper will be hoping to have a better game than last time at St Mary's when his error cost his side all three points.
2' EARLY PRESSURE
The hosts win an early corner but no one can connect after Adam Lallana's curling delivery.
1' WE'RE OFF

0' PREVIEW
Southampton head into this fixture knowing a win will take them out of the relegation zone for the first time since October 7. Newcastle go into this afternoon's game in poor form and looking for their first away win of the season in all competitions. It will be a fixture both teams want to win – Alan Pardew visits St Mary's for the first time since his dismissal there 27 months ago.
0' NOT A GOOD START
With a third of the season already played, the bottom three is not where Southampton will have wanted to be, but last week's 3-1 away victory may be just what the South Coast side needed to kick-start their season. However, one defeat in five at home in all competitions is a run the hosts would like to extend to six today.
0' COMPARISON
The fixture that fell on this weekend last season saw Newcastle grab a brave and hard-fought draw at Old Trafford to propel them up to fourth on 26 points. This term they have 14 points and sit in 14th, not where they expected to be given last season's heroics. Any managerial changes Mike Ashley would like to make though would be halted or would cost the club dearly, with Pardew only two months into his astonishingly long eight-year contract.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
The last two times these met was six years ago in the FA Cup fifth round when Newcastle prevailed 1-0 to advance to the next stage. These two haven't met in the league since January 2005, in the season Southampton were relegated. Something that the hosts will like the sound of is they have only lost once at home to Newcastle in the league since 1972 – a 2-1 defeat in Southampton's previous Premier League season.
0' THE REFEREE
Martin Atkinson will take charge of the game today. A Premier League referee since 2005, the West Yorkshire-based official is looking over his 17th game of the season this afternoon. Interestingly enough, he has shown only one red card this season, which was shown to Cheick Tiote in the only game he has officiated in which Newcastle were the visitors.
