Aston Villa vs. Reading
Minute Commentary
90' FT: ASTON VILLA 1 READING 0
Villa record only their second home win of the season, but it's a priceless one as it lifts them out of the relegation zone. The all-important goal came ten minutes from time from Christian Benteke, who justified Paul Lambert's decision to persevere with him in preference to Darren Bent by heading home a Barry Bannan corner. In truth, it was a nervy affair played between two sides lacking in confidence and short of ideas going forward. Corners always looked like being one of the likelier routes to maximum points and so it proved. Adam Le Fondre twice went close for Reading in the first half and Benteke forced one save out of Adam Federici and set up another glorious opening, wasted by Andreas Weimann. In the second half, set-pieces again were to the fore, with Le Fondre somehow managing to miss the target from inside the six-yard box. It was to prove a costly miss for the Royals.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be three minutes of added time.
88' LAST CHANCE SALOON
There has been a goal in the final minute of the last four meetings between these clubs in all competitions. It's not over yet.
85' HEADER ON TARGET
Cummings crosses from the right and Hunt rises well, but his header is straight at the goalkeeper.
84' READING SUBSTITUTION
Garath McCleary takes the place of Hal Robson-Kanu as the visitors go looking for an equaliser.
82' MORE ON THAT GOAL
The goal came from a left-wing corner by Bannan. Benteke leapt early and rose above Morrison, heading down and goalwards past a ruck of bodies in front of the goalkeeper.
81' GOAL: VILLA 1 READING 0
Christian Benteke gives Villa the lead.
80' READING SUBSTITUTION
Jason Roberts' night is done. He makes way for Noel Hunt.
78' GOALS IN SHORT SUPPLY
It's still goalless in an equally thrilling match between fellow strugglers Sunderland and QPR at the Stadium of Light, by the way, just in case you thought you were missing something.
77' TAME HEADER FROM IRELAND
Ireland heads goalwards from Bannan's cross, but he was so far out he was never going to beat the goalkeeper from there. Only Carlton Palmer scores headers from that range. If you don't know who he was, ask your grandad, or one of your mates on Facebook.
74' TRIVIA ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who scored both Reading's goals when they registered their only league victory over Villa in February 2007. It was Steve Sidwell.
71' TRIVIA QUESTION
Reading's only league victory over Villa came in February 2007, but who scored both their goals in the 2-0 win that day? Answer in a few minutes.
69' BOGEY CLUB FOR ROBERTS
Jason Roberts, who started for Reading tonight, has failed to score in 12 previous appearances against Villa. He's well on his way to unlucky 13.
68' VILLA SUBSTITUTIONS
Villa make a double switch, with Stephen Ireland and Marc Albrighton coming on for Brett Holman and Andreas Weimann.
67' SAVE BY GUZAN
Roberts cuts in from the left past Clark and tries his luck from a narrow angle, but Guzan saves easily with his legs.
64' VILLA BOOKING
Clark is the first man in the book, for a callous bodycheck on Roberts near the touchline. He can have no complaints.
62' IT'S THE THING WITH THE NET ON IT
Another Villa corner delivered by Bannan, another chance. Clark arrives unmarked only six yards out, but his angled header goes wide of the far post. Not as bad as Le Fondre's miss, but it's easy to see why the home side don't score many goals.
60' BAD MISS BY LE FONDRE
Le Fondre could have had a hat-trick tonight. Somehow he heads over from four yards, from a right-wing corner by Shorey. Unmarked as well. What a miss!
57' HOLMAN NOT FAR AWAY
Holman is a whisker away from giving Villa the lead. The Australian Footballer of the Year works his way across the area from the right and his low left-foot drive goes just wide of the upright.
54' DEFLECTED WIDE
Weimann's shot from 20 yards is deflected wide for a Villa corner. Bannan's delivery is superb, but Baker is unable to apply the finishing touch.
52' DULL AS DISHWATER
The first half may have had its moments, but it's been a dreadfully disappointing start to the second half. So dull, in fact, that a trivia question will shortly be on the way.
50' TIMELY BLOCK BY CLARK
McAnuff tries a first-time effort following a cross by Le Fondre from the left, but Clark anticipates superbly and blocks the shot.
48' A YEAR TO FORGET
Villa's total of 24 points in 2012 is the worst return of any club in the Premier League.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Reading get the second half under way.
45' HT: ASTON VILLA 0 READING 0
It's goalless at the break of a very watchable game which both sides will feel they might be leading as they sit in the changing rooms slurping their half-time cuppas. Reading started the better against a nervy home side and Adam Le Fondre was twice unable to force the ball home from close range. Villa though then enjoyed their best spell of the half and created the best chances. Christian Benteke forced Adam Federici into a routine save to his left when a better-placed shot would have given the Reading stopper no chance and Andreas Weimann blasted into the stands from ten yards with a panicky effort when composure was called for. Both teams have looked threatening from set-pieces as well and although neither goalkeeper has been called upon to do anything world class, there is simply no way this match is going to finish goalless.
44' FEEBLE PENALTY CLAIM
Lowton goes down in instalments in an attempt to win a penalty after a challenge from Mariappa. Mr Probert is far too experienced to fall for that one.
42' FIRST GOAL VITAL
Villa have gained just one point from a losing position this season, so even with Reading's leaky defence they could do with scoring first tonight.
38' FINISH SADLY LACKING
Bannan delivers a wicked cross into the Reading area from wide on the right. Clark flicks it on, but Benteke was not alert to the possibilities, otherwise he would have been left with a tap-in at the far post.
36' TAME STRIKE BY BENTEKE
The crowd volume increases as Benteke gets the ball 25 yards from goal, but that expectation is crushed in an instant as he lifts a tame shot into the arms of Federici. That effort had all the venom of a back-pass.
33' NOW BAKER GOES CLOSE
It's Villa's turn to threaten again. Baker jumps over Robson-Kanu at a right-wing corner but cannot direct his header on target.
32' LE FONDRE INCHES AWAY
Cummings drops an excellent cross from the right into the Villa area which skims off the top of Le Fondre's head. Reading's leading scorer pounds his fists into the turf in frustration.
29' WEIMANN BLAZES OVER
The best chance of the match so far is spurned by Villa. Benteke pulls an excellent ball back from the left but Weimann shows no composure and lifts his left-foot shot from ten yards miles over the bar.
27' AMBITIOUS FROM BANNAN
Barry Bannan is never afraid to have a shot. He lets fly from 25 yards but the effort soars over the crossbar and into the crowd behind the goal.
26' VILLA SUBSTITUTION
Stevens' night is done. He limps off, with Eric Lichaj coming on in his place.
23' HOLMAN THE WISE OLD MAN
Villa's oldest outfield player is Brett Holman, who is a 28-year-old veteran. Their average age tonight is 23. You win nothing with kids, remember.
22' STEVENS NEEDS TREATMENT
Enda Stevens has treatment on a leg injury, but looks like he will be able to continue.
20' IT'S STAN TIME
We reach the 19th minute, so there is the customary minute's applause in support of club captain Stiliyan Petrov (number 19) in his fight against leukaemia.
19' BENTEKE DENIED
Back come Villa. Tabb fails to cut out a cross from the right by Holman. Benteke takes one touch to control and with the goal at his mercy shoots too close to Federici, who makes a save low down to his left.
17' READING THREATEN AGAIN
Reading threaten again from Shorey's right-wing corner. After some pinball in the six-yard box Le Fondre is again unable to find the net from close range.
14' MORRISON HEADS WIDE
Reading win the first corner of the match and Morrison heads just wide of the post. Morrison is a real handful at set-pieces. If Reading weren't so lousy at the back, he's one defender you would have in your fantasy football team.
11' ROYALS GO CLOSE
Reading could and perhaps should be in front. Bannan gives the ball to Leigertwood and a cross from the right is first missed by Roberts before Le Fondre fails to hook it home from three yards, admittedly with his back to goal.
9' CHANCE GOES BEGGING
McAnuff feels he should have had a Reading free-kick on the edge of the Villa box, but referee Lee Probert disagrees. The home side break two-on-two down the other end, only for the final pass to be out of the reach of Holman, who would have been left with a tap-in.
7' WIDE OF THE MARK
Reading have the first shot at goal, but Robson-Kanu's snap-shot from wide on the left is a good distance wide of the post.
6' BENT IN ATTENDANCE
Darren Bent is at the ground tonight, clutching his mobile phone to his chest. You can do your Christmas shopping from the safety of the main stand these days. Oh, the wonders of modern technology.
3' PASS MASTERS - WELL ALMOST
Villa start on the front foot, pinning Reading in their own half. They string together an impressive passing move until Bannan concedes possession. It's like watching Barcelona without the end product.
2' NEW-LOOK DEFENCE
Interviewed before the match, Reading boss Brian McDermott said Adrian Mariappa's inclusion was down to squad rotation, while Shaun Cummings is in because Chris Gunter tweaked his hamstring yesterday.
1' HERE WE GO
Villa kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' TONIGHT'S TEAMS
Aston Villa: Guzan, Lowton, Baker, Clark, Stevens, Holman, Westwood, Bannan, Weimann, Agbonlahor, Benteke. Subs: Given, Ireland, El Ahmadi, Albrighton, Delph, Bowery, Lichaj. Reading: Federici, Cummings, Morrison, Mariappa, Shorey, Robson-Kanu, Leigertwood, Tabb, McAnuff, Roberts, Le Fondre. Subs: Taylor, Pearce, Pogrebnyak, Hunt, McCleary, Harte, Gunnarsson. 0' TEAM NEWS
It comes as no surprise, but the big news is that Paul Lambert has again left striker Darren Bent out of his matchday squad. Nathan Baker comes in for captain Ron Vlaar, who has a calf strain, and Brett Holman replaces Karim El Ahmadi. Reading also make two changes, with Shaun Cummings and Adrian Mariappa coming in for Chris Gunter and Kaspars Gorkss.
0' PREVIEW
Aston Villa and Reading meet at Villa Park on Tuesday in a battle between two of the bottom three clubs in the Premier League. A win for either team would take them out of the drop zone and give some much-needed belief they can turn things around entering the middle third of the season. Villa will be looking to build on their morale-boosting home draw with Arsenal on Saturday and must be looking at this home fixture as the first of what they will feel are three very winnable games with a trip to bottom side Queens Park Rangers and the visit of Stoke to follow in the next couple of weeks. The Midlanders have not scored in 220 minutes of football and it will be interesting to see if Paul Lambert once more continues to leave record signing Darren Bent out in the cold, with the England striker not even making the bench on Saturday. Reading's last-gasp defeat to Wigan at the weekend was indicative of the way their season has gone. They have actually scored the first goal in five of their 12 games, but their porous defence is letting them down, with 15 of the 22 goals they have leaked so far coming after the hour. As an attacking force, Villa are hardly the Premier League's equivalent to Barcelona, but even they will feel they can get among the goals tonight. Kick-off is at 2000GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
With no player having netted more than two goals this season and only two players in the side with more than one assist, it's hard to find someone in Paul Lambert's outfit who you can guarantee will have an impact in the attacking third of the pitch. The Villa boss, though, really likes the work-rate of Christian Benteke, who is a threat in the air and capable of hitting the target. The Belgian should get at least a couple of opportunities tonight because Reading have kept only one clean sheet this season. Adam Le Fondre's double against Everton ten days ago gave the Royals their only win of the season and made him their leading goal-scorer with three. Midfielder Jobi McAnuff has five assists for the Berkshire side, the same as Manchester City's Spain playmaker David Silva.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Villa have the better head-to-head record in eight league meetings between the sides with seven wins to one by Reading. At Villa Park, the home side have a perfect record with four wins out of four. The last league meeting came at the Madjeski Stadium in Feb. 2008. Villa won that game 2-1 with goals from Ashley Young and Marlon Harewood to complete the league double, having won 3-1 at Villa Park only the month before. The last meeting of any kind came in the FA Cup sixth round in 2010. Villa won 4-2 to reach the semi-finals, with Young again on the scoresheet and John Carew helping himself to a hat-trick.
0' FORM GUIDE
Villa sit in 18th place, with 10 points from 13 games, one point more than Reading, who sit directly below them but with a game in hand. The Villans have won just one of their last nine, an away success at Sunderland on Nov. 3, and the 2-0 victory over Swansea in September remains their only league success at Villa Park this season. The Royals have drawn six and lost five of their 12 games. They were beaten 3-2 at Wigan on Saturday, losing to an injury-time goal from Jordi Gomez. That defeat followed their only victory of the season so far, a 2-1 home triumph over Everton.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Villa captain Ron Vlaar is a major doubt after limping off against Arsenal with a calf injury. If the Dutchman is ruled out, his replacement on Saturday Eric Lichaj is likely to be drafted in at right-back, with Matt Lowton moving across to play in the centre of defence. Joe Bennett, Chris Herd, Charles N'Zogbia (all knee) and Richard Dunne (groin) are still out. Reading will again be without midfielder Jimmy Kebe, who has been bothered by a groin problem. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and midfielders Danny Guthrie and Jem Karacan are also ruled out.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Lee Probert, who was appointed to the Select Group Referees List in 2007. In terms of cards-per-game the Gloucestershire official was one of the most lenient in the top flight last season, producing just 44 yellow cards and four red cards in 22 matches. Probert has refereed eight Premier League games this season, administering 25 cautions and dismissing one player, Fulham's Brede Hangeland, in the match with Sunderland at Craven Cottage earlier this month. He also reached for the red card on his last visit to Villa Park, dismissing Tottenham's Danny Rose in the final match of last season. Probert's assistants today are John Flynn and Charles Breakspear, while Martin Atkinson is the fourth official.
