Manchester United vs. West Ham United
Minute Commentary
90' MANCHESTER UNITED 1, WEST HAM 0.
When Robin van Persie scored inside the first minute, we expected United to put on an exhibition against a very poor West Ham side. While the home side completely dominated throughout, their lack of prolificacy caused a nervy last few minutes. Nevertheless, Sir Alex Ferguson will be happy with the 1-0 win.
90' IT'S ALL OVER
Carlton Cole creates havoc in the area as he finds Kevin Nolan, who turns and fires the ball towards goal. Jonny Evans, who has been absolutely superb tonight, throws himself in the way to block the shot. Sir Alex ensures not a second more than allocated is played, and United hang on for the victory.
89' CRAZY DECISION
The ref has made some crazy decisions so far, but this is by far the strangest! Phil Jones takes a shot, which deflects off Javier Hernandez and goes behind. The Mexican forward looks perplexed as the ref awards a corner. Manchester United won't mind as it eats up another 40 seconds of precious time.
86' SIGN OF NERVES?
Manchester United are aware that their lead is very fragile, as a free kick 10 yards from the West Ham box ends up going right back to Anders Lindegaard. While West Ham United have offered precious little so far, there's definately a nervous vibe going around Old Trafford. Modibo Maiga tries his luck but his shot travels wide.
83' SO CLOSE!
Carlton Cole almost opens his account for the season with what would be a very important goal. Anders Lindegaard makes a superb save to deny the striker. Phil Jones comes on for Anderson to shore things up.
78' SUBSTITUTION
Danny Welbeck is sent on for the remainder of the game, as Wayne Rooney is applauded as he departs. Welbeck's first touch is an important one as he heads Guy Demel's cross behind. The West Ham players were lining up to nod it in there.
74' FANCY FOOTWORK
Superb work from Wayne Rooney, who receives the ball from Rafael and dances between a number of West Ham defenders before offloading to Robin van Persie, who is crucially dispossessed at the last minute. Gary O'Neil has come on for Mohamed Diame.
71' WEST HAM SHOWING PROMISE
United fans' hearts are in their mouths as Kevin Nolan fires towards goal. It goes marginally wide. At the other end Anderson hits the target but Jussi Jaaskelainen gets his knee in the way. This could be a nervy last few minutes for United if the scoreline remains as it is.
69' A COUPLE OF CHANCES FOR UNITED
Shots from Rooney and Rafael are ineffective, and Ashley Young's cross is poor. United are beginning to chip away at the West Ham defence but they just can't find an end product. Modibo Maiga comes on for Matthew Jarvis.
66' SUBSTITUTION
Tom Cleverley comes off for Ashley Young. West Ham's free kick is headed back across goal by James Tomkins but Rafael manages to clear. That underlines how fragile Manchester United's one-goal lead is at the moment.
65' JARVIS COULD BE NEXT
Matthew Jarvis has been really poor today, and once again his cross goes behind for a goal kick. I can't see Sam Allardyce putting up with this for much longer.
62' SUBSTITUTION
Sam Allardyce has seen enough and Andy Carroll's 62 minutes of ineffectiveness comes to an end. Carlton Cole replaces him.
59' GREAT SAVE
Wayne Rooney does brilliantly to get a shot away, it's unclear whether it's going in or not but Jussi Jaaskelainen tips it wide anyway. The resulting corner is deflected by James Tomkins and it almost ends up in his own net but Kevin Nolan manages to scramble it away.
57' FREE KICK
After some deliberation with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie is allowed to take the free kick. He beats the wall but Jussi Jaaskelainen is well-positioned at the near post.
55' BETTER ACTION
We've seen more action inside this opening 10 minutes of the second half than we did during the entire first period, except a goal, of course. West Ham United are more ambitious, but the Reds are creating more chances too. United have a free kick right on the edge of the area...
52' GOOD SPELL FROM UNITED
Two great crosses are unanswered for United; first Patrice Evra whips it in and the ball evades everyone. Wayne Rooney chases it down and delivers the ball from the opposite flank, but Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez are nowhere to be seen.
49' STURDY DEFENCE
The Manchester United defence are coping well with this new-found energy from the visitors. They come back on the counter and, although Rooney's initial shot is blocked, Tom Cleverley tests the keeper. Jussi Jaaskelainen is equal to it and tips it over but the ref wrongly gives a goal kick.
46' BRIGHT START
West Ham United create a chance inside the opening minute of the second period, with Mohamed Diame trying to curl it in. Anders Lindegaard makes a comfortable save but in doing so concedes a corner. It is cleared with ease.
46' SECOND HALF
We're back out for the second half. Both sides are unchanged in terms of personelle, but I'm sure that both managers have had something to say at the break. Sir Alex will have stressed the need for a cushioning goal, while Big Sam - well, where to start? - will have given his team a rocket as they failed to cause any problems whatsoever in the first half.
45' FIRST HALF SUMMARY
It's been a strange first half with United taking the lead, Andy Carroll winning nothing in the air and inconsistent refereeing. Within 40 seconds, the home side opened the scoring through Robin van Persie, and from there the possession they've had has been unbelievable. Sir Alex will be a little disappointed that his side are only one goal ahead, but if things don't change after the break, I can see the Reds running away with this one.
45' LATE HALF-CHANCES
Robin van Persie gets a header in and James Collins blocks; Wayne Rooney follows up but it's nowhere near the target. That's the last action of the half as United go in a goal to the good.
41' WHERE'S THE DESIRE?
Manchester United are hardly setting the world alight with their performance so far, and West Ham United - but for their terrible passing accuracy - have plenty of opportunities to cause problems. Andy Carroll isn't having a great time, being outmuscled by Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans each time he gets the ball. Big Sam will be having words at the interval.
38' LACK OF CHANCES
The action has become pretty flat as the first half draws to a conclusion. The home side are still dominating possession but chances are few and far between.
33' GOOD BUILD-UP
West Ham United are allowing Manchester United far too much space to pass and shoot. It's Anderson again but his effort is woeful as his shot flies miles off target. Still, Sam Allardyce won't be happy with the space he was afforded. Mind you, there no need to close players down when they shoot like that!
29' ANDERSON SHOT
Manchester United have some decent possesion, mainly threatening on the right wing. Anderson has a go first and Jussi Jaaskelainen parries away, but moments later the West Ham keeper is forced into a much harder save by Javier Hernandez. Great save to keep the deficit at one!
26' CONSISTENCY?
Michael Carrick makes a late challenge on James Tomkins, who stays down momentarily. Judging by the standards already shown in the match, Carrick really should be booked but the ref shows leniency. From the resulting free kick, Andy Carroll volleys it towards goal but it's always heading over the bar.
22' GREAT CROSS
West Ham United create their first meaningful opportunity of the game as Kevin Nolan delivers a great ball in, but nobody can convert it.
19' POOR ATTACKS
When West Ham do come forward - and that's a rarity - they aren't troubling United at all. you'd think that Andy Carroll would provide an aerial threat but he is somehow outjumped by Rafael. That's right - the shortest guy on the pitch outjumped the tallest.
15' ALL TOO EASY
Manchester United are controlling the game completely at the moment and West Ham are finding it hard to string any passes together. The home side aren't creating any clear-cut chances at the moment but with the attacking flair they've got on display, a goal could come from anywhere. Javier Hernandez outpaces the defence but his shot is inaccurate.
10' FREE KICK
Rafael concedes a free kick in a fairly dangerous position, which you never want to do with Andy Carroll playing for the opposition. West Ham opt for a training ground routine as Matthew Taylor's delivery towards the back post is backheeled towards goal by Kevin Nolan. Luckily for the Reds, it goes into the side-netting.
7' COUNTER-ATTACK
Originally, I'd guess West Ham's tactics were to frustrate the Reds, but obviously that plan is now dismissed and in going forward, they are suseptible to counter-attacks. The home side win the ball back and break in a wave of players. Robin van Persie delays his pass a little too long and Rafael fails to control the ball.
5' CARROLL A PRESENCE
It's a terrible start for the visitors, who now have to chase the game right from the off. West Ham get the ball forward and Andy Carroll uses his strength to create some space, but his shot doesn't trouble the keeper. Kevin Nolan is subsequently booked for a cynical foul on Tom Cleverley.
1' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Well, Sir Alex Ferguson was insistent that he wanted the first goal and he could't have wished for it to come any earlier than that! West Ham haven't even had a sniff of the ball as Tom Cleverley races through the midfield, plays it off to Michael Carrick, who picks out ROBIN VAN PERSIE on the edge of the area; he turns and shoots. The ball deflects off James Collins and loops over Jussi Jaaskelainen.
1' GOOOAAALLL
33 seconds gone and Robin van Persie opens the scoring!
0' WE'RE OFF
We're underway at Old Trafford.
0' UNITED FORMATION
Sir Alex has opted for a very attacking formation this evening with Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney all starting. The formation seems to have undergone a slight reshuffle, and the inclusion of Michael Carrick should allow Tom Cleverley a little more creative freedom. The only concern would be the lack of width in the United side; neither Nani or Antonio Valencia start and a lack of width is what cost them against Norwich.
0' WEST HAM LINE-UP
Matthew Jarvis comes in to the line-up, with Mark Noble suspended. Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll have shown promise as an attacking partnership and the West Ham frontman is bound to cause problems from both set pieces and open play, especially with Kevin Nolan - who has already scored five this season - playing just behind him.
0' MANCHESTER UNITED LINE-UP
Anders Lindegaard continues his run of games, with David De Gea making the bench following a dental procedure that has kept him out of the past two games. Anderson steps in for the suspended Paul Scholes, while Javier Hernandez's goal-scoring form earns him a place in the starting XI alongside Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie.

0' WEST HAM TEAM NEWS
West Ham will also be lacking in midfield, with Mark Noble joining Scholes with one card too many. George McCartney picked up a knock against Spurs at the weekend and remains a doubt. Jack Collison, Ricardo Vaz Te and Yossi Benayoun are some way away from returning to action.
0' MAN UTD TEAM NEWS
The hosts will be without legendary midfielder Paul Scholes, who is absent through suspension – in-form Anderson looks set to deputise, while Ryan Giggs could also feature on the eve of his 39th birthday. Antonio Valencia is also very doubtful, so flamboyant Portuguese midfielder Nani could be handed another chance to impress.
0' PREVIOUS MEETINGS
West Ham aren't known for their upsets at Old Trafford, as they have outscored Sir Alex's team on only three of the last 21 visits. Most notably, the Hammers assured survival on the final game of the 2006/07 season, when a Carlos Tevez goal was enough to seal a rare win against United. The Red Devils have won the last seven meetings between the two sides.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
Tonight's slice of action in Stretford features current table-toppers Manchester United, who host West Ham United at Old Trafford. West Ham's return to the top flight has started well, as Allardyce's men have notched up five wins and four draws up to now. Their form has been sporadic but they are yet to lose two on the bounce in league action – Hammers fans will be happy with eighth place but they can't lose momentum as we head into the crucial month of December. Manchester United occupy the top spot, a point ahead of rivals and current champions, Manchester City, who are in action against Wigan this evening. With City strong favourites to gain three points, United really need a win in order to maintain their advantage.
