Wigan Athletic vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
90' FT: WIGAN 0 MAN CITY 2
Two goals in three minutes from Mario Balotelli and James Milner midway through the second half give a relieved Manchester City a win at the DW Stadium which keeps them on the coat-tails of rivals United at the top of the table. Balotelli profited from a second goalkeeping error in five days from Ali Al Habsi, who spilled a shot from Gareth Barry that he really should have held. Balotelli, who had barely featured in the match, atoned for an earlier glaring miss by netting at the second attempt. There was not a goalkeeper on the planet who could have kept out Milner's breathtaking strike from outside the box shortly after. The result was extremely harsh on Wigan, who were far from overawed and enjoyed spells of dominance in the match, particularly early in the second half. They will look with regret at the free header directed wide by Aroune Kone when the game was still goalless shortly after half-time. Had that gone in they might not have lost their sixth successive league game against City.
90' WIGAN SUBSTITUTION
Zabaleta needs treatment in the City area, but he will be fine. In the meantime Callum McManaman comes on for Ronnie Stam for Wigan.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be three minutes of stoppage time.
88' FINAL WARNING
Franco Di Santo gets a final warning from Mr Halsey. One more foul, son, and you're in the book were his words.
84' KONE DENIED
The ball just won't drop to Kone on the edge of the City six-yard box and Kompany is there in a flash to whip it off the foot of the Ivorian.
82' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Kolo Toure is the man selected by Mancini to replace the stricken Milner.
81' MILNER LIMPS OFF
James Milner is down with an injury and he will have to come off. It's something wrong with his right leg, probably a hamstring.
78' CLOSE TO A THIRD
City threaten to add a third. Boyce is unable to clear a cross from the right from Toure and the resulting shot from Maicon whistles past the post.
75' WIGAN SUBSTITUTION
Wigan make their first change, with James McArthur replacing David Jones.
73' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Wigan are dazed. Silva held up the ball, passed it square to Barry and he teed up Milner who lashed a vicious shot into the top corner from outside the area. That was a quite magnificent strike.
72' GOAL: WIGAN 0 MAN CITY 2
James Milner puts City two up with a stunner.
70' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a howler from Al Habsi, who spilled a tame shot from Barry. Balotelli saw his first effort blocked by the goalkeeper, but put the rebound into an unguarded net.
69' GOAL: WIGAN 0 MAN CITY 1
Mario Balotelli gives City the lead.
66' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Mancini makes a second switch and it's a surprising one, with Aleksandar Kolarov replacing Sergio Aguero.
64' MAN CITY BOOKING
Gareth Barry is cautioned for a clumsy tackle on Jordi Gomez. It is his first yellow card of the season.
62' CITY UNDER THREAT
Wigan carve City apart with some incisive football. Beausejour delivers a wicked cross from the left that is just out of the reach of Kone in the centre and Gomez heads into the side-netting from beyond the far post.
60' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Javi Garcia's latest mistake is his last one. He makes way for James Milner.
57' KONE SPURNS HIS BIG CHANCE
McCarthy's wonderful ball in from the right finds Kone all alone 12 yards from goal, but he inexplicably directs his header wide of goal. That was Wigan's best chance of the match.
56' GARCIA OFF THE PACE
Javi Garcia has not been at the races for City tonight. It would be no surprise to see him make way before long. The same goes for super Mario.
54' BAD MISS FROM BALOTELLI
City play some lovely football to create some space for Maicon on the right. The full-back delivers the perfect ball for Balotelli at the far post, but he heads wide from six yards. That was a woeful effort from the Italian.
52' PENALTY CLAIMS
Barry goes down in the box claiming he was held by Stam. City haven't been given a spot-kick away from home in three years, but that would have been a harsh award against the Wigan man. Yaya Toure then blazes over.
49' WASTED FREE-KICK
City win a free-kick in a promising central position, some 30 yards out. Balotelli only has eyes for goal but unfortunately his shot gets no further than the defensive wall.
47' SHOT FROM SILVA
The second half starts brightly, just as the first did. David Silva manages a shot on target from 20 yards, but even Ali Al Habsi is not going to make a mess of that one like he did against Reading on Saturday.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
City get the second half under way. Neither side has made any changes at the interval.
45' HT: WIGAN O MAN CITY 0
It's goalless at the break and plaudits go to Wigan, who have been far from overawed by a visit from the champions. There has been absolutely nothing to choose between the sides and although both managers have not set out to defend goalmouth action has been at a premium. Sergio Aguero has had two efforts for City wide of the target, but he and Mario Balotelli have not hit it off at all tonight. That Toure effort just before the half-time whistle was as close as they have come. As for the home side, Jean Beausejour has seen a shot blocked, Arouna Kone has headed just over and Jordi Gomez saw a well-struck free-kick go narrowly over.
45' CITY SHOT ON TARGET
Toure wriggles clear down the bye-line in first-half stoppage time and stabs a shot goalwards from a narrow angle that Al Habsi parries away. That's as close as City have come.
45' WIGAN BOOKING
Gomez takes a tumble over a tackle from Zabaleta hoping for a penalty. He made a real meal of that, it should be a booking for the Wigan man. Moments later Gomez is shown the yellow card for hacking down Barry.
43' LATICS LOOKING SOLID
Wigan have conceded 13 goals at home this season, more than any other Premier League club prior to the latest round of fixtures. You wouldn't know it, looking at the display they have put on so far tonight.
39' DANGEROUS FREE-KICK
Aguero is harshly penalised for what referee Mark Halsey adjudged to be a foul some 30 yards from goal even though he got a foot on the the ball. Gomez curls a left-footed effort which goes about a foot over the angle of post and crossbar. That had Hart worried.
35' KONE NOT FAR AWAY
Ronnie Stam does magnificently to hare past Garcia and Zabaleta down the right. The Dutchman digs out a cross for Kone, but the near-post header goes over the bar.
32' LACKING DRIVE FROM MIDFIELD
I know it seems daft, but City for me are often far more dangerous when they play with a single striker rather than two up front. When they go with a lone frontman it gives Yaya Youre licence to roam forward and be a real driving force from midfield. At the moment it is incredible that so many talented attacking players can create so little. Credit to Wigan, mind you.
28' LOPEZ ALERT TO THE DANGER
Aguero tries to seize on a Wigan defensive blunder, but Lopez does very well to get back and snuff out the danger.
25' A SLOW BURNER
City have the Premier League's best defensive record, conceding just 10 goals in 13 matches. They have looked watertight so far tonight at the back, but pretty feeble going forward.
22' AGUERO SHOOTS WIDE
For once, Wigan are sloppy in defence with Figueroa giving the ball away. The Honduran is relieved to see Aguero's 25-yarder fly well wide of the post.
21' FAR FROM A FULL HOUSE
It's amazing to me that Wigan are able to sustain a Premier League team. They have one of the smallest stadiums in the top flight, the champions are in town and still there are heaps of empty seats.
17' SHOT BLOCKED
Wigan are enjoying the lion's share of possession at the moment. Suddenly they create an overlap down the left flank and Beausejour cuts inside before driving a shot that rebounds to safety off Kompany.
13' ATTACK BEST FORM OF DEFENCE
Wigan have problems at the back tonight, so they will be hoping to play as much of this match as possible in City's half of the pitch. Maicon's back on and fine, by the way.
11' MAICON NEEDS TREATMENT
Maicon is writhing around on the floor after catching the full force of a cross from the left. The ball hit him in the throat and the Brazilian needs treatment.
10' BEST OF FRIENDS
The two managers practically came out arm in arm earlier. You wouldn't see that with Rafa Benitez and Sir Alex Ferguson. Fact.
8' GREEDY FROM AGUERO
Silva feeds a ball outside to Aguero, who tries an extremely ambitious shot from a very tight angle that finds the side-netting.
6' PLAYING CATCH-UP
As it stands, City are now three points behind rivals United, who have taken a lead in 33 seconds against West Ham.
4' KONE SHOT ON TARGET
Wigan look good going forward when a City move breaks down. Di Santo feeds Kone, whose low drive stings the palms of Hart.
2' EARLY THREAT
Maicon threatens down the right, but his early cross is fractionally too long for Aguero.
1' HERE WE GO
Wigan kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' PREVIEW
Manchester City travel to Wigan looking for a convincing win in the hope of kick-starting their season and silencing the doubters who suggest that the champions are not the force they were last year. Roberto Mancini's men gained a creditable point at Chelsea in a dull match at the weekend, but it proved insufficient to prevent them surrendering the lead in the Premier League just a week after they had assumed top spot for the first time. With Manchester United hosting West Ham tonight, it's highly unlikely that even a win for City will do anything other than keep them on the coat-tails of their nearest rivals. Wigan may have managed wins over Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United towards the tail-end of last season, but City are one of the big boys they have not been able to come to terms with so far. Even so, manager Robert Martinez has pledged his side will continue to attack, whatever the opposition. And with City assistant manager David Platt earlier this week bemoaning the number of draws racked up already by the men from Manchester it promises to be a thrilling end-to-end encounter. Just in case you were wondering, you can get a best-priced 15-1 on the goalless draw. Tonight's game kicks off at 2000GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Jordi Gomez made the most of his first start in two months against Reading on Saturday, becoming only the second Spaniard to register a hat-trick in the Premier League after Fernando Torres. The former Barcelona man should keep his place tonight and it will be interesting to see if he can make any sort of impact against Vincent Kompany and Co., especially as it's been 495 minutes since the Latics managed to find the net against their near-ish neighbours. Carlos Tevez has been some way below his brilliant best for most of the season, but has still managed to help himself to six goals and eight assists, second only to Chelsea's Eden Hazard. The Argentina forward only came on for the last 22 minutes at Stamford Bridge and should be recalled to the starting line-up tonight. Edin Dzeko, who drew a blank in a rare start at the Bridge, has scored the same number of goals as Tevez, but in 479 minutes this season compared to the 939 played by his team-mate.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
City have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with eight wins to five by Wigan and three games being drawn. At the DW Stadium (and once at Springfield Park), it is three wins apiece with two draws. The corresponding match last season on Jan. 16 produced a single-goal victory for City, Edin Dzeko netting the winner on 22 minutes. That completed the double for the yet-to-be-crowned champions, Sergio Aguero's hat-trick having given them a 3-0 triumph at the Etihad on Sep 10. City, in fact, have won the last five meetings between the sides without conceding a goal.
0' FORM GUIDE
Wigan start the night in 15th place with 14 points from 13 games. City are in second with 29 points, one behind leaders Manchester United. The Latics came from a goal down to beat Reading last time out, their third win in five games. Last season, they were in the bottom three following 24 of the 38 games they played. This term, somewhat surprisingly, they have yet to feature in the drop-zone. City were held to their second successive away goalless draw by Chelsea on Sunday, though they remain the Premier League's only undefeated team.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Wigan will be without defender Ivan Ramis, who was forced off against Reading with a hamstring injury. Shaun Maloney (groin), who was also hurt in that match, faces a late fitness test, as does Gary Caldwell (hamstring). Midfielder James McArthur and striker Franco di Santo are pushing for inclusion after proving their fitness as substitutes. Albert Crusat (knee), Ben Watson (broken leg), Ryo Miyaichi (ankle) and Antolin Alcaraz (groin) are all still out. City left-back Gael Clichy will miss his third match with an ankle problem, but Vincent Kompany came through the Chelsea game without suffering a recurrence of his knee problem and should start. Jack Rodwell (hamstring) and Micah Richards (knee) remain out.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mark Halsey, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2001. The Lancashire official has shown just 10 yellow cards in five top-flight games this season but has produced two straight red cards, to Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone against Norwich and Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey against Manchester United. Halsey also showed a straight red to Leeds' Luke Varney at Millwall the week before last, a surprising turn of events considering entering this season he had gone 57 matches in all competitions without dismissing a single player. His assistants today are Lee Betts and Mick McDonough, while Mike Dean is the fourth official.
