Arsenal vs. Swansea City
Minute Commentary
90' MAGIC MICHU'S DOUBLE AT THE DEATH
Michu struck twice in three frantic minutes right on the stroke of full time to send Swansea City to a 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates. The first half was a low-key affair with plenty of passing but not many opportunities, Gervinho sending a header narrowly wide for the Gunners and Jonathan de Guzman just clearing the bar with a free kick. The game exploded into life after half time as Arsenal stepped things up, with the excellent Santi Cazorla twice going close. As the game wore on the Swans looked more and more dangerous on the counter-attack, Wojciech Szczesny pulling off one terrific save from Ben Davies. It finally paid off as Michu ran onto Leon Britton's 88th-minute through ball to calmly slot home, repeating the act three minutes later following a Carl Jenkinson mistake. Arsenal plunge deeper into despair while for Swansea it seems the only way is up at the moment.
90' FULL TIME ARSENAL 0 SWANSEA 2
The boos ring out as Mark Clattenburg signals full time.
90' GOAL!!! SWANSEA
If the result wasn't certain before it certainly is now. Carl Jenkinson is caught dallying on the ball on the halfway line and Nathan Dyer sticks a foot in. It spins fortuitously to MICHU, who sprints clear to finish left-footed with ease from just inside the area. It's turned into a dark day for Arsenal and a very bright one for Swansea.
88' GOAL!!! SWANSEA
As the Gunners press forward, Leon Britton unlocks their defence with a sweet through ball to set MICHU away. The Spaniard makes no mistake to slot the ball past the grounded keeper for his eighth Premier League goal of the season. That must be the winner, and the Arsenal fans' disquiet can be heard loud and clear.
87' VERMAELEN SO UNLUCKY
Oxlade-Chamberlain turns inside onto his right foot and whips in a wicked cross. Vermaelen strains every sinew to get his bonce to the ball, but Tremell is equal to it.
85' YELLOW CARD
Thomas Vermaelen picks up the first booking of the game for a late challenge on Moore.
84' TERRIFIC SAVE
Gibbs dives in hastily on Moore, who is granted space to lay the ball back for the onrushing Ben Davies. The young full back sees his name in lights as he strikes a decent shot from 16 yards, only to see Wojciech Szczesny deny him with a top-class diving save.
82' STILL SHOUTING
The fans are still shouting their hearts out in support of Arsenal, but it surely won't last much longer if they can't stick the ball in the net.
79' SUBSTITUTION
Wilshere leaves the fray to be replaced by Tomas Rosicky, the Czech receiving a loud cheer on his return from injury.
76' LONG-RANGER
An ambitious 30-yard effort from Moore spins off Mertesacker's back and out for a corner, which comes to nothing.
75' SUBSTITUTION
De Guzman makes way for Dwight Tiendalli, the Dutchman dropping into right back with Rangel moving forward.
73' RUNNING MAN
Luke Moore's pass into the path of Michu finds the Spaniard rampaging forward at full speed, the run taking him around Mertesacker to test Szczesny with a decent low driven effort.
72' STRAIGHT AT THE KEEPER
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's dink into the area is headed out by Ashley Williams, the ball dropping nicely for Cazorla to pelt a volley straight at Tremmel from the edge of the box.
70' STILL NO PENALTY
The fans scream for a penalty as Olivier Giroud collapses inside the box under Chico Flores' challenge. It looked like the defender might have got a slight toe-end to the ball, but it was a very tight decision indeed.
67' SUBSTITUTIONS
Shortly after De Guzman blasts a long-range effort over the bar, the board goes up to signal some changes. Arsene Wenger freshens things up with a double switch, bringing Olivier Giroud and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on for Podolski and Gervinho, while Michael Laudrup sends Luke Moore on for Shechter.
65' CRANKING UP THE PRESSURE
The home side are pressing hard, the ball sticking to their feet around the edge of the Swansea area. The visitors are still doing well to prevent them from ever getting a clear shot away.
62' WHAT A RUN
Angel Rangel sprints up the pitch against the run of play, beating Walcott and Vermaelen to reach the 18-yard line and shoot low for the near post, Szczesny getting down well to push the ball out for a corner.
61' SURPRISE SHOT
Cazorla is really pulling the strings for Arsenal now. This time the playmaker carries the ball forward and shows initiative to shoot from 25 yards through a crowd of players. Gerhard Tremmel is surprised by the effort but manages to react quickly enough to make a save.
58' NO PENALTY
Gibbs feeds Walcott, who chips the ball inside to Santi Cazorla. The Spaniard's first touch takes him into the area where he tumbles under the attentions of Williams and Flores, but the ref shakes his head. It did look like the ball was running away from the unfortunate Cazorla.
55' DEFLECTED WIDE
Itay Shechter cuts across Per Mertesacker and lets fly with his right boot, the forward's effort deflecting off Arteta's outstretched leg and out for a corner kick.
52' WRONG DECISION
The Gunners get a chance to break with numbers, but Walcott chooses the wrong option to chip a ball in towards Podolski and the move breaks down, Ben Davies mopping up the danger with ease.
51' ARSENAL IMPROVE
Arsenal have emerged from the dressing room with far greater urgency and are looking dangerous. The crowd are suddenly right behind them too, which is helping no end.
48' FALL GUY
Jack Wilshere shows great feet to slalom into the area before falling over. Not to be deterred, the midfielder gets up to play the ball across goal where Cazorla stings the goalkeeper's palms with a rising drive.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are back out and the second half is underway, with neither side having made any changes at the break.
45' POSSESSION PLAY
We've had no goals so far here at the Emirates and not too many chances. Both sides, as expected, have played some pretty football, but it's been mostly about possession without a cutting edge. Thomas Vermaelen and Ashley Williams have been the stars of the show, which tells its own tale, although Arsenal full backs Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson have been impressive in getting forward and supplying crosses. One such ball in from Gibbs found Gervinho in acres of space just before half time, but the Ivorian could only steer his header wide. Earlier Nathan Dyer went through on goal only to be denied by brilliant defending from Vermaelen, while Jonthan de Guzman bent a superb free kick narrowly over the bar. There's reason to hope for goals after the break.
45' HALF TIME ARSENAL 0 SWANSEA 0
Mark Clattenburg signals the end of the first half without seeing any need for stoppage time.
45' WHAT A MISS
Cazorla finds Kieran Gibbs on the left, the defender playing in an instant cross. Gervinho is perfectly-placed to convert the chance but instead plants a poor header wide of the target.
43' QUICK THINKING
Santi Cazorla relieves Sung-Yueng of the ball in an advanced position and tries to play an early ball into Walcott. The England man isn't able to control his colleague's strongly-struck pass on the run and the chance goes begging.
41' THE NATIVES ARE RESTLESS
The crowd are getting restless as half time approaches without their heroes creating any clear-cut chances. Swansea are doing a great job of closing down at speed whenever their opponents have the ball.
38' TERRIFIC EFFORT
Arteta bundles over Michu right on the edge of the box to concede a dangerous free kick. Jonathan de Guzman steps up confidently to bend a sweet effort only just over the bar with Szczesny rooted to the spot.
35' SPEED DEMON
Theo Walcott zips forward with a trademark burst of pace, leaving defenders trailing in his wake to pull the ball back for Podolski. The former Bayern Munich man isn't quick-thinking enough to reach his colleague's pass.
33' ROUTE ONE
The Swans show they can mix it up as Chico Flores pumps a long ball over the top for Shechter to chase. Szczesny is first to the ball on this occasion.
30' TRACKING BACK
Michu's deft touch sends Nathan Dyer scampering through, the winger looking set to score until a slight stumble allows Vermaelen the time to get back and put in a superb block tackle. The Belgian has saved Arsenal several times already in this match.
29' WEAK HEADER
Jenkinson again gets free down the right and loops in a cross towards Santi Cazorla, whose headed effort drops weakly into Gerhard Tremmel's arms. The diminutive Spaniard has many talents but heading may not be one of them.
27' PODOLSKI BLOCKED OUT
Lukas Podolski finds himself inside the Swansea area with the ball at his feet, the German taking a couple of touches to adjust before seeing his driven effort blocked by the flying body of Williams.
25' SO CLOSE GERVINHO
Gervinho can't quite make up the yards as he goes to divert a whipped Jenkinson cross into the net. Any connection there would likely have resulted in a goal.
23' WHAT A WASTE
Swansea get the chance to fire the ball into the box after Kieran Gibbs fouls Itay Shechter over by the right touchline. Sung-Yueng wastefully fires it straight into the wall.
20' TACKLING THOMAS
Thomas Vermaelen pops up with a superb last-ditch challenge as Nathan Dyer bursts into the area. That's the third top tackle the skipper has supplied in the opening 20 minutes.
17' TRIPLE TROUBLE
The Gunners' forward line is looking fluid today, with Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski and Gervinho all switching positions constantly. The visiting defence is doing well to cope with this triple threat so far.
14' DOUBLE SAVE
Ben Davies receives a pass from Ki Sung-Yueng inside the Arsenal box and swivels to play in the approaching Angel Rangel, who shoots powerfully towards the bottom corner. Wojciech Szczesny gets down brilliantly to make the save and then does even better to jump straight up and deny the frustrated Rangel on the rebound.
12' HONOURS EVEN
It's been pretty even so far at the Emirates, with both sides unsurprisingly showing some excellent technical prowess but at present failing to unlock either defence.
9' JENKINSON HITS ONE
Mikel Arteta feeds the ball out to Jenkinson on the right, the full back cutting inside De Guzman to send a left-footed effort swirling over the angle of post and bar.
6' LAST-DITCH DEFENDING
Jonathan de Guzman bends a free kick into the box. The set-piece evades several defenders and looks set to bounce through to the waiting Ashley Williams, but Carl Jenkinson does well to take it off the centre back's toes as he winds up the shot.
4' PATTERN OF PLAY
Swansea are sitting back in these opening minutes and watching Arsenal pass the ball around in front of them. The one time the visitors do get possession they show what they can do with a rapid move that sees Michu set up Angel Rangel for a cross on the overlap that comes to nothing.
1' KICK OFF
Referee Mark Clattenburg blows the whistle and we're underway here at the Emirates.
0' LINE-UPS ANNOUNCED
Arsene Wenger brings in Carl Jenkinson for the injured Laurent Koscielny, while Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud drop to the bench to be replaced by Jack Wilshere and Gervinho. For Swansea Itay Shechter and Jonathan de Guzman come in for Wayne Routledge and Pablo Hernandez.
0' SWANSEA TEAM NEWS
Danny Graham's illness sees the striker join the injured Pablo Hernandez on the sidelines, but Chico Flores is fit to play after recovering from a shoulder problem.
0' ARSENAL TEAM NEWS
Theo Walcott and Bacary Sagna face late fitness tests on ankle and foot injuries respectively, while Lukas Podolski has been struggling with a virus. Laurent Koscielny is ruled out with a thigh strain.
0' ONE TO WATCH
Arsene Wenger has backed centre back Thomas Vermaelen to show what he can do against Swansea's potent attack. The Gunners boss hailed his captain's performance against Everton in midweek as his 'best game since the start of the season', in a move designed to boost the Belgian's sometimes fragile confidence. There's no doubting he has the ability to be one of the best defenders around.
0' INJURY WOES
Swansea suffered a blow yesterday as outstanding midfielder Pablo Hernandez was ruled out for ten days with a thigh muscle strain. The skilful Spaniard picked up the problem in the midweek victory over West Brom and will miss today's clash along with next weekend's meeting with Norwich.
0' QUIDS OUT
Financially astute Arsenal are taking extra measures to safeguard the club's future with some unusual contract negotiations. New deals on the table for players including Jack Wilshere, Carl Jenkinson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are said to include clauses which would activate a wage cut should the Gunners fail to qualify for the Champions League. Some extra incentive for the players never hurt either.
0' REF WATCH
Mark Clattenburg takes charge of his second Premier League match since returning from suspension following allegations of racism. The experienced official has shown a grand total of 30 yellow cards in seven top-flight games this season, so known perpetrators such as Chico Flores had better watch out.
0' ARSENAL V SWANSEA
Two of the Barclays Premier League's most entertaining teams come together at the Emirates today as Swansea City visit Arsenal, so with any luck we're in for some beautiful football. That the two sides lie in seventh and eighth place in the table respectively only brings added spice to the proceedings. The Gunners are in the midst of one of their all-too-frequent patches of poor form, having won just two of their last eight games in all competitions, but Arsene Wenger remains calm and in control as ever. Michael Laudrup's side have been going great guns for their new manager and are unbeaten in five Premier League outings. Both teams will feel they can leave the Emirates with all three points, so we should see both going all out for glory.
