Queens Park Rangers vs. Aston Villa
Minute Commentary
90' FT: QPR 1 ASTON VILLA 1
Harry Redknapp's first home game as QPR manager ends in a disappointing draw, as Rangers equal an unwanted Premier League record of still being winless 15 games into the start of the new season. To be fair to Redknapp's side they dominated proceedings after falling behind to a well-struck shot from Brett Holman after eight minutes. Jamie Mackie, so often overlooked by Mark Hughes, levelled ten minutes later with a flicked header. Christian Benteke had a goal disallowed for offside soon after, but other than that the game was all about the goalkeeping exploits of Brad Guzan, who made superb stops to deny Shaun Wright-Phillips and Park Ji-Sung. Wright-Phillips also saw a shot come back off the foot of a post. Villa did well to largely shut up shop in the second half, though QPR did hit the woodwork again through Clint Hill's header. There is no doubt, though, that the visitors will be much the happier with a point. Rangers lost Stephane Mbia to what seemed like a serious injury in the first half.
90' BENTEKE DENIED
Benteke is just setting himself to shoot for goal, but Hill is across in the nick of time to take the ball off the Belgian's foot.
90' EL AHMADI GOES CLOSE
Villa launch an attack through Agbonlahor. He finds El Ahmadi and the Moroccan's drive is not far away.
88' HARRY'S HOME RECORD
Harry Redknapp has never lost a Premier League home debut as a manager - winning two (both with Portsmouth) and drawing three. That record looks like remaining intact.
84' COUNTING DOWN THE MINUTES
Villa win a free-kick, but Lichaj's delivery is cleared by Rangers and Bosingwa launches a counter-attack which is also quickly snuffed out. This game is heading for a draw.
80' OFF THE POST AGAIN
Rangers hit the woodwork again, Hill rising highest at a corner and Guzan tipping the ball on to the bar.
76' SHORT OF OPTIONS
Harry Redknapp will be disappointed he has been forced to use all three of his substitutes, because he'd love to bring on Djibril Cisse about now.
72' VILLA SUBSTITUTION
Villa goalscorer Brett Holman is taken off, Karim El Ahmadi coming on in his place. That means no Darren Bent today.
70' QPR SUBSTITUTION
Diakite has not been able to run that injury off, so he makes way for Junior Hoilett.
69' VILLA SUBSTITUTIONS
Derrick Williams is on for his Villa debut, replacing Chris Herd. And Fabian Delph is on for Barry Bannan.
67' DIAKITE INJURY WORRY
This is bad news for Harry Redknapp. Samba Diakite has picked up a knock and looks like he will have to go off.
64' VILLA BOOKING
Mr Webb's notebook is out again. This time he is writing down the name of Lowton, again for a mis-timed tackle.
62' QPR BOOKING
Benteke tricks Derry into a mis-timed tackle which earns the Rangers midfielder a yellow card.
59' GUZAN THERE AGAIN
Park escapes down the inside-left channel after collecting a pass from Taarabt and drives an angled shot goalwards, only to see Guzan again get in the way. The Villa stopper is on his way to man-of-the-match honours at the moment.
57' GUZAN SAVES AGAIN
There is only one team going to win this the way the match is panning out. Diakite's shot forces Guzan into another good save.
56' SHOT DEFLECTED WIDE
Shaun Wright-Phillips escapes his man and sees a goalbound shot deflected for a corner. There is a mad panic following the ensuing corner, but Villa scramble the ball away and can breathe again.
52' TODAY'S ATTENDANCE
Today's attendance is 17,300, with 1,632 of those being Villa fans.
50' PARK CALLED INTO ACTION
Park Ji-Sung has come on at the interval for QPR, with Esteban Granero making way. That's no surprise as we hardly mentioned Granero's name in the first half.
49' VILLA BOOKING
A callous body-check from Nathan Baker earns the Villa defender a booking.
48' MACKIE FIRES HIGH, VERY HIGH
The home side have the first half-chance, but Mackie launches his shot into orbit.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Villa kick off the second half.
45' HT: QPR 1 ASTON VILLA 1
It's all square at the break after what has been a breathless first half. Villa were quickly into their stride and took the lead with a long-range strike from Brett Holman after just eight minutes. QPR, though, were only behind for ten minutes, Jamie Mackie drawing them level with a flicked header. Shaun Wright-Phillips then twice came close to giving Harry Redknapp's side the lead, first shooting straight at Brad Guzan after getting clean through and then seeing a rasping drive come back off the post. Rangers lost Stephane Mbia to what looked like a serious injury late in the half.
45' STOPPAGE TIME
We are in the second of seven minutes of added time after that Mbia injury.
45' HOLMAN FIRES OVER
Holman has another shooting chance from long range, but this time his effort is miles over the bar.
44' LOSING THEIR WAY
That Mbia injury has taken the impetus out of QPR's play, they were well on top beforehand but are obviously stunned to see one of their team-mates carried off.
41' AGBONLAHOR DENIED
Villa break quickly and Agbonlahor sees his curling effort saved by Green.
40' QPR SUBSTITUTION
Mbia is carried off on a stretcher and Shaun Derry comes on as a substitute.
37' MBIA BADLY HURT
Mbia is down in need of treatment after colliding with the shoulder of Agbonlahor. It doesn't look good and the player is surrounded by medical staff.
34' OFF THE POST
Rangers are bossing this game. Wright-Phillips gets the better of Guzan this time, but sees his drive come back off the base of the upright.
31' GREAT SAVE BY GUZAN
Wright-Phillips brings the ball down superbly and is through on goal, but Guzan makes a splendid save to deny the former Manchester City winger.
28' HAPPY RETURNS
It's Villa midfielder Barry Bannan's 23rd birthday today, and striker Christian Benteke is 22 on Monday.
25' UNWANTED HISTORY
If QPR fail to win today they will equal Swindon's Premier League record of 15 games without victory from the start of the season, set in 1993-94. The Robins conceded 100 goals that season.
21' GOAL DISALLOWED
Villa think they have regained the lead, but although Benteke's header from a Lowton cross finds the net, the goal is chalked off for offside.
19' GOAL: QPR 1 ASTON VILLA 1
Rangers are level. A right-wing cross catches Villa's defence flat-footed and Jamie Mackie's flicked header finds the net.
17' LICHAJ FIRES OVER
Lowton makes inroads down the right and delivers a good-looking cross, but Lichaj launches his shot into the second tier of the stand.
15' DIAKITE SCUFFS A SHOT WIDE
Diakite is not renowned for being a goal-scorer and that is evident for all to see as he drags a pitiful shot well wide.
13' EARLY GOAL A SHOCK
You would have got good odds on this match, featuring the division's two lowest scorers, producing the first goal of the 3pm kick-offs in the Premier League.
12' RANGERS UP AGAINST IT
Villa are well on top at the moment and the Rangers defence is creaking. Bannan swings in a corner, but the home side manage to smuggle the ball clear.
9' GOAL: QPR 0 VILLA 1
Brett Holman gives Villa the lead with a powerful rising left-footed drive. Rob Green got a hand to it but was unable to keep it out.
8' BENTEKE SHOWS HIS POWER
Benteke shows great strength to hold the ball up down the left, but his left-foot shot does not trouble Green.
7' HERD IN FOR WEIMANN
Chris Herd got the start for Villa today ahead of Andreas Weimann, presumably because Paul Lambert wanted to add a bit more steel to his midfield.
5' VILLA RESPOND
Back come Villa. Agbonlahor outpaces the QPR defence but there is nobody in the box for the England man's pull-back.
4' RANGERS THREATEN
QPR seize the early initiative and a cross from the left is just out of reach of Adel Taarabt.
2' SEXTON REMEMBERED
There was a minute's applause for former QPR boss Dave Sexton before kick-off. Sexton, who died this week, managed the Rs from 1974 to 1977.
1' HERE WE GO
QPR get the match under way.
0' TEAM NEWS
Julio Cesar has failed a fitness test for QPR, so Robert Green starts in goal. Shaun Wright-Phillips is preferred to Djibril Cisse, who drops to the bench. Enda Stevens is ruled out by injury for Villa, so Eric Lichaj is drafted in and there is also a start for Chris Herd. Surprise, surprise, Darren Bent is on the bench.
0' TODAY'S TEAMS

0' PREVIEW
Harry Redknapp takes charge of his Queens Park Rangers side for the first time at home as the Hoops welcome fellow strugglers Aston Villa to Loftus Road. Redknapp got off to a solid start in midweek with a goalless draw at Sunderland, coming off the back of an impressive display in a defeat at Manchester United which he watched from the stands. Rangers have yet to win a game in the top-flight this season, but the former Spurs boss says that improving his side's home form will be key to their survival. “We have got to make Loftus Road a little bit like Portsmouth used to be,” Redknapp said. “We made that a tough place to go. It's the same type of stadium, a small stadium, intimidating and if we can show the fans that we are going to have a real go and they get behind us, then it can be a tough place to come.” It's been a more awkward last few days than it should have been for Villa boss Paul Lambert. His side scored a much-needed win over Reading in midweek that hauled them out of the relegation zone, but still he has had to repel countless questions from the media on why he is leaving England striker Darren Bent out of his squad, with youngter Jordan Bowery instead being given a place on the bench. Lambert denied some reports that Sunderland are due another £3 million should Bent play three more times and reach 50 league appearances. We're not saying doing some Christmas shopping might be a better idea than following this match with us, but it is the division's lowest scorers at home hosting the division's lowest scorers away from home, so there might not be a bagful of goals. With Harry, though, anything's possible. Today's game kicks off at 1500GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
There was speculation is some of the papers this week that Manchester United were lining up a £12 million bid for Queens Park Rangers' enigmatic forward Adel Taarabt. Harry Redknapp, however, is adamant the Moroccan is going nowhere and knows him well from his time at Tottenham. Redknapp actually sold Taarabt to Rangers, but said the decision to offload him was made by the chairman. He said: “He was alright with me, Adel. I think he has improved. His attitude is good and he has got bags of ability. I wouldn't have let him go, in all honesty - I said that at the time - I would have kept him at Tottenham.” Taarabt and Junior Hoilett have two goals each for Rangers, one behind leading scorer Bobby Zamora, who is out until February with a hip injury. Villa's leading marksman, Christian Benteke, also only has three goals to his name, but he scored an absolutely priceless winner against Reading in midweek and contributes so much more to Villa's game with his ability to hold the ball up and link up with the runs of their energetic forward-running midfielders.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
QPR have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 20 wins to 11 by Villa and nine games being drawn. At Loftus Road, Rangers have 13 wins to three by Villa, with a further four meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on Sep. 29 finished in a 1-1 draw. Barry Bannan put the visitors in front with a 58th-minute penalty, but a Richard Dunne own goal gave Rangers a point in an eventful last minute which also saw home defender Armand Traore dismissed for a second bookable offence. The two sides could not be separated in the return at Villa Park on Feb. 1 either. An early strike from Djibril Cisse (12 mins) and another own goal, this time from Stephen Warnock (28) put the visitors in charge, only for Villa to hit back and earn a 2-2 draw with goals from Darren Bent (45) and Charles N'Zogbia (79). Villa have yet to win at QPR in the Premier League, losing three and drawing twice. Their last win on this ground was a 1-0 triumph on Nov 2. 1991.
0' FORM GUIDE
QPR are the only side in the top four divisions yet to record a victory, though their goalless draw at Sunderland on Tuesday did end a run of three straight defeats. They have collected just five points from their 14 games and are not only the lowest scorers at home in the top flight with four goals, but the lowest overall with 10. Only Southampton have conceded more than their 26 goals. Villa beat Reading last time out, their first win in four. They have won just one game away from home, at Sunderland, and were hammered 5-0 at Manchester City in their last away outing. The Midlanders have collected 13 points from 14 games and sit one place above the relegation zone, a point better off than Southampton.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar is doubtful with the groin tear that forced him off at half-time of the goalless draw at Sunderland in midweek. Rob Green, as he did on Wednesday, will take over if necessary. Strikers Bobby Zamora (hip) and Andrew Johnson (knee) are on the long-term injury list. Villa's defensive injury woes continue, with left-back Enda Stevens ruled out with the ankle injury suffered during the midweek win over Reading. His place will likely go to the man who replaced him that night, Eric Lichaj. Centre-back Ron Vlaar is doubtful with the calf problem that saw him miss the last match, though there is some good news with Chris Herd available again after a knee injury.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
The man taking charge of today's game is the vastly-experienced Howard Webb MBE, the first referee to preside over both the Champions League and World Cup finals in the same season (2010). This is the 11th Premier League appointment of the season for the South Yorkshire whistleblower. He has produced 39 yellow cards in his previous ten outings and dismissed two players, Wigan's Jordi Gomez at Sunderland, an expulsion which saw an end to a run of 26 successive matches for Webb in all competitions without a red card, and most recently Tottenham's Emmanuel Adebayor in the North London derby at the Emirates. His assistants today are Mike Mullarkey and Darren Cann, while Mike Jones is the fourth official.
