Newcastle United vs. Wigan Athletic
Minute Commentary
90' NEWCASTLE 3 WIGAN 0
Newcastle end a run of four straight defeats with a convincing victory over a very capable Wigan side who had their task made terribly difficult when Maynor Figueroa saw red on 13 minutes. He pulled down Papiss Cisse as the striker ran through on goal and referee Mike Jones had no hesitation in awarding the penalty and dismissing Figueroa. Upon replay it certainly looked a soft penalty, with minimal contact sending Cisse down. Demba Ba converted with ease, hard and low to Ali Al Habsi's right, and then got his second of the night seven minutes later with a tap-in after Al Habsi failed to hold a Davide Santon piledriver. The home side then struggled to assert their numerical advantage and Wigan took the fight to them without really creating too many genuine openings. Ronnie Stam, Arouna Kone and Franco Di Santo all toiled away manfully but it was Newcastle who sealed the win twenty minutes from time. The goal of the night came from substitue Gael Bigirimana, whose first for the club since his move from Coventry in the summer was a stunning left-footed curler into the top corner from 30 yards out. Delight for Newcastle, who were still not at their best and lost Demba Ba late on to a hamstring strain. Roberto Martinez will rue their misfortune but will still take plenty of positives from his side's performance.
90' ALL OVER
Arouna Kone toils to the last with good feet in the area but then that's it. A very valuable three points for Newcastle United.
90' SOLID TOON
Ferguson finally picks someone out and Cisse tests Al Habsi from close range. Tim Krul, on the other hand, has been a relative spectator for long periods tonight. His defence have had an encouraging game and the whole side have looked like a more capable unit.
90' BA OFF
Demba Ba has gone off with a strained hamstring after that last attack so the sides are equal for the last few minutes. Another worry for Alan Pardew even though the victory is not in doubt.
86' FRONT TWO
Demba Ba hasn't abandoned hope of his hat-trick as he drops deep to try and make something happen. His pass doesn't reach Cisse, who once again hasn't looked the potent threat he did last season tonight. Having said that, the two of them spring the trap but Ba plays Cisse in when he's offside as a fourth goal looked inevitable.
82' WINDING DOWN
Shane Ferguson proves errant from the by-line once again with Cisse and Ba both lying in wait. An air of inevitability has crept over proceedings, though Wigan aren't giving up. Despite the result, Roberto Martinez will not be unhappy with his side's performance for much of the game.
79' ROUGH AND TUMBLE
Sammy Ameobi's first contribution having replaced Jonas Gutierrez is to pull back Stam and get a yellow card. James McCarthy responds with a tasty dive in on Anita and the crowd want action, but Mike Jones isn't forthcoming.
76' WIGAN RESPOND
Straight away it's the Stam-Kone combo looking to respond for Wigan though the big striker can't direct his header from the cross. Newcastle will remain in fourteenth place but pull three points clear of Roberto Martinez's side with this win.
72' GAEL FORCE
So there's no doubt about the result now. Gael Bigirimana's just thumped one into the top corner from just outside the area on the right. That was a strike of real class from the teenager and his first for Newcastle.
71' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Gael Bigirimana! What a beauty!
70' WHAT IF
So by no means a convincing display from the Magpies but they are holding on in the face of Wigan's willing and able ten men. They look the more likely to score do the Latics but we'll no doubt be left wondering what might have been in this game had Figueroa not departed so early.
67' LIVELY STUFF
Ronnie Stam fires in yet another good-looking centre which wasn't far from Di Santo before Newcastle attack in earnest and win a corner through Vurnon Anita. They can't find a head with it though and then a Wigan break is halted by a strong challenge on Di Santo from Ferguson.
63' AWAY BALL
Wigan are getting far more possession than you'd expect from a team with only ten men and the home crowd are becoming a little restless. An away goal would certainly give us an interesting final half-hour.
60' CISSE OFF-TARGET
Shane Ferguson's first contribution is a poor cross out of play but Vurnon Anita improves things with a fine pass over the top. Papiss Cisse traps it on his thigh and goes for glory from 30 yards but it's too high.
57' AROUNA-MATADA
Wigan continue to pursue a way back into the match and Arouna Kone's work-rate is admirable. He plays in Stam to whip in another dangerous ball before Marveaux once again beats a number of men. He teed up Gael Bigirimana and his ambitious shot was wasteful to say the least.
53' MARVEAUX-LOUS
Beautiful play from Sylvain Marveaux as Vurnon Anita slips him in and he jinks around five Wigan players to fire in a shot from just inside the area which unfortunately didn't match the calibre of the build-up play.
50' STAM-PEDE, SANT-OFF
Ronnie Stam is having another fine game and he beats two Newcastle players and puts the ball right across the face of goal, but there's no one on hand to steer it in. Newcastle make another change, this one enforced, as Shane Ferguson replaces the injured Davide Santon.
48' TACTICAL CHANGES
Cheik Tiote was in danger of his fifth yellow card this season whilst Caldwell almost got his second of the game late on in the first half so those swaps were tactical on the part of the two managers.
46' THE SECOND HALF BEGINS
We're back underway at St. James'. A change for each side at half-time. Gael Bigirimana replaces Cheik Tiote for Newcastle whilst Adrian Lopez is on for Gary Caldwell for Wigan.
45' NEWCASTLE IN POLE POSITION
An action-packed first half has put Newcastle well on their way to their first league win in five games thanks to a brace from Demba Ba. The Senegalese marksman struck from the spot on 13 minutes after Wigan had had their misery compounded by the sending off of Maynor Figueroa. He was adjudged to have been the last man when he pulled down Cisse, who was through on goal, and Ba made no mistake. Before Roberto Martinez could reorganise it was two. This time Davide Santon struck from distance, Ali Al Habsi spilled it and Ba mopped up from eight yards out. Needless to say, it's an uphill struggle for the Latics now, but they've equipped themselves well since the goals without necessarily troubling Tim Krul too much. Anything but a home win is unthinkable. Stranger things have happened though. Join us shortly for the restart...
45' HALF TIME
Cheik Tiote's third effort from distance does not suggest he is likely to add to his single goal for the club any time soon. That's it for the first half.
45' REARGUARD ACTION
Arouna Kone does brilliantly to win a corner for his side and the visitors continue to occupy sustained possession, but then James McCarthy 's cynical hack as Cisse strode forward begs the question how many men they will finish the game with.
42' FLUENT LATICS
Plucky Wigan continue to play nice passing football and will certainly have chances as the games goes on. Marveaux and Anita are distinguishing themselves for the Toon Army and have stifled the Latics to good effect.
38' CLOSE CALDWELL
Gary Caldwell is arguably very lucky to still be on the field after he slides in on Ba down in the corner and referee Jones certainly exercises some serious disgression to limit him to a talking-to. Marveaux bends the free-kick narrowly over before Cheik Tiote hammers another long-ranger just wide.
35' TRADING BLOWS
A Gutierrez cross finds Ba who almost pokes it over Al Habsi. Then Ronnie Stam fires in a fine cross which Coloccini has to prod away. Sylvain Marveaux breaks for the hosts, and Al Habsi tips his shot just past the post for a corner which Coloccini can't do anything with at the back post.
32' GOOD STUFF
Gary Caldwell picks up his fifth booking of the season so he will join Figueroa on the sidelines for their next game against QPR. It's still a compelling encounter as Wigan take the fight to a Newcastle side who are understandably finding gaps in the middle.
30' BACKS TO THE WALL
Quick feet and persistence see Franco Di Santo almost engineer an opening for himself. If there's any team that thrive on adersity it's this Wigan side. If they could nick one before the interval we might have a game on our hands.
26' BATON DOWN THE HATCHES
It's not often a team are considering damage limitation midway through the opening half but Figueroa's dismissal and a clinical home performance have arguably left Roberto Martinez with that prospect. Though they're gamely giving it a go, Newcastle don't look in the mood to surrender this commanding position.
22' DEMBA TWO! WIGAN SUNK?
Here comes James McArthur for Wigan in place of Jordi Gomez as Wigan restructure, but is it all too little too late? Davide Santon powered in a venemous 30-yard swerving strike which Al Habsi couldn't hold and there was Ba to net his second of the night with only 20 minutes gone.
21' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's two for Ba!
18' FRENETIC OPENING
Ba lofts a shot high over the bar from 30 yards out before Mike Williamson puts Fabricio Coloccini in all sorts of trouble at the back, but Di Santo and Kone can't capitalise and Simpson clears the danger. Quite a start here on Tyneside.
16' NEWCASTLE LEAD
So Newcastle have the lead and a man advantage already. Ba slipped Cisse in on goal and Figueroa barged him down. He was the last man and the referee obviously felt he had no choice but to brandish the red card. The home crowd are in raptures and Wigan have an awfully difficult task on their hands now.
14' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Demba Ba, no mistake! Bottom left-hand corner, no chance for Al Habsi.
12' SPOT KICK! RED CARD!
Maynor Figueroa brings Papiss Cisse down in the area and the referee points to the spot! Figueroa is off too!
12' MIDDLE CRUCIAL
It's one victory in nine but St. James' Park is still packed to the rafters as always. A lot rides on the new boy Vurnon Anita and Sylvain Marveaux to step up to the plate in midfield tonight.
9' CHANCES ALREADY
Good early pressure for Wigan but Newcastle go up the other end to win a corner themselves. A fine attacking start to the game with Demba Ba forcing the visitors to scramble the ball away on the penalty spot from the set piece.
6' WIGAN RESPOND
This time it's Franco Di Santo curling an effort towards Tim Krul's bottom left corner for Wigan and the Dutchman has to palm it out for a corner which Newcastle clear. Then the Latics win a free-kick and Vurnon Anita is on hand to head it over his own bar.
4' TIOTE PILEDRIVER
Immediately Cheik Tiote fizzs a 40-yard strike past Ali Al Habsi's right-hand post. That wasn't far away at all.
1' HERE WE GO
Referee Mike Jones from Cheshire gets the game underway with Newcastle United in their traditional black and white while Wigan don their red away strip.
0' FORWARD THINKING
So the opposing managers have both picked attacking line-ups, with Newcastle likely to return to last season's preferred 4-3-3, having recently experimented unsuccessfully with two up front. Jonas Gutierrez will join Ba and Cisse in attack. Wigan field three out and out attackers, with Franco Di Santo and Arouna Kone joined by Jordi Gomez. Let's hope we get some goals.
0' THE SIDES
Here are tonight's line-ups...Newcastle: Krul, Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon, Marveaux, Tiote, Anita, Gutierrez, Ba, Cisse. Subs: Harper, Bigirimana, Shola Ameobi, Sammy Ameobi, Ranger, Ferguson, Tavernier. Wigan: Al Habsi, Stam, Boyce, Caldwell, Figueroa, Gomez, Jones, McCarthy, Beausejour, Di Santo, Kone. Subs: Pollitt, McManaman, McArthur, Boselli, Fyvie, Lopez, Golobart.
0' ALL'S WELL FOR THE LATICS
Wigan's most valuable player stands on the touchline most of the time. Roberto Martinez's unremarkable squad are yet again making a mockery of the odds with some fine showings so far this season. They looked the better sides for long spells of the game last week against Man. City before cruelly going down 1-0. Antolin Alacarez, Ivan Ramis and Shaun Maloney are all doubtful tonight. Serious injuries, particularly up-front, could hurt their paper thin squad as the season goes on, though they've had impressive cover from the likes of Ronnie Stam in recent games. Arouna Kone has been the Latics star man this year with a succession of dynamic centre forward performances. He'll be hoping to add to his tally of four goals.
0' OUT OF TOON
It's doubtful that chairman Mike Ashley is yet becoming nervous about perhaps having to dig deep and shell out the handsome compensation it would require to relieve Alan Pardew of the eight-year contract he signed at the start of the season, but it goes without the saying that the Magpies need to start winning very soon. They're without a victory in five games, including losses to newly-promoted West Ham and Southampton, and the spiritless surrender of a two-goal lead to Stoke last Tuesday. Injuries are unquestionably a factor, along with the addition of competing in Europe. Yohan Cabaye, Shola Ameobi, Steven Taylor and Hatem Ben Arfa will all miss tonight's encounter, the latter pair absent for at least a couple more months. Relegation will not be an issue for their talented side, but how long they can hang on to their many coveted talents in the face of an unsuccessful season will be a worry for the Tyneside faithful.
0' PREVIEW: NEWCASTLE UNITED VS. WIGAN ATHLETIC
Tonight's clash might well have been considered a relative formality last season, but the two clubs have experienced contrasting fortunes since Newcastle romped to a Europa League spot and Wigan narrowly avoided relegation. Alan Pardew's men have been hit hard by injuries this term and look far from the stylish, free-scoring side they were, languishing in 14th, level on points with the Latics. Roberto Martinez continues to work wonders on a budget at Wigan. They were many people's tip for the drop back in August, but, despite losing Victor Moses and Hugo Rodallega, they've continued the fine form that dragged them out of the drop zone at the death last season. That run of seven wins out of nine included a 4-0 thrashing of the Magpies at the DW in April. Moses bagged a pair that night, and Shaun Maloney and Franco Di Santo ensured the game was sewn up by half-time. Newcastle ran out winners in the corresponding fixture though, Yohan Cabaye scoring the solitary goal.
