Manchester City vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: MAN CITY 2 MAN UTD 3
A goal from Robin van Persie three minutes into stoppage time wins United a pulsating Manchester derby after the home side had hit back from two goals down at the break to seemingly snatch a point. The Dutchman saw his free-kick deflect off Samir Nasri in the wall and find the corner of the net. The game, though, was marred by crowd trouble at the end, with Rio Ferdinand suffering a facial wound after being hit by a missile thrown from the crowd. Pablo Zabaleta had netted what looked to be a crucial equaliser four minutes from time. The Argentina defender drilled home a low shot after United had failed to deal with a left-wing corner, Yaya Toure having pulled one back on the hour. City started promisingly, but they were left chasing the game after being caught on the break by Wayne Rooney's 16th-minute opener. The England striker collected a pass from the left from Ashley Young and although his low drive was not hit sweetly, it was perfectly placed just inside the post. Rooney became United's all-time leading scorer in Manchester derbies with his tenth in this fixture on 29 minutes, sweeping home a Rafael cross from the left for a goal which was also his 150th in the Premier League. City had lost captain Vincent Kompany through injury between United's two goals, but they rarely looked like fighting their way back into the match until Roberto Mancini replaced the disappointing Mario Balotelli with Carlos Tevez. They were then transformed. City pulled one back on the hour through Yaya Toure after David De Gea had saved brilliantly from Tevez and David Silva. It was a breathless last half-hour, which saw van Persie hit the inside of a post and Ashley Young wrongly have a goal ruled out for offside at one end and David Silva hit the woodwork from point-blank range, via De Gea's shoulder, at the other. RVP, though, had the final word.
90' CROWD TROUBLE
Rio Ferdinand has been hit by a missile thrown from the crowd and has a facial injury. Disgraceful. City will be in trouble for that.
90' GOAL: MAN CITY 2 MAN UTD 3
Robin van Persie has won this game with a deflected free-kick two minutes into stoppage time. Incredible!
90' PILING ON THE PRESSURE
Silva drills a low shot, but De Gea is right behind it. Four minutes of added time. Tevez shoots low, but De Gea is there again.
90' CITY BOOKING
Tevez protests a decision and is booked for dissent.
88' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
Tom Cleverley makes way for Danny Welbeck for United. Sir Alex is going for it again.
87' GOAL DETAILS
City are level. A Silva corner from the left was only half-cleared and Zabaleta drilled a low shot through a ruck of players into the net.
86' GOAL: MAN CITY 2 MAN UTD 2
Pablo Zabaleta levels for City!
85' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
United respond with a switch of their own, Phil Jones coming on to play in central midfield and Antonio Valencia making way.
83' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Tevez shoots over from 14 yards and City then make another switch, with Edin Dzeko replacing Yaya Toure.
80' OFF THE WOODWORK
City break and Nasri finds Silva, who cuts inside Evra. His shot from five yards hits De Gea on the shoulder and deflects to safety off the woodwork.
78' BAD MISS FROM BAN PERSIE
Cleverley delivers a fine cross from the left, but van Persie, in an unmarked position, heads high and wide from ten yards.
76' CITY BOOKING
Kolo Toure scoops a shot wide from a City free-kick, but is mightily relieved in a way to see that the flag had gone up for offside, so it wouldn't have counted anyway. Yaya Toure is then booked for a late tackle on Cleverley and is left in some discomfort himself.
74' UNITED BOOKING
Rooney is booked for a foul on Yaya Toure. City's bench and the home fans are furious that the Ivory Coast midfielder was not allowed to continue as he had got clear down the left.
71' EVRA HEADS WIDE
Rooney goes over to the left to take a corner and draws the attention of the referee to an object thrown from the crowd. When the ball is delivered Evra spurns a glorious chance, heading wide from six yards.
70' PASSING UP A PENALTY CHANCE
City break at pace, with Aguero finding Tevez. The City striker could have gone down looking for a penalty after contact by Evra, but stays on his feet and the chance is gone. Roberto Mancini is furious with his player for not falling to the floor.
68' UNITED BOOKING
Sorry, it's so frantic at the moment we missed the fact that Rio Ferdinand was shown the yellow card a couple of minutes ago for a high tackle on Tevez.
65' PENALTY CLAIMS
United want a penalty after an apparent bodycheck from Kolo Toure on Patrice Evra. Mr Atkinson again waves play on. Having seen the replays that should have been a spot-kick.
63' ONE RECORD INTACT
That goal at least keeps alive one City record. They have now netted in their last 50 home games in the top flight.
61' GOAL DETAILS
It's so unlucky for David De Gea, who made brilliant saves to deny Tevez and Silva, but could do nothing when Tevez pulled the ball back for Toure, who slotted into the corner.
60' GOAL: MAN CITY 1 MAN UTD 2
Yaya Toure pulls one back for City.
59' RVP HITS THE POST
Robin van Persie sees his right-foot curler from the edge of the box come back off the post. Ashley Young has the ball in the net, but the flag is up for offside. Replays show the goal should have been allowed to stand.
59' FINE DEFENDING FROM FERDINAND
Ferdinand does magnificently to stretch at the back post to get his toe to a Nasri cross from the right just before Aguero.
58' AGUERO SHOOTS WIDE
City break swiftly down the left through Clichy. Aguero collects the ball, but his curling effort is comfortably wide of the upright.
55' CITY BOOKING
Samir Nasri is booked for dissent, he's been chuntering over an earlier offside decision.
52' CITY SUBSTITUTION
There's the change, with Tevez replacing Balotelli, who still has only one goal to his credit in the Premier League this season. Cleverley blasts over in the meantime.
51' TEVEZ READY FOR ACTION
Roberto Mancini is exasperated with Balotelli. He's called for Tevez to get stripped for action.
50' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
There's another injury worry to a United defender as Rio Ferdinand has tweaked his knee a little. Evans makes way for Smalling, Rio will be fine to continue.
48' CHANGE IN THE OFFING
Jonny Evans is still struggling with that injury. Chris Smalling is getting ready to come on for the visitors.
47' GROANS ALL ROUND
City win an early corner, but David Silva fails to beat the first defender with a disappointing delivery. It's indicative of how this game has gone.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
City kick off the second half. Neither side has made changes at the break.
45' HT: MAN CITY 0 MAN UTD 2
United are coasting at the interval with a cushion given them by two goals from Wayne Rooney on 16 and 29 minutes. The first strike was totally against the run of play after City had bossed the opening quarter of an hour. United broke swiftly down the left and Young found his England team-mate, who produced a perfectly-placed low shot into the corner. The second came from the other flank, Antonio Valencia and Rafael combining well with the Brazilian producing a fine cross and Rooney doing the rest with a sweet first-time finish. City had their chances early on, Mario Balotelli forcing David De Gea into a save with a low free-kick and blasting over from an excellent position. But they lost their captain Vincent Kompany early on with an injury and they need a miracle to get something from this game.
45' UNCONVINCING PENALTY CLAIMS
Aguero goes down hopefully looking for a penalty, but Mr Atkinson is right to wave play on. That was more desperation than anything from the City frontman. Two added minutes.
43' BARRY SHOOTS WIDE
Silva's ball across the edge of the area falls to the wrong man, as Gareth Barry slides a disappointing shot well wide of the post.
42' SHOT CHARGED DOWN
United threaten again, but Van Persie sees his shot charged down by Zabaleta.
38' FERGIE'S FAITH JUSTIFIED
It was a little bit of a surprise that Rafael was preferred at right-back for United ahead of Chris Smalling. The Brazilian was dreadful at Reading last weekend and it would have come as no surprise to hear that he had been frozen out after his petulant reaction after being taken off in the first half. He has been solid today, though, and has an assist to his name.
36' UNSTEADY AT THE BACK
There's a nerviness about City in defence at present. You feel United could have a hatful this afternoon if they go for the jugular. And you can bet Fergie will mention last season's 6-1 drubbing at Old Trafford at the break and urge his side to keep going for more.
33' DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN
This is reminiscent of the FA Cup game between the sides in January in which United swept into a three-goal lead. City on that day were reduced to ten-men early on with the sending-off of Vincent Kompany, who is no longer on the pitch today for different reasons. Rooney scored two that day as well.
30' GOAL DETAILS
Antonio Valencia and Rafael worked an overload down the right and the Brazilian's low cross was perfect for Rooney, who swept a first-time shot through the legs of Kolo Toure into the corner.
29' GOAL: MAN CITY 0 MAN UTD 2
United are in dreamland - Rooney scores again!
28' YAYA ESCAPES
Mr Atkinson is being very lenient today. Yaya Toure throws himself to the ground looking for a cheap free-kick. It was a clear dive, but the referee refuses to brandish the yellow card.
26' THE HISTORY MAN
Wayne Rooney's goal means he has matched Sir Bobby Charlton's record of nine goals for United in Manchester derbies in all competitions. City have two players who have managed ten goals against United - Franny Lee and Joe Hayes.
24' TAME FROM AGUERO
Aguero bustles his way through a succession of tackles on the edge of the United box, but his finish is tame and easy for De Gea to gather low to his left.
23' YOUNG NOT FAR AWAY
Rooney lifts a glorious early pass ahead for Young, who had sprung the offside trap, but Hart is alert to the threat and races off his line to boot the ball away in the nick of time.
22' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Kompany's day is done and he makes way for Kolo Toure. It appears to be a groin injury for the Belgian. Advantage United.
20' KOMPANY STRUGGLING TOO
Vincent Kompany is struggling for City and looks like he will have to go off. This would be a big blow to the home side.
19' EVANS IS STRUGGLING
Chris Smalling is warming up on the sidelines, United are worried about Evans following that earlier foul tackle by Balotelli.
17' GOAL DETAILS
The Etihad is silenced with a goal totally against the run of play. Young made ground down the left and found Rooney, who took his shot early and watched as it trickled into the corner. Hart was left powerless, it was so perfectly placed just inside the post.
16' GOAL: MAN CITY 0 MAN UTD 1
Wayne Rooney gives United the lead out of nothing!
15' CITY BOSSING OPENING EXCHANGES
This has been a fantastic opening by City, they have been all over United in the opening quarter of an hour.
14' ESCAPE FOR BALOTELLI
Evans needs treatment after a horrible late tackle by Balotelli. How that is not a booking is beyond me.
13' BALOTELLI BLASTS OVER
City create a real chance. Silva finds Clichy down the left on the overlap. The Frenchman delivers an excellent ball into the box, but Balotelli volleys well over the bar from 14 yards. That was a great opening.
11' CELEBRITIES ON PARADE
Among the celebrities here at the Etihad Stadium today are film stars Robert Duval and Tom Cruise, who are in the UK promoting their latest movie, Jack Reacher.
10' GO AND DO A JOB FOR ME
Sir Alex has named exactly the same starting line-up that did such an impressive job for him at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season.
9' OTHERWISE ENGAGED
Anders Lindegaard is not available today, not because of his dodgy display at Reading last weekend, but because his wife has gone into labour. Let's hope he's not being asked to deliver the baby, you need steady hands for that job!
7' SAVE BY DE GEA
Valencia goes down after a tackle from Clichy and then United are furious after Ferdinand is penalised for a foul on Aguero. It's a free-kick for City in a promising position, and Balotelli's low drive is turned round the post by De Gea.
4' ROONEY WALKING A TIGHTROPE
Boy, what an atmosphere there is inside the Etihad this afternoon. Rooney tests Mr Atkinson's patience after two quick fouls on Silva and Yaya Toure. The referee keeps his cards in his pocket.
2' AGUERO GOES DOWN
Aguero goes down after a scything early tackle near the half-way line, but he gets back on his feet when he sees no free-kick is forthcoming.
1' HERE WE GO
United kick off, attacking the goal to our left.
0' TEAM NEWS
The good news for Manchester City is that David Silva is fit after a hamstring injury and starts. The surprising call from Roberto Mancini comes with the inclusion of Mario Balotelli, who has been given the nod to start alongside Sergio Aguero. Tom Cleverley has passed a fitness test for United and starts. David De Gea is selected ahead of Anders Lindegaard in goal and Rafael gets a vote of confidence despite his struggles at Reading last weekend which led to his early substitution. Antonio Valencia was supposed to have been ruled out by a hip injury, so it will be interesting to see if the Ecuador international uses crutches to help him get up and down the right side of midfield.
0' UNITED STARTING LINE-UP
De Gea, Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Cleverley, Young, Rooney, Van Persie.
0' CITY STARTING LINE-UP
Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy, Silva, Barry, Yaya Toure, Nasri, Balotelli, Aguero.
0' PREVIEW
If the barbs that have been traded off the pitch in the past couple of days are matched by the football played on it, then Sunday's Manchester derby between City and United at the Etihad should be a classic. Wily old Sir Alex Ferguson put pressure on referee Martin Atkinson in his pre-match press conference suggesting that he was incredulous at the amount of penalties City were awarded in front of their own fans. Rival manager Roberto Mancini responded by stopping just an inward three-and-a-half somersault with pike short of comparing United's Ashley Young's antics in the penalty area to those of Tom Daley in the Olympic pool. It's been 210 days since United walked off the field at the Stadium of Light believing they had done enough to lift their 20th league title, only for Sergio Aguero to wrest it away from them with his winner against Queens Park Rangers deep into stoppage time. That it was the noisy neighbours who had the gall to do this to United only made the pain greater. You can bet Sir Alex has been waiting for this day ever since this season's fixtures were revealed – he has probably been counting down the seconds. The Red Devils were only denied the championship last term on goal difference, so they can look at the two defeats they suffered at the hands of City to be a huge contributory factor in their demise. The visitors can open up a six-point lead at the top of the table with a victory, a result that would leave Mancini's managerial tenure hanging by a thread after his side's elimination from European competition this side of Christmas. Today's game kicks off at 1330GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
The big question for City fans is who will Mancini start up front? Will it be Carlos Tevez, whose capture from United started this great rivalry and who will be desperate to put one over his former employers again? Or Sergio Aguero, their title winner and Mancini's undoubted first choice? Edin Dzeko has seen more starts in recent weeks, but seems to do his best work from the bench, while Mario Balotelli is undoubted fourth choice among the striking quartet but did net twice against United at Old Trafford last season. Robin van Persie's decision to join United rather than City in the summer could well end up deciding the destiny of this season's title. The former Arsenal man already has 10 goals to his credit in the Premier League, but is hungry for more. “I am not satisfied,” RVP told MUTV this week. “If you look at the stats, 13 goals in 19 games [in all competitions], it is OK. But I want better and more. I want more goals, more assists. I want to go for everything that it is possible this year.” The Dutchman trails Swansea's Michu by two in the race for the Golden Boot after the prolific Spaniard netted twice for the second game in a row yesterday.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 58 wins to 39 by City and 49 games being drawn. At the Etihad and Maine Road before it, United have 26 wins to 23 by City, with a further 24 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on April 30 was in effect a title decider. City won it 1-0 with a goal on the stroke of half-time by captain Vincent Kompany. It was a poor match, in truth, with United unable to muster a single shot on target. The earlier meeting between the sides on Oct. 23 at Old Trafford, conversely, was a match for the ages. City won it 6-1, Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko both helping themselves to two goals and United defender Jonny Evans seeing red at the start of the second half.
0' FORM GUIDE
City start the day three points behind United despite being the only unbeaten team remaining in England 15 games into the season. United have won the last three since the shock defeat at Norwich on Nov. 17, but they looked incredibly shaky at the back in their last outing, which saw them secure a memorable 4-3 triumph at Reading, with all the goals coming in the first half. City drew at home with Everton last time out, and it was the Toffees who inflicted their last home defeat in the league, a 2-1 triumph all the way back on Dec. 20, 2010.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
City are hopeful that David Silva and James Milner (both hamstring) and Gael Clichy (ankle) will be available for selection. The return of Silva would give them the biggest lift, while Yaya Toure is certain to return in midfield after being suspended for the midweek Champions League trip to Dortmund. Aleksandar Kolarov (ankle) is definitely out and Micah Richards (knee) is no nearer a return. Tom Cleverley is a doubt for United with a calf injury but has more chance of playing than Anderson, who has been bothered by a hamstring problem. Antonio Valencia (hip) and Nani (hamstring) are definitely out, while Shinji Kagawa and skipper Nemanja Vidic (both knee) are unlikely to figure unless Sir Alex decides to take a gamble on the fitness of his captain.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Martin Atkinson, who has been a member of the Premier League's elite group of referees since 2005 and who became a FIFA referee a year later. The West Yorkshire-based official showed nine red cards last season, by far the most of any Premier League referee. Four of those dismissals came in his first seven Premier League games, though Atkinson has made a slow start this time around with Newcastle's Cheick Tiote at Sunderland his only sending off to date in 12 Premier League outings. Sir Alex was handed a five-match touchline ban and fined £30,000 by the Football Association for his comments about Atkinson following United's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in March, when the official allowed David Luiz to escape a sending off for tackles on Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney and awarded Chelsea a controversial late penalty which was converted by Frank Lampard. “I must say, when I saw who the referee was I feared it. I feared the worst,” was one of Fergie's famous post-match remarks that landed him in hot water. Atkinson's assistants today are Peter Kirkup and Stuart Burt, while Mark Clattenburg is the fourth official.
