Fulham vs. Newcastle United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: FULHAM 2 NEWCASTLE 1
Newcastle are left still looking for an away victory as Fulham edge a thrilling contest at Craven Cottage to collect their first win in seven thanks to Hugo Rodellega's header just after the hour. It was a terrific, end-to-end game which the home side will feel they just about deserved to win. Fulham were well on top for much of the first half, with Steve Sidwell giving them a 19th-minute lead and Dimitar Berbatov twice being denied by Tim Krul. Fabricio Coloccini and Demba Ba both had efforts cleared off the line by Sascha Riether for the visitors before Hatem Ben Arfa netted a 54th-minute equaliser through another deflected long-range effort, this one taking a nick off John Arne Riise. It was anyone's game after that as both teams pushed for the win. The winner came from Rodallega, who escaped his man to head home a right-wing free-kick from Damien Duff. Newcastle never gave up, with Coloccini's wonderful curling effort coming back off the woodwork and Mark Schwarzer making a number of crucial late saves.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
We are into four minutes of added time.
90' BA HEADS WIDE
Gutierrez crosses from the left and Ba gets ahead of his man but heads wide from ten yards.
89' PETRIC GOES CLOSE
Petric is not far away with a fierce strike that whistles just wide of the left-hand post.
88' BERBATOV DENIED
Fulham are still pushing for more goals and Krul makes a sprawling save to deny Berbatov.
86' CHANGES ALL ROUND
Alan Pardew makes a double switch, with Marveaux and Bigirimana replacing Tiote and Anita. Mladen Petric replaces Hugo Rodallega for Fulham.
84' FINE SAVE FROM SCHWARZER
Schwarzer makes a good save moments later to keep out a good low strike from Ba.
83' SCUFFED EFFORT
Fulham's defence parts and Ameobi tries his luck from 25 yards. The effort is scuffed, and easy for Schwarzer to deal with.
79' WHAT A WASTE
Newcastle win a free-kick 25 yards from goal, but Santon drives a disappointing effort straight into the wall.
76' SIMPSON A RELIEVED MAN
A Simpson defensive blunder could have proved costly, but the Newcastle man is relieved to see Sidwell balloon a shot over the crossbar.
75' QUIZ ANSWER
Regarding the earlier Gael Bigirimana quiz question posed a moment ago. We were joking! List them yourself, on the back of a postage stamp, if you're that sad!
74' QUIZ TIME AGAIN
Burundi-born Gael Bigirimana (who is on the Newcastle bench tonight) became the 89th different nationality to score a goal in the Premier League last Monday with his stunner against Wigan. Name the other 88 countries who have provided a top-flight scorer. Answer in a moment.
72' OFF THE WOODWORK
Fabricio Coloccini produces a stunning, curling effort from the edge of box which crashes back off the post with Schwarzer beaten. Krul saves a tame effort from Rodallega at the other end.
71' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Newcastle make their first change, with Shola Ameobi replacing goal-scorer Hatem Ben Arfa.
70' COMEBACK KINGS? NO!
Apparently it's six years and four days since Newcastle last came from a goal down to win a Premier League game. They trailed Reading 2-1 at St James' Park on Dec. 6, 2006 and came back to win 3-2 with Turkey midfielder Emre getting the winner.
67' OFF THE POST, BUT OFFSIDE
Tiote puts in Cisse down the inside-left channel and his thumping strike crashes back off the post. The Newcastle frontman was just offside, though, and the effort would not have counted had it gone in.
64' GOAL DETAILS
The goal came from a Damien Duff free-kick on the right. It was perfectly delivered and the Colombian powered a header past Krul, who was left exposed and totally powerless to do anything about it.
63' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 2 FULHAM 1
Hugo Rodallega heads Fulham back in front.
62' NOT SO MUCH OF A WONDER GOAL
Having seen a replay of that goal from Ben Arfa, it did take a little nick off the outstretched right foot of Riise that totally changed the trajectory of the ball. No question it's the Frenchman's goal, though. In the meantime, Kacaniklic half-volleys over the bar after a chest pass from Rodallega.
61' FULHAM SUBSTITUTION
Fulham make the first switch, Ashkan Dejagah replacing Kacaniklic.
60' FINE SAVE BY KRUL
Fulham hit back and after Simpson gives the ball away Berbatov feeds a pass through to Sidwell. The former Reading man only has the goalkeeper to beat, but Krul does well again.
58' WRONG OPTION FROM BA
Newcastle engineer a three-on-three break, but Demba Ba opts for the wrong option, trying a long-range shot that is tamely struck and easy for Schwarzer to smother.
56' GOAL DETAILS
It's a goal out of nothing. The Frenchman was on the right edge of the box and cut inside his man before lashing a fierce shot that went in off the underside of the bar, catching Schwarzer totally unawares. It might have taken a slight deflection off a Fulham defender, to be fair to the goalkeeper.
55' GOAL: FULHAM 1 NEWCASTLE 1
Hatem Ben Arfa has just netted a stunning goal and Newcastle are level!
52' QUIZ ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who scored the Newcastle winner the last time they won at Craven Cottage. It was no other than everyone's favourite Tweeter, Joey Barton. https://twitter.com/Joey7Barton
50' AMBITIOUS FROM BERBATOV
Fulham have men over here, but after skinning Tiote, Berbatov tries a rather audacious and selfish shot from a narrow angle that not surprisingly finds the side-netting.
48' ANITA ONLY JUST OVER
Newcastle make a lively start to the second half and Cisse tees up Anita, whose piledriver is only just over the bar from 25 yards.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Newcastle get the second half under way.
45' HT: FULHAM 1 NEWCASTLE 0
Fulham have the lead at the break and it's an advantage they thoroughly deserve. After an even start to the match they really got a stranglehold in midfield and Hugo Rodallega volleyed over before they took the lead on 19 minutes via a shot from Steve Sidwell that looped in off the luckless Mike Williamson. The home side twice came close to doubling their lead through Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian got clean through but was denied by an excellent save from Tim Krul and then a combination of the Newcastle goalkeeper and Danny Simpson kept out his close-range effort. The visitors have threatened sporadically and twice went close from corners, a Fabricio Coloccini header and Demba Ba shot both being cleared off the line by Sascha Riether. This game is far from over, the Toon finished the half strongly.
45' OFF THE LINE AGAIN
The visitors threaten again from a corner, with Ba's effort from beyond the far post blocked by Riether on the line.
42' SHOT DEFLECTED WIDE
Newcastle break quickly, but rather than picking out a better-placed team-mate, Gutierrez tries an ambitious long-range effort which is deflected to safety off Hangeland.
40' IT'S QUIZ TIME AGAIN
Who scored the Newcastle winner the last time they won at Craven Cottage in January 2007? We'll give you half-time to come up with the answer and let you know if you're right early in the second half.
37' TOO HIGH FROM RIISE
Fulham have bossed this first half and Sidwell finds Riise on the overlap down the left. The Norwegian pulls the trigger from 25 yards, but his shot clears the bar.
33' OFF THE LINE AT THE OTHER END
Now Newcastle go very close to finding an equaliser. Coloccini meets a right-wing corner with a towering header which is nodded off the line by Riether with Schwarzer beaten.
31' OFF THE LINE
Fulham are rampant here and go close to a second. Krul can only palm out Riether's cross from the right and Berbatov, with the goal at his mercy eight yards out, shoots low. The ball is kept out by a combination of Krul and Simpson on the line.
27' DIMITAR THE DANGER
Alan Pardew was right to pick out Dimitar Berbatov before the match as a man to fear. True Sidwell got the goal, but rhe Bulgarian with the silky skills looks in the mood tonight and has scored three goals in six career starts against Newcastle.
24' DO NOT ADJUST YOUR SET
The Fulham goal drought is over! By my reckoning it's their first goal in 317 minutes of football. The Cottagers have also avoided an unwanted record. Had they failed to score tonight, it would have been their longest run without a top-flight goal in 51 years.
21' BERBATOV DENIED
Fulham look very dangerous from set-pieces. Hughes meets Duff's right-wing corner with a firm header which hits a Newcastle defender. It's a lively start.
20' GOAL DETAIlS
Duff won the ball on the right edge of the area and found Sidwell, whose tame effort hit Mike Williamson on the thigh and looped over Tim Krul. That was more than a little lucky!
19' GOAL: FULHAM 1 NEWCASTLE 0
Steven Sidwell nets the opener for Fulham.
18' OVER FROM RODALLEGA
Fulham create the best opening of the match so far. Duff drops a ball into the box and Rodallega chests down well, but is off balance as he hits a volley and it soars into the stands.
17' TOON GETTING CLOSER
Newcastle win the ball back after a dreadful clearance, but Cisse's cross just fails to pick out Ba.
16' DISAPPOINTING EFFORT
A brilliant 50-yard crossfield pass from Ben Arfa sets up a Newcastle break, but it ends with a disappointingly tame shot from long range by Cisse.
14' JONAS GOES DOWN
Gutierrez is in a lot of pain after being caught by a high challenge by Berbatov. There was no malice in that from the Bulgarian and Jonas gets gingerly to his feet.
12' QUIZ ANSWER
Earlier we asked you who was the last English-born player to score for Newcastle in the Premier League. It was Danny Guthrie, against Fulham, on Jan. 21.
9' IT'S QUIZ TIME
The last 43 Premier League goals scored by Newcastle players have been netted by players born outside England (not including own goals). Who was the last English-born player to score for the Magpies and who were their opponents? Answer in a few minutes.
7' SET-PIECE MENACE
Fulham look very dangerous from set-pieces. Hughes meets Duff's right-wing corner with a firm header which hits a Newcastle defender. It's a lively start.
4' HEADER OVER BY WILLIAMSON
Newcastle hit straight back and Williamson rises well, but his header goes over by some distance.
3' NEVER A PENALTY
Fulham threaten again. Kacaniklic goes down looking for a penalty after contact by Coloccini but referee Mason is uninterested.
2' FULHAM ON THE ATTACK
Fulham are straight on the attack and Duff almost picks out Berbatov with a fine cross to the far post. Williamson makes an important clearing header.
1' HERE WE GO
Fulham kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' PREVIEW
Having got back on the winning trail a week ago, Newcastle travel to Fulham for another Monday night engagement looking for their first away victory of the season. It's a battle between two sides whose form has dipped worryingly over the last couple of months. Fulham are currently bottom of the Premier League's form table, a position Newcastle occupied until the much-needed win over Wigan last time out. That victory, their first in six games, papered over the cracks somewhat as the controversial early sending off of Maynor Figueroa effectively decided the outcome. In truth, it's hard to get worked up about a match featuring a side who have failed to score in their last three games and another who have seven away goals in seven games. But both sides definitely need the points. Should Sunderland win their home game in hand against Reading tomorrow night, whichever team loses this evening will find themselves just two points above the relegation zone. And with three of their next four games against Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal and the impending departure of influential midfielder Cheick Tiote for the African Nations Cup, that outcome doesn't bare thinking about for Alan Pardew's men in particular. Hopefully the desperation for victory will prevail over the fear of defeat and these two teams will serve us up a classic. Tonight's game kicks off at 2000GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Much has been made of Fulham's inability to score, but just as important is the return of Brede Hangeland in the centre of their defence tonight. The big Norwegian hasn't been quite as impressive this campaign as he was last, but objective number one must be to stop Newcastle scoring. Fulham have conceded two or more goals in five of their last seven outings; you're not going to win many games with a defensive record like that. The visitors could welcome back Hatem Ben Arfa tonight after a hamstring problem and Newcastle look a far more potent force when the Frenchman is in their line-up. As for the Cottagers, United manager Alan Pardew has no doubts who represents the biggest threat. “Their outstanding player is [Dimitar] Berbatov,” he said. “He's been terrific, and we're going to need to make sure he doesn't have a big influence on the game.” Berba has five goals and three assists to his name. Newcastle's leading scorer is Demba Ba, who has ten goals, including two last time out against Wigan.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Fulham have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 25 wins to 20 by Newcastle and 13 games being drawn. At Craven Cottage, Fulham have 17 wins to seven by the Magpies, with a further five meetings ending up all square. Fulham thrashed the Toon 5-2 in the corresponding match last season on January 21. All five goals came from players no longer at the club, with Clint Dempsey (now of Tottenham) netting a hat-trick and Danny Murphy (Blackburn) and Bobby Zamora (QPR) both converting penalties. That result avenged an earlier 2-1 defeat for Fulham at St James' Park in the opening month of the season with Leon Best (also now Blackburn) scoring twice for the home side.
0' FORM GUIDE
Fulham start the night in 13th place, with 17 points from 15 games, immediately ahead of Newcastle (who have an identical won 4 drawn 5 lost 6 record) by nature of their three-goal superior goal difference. Fulham have failed to win any of their last seven following a 1-0 home victory over Aston Villa on Oct. 20 and have failed to score in 298 minutes of football. Newcastle's home win over Wigan last time out halted a run of four successive defeats, but they are one of just three teams yet to win away from home in the Premier League. The other two clubs, Reading and Queens Park Rangers, occupy the bottom two spots in the division.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Fulham will be delighted to have captain Brede Hangeland available again after a three-match suspension and Alex Kacaniklic is also fit to return after a hamstring injury. Bryan Ruiz (hamstring) is out for another month and Sascha Riether (knee) is doubtful. Alan Pardew refused to reveal how many of his walking wounded had recovered from minor knocks, but expect returns for several among David Santon (groin), Demba Ba, Cheick Tiote and Hatem Ben Arfa (all hamstring), Jonas Gutierrez (knee) and Gabriel Obertan (toe). Steven Taylor (hamstring) and Yohan Cabaye (groin surgery) are on the long-term injury list.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of tonight's game is Lee Mason, who has been a member of the elite panel of Premier League referees since 2006. The man from Lancashire has yet to show a red card in nine Premier League outings this season and has produced just 29 yellow cards. Since giving Everton's Mikel Arteta and West Brom's Youssouf Mulumbu their marching orders at Goodison Park back in November 2010, he has produced just one red card in 49 Premier League games, that going to QPR midfielder Shaun Derry at Old Trafford in April. Mason's assistants today are Dave Bryan and Simon Long, while Anthony Taylor is the fourth official.
