Sunderland vs. Reading
Minute Commentary
90' FULL-TIME
Martin O'Neill celebrates his one-year anniversary at Sunderland with a much-needed 3-0 home win against relegation rivals Reading. His Black Cats side are now up to 15th in the Premier League table after just their third win this season while Wigan drop into the bottom three. They went comfortably ahead thanks to James McClean's beautiful left-foot drive which flew past Adam Federici at his near post in just the third minute. And they doubled their advantage just before the half-hour mark thanks to a wonderful piece of thinking from Steven Fletcher who cleverly backheeled Danny Rose's low cross into the corner for his seventh Premier League goal of the season. Reading fell to their fifth successive league defeat as Stephane Sessegnon wrapped things up deep in second half stoppage time after keeping his cool to hold off Adrian Mariappa before rounding Federici and sealing the points.
90' EASY THREE
He's back amongst the goals and has wrapped up the victory for Sunderland. A long ball down the middle is well collected by Stephane Sessegnon, who holds off Adrian Mariappa before rounding Adam Federici and tucking the ball into the back of the empty net.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
STEPHANE SESSEGNON
90' DROPPING DEEP
John O'Shea wins another header at the back as goalkeeper Adam Federici comes all the way to the halfway line to pump the ball into the box.
90' FIVE MINUTES
We're going to have five added minutes of stoppage time at the Stadium of Light. Reading are staring at their fifth successive defeat. Can they save the day?
89' SUPER SAVE
Simon Mignolet comes to Sunderland's rescue with an excellent stop at the near post to deny Noel Hunt a certain goal.
87' WIDE OF TARGET
Nicky Shorey digs out a left-foot cross from the right which is met by Adam Le Fondre after a darting run in the box, but unfortuately for him, the ball loops high and wide of his intended target.
84' EASILY HELD
Reading are pushing more and more men forward and they almost get caught at the back as Stephane Sessegnon finds Steven Fletcher, but his drive is caught by the busy Adam Federici.
81' FINE STOP
Stephane Sessegnon picks out James McClean in space on the left side and the Irishman's goalbound effort is palmed away by the strong left-hand of Adam Federici.
78' ANOTHER CHANGE
Titus Bramble makes a rare appearance in an emergency change for the home side after an injury to the substitute Phillip Bardsley - who is substituted.
75' SAMUEL ON
Young striker Dominic Samuel replaces Garath McCleary as Brian McDermott goes for broke with time running out. His side desperately need a goal. Meanwhile, Steven Fletcher is booked by referee Neil Swarbrick for descent.
72' ROSE REPLACED
Danny Rose gets a standing ovation as he is replaced by David Vaughan with under 20 minutes of the match remaining now. Reading look for a penalty as Jobi McAnuff falls over in the box, but nothing is doing.
71' NEAT STOP
Stephane Sessegnon cracks an instant powerful drive straight down the throat of Royals shot-stopper Adam Federici, who makes the save.
68' LOUD APPEALS
Positive movement once again by Danny Rose as he feeds Steven Fletcher who runs at defenders before falling over at the last. Referee Neil Swarbrick doesn't even acknowledge the loud calls from the home fans for a penalty and to be fair the Scot didn't appeal for one.
64' CATS BREAK
After an intense couple of minutes of pressure from Reading, the home side break in numbers after a wonderful tackle by the imperious Carlos Cuellar. However, it comes to nothing after Danny Rose's cross is behind Steven Fletcher.
61' READING CHANCE
Nicky Shorey whips over a free-kick from the left but Jay Tabb fails to get enough power and direction on his header. The visitors seem to be missing the physical presence of the experienced Jason Roberts tonight.
59' KNEE TROUBLES
James McClean immediately pulls up feeling his right knee after chasing down Shaun Cummings. He's receiving some medical attention now, but is soon back on his feet to the relief of the Sunderland supporters.
56' SWEET SAVE
Danny Rose is booked for a very late tackle on Jobi McAnuff just on the edge of the box. And from the resulting free-kick, Simon Mignolet dives across his goal to palm away Nicky Shorey's dinked left-footer over the wall.
53' GOOD WIDTH
James McClean whips a fantastic right-foot cross in, but Steven Fletcher fails to read it and cannot make up the yardage in time.
51' NOEL HUNTING
Adam Le Fondre shows a nice switch of pace down the right before his pull back is met by Noel Hunt, but he can only direct his drive into the stand behind the goal.
49' SWEDE SWITCH
Sebastian Larsson has moved over to play wide now that Adam Johnson has been replaced with a dead leg. That's the word from the touchline folks.
46' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Reading get the second half underway at the Stadium of Light. The men from Berkshire are two goals down and will need to turn the screw early in this period to have any chance of rescuing something. As things stand Sunderland are heading out of the bottom three. There has been a change by the hosts and Phillip Bardsley has replaced the injured Adam Johnson.
45' HALF-TIME
Martin O'Neill is on course to record his one-year anniversary at Sunderland with a much-needed home win. His Black Cats side are comfortably ahead thanks to James McClean's beautiful low drive which flew past Adam Federici in just the third minute. And they doubled their advantage just before the half hour mark thanks to a wonderful piece of thinking from Steven Fletcher who backheeled Danny Rose's low cross into the back of the net. Reading look to be heading for a fifth successive Premier League defeat unless Brian McDermott can inspire his troops at the break.
45' LATE PRESSURE
Brian McDermott watches on as the fourth official's board goes up showing an additional three added minutes. Jobi McAnuff wins his side a corner, but Sunderland defend well and Carlos Cuellar hacks the ball anywhere.
44' JUST OVER
Steven Fletcher holds his head in his hands after heading Adam Johnson's corner from the right just over the crossbar. The striker clearly feels he should have done better!
42' BATTLE SCARS
The tackles are going in hard now as Adam Johnson is brought crashing down in the middle of the park and is need of some medical attention. Meanwhile, Danny Rose is still feeling that left knee. He may try and run it off with just a couple of minutes remaining in this first half.
39' ROSE IN PAIN
Defender Danny Rose gets a smack on his left knee after Adam Le Fondre looked to battle his way into the box.
37' BUSY BEES
After a spell of neat possession, James McClean's strike from the edge of the box is deflected away for a corner and you sense there could well be more goals to come in this game.
34' SHOOT ON SIGHT
Reading need a spark of sorts to get themselves back into this game, because there is only one team in it. Jay Tabb lets fly from distance, but the ball was always rising over the crossbar.
30' CLASSY FINISH
What a magnificent goal from striker Steven Fletcher as the Black Cats double their advantage. Danny Rose was the creator down the left as his low cross was backheeled into the back of the net by the Scotland International for his seventh goal of the season.
29' GOOOAAALLL!!!
STEVEN FLETCHER
28' PURE FRUSTRATION
Goalscorer James McClean lets himself down by a lack of close control on the edge of the box as the ball runs away from him for a goalkick to Reading. There are groans of frustration from the home fans.
26' ROYAL SUPPORT
Reading have brought along probably less than a thousand fans and they're trying to make themselves heard in the top tier of the visiting stand in this vast bowl of a stadium.
24' SO CLOSE
Stephane Sessegnon turns Alex Pearce on the edge of the box before lashing his right-foot piledriver wide of the far post, although Adam Federici was worried it might have been heading in judging by the look on his face.
21' McANUFF STUFF
Jobi McAnuff is becoming a real threat to the Black Cats down the left-hand side. He tries to trick his way into the box, but Sunderland have enough defenders back to snuff out the danger.
18' CONTROLLED POSSESSION
Steven Fletcher is running Adrian Mariappa ragged right now as the hosts keep a hold of the ball and make Reading work hard just to win the ball back. Encouraging football from the Wearsiders.
15' FABULOUS FLETCHER
Adrian Mariappa is booked after being bamboozled by a superb piece of skill from striker Steven Fletcher, who wins his side a free-kick down the right of Reading's penalty area.
11' ROYALS GO CLOSE
The visitors win a free-kick which is whipped into Alex Pearce, who is left all alone eight yards from goal, but he can only sidefoot the ball wide of the far post.
8' MORE OPPORTUNITIES
Firstly Sebastian Larsson's wonderful effort is palmed around the post by Adam Federici and then Stephane Sessegnon almost breaks through the middle. The home crowd have been encouraged by this electrifying start by their team.
4' SUPERB FINISH
The Black Cats have made a superb start to this game thanks to McLean's superb finish - his first Premier League goal of the season. Adam Federici flapped at Adam Johnson's corner and the ball fell nicely for the Irishman, who found a gap at the near post.
3' GOOOAAALLL!!!
JAMES McCLEAN
0' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Here we go then. Sunderland get us underway at the Stadium of Light. The pitch is in excellent condition, considering the weather is very cold in the north-east at this time of year. We have a pretty decent turn out.
0' TEAM NEWS
Sunderland have striker Steven Fletcher, who missed the weekend's home defeat against Cheslea, back after his ankle injury and is expected to start up front alongside James McClean and Stephane Sessegnon in a 4-3-3 system. In the only other change, Jack Colback replaces Phil Bardsley in the backline. Reading boss Brian McDermott makes three changes to his side which lost 1-0 at Southampton at the weekend. Alex Pearce replaces Sean Morrison who misses the trip due to an ankle injury while Garath McCleary comes into midfield for Hal Robson-Kanu. Noel Hunt replaces the injured Jason Roberts in attack. Striker Pavel Pogrebnyak also misses out with a knock.
0' TEAMS
SUNDERLAND: Mignolet, Gardner, O'Shea, Cuellar, Colback, Johnson, Rose, Larsson, McClean, Sessegnon, Fletcher. SUBS: Westwood, Bardsley, Campbell, Wickham, Kilgallon, Vaughan, Bramble. READING: Federici, Cummings, Pearce, Mariappa, Shorey, McCleary, Tabb, Leigertwood, McAnuff, Hunt, Le Fondre. SUBS: Taylor, Gunter, Gorkss, Harte, Gunnarsson, Obita, Samuel.
0' REFEREE
Neil Swarbrick from Preston in Lancashire takes charge of tonight's fixture. He took up refereeing relatively late, at the age of 29 but was soon promoted to the select group of referees in 2011. He has taken charge of five matches this season and has issued 17 bookings but no reds, so he'll be hoping to avoid a largely trouble-free evening.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Sunderland could have striker Steven Fletcher, who missed the weekend's game, back as his ankle condition has improved. The Scotland international missed Saturday's 3-1 defeat by Chelsea, so Connor Wickham could deputise. Defender John O'Shea managed to play the full 90 minutes at the weekend on his return from a calf problem and did not suffer a reaction, but skipper Lee Cattermole (knee ligaments) is out for up to two months. Brian McDermott's side have only one win from their first 15 games and slipped six points from safety when they lost at Southampton on Saturday. Sean Morrison is set to miss the Berkshire's side trip after sustaining an ankle injury at the weekend. The defender left St Mary's on crutches after the 1-0 defeat and has only a slight chance of playing, while striker Pavel Pogrebnyak is a doubt with a knock. Alex McCarthy (shoulder), Jimmy Kebe (groin) and Jem Karacan (knee) are all out, although the latter has started light training. Chris Gunter (hamstring) is another expected to be sidelined.
0' UNDER PRESSURE
Wearside boss O'Neill has won 11 of his 39 games in charge at Sunderland, a win ratio of 28.21. Former manager Steve Bruce achieved the same winning percentage in his last 39 games before he was sacked. However, the former Celtic and Aston Villa manager insists he is the best man for the job at the north-east club: "I don't want to sound wildly boastful, but not only am I the best man for the job, I am actually the only man for the job. We will steer it through, we will get calmer waters ahead - it might take us a few months to do that - and then we will see." Meanwhile, opposite number Brian McDermott is already looking to strengthen his squad in January. "We have a couple or three targets – and then it would depend on finances." Reading chairman John Madejski has jumped to the defence under-fire manager McDermott is doing and says speculation his job is under threat is "totally absurd". There is some good news for Reading fans though as 53% of teams that were second from bottom after 15 games since 1995/96 season have survived, while 47% were relegated.
0' PREVIEW
Sunderland meet Reading in a crunch relegation six-pointer at the Stadium of Light tonight. This is a rearranged fixture after the game had been called off due to a waterlogged pitch at the Stadium of Light back in August. The clash between the two struggling Premier League sides marks Martin O'Neill's one-year anniversary in the Black Cats' hotseat. The Ulsterman's 18th placed side having won only one of their last 11 top flight fixtures at home and just two in 23 games dating back to last March. Meanwhile, the 19th placed Royals have suffered four successive league defeats and are still searching for their first away win. Should they lose this game, it'll be their second longest run of defeats in their top flight history. The hosts would jump three places up to 15th, if they collect three points tonight while Reading would stay exactly where they are, even if they recorded victory. A draw would help neither side as they would stay exactly where they are, so expect both teams to go all out for a win in what should be an open encounter.
