90' FULL TIME REPORT
Before the game, Brendan Rodgers talked of his belief that the club can finish in the Champions League places at the end of the season. After Liverpool's performance this afternoon, he may well wish to reassess that judgment. Christian Benteke's fantastic drive on the half hour mark stunned the Reds, who had dominated up until that point. And by the time Andreas Weimann made it 2-0 before half-time, Anfield was stunned. Any possible turnaround was dismissed when Benteke was allowed to waltz through the Reds defence and extend Villa's lead early in the second period. Steven Gerrard's stooping header was nothing but consolation for Liverpool who were ultimately left frustrated by Villa's outstanding dogged defence.

Stewart Downing gets a low cross into the box and for once it is met by a Liverpool player. However Daniel Agger horribly miscues his effort which almost hits the corner flag. The home fans are beginning to sneak out.

Villa so close to a fourth. Barry Bannan attempts a first-time shot from the edge of the area and Weimann gets his head to it, diverting the ball just wide of a wrong-footed Reina's left-hand post.

Chances are few and far between for Liverpool now. Joe Cole sums up the afternoon by trying to trick his way past Matthew Lowton before overhitting a cross out for a goal kick. Liverpool are all out of ideas.
74' DEFENSIVE MASTERCLASS
Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann are likely to receive the plaudits in the newspapers tomorrow but credit has to be given to Villa's defence. It has been a monumental effort from the three-man backline, as well as the rest of their rigid, dogged team. It's been a masterclass in how to win an away match as an underdog.

Benteke steals the ball in midfield again before laying it off to Barry Bannan. Bannan has a speculative attempt at goal but it lacks any real power. Liverpool cannot deal with the big Belgian centre forward.

Before today, Aston Villa had only scored four away goals all season. They now have three in 50 minutes - and at Anfield, no less.

45' HALF-TIME REPORT
Aston Villa couldn't get out of their own half for the opening 25 minutes as Liverpool controlled the game. But football is not about possession and Christian Benteke's fantastic strike on the half hour mark knocked the stuffing out of the hosts. In contrast, it gave Villa a confidence boost. Andreas Weimann exchanged passes with Benteke to double Villa's lead and Brendan Rodgers' men will be left wondering how they go in at half-time two goals down.

There's still a long way to go but Villa fans must be dreaming of an Anfield victory. It would be just their second in the last 11 years - an Ashley Young penalty helped the Villains to a 3-1 win in 2009.

Luis Suarez robs Eric Lichaj of the ball on the edge of his own area before rolling it to Jonjo Shelvey. Nathan Baker puts in a fantastic last-ditch tackle to prevent Liverpool taking the lead. Huge let-off for the visitors.

Luis Suarez drifts out to the left before picking out Gerrard with a searching ball. Gerrard takes a bad touch though and the ball dribbles out for a goal kick to Villa.
18' CLOSE TO A VILLA SUCKER PUNCH
Andreas Weimann gets in behind the Reds defence but Reina closes down the Austrian and shepherds him out wide before sliding in and conceding the corner, which comes to nothing.
17' GERRARD CRUCIAL
Despite his mixed start, Steven Gerrard remains at the centre of all Liverpool's attacking play. The midfielder is one of only three midfielders to play all 1440 minutes of PL football this season along with Mikel Arteta and James McCarthy.
12' LIVERPOOL DOMINANCE
It's all Liverpool at the minute. Glen Johnson and Raheem Sterling link up well on the right side to earn a corner kick. Daniel Agger gets a header in from the resulting kick but the ball had already swung out for a goal kick.

Downing strides forward again before striking from 25 yards. It's always going wide though and the winger is left searching for his first Premier League goal for Liverpool. Joe Allen then scuffs a shot wide.

Stewart Downing raids down the left and puts in a good cross but Eric Lichaj bundles the ball back to his goalkeeper, Brad Guzan.
5' SLOPPY GERRARD
Steven Gerrard has started the game in sloppy fashion. Not only has he just misplaced a pass to Luis Suarez, he also overhit a free-kick, which was in a threatening position, by some distance.
2' EARLY VILLA CHANCE
A sloppy Glen Johnson pass forces Martin Skrtel into conceding an early free-kick. Barry Bannan whips it in from the left-hand side and Christian Benteke's header forces Reina into action, but he grasps the ball easily.

Despite their recent improvement, Villa remain perched tentatively above the relegation zone and are suffering injuries to important players as the busy festive period approaches. Captain Ron Vlaar continues to struggle with a calf injury while Gabby Agbonlahor is also a doubt for the trip to Anfield. Striker Darren Bent has been out of favour under Paul Lambert but he looks set to miss the rest of the calendar year with a hamstring problem, leaving the fearsome Christian Benteke certain to start the game.

Mid-table Liverpool can make it three Premier League victories on the bounce for the first time in 18 months and are boosted by the return of forward Luis Suarez. Suarez missed the win over West Ham at Upton Park last week through suspension but the Reds' top scorer should return to lead the line. Left-back-turned-winger Jose Enrique though is likely to miss out - he has struggled to shake off a hamstring injury picked up last week.

Say it quietly, but it might all be coming together for Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers. Back-to-back Premier League wins have helped lift the mood on Merseyside and Rodgers has even been talking about a potential top four finish. That may be a hasty prediction but the Reds will be confident of continuing their good form against struggling Aston Villa this afternoon. Villa have won just four times in the league since February and just one of those wins has come away from home. But the Villains do have recent memories of an Anfield success - a 3-1 victory in August 2009 - and will take heart from their current run of four Premier League matches unbeaten.
