Manchester United vs. Sunderland
Minute Commentary
90' CONFIDENT UNTIED BRUSH OFF BLACK CATS
First half goals from Robin van Persie and Tom Cleverley, followed by a second half Wayne Rooney strike, earnt Manchester United a 3-1 victory against Sunderland at Old Trafford this afternoon. The win sees Sir Alex Ferguson's men extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points, after Manchester City beat Newcastle earlier on in the lunchtime kick-off. Van Persie and Cleverley scored within three first half minutes of each other - Van Persie caressing Ashley Young's cross in from close range, and Cleverley sweeping home after a neat one-two with Carrick. Sunderland looked completely out of it for much of the first period, but came out after half time with seemingly more fight. After a bit of pressure on the United goal, though, they found themselves 3-0 down when Wayne Rooney tapped in Van Persie's cross. Substitute and former United striker Frazier Campbell headed in with 18 minutes to go to make it 3-1, but the league leaders held on to record their fourth straight victory.
90' FULL TIME
That's it. United run out deserved 3-1 winners against Sunderland, stretching their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points.
90' NOT FINISHED YET
Patrice Evra tussles with Carlos Cuellar deep into the Sunderland half, and plays a really good cross into the mixer, only to see it beaten away by a Black Cats defender.
90' THREE MINUTES ADDED TIME
The fourth official indicates that there will be at least three minutes added on the end of this one.
89' DANGEROUS CROSS
Seb Larsson whips in a dangerous cross from the deep, but Titus Bramble can only head over the bar.
86' SUNDERLAND SUB
Jack Colback is replaced, and on comes James McFadden for his debut. Less than five minutes left for the Scot to make an impact.
84' LATE CHALLENGE
Antonio Valencia goes in late on Jack Colback, and Chris Foy pulls the ball back for a free kick. Slightly annoying for Sunderland, though, who would have been in a good position had the referee allowed play on.
80' ALMOST PERFECT
Lovely move from United. Paul Scholes plays a neat one-two on the edge of the box, and very nearly gets a shot away, but for the timely intervention of Jack Colback.
76' SUNDERLAND PRESSING
The visitors have found themselves in a couple of promising positions since scoring. Space opens up for Fraizer Campbell - again at the centre of the action - but the striker opts to cross rather than shoot, only to see the ball cleared away by Phil Jones.
73' UNITED SUB
Ryan Giggs comes on for Tom Cleverley. Decent shift from the England youngster, who took his goal beautifully.
72' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
A comeback from Sunderland, perhaps? Having only been on the field for a matter of minutes, Fraizer Campbell leaps up at the back post to head in a dangerous cross from Stephane Sessegnon against his former employers. Eighteen minutes to go.
72' GOAL!
Fraizer Campbell scores for Sunderland!
71' SPACE OPENS UP
Driving run from Stephane Sessegnon down the centre, as Vidic and Smalling back off the Beninese midfielder. Sessegnon accepts the invitation to shoot, and forces David de Gea into a smart save down to his left.
68' SUBS FOR BOTH SIDES
Fraizer Campbell comes on to replace Adam Johnson for Sunderland, while for United, their captain returns to first team action for the first time in three months, as Nemanja Vidic shakes Rio Ferdinand's hand. A warm reception for the Serbian defender.
67' DEADLY DUO
Robin van Persie (17) and Wayne Rooney (14) have been involved in more goals than any other Premier League players this season. Anyone who doubted that the pair would be able to play together ought to be feeling rather sheepish now.
63' UNITED PRESSING
Not content with their three-goal lead, United are really in top gear now. Rooney, Van Persie, Young and Valencia are combining brilliantly to present the Old Trafford crowd with exhibition-style football. Great to watch; perhaps not so much for the travelling Sunderland fans.
59' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Just as Sunderland looked threatening, United go up the other end and make it 3-0. Van Persie nips into the box, delightfully dinks past Titus Bramble and squares the ball for Wayne Rooney, who only has to tap in from inside the six-yard box. Nice move; game over.
59' GOAL!
Wayne Rooney scores for United!
58' DECENT EFFORT
Substitute Connor Wickham dances with the ball on the edge of the box before unleashing a powerful effort that David de Gea watches over his bar. Better play this from Sunderland.
56' UNCONVENTIONAL SAVE
James McClean's cross from the left is deflected off the leg of Paul Scholes, which forces David de Gea to readjust and stick a leg out to divert the ball behind for a corner. For the second time today, referee Chris Foy pulls corner-taker Sebastian Larsson up for not placing the ball within the quadrant - much to the delight of the United fans.
53' DISAPPOINTING
Marauding run down the right from Carlos Cuellar, who takes Sunderland into a decent position, only to see the move break down when Cuellar fouls Evra.
49' DINKED WIDE
Robin van Persie finds himself one-on-one with Simon Mignolet after being played through over the top of the Sunderland defence. With his first touch, and the Belgian goalkeeper bearing down on him, the Dutchman attempts to delicately lob the ball into the goal, but ends up dinking it just wide of the far post.
48' EARLY CHANCES
United and Sunderland both have good early chances in the second half. First, a Wayne Rooney effort crashes against the crossbar, and up the other end, Craig Gardner's low drive is tipped away by De Gea. Good tempo after the restart.
46' HALF TIME SUBS
Changes for both sides at half time. For United, Paul Scholes comes on for Michael Carrick, while for Sunderland, Steven Fletcher's injury at the end of the first half means he is replaced by Connor Wickham.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Manchester United get things underway for the second period; now playing right to left.
45' HALF TIME
Two goals in less than five minutes for Manchester United - from Robin van Persie and Tom Cleverley - sees them lead Sunderland 2-0 at half time. The visitors have a tough task ahead, and will need to first get hold of the ball for a sustained period if they are to get something out of this one.
45' HANDBALL SHOUT
A cross from the left by Ashley Young deflects off Carlos Cuellar and into the arms of Simon Mignolet. Calls for handball, but no call from Chris Foy.
43' FLETCHER DOWN
With less than two minutes until half time, Steven Fletcher is receiving treatment for what looks like a hip injury. He gingerly makes his way to the touchline, and for a moment, it looked as though he might not be able to return. But he makes his way back onto the field for the final first half moments.
38' HEADED BEHIND
Stephane Sessegnon fires goalwards after Rio Ferdinand had headed away a Sunderland corner, but the Benin international's effort is headed behind by Patrice Evra. Sebastian Larsson's corner is claimed easily by David de Gea.
35' MARAUDING RUN
Michael Carrick plays a neat one-two on the edge of the box with Wayne Rooney, but the midfielder drags his shot slightly, though still forces Simon Mignolet into a smart save low down.
34' FRONTMEN COMBINE
Nearly another opening for the home side. Rooney feeds Van Persie in the box, who looks to cut the ball back for his strike partner, but his pass is just behind the England forward, allowing Sunderland to clear up.
30' UNITED BACK ON TOP
A brief spell of pressure from Sunderland comes to an end, with United back in control now. Antonio Valencia and Phil Jones are combining well down the right flank, and causing the young Jack Colback all sorts of problems.
25' UP THE OTHER END
First chance for Sunderland, as James McClean bursts into the United box from the left flank and opts to shoot from a narrow angle, only to be denied by David de Gea. The young winger might have been better squaring the ball for a teammate there.
23' NARROWLY WIDE
Rooney goes close again. This time from a header off a Patrice Evra cross. Mignolet was beaten, but his effort bounced just wide.
22' SHOULD BE 3-0
Wayne Rooney misses a golden chance to make it 3-0. Ashley Young's cross is nodded back across goal by Van Persie, and Rooney, all alone on the penalty spot, angles his leg around to divert the ball just wide of the post.
19' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Lovely goal this. Michael Carrick slots through Tom Cleverley on the left-hand side of the Sunderland box, and in one movement, the young midfielder wraps his right foot around to delightfully stroke the ball into the far corner.
19' GOAL!
Tom Cleverley scores for United!
18' SPRAWLING SAVE
Lovely pacey ball into the box from Phil Jones on the right flank. Robin van Persie gets his head to it, and is denied a second by a sprawling save from Simon Mignolet across to his left.
16' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
It's been coming. Robin van Persie makes it 12 league goals in Manchester United colours this season, caressing the ball into the back of the net from close range after Ashley Young's cross deflected into his path off John O'Shea.
16' GOAL!
Robin van Persie scores for United!
15' FIRST 15 BEHIND US
Fifteen minutes into this one, and it's been all Manchester United so far. Sunderland have barely been out of their own half; nevermind had the chance to string more than a handful of passes together.
10' FIRED OVER
Great chance for United. A Wayne Rooney corner is half-cleared by Steven Fletcher, but only as far as Patrice Evra, standing centrally just inside the box. The full back has time to control the ball and fire left-footed towards goal, but his effort fizzes narrowly over the bar.
6' GOOD BUILD-UP
United pressing already, as Michael Carrick slots through Ashley Young, whose shot is deflected behind by John O'Shea. From the resulting corner, a driven Young effort is once again deflected behind. Mignolet collects the second corner.
2' EARLY CHANCE
Strong run from full back Phil Jones early on, as the United defender strides into the Sunderland box and manages to get in a cross. Simon Mignolet gets down well to claim the ball, though.
1' HERE WE GO
Sunderland get us underway, playing in their all-navy away strip. United, of course, in their usual red shirts, white shorts and black socks.
0' SUNDERLAND TEAM
Adam Johnson passed a late fitness test and starts today for Sunderland, who make just one change from the side that won 3-0 against Reading, with Titus Bramble coming in for Danny Rose. FULL LINE-UP: Mignolet, Cuellar, Colback, O'Shea, Bramble, Larsson, Gardner, Johnson, McClean, Sessegnon, Fletcher. Subs: Westwood, Campbell, Wickham, McFadden, Kilgallon, Vaughan, Saha.
0' UNITED TEAM
Nemanja Vidic returns for United, but only makes the bench. David de Gea gets the nod in goal ahead of Anders Lindegaard, while Phil Jones starts at right back. FULL LINE-UP: De Gea, Jones, Smalling, Ferdinand, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Cleverley, Young, Rooney, van Persie. Subs: Lindegaard, Giggs, Hernandez, Vidic, Welbeck, Scholes, Fletcher.
0' KICK-OFF - 15:00 GMT
Join us just before kick-off for all the confirmed team news and all the action from Old Trafford.
0' SUNDERLAND EARLY TEAM NEWS
Adam Johnson and Danny Rose are doubts for Sunderland, after picking up a dead leg and an ankle injury respectively. Steven Fletcher should be fit.
0' UNITED EARLY TEAM NEWS
United skipper Nemanja Vidic is set to return after three months on the sidelines with a knee injury, and his comeback coincides with Jonny Evans missing out with a hamstring problem. Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson will have to pick between David de Gea and Anders Lindegaard between the sticks, with the latter available again after missing last weekend's derby because of the birth of his first child.
0' HEAD-TO-HEAD
United did the double over Sunderland last season by the tightest of margins, winning 1-0 both home and away. Their Old Trafford victory in November was via a Wes Brown own goal – against his former employers, of course – while Wayne Rooney scored 20 minutes in at the Stadium of Light on the last day of last season. United had thought the Premier League title was heading to the red side of Manchester once again, before Sergio Aguero's late winner for City at QPR finished off one of the best seasons in recent memory. Sunderland haven't won any of their last 20 league games against United, losing 15 times in the process, and their record at Old Trafford is even worse: 21 games without a win, in a run stretching back to 1968.
0' DIFFERING FORMS
The 40-point barrier is often cited as the benchmark that ensures Premier League survival. With a win today, Manchester United stride into the 40s at the top of the table, six points ahead of City and looking good value for their lead. Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney are looking decisive in a team that has comfortably topped the goalscoring charts this season. Indeed, United are riding a four-match winning streak for the third time this season, and are still yet to draw a game. But the 40-point mark is something that Martin O'Neill's Sunderland can currently only dream of. With just two wins in 11 top-flight games this year, the Black Cats are certainly not living up to the pre-season hype that had been attached to them. But a 3-0 win against Reading in midweek – their first in five games – signalled a bit of hope for the north-east side. This afternoon's trip to Old Trafford will be tough, though, and the pressure is still on O'Neill to deliver a comfortable season for Sunderland.
0' THE MATCH
Manchester United host Martin O'Neill's Sunderland this afternoon, who haven't won at Old Trafford in a 21-game run that stretches back to 1968. Can they break that spell today? Find out from 15:00 GMT.
