Newcastle United vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
90' FT: NEWCASTLE 1 MAN CITY 3
Manchester City withstand a furious second-half fightback from Newcastle and produce the result that manager Roberto Mancini would have hoped for after last weekend's damaging defeat. The home side started brightly but were knocked back when they conceded the opener on ten minutes, Sergio Aguero being left with a tap-in after an incisive move had carved the Toon defence apart. Samir Nasri, who assisted on the first goal, came close himself, but saw a close-range shot come back off the foot of a post and Aguero had an effort cleared off the line before Javi Garcia headed home from a left-wing corner six minutes before half-time. Newcastle were transformed after the interval and created several good openings, but the only one they took came when City's offside trap failed and Demba Ba was left unmarked to head home his 11th of the season six minutes after the restart. City were hanging on for long periods, but they made the game safe 12 minutes from time through Yaya Toure, who scored twice on this ground last season. It's six defeats in seven games for Newcastle, but Magpies fans have no reason to be fearful - they just don't have the look of potential relegation candidates.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of three minutes of added time.
88' GLORIOUS CHANCE WASTED
Aguero is left all alone as he collects a pass from Silva, but after drawing Krul he dinks a shot wide of the post with the goal at his mercy.
85' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
Gutierrez drops a tempting cross onto the head of Shola Ameobi, but his effort is straight into the arms of Hart. Ageruo shoots fractionally wide for City from 20 yards at the other end.
82' BA SHOOTS WELL OVER
Ba cuts inside Kolo Toure and shoots over from 25 yards. Shane Ferguson replaces Danny Simpson for the home side.
79' GOAL DETAILS
It's so easy for the visitors. Silva held up the ball and waited for Zabaleta on the overlap down the left. He in turn drew his man before teeing up Toure, who slid home a low shot from six yards. Tevez makes way for Lescott shortly afterwards, with Shola Ameobi replacing Cisse for Newcastle.
78' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 1 MAN CITY 3
Yaya Toure nets a third for City.
77' HART SAVES AGAIN
Hart snakes out an arm to block a dangerous cross-cum-shot by Gutierrez, who had found space inside the area. Newcastle still fancy they can snatch something from this match.
75' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Cheick Tiote makes way for Sylvain Marveaux. He gets a good ovation as he leaves the field after a typically hard-working shift.
72' MAN CITY SUBSTITUTION
Aleksander Kolarov makes way for Edin Dzeko. The substitute is substituted, presumably due to injury. It's a left thigh problem, apparently.
71' AMBITIOUS FROM TEVEZ
Aguero skips by Santon with ease but his cross is too long for Tevez, who fails to connect with an ambitious overhead kick.
69' EASY SAVE FOR HART
Newcastle are back on the attack again and Ba's low drive draws a routine save from Hart.
68' GARCIA HEADS WIDE
City finally show some attacking menace in this second half. A quick break ends with Kolarov delivering a low cross from the left that Coloccini is grateful to smuggle behind for a corner. Garcia heads wide from the resulting set-piece after outjumping Perch. The leaden-footed Newcastle defender certainly leaps like a perch, and not like a salmon.
65' PRESSURE IS BUILDING
The pressure continues to build on City. Anita sees a shot deflected wide by Garcia and then Ba scuffs a shot into the side-netting following another corner.
63' THE RUN IS OVER
City's run of minutes without conceding a goal ended at 344 with that Ba header. It's also no team record of four successive clean sheets away from home.
61' NASRI INJURY UPDATE
Samir Nasri has a slight groin strain, apparently, which was the reason for his withdrawal, not the fact that he had taken a blow to the area where cricketers wear a box.
59' TIOTE VOLLEYS WIDE
City only half-clear a Newcastle corner and are relieved to see Tiote's long-range volley go well wide.
58' TEVEZ DENIED
Krul comes out right to the edge of his area and gets a little lucky, as he is able to block a lobbed effort from Tevez.
56' A BOOKING APIECE
Kolo Toure is cautioned for persistent fouling. Perch is booked for an earlier challenge on Yaya Toure.
54' CLOSE TO AN EQUALISER
Newcastle could and perhaps should be level. Anita slips a pass inside to Cisse and his left-foot shot just clears the crossbar. Had the Senegalese found the top corner Hart would have not had a prayer.
53' GOAL DETAILS
City failed to properly clear a left-wing corner. Coloccini lobbed a hopeful ball back into the box and the unmarked Ba looped a header over Hart, with City's defence having unsuccessfully tried to push up for offside.
52' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 1 MAN CITY 2
It's now! Demba Ba pulls one back for the home side.
51' IT'S NOW OR NEVER
A third of Newcastle's league goals this season have come in the 15 minutes after half-time. It's now or never for Alan Pardew's men.
49' BA AND SANTON GO CLOSE
Tiote, out near the right touchline, delivers a superb dipping cross that is just asking to be headed home. Demba Ba rises at the far post, but nods over the top. Santon then fires into the side-netting.
48' STINGY IN DEFENCE
Coming into this game it had been 293 minutes since City had last conceded a goal away from home (to Peter Odemwingie for West Brom on Oct. 20). They have never kept four away clean sheets in a row in the top flight.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Newcastle get the second half under way.
45' HT: NEWCASTLE 0 MAN CITY 2
City have a deserved lead at the break, given to them by Sergio Aguero's 10th-minute strike and extended by Javi Garcia six minutes before the interval. Argentina striker Aguero netted what will likely be his easiest goal of the season, a close-range tap-in after he was found unselfishly by Samir Nasri. Garcia's goal came from a header from a left-wing corner, though David Santon mis-kicked when he could easily have cleared off the line. City have produced some of their most pleasing football of the season and arguably should be even further in front. Nasri hit the foot of a post and Aguero was denied his second by a goal-line clearance by Mile Williamson. Newcastle, though, have had their moments. The home side started superbly and Joe Hart made an excellent save to deny Papiss Cisse. Williamson also forced the England goalkeeper into an equally good save.
43' DYNAMIC DUO
City have a 100 per cent record every time Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez have started a Premier League match. 12 games, 12 wins. It's looking like 13 out of 13.
39' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 0 MAN CITY 2
Javi Garcia doubles City's lead with a header from a left-wing corner which Santon makes an absolute hash of clearing away from the foot of the post.
38' KRUL DENIES TEVEZ
Silva slips in a pass from Tevez down the inside-right channel. The City striker tries to slide an angled shot under Krul, but the goalkeeper keeps out the shot with his foot.
37' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Samir Nasri suffers a painful blow in a rather delicate spot and can take no further part in the match. Aleksander Kolarov comes on in his place. Aguero, meanwhile, is cautioned for kicking the ball away.
34' TEVEZ A BIT SORE
Tevez is down after a collision with Coloccini. He took a blow to the side of his face, but he'll be fine.
32' JUST OVER FROM CISSE
Papiss Cisse lets fly with a drive from 25 yards which is only just over the crossbar.
29' AGUERO SHOOTS WIDE
Tevez and Nasri combine delightfully again. The ball is pulled back to Aguero, who slides a shot wide of the upright.
28' NEWCASTLE BOOKING
Simpson is booked for a late tackle on Silva, who appears to be making rather a meal of that challenge.
26' HART SAVES AGAIN
It's Newcastle's turn to threaten. City fail to clear their lines after Williamson wins the initial header at a free-kick and the Toon defender then forces Hart into a save to his left with a left-foot shot.
24' HAPPY HUNTING GROUND
City supporters will be glad to see Carlos Tevez back in their starting line-up, Toon fans won't. The Argentina striker has five goals in six Premier League games against Newcastle.
22' NASRI IN THE WARS
Nasri needs treatment after a robust challenge from Anita. It's a problem with his left ankle, but he should be fine to continue.
21' OFF THE POST
Newcastle's defence is carved open again by the wonderful skills of Silva, but the Spaniard is wayward with his final pass. Nasri then shoots against the foot of a post from a tight angle before Williamson keeps out a goalbound effort from Aguero.
19' TOON ON THE RACK
There's a fluency about City's play at the moment. It's like when they turned it on at Old Trafford last season. You fear for Newcastle, you really do.
18' FIRST GOAL VITAL
It's six years and ten days since Newcastle last came from a goal down to win a Premier League game. They trailed Reading 2-1 at St James' Park on Dec. 6, 2006 and came back to win 3-2 with Turkey midfielder Emre getting the winner. The signs don't look good today.
16' NEWCASTLE BOOKING
Mike Williamson is booked for a crude tackle on Carlos Tevez, who was running past him at full pelt. City threaten again and Tevez is just unable to get on the end of a pass from Nasri.
13' KRUL A BUSY MAN
City are denied a second by Krul, who makes a good instinctive save to deny Tevez after the Argentina forward had been teed up by Silva.
11' GOAL DETAILS
It's a quality goal from the visitors. Yaya Toure's crossfield pass picked out Nasri on the right and he unselfishly squared the ball for Aguero to tap into an empty net.
10' GOAL: NEWCASTLE 0 MAN CITY 1
Sergio Aguero gives City the lead.
9' BORDERLINE CALL
Krul makes a save with his legs to keep out a low shot by Tevez. The flag, incorrectly as it turned out, was raised for offside. Mancini would have been fuming had that effort found the net.
7' NEWCASTLE ON TOP
Williamson wins a header from an angled free-kick but it just doesn't fall kindly for Cisse in the centre. This has been a terrific start by the home side.
5' HART ALERT AGAIN
Hart has some difficulty keeping out a wickedly-curling corner taken by Anita. Having seen that excellent delivery it's a little surprising that Newcastle have yet to score from a set-piece this season.
3' GREAT SAVE BY HART
Newcastle almost take the lead. A ball in from the right by Tiote is met first-time by Cisse and his right-foot shot is superbly clawed away by Hart.
2' WEATHER REPORT
It's a fine day, the pitch looks good. Perfect conditions for a match that promises goals.
1' HERE WE GO
City kick off, attacking the goal to our right.

Newcastle make just the one change. Hatem Ben Arfa is ruled out with that hamstring problem, with his place going to James Perch. City are without Vincent Kompany (injury) and Gareth Barry (suspension). Their places go to Kolo Toure and Javi Garcia respectively. It's no surprise to see Carlos Tevez preferred to Mario Balotelli up front.
0' PREVIEW
Newcastle United entertain Manchester City in Saturday's early kick-off in the Premier League with both sides desperate for victory. City suffered a huge blow to their title hopes last weekend when they were beaten by a last-gasp Robin van Persie goal for leaders Manchester United and are now six points off the pace at the top. The Toon's focus is on the other end of the table, as they have suffered an alarming drop-off in form since manager Alan Pardew signed an eight-year extension to his current deal and are now hovering too close to the drop zone for comfort. The one reason for optimism for Pardew and Newcastle followers is that they did not play like a team down the wrong end of the table in Monday's defeat at Fulham. True, they looked a little vulnerable at times at the back, but they showed more than enough going forward to suggest that they have enough in the locker to turn things around. Whether it will be today against a City side who simply have to win remains to be seen. Mancini admitted in his pre-match press conference to heated disagreements with Joe Hart, Samir Nasri and Carlos Tevez this week, so if the champions falter again he may find himself dangerously short of friends. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Newcastle were boosted by the return of Hatem Ben Arfa on Monday and the talented midfielder marked his recovery from a hamstring injury with a goal. However, it appears that the Frenchman is unlikely to feature today after aggravating that injury, so once more the onus will be on Demba Ba to add to his ten Premier League goals. For City, surely Roberto Mancini will not make the same mistake as he did in the Manchester derby and start Mario Balotelli up front. Expect the City manager to go with the Argentine duo of Sergio Aguero (six goals) and Carlos Tevez (seven) today. Mancini must also look to encourage Yaya Toure to get into the attacking third of the field where he does most of his good work. The Ivorian's two goals in this fixture last season were crucial in City lifting the title. Toure netted against United last weekend, but that was his first goal in the league since the start of September and he needs to rediscover his best form, particularly as his dereliction of defensive duties at crucial times in recent weeks has contributed to Mancini's men conceding several soft goals.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Newcastle have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 64 wins to 53 by City and 35 games being drawn. At St James Park, Newcastle have 48 wins to 13 by City, with a further 15 meetings ending up all square. City, though, have been narrowing the game in recent years. They won the corresponding match last season 2-0 on May 6, with Yaya Toure scoring twice in the last 20 minutes in what was City's penultimate game of the season. That completed the double, as City had won 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Nov. 19 with penalties from Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero and a goal from open play from Micah Richards. City have won the last five home and away in this fixture and are unbeaten in their last 11, since a 1-0 defeat at St James Park on Sep. 24.
0' FORM GUIDE
City start the weekend in second, having been the last club in England to lose their unbeaten record last Sunday when they were beaten 3-2 at home by Manchester United. They are the only club in the top flight to remain undefeated away from home, having won three and drawn four of their seven matches, conceding just five goals on their travels. City's last away defeat was at Arsenal on Apr. 4, a run of ten games unbeaten. Newcastle currently lie in 14th place with 17 points from 16 games. Sunderland's win over Reading in midweek means they are only two points above the relegation zone. Thirteen of their points have been collected at home, with four wins and one draw from their eight games.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Newcastle are likely to be without Hatem Ben Arfa, who suffered a recurrence of the hamstring injury on Monday night that had forced him to miss the previous four matches. Steven Taylor (hamstring) and Yohan Cabaye (groin surgery) remain sidelined. Manchester City will be missing captain Vincent Kompany, who limped off with a hamstring injury against United. Gareth Barry is suspended and Jack Rodwell and James Milner (both hamstring) and Micah Richards (knee) are all ruled out.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Andre Marriner, who was appointed to the select group of referees in 2005. The West Midlands whistleblower has administered 33 cautions in his nine Premier League outings to date and has yet to show a red card. In fact, the last player he dismissed was Stoke's Ricardo Fuller at Chelsea in March, some 18 games ago. This is Marriner's second appointment involving both of these clubs, having taken charge of City's 2-2 draw at Liverpool in August and Newcastle's 2-2 draw at Reading in September. His assistants today are Scott Ledger and Mick McDonough, while Phil Dowd is the fourth official.
