Tottenham Hotspur vs. Swansea City
Minute Commentary
90' FINAL SCORE: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1, SWANSEA CITY 0
Spurs left it late, but secured victory against a very committed Swans side. Jan Vertonghen scored the only goal of the game from a Kyle Walker free-kick. The visiting defence failed to clear and the Belgian swept in from close-range. Up until that point, Michael Laudrup's side had looked set to frustrate a Spurs side who looked desperately short of invention without Gareth Bale. The first-half saw the hosts dominate possession and continually work the ball into wide areas, only for the outstanding Swansea defence, in particular Ashley Williams, to match them with some tremendous saving tackles. Two Jermain Defoe shots and a Walker piledriver were all they had to show at the break for all their hard work, and the pattern continued in the second half. Indeed Swansea grew in confidence as Spurs continued to draw a blank, and they will be grateful for Vertonghen's opportunism, having seen their recognised attacking options continually draw a blank. The game ended in pandemonium as Hugo Lloris laid Michu out with a punch as they contested a 50-50 ball at the death. Spurs played on, Swansea protested, but nothing came of it, and Andre Villas-Boas' men went on to secure another valuable victory which moves them up into joint third position.
90' VERY FULL TIME
There's drama at the end here. Michu has been flattened by a haymaker from Hugo Lloris as they contested a bouncing ball, the game continued with the striker flat out in the area and Tottenham almost scored at the other end. Chico Flores , amongst others, took exception to the matter and non-playing substitute Jake Livermore has been booked for coming onto the pitch. A bizarre ending but the whistle has gone. It's all over at the Lane.
90' LATE RALLY
With a minute to go, it's the reutrn of Scott Parker in place of Moussa Dembele. He hasn't played in the league this season since his injury at the Euros in the summer. Swansea are mounting a late challenge and William Gallas has to turn it out for a corner.
90' DEFOE CLOSE AGAIN
Jermain Defoe finally finds some space behind the visitors' defence and could have sealed it when Gylfi Sigurdsson played him through but Tremmel saved with his legs. It looks like a fifth consecutive victory at home for Andre Villas-Boas. His side will move level on points with Chelsea in third position.
88' WINDING DOWN
Wayne Routledge can't quite slip Luke Moore in and Spurs break casually. They look content to keep the ball and play time out. Danny Graham has come on for Nathan Dyer for Swansea. That's a last throw of the dice for Michael Laudrup.
85' SPREADING OUT
Vertonghen is close again as he blasts a 35-yard free-kick narrowly over the bar. There's a little more space for Swansea now as Spurs commit less players forward.
82' DANGEROUS GAME
A Swansea corner comes into a dangerous area but Spurs clear. The visitors will be disappointed they didn't clear that set-piece and have gone behind with only ten minutes remaining. Great rafts of Tottenham pressure were sure to tell though, and the Swans have an uphill struggle to salvage something now.
78' 1-0 SPURS
Finally Spurs find a way through and it's from an unlikely source. Vertonghen was up for a free-kick out on the right and Walker's delivery fell to the big defender who slotted it home on the half-volley with a fine finish low to Tremmel's left.
76' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Jan Vertonghen breaks the deadlock!
76' RED WALL
Swansea are allowing the ball and inviting them to try to break down a seemingly impenetrable wall of red shirts. Laudrup makes his second change and Luke Moore enters the fray in plave of Sung-Yueng Ki.
74' ADEBAYOR OFF
Adebayor can't continue. He makes his way down the tunnel and Andros Townsend must come on. That will disrupt Spurs a little and deny them some height up-front. The game is petering out a little at the moment.
72' SPURS CHANGE
Andre Villas-Boas turns to the bench now, and it's a cameo for Gylfi Sigurdsson against his old side in place of the slightly underwhelming Clint Dempsey. Straight away Emmanuel Adebayor is on the deck clutching his hamstring.
69' JUST WIDE BY DEFOE
Ooh! Jermain Defoe is inches wide with a trademark snap-shot from 25 yards that fizzed just past the post. He hasn't looked afraid to shoot today as has the England man, but Swansea's deep-lying approach has really denied the Spurs attack any space to run into and limited them to speculative efforts.
66' WILY WELSHMEN
Frustration for Tottenham as Kyle Naughton lofts a cross high over the head of Adebayor. A very stout back seven are organised and working hard for Swansea. The longer the game goes on, the more they'll feel that the pace and trickery of Dyer and Michu might pay dividends with a fast break.
63' SWANS SWITCH
Michael Laudrup makes the first change of the game and brings on Kemy Agustien for Jonathan De Guzman. Again the Swansea defence have to be at their best to repel Defoe. There's been plenty of good buid-up play but no way through for two evenly-matched teams.
60' ON THE EDGE
An end-to-end affair is being characterised by a number of last-ditch challenges in dangerous areas. Spurs work it out to Walker who shanks it horribly out of play when well-positioned on the right of the area.
58' OPENING OUT
Walker knocks a long free-kick to the back post which Jan Vertonghen stretches to nod onto the top of the net. Swansea come again and it's a very open game now.
56' DEMBELE BOOKED
A lively start to the second half has Spurs on the front foot with more fine Swansea defending. Moussa Dembele picks up a yellow after bringing Routledge down in the middle of the park. Dembele then hits a deflected effort wide from 30 yards out.
52' CHANCES
Dyer again threatens Spurs before Emmanuel Adebayor breaks upfield and forces Gerhard Tremmel to turn it behind with a shot on the stretch from way out. Tottenham waste the corner though.
50' DYER CLOSE
Nathan Dyer harries Kyle Walker in the left-back position from the off before Kyle Walker does likewise for Spurs on Wayne Routledge, but that's a foul. Then it's Dyer again who narrowly misses getting enough on a cross played right across the face of goal. That was a very good chance for Swansea.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
The sides are out once more and Spurs kick off.
45' GOALLESS AT THE BREAK
So the players take a rest after an interesting half of football. Spurs unquestionably dominated possession and had the better of the chances, but you get the feeling that Michael Laudrup will arguably go in a little the happier of the two managers, his side having weathered the storm and preserved their clean sheet so far. Jermain Defoe twice saw sight of goal in good positions early on and then Clint Dempsey and Aaron Lennon both had chances before Kyle Walker unleashed a superb contender for best shot never to go in. It would certainly still be on it's way across Northh London as we speak had the stout and petrified figure of Gerhard Tremmel not stood in the way. Swansea are not out of it though, and they've come back into the half late on enough to suggest that we will have a competitive second half on our hands...
45' CHANCE ENCOUNTER
Swansea respond after that heavy artillery from Walker and Nathan Dyer blasts one just shy of Hugo Lloris's left upright before Michu tries to lob the Frenchman from 40 yards on the left. It was a decent attempt, as was Jan Vertonghen's well struck free-kick a minute later that could only find the wall. That's half-time folks.
44' LET FLY WALKER
Holy cow, Kyle Walker almost just broke the ball and scared the living daylights out of Gerhard Tremmel from 40 yards. He won't connect with a ball better than that too often and all the keeper could do is squirm awkwardly as it pinged off his shoulder and over the bar.
39' VIEW FROM THE SIDELINES
We're approaching half-time now and, to some extent, both managers will be happy with their sides' performance. Andre Villas-Boas' side have bossed the game, should have scored and will hope to do so after the break. Swansea will have expected a rearguard away from home and they're equipping themselves effectively.
32' EVENING OUT
Surely it will come this time, but no! Kyle Walker blasts one over from the by-line and again Swansea have a foot in as Dempsey arrives. The Swans are just beginnning to wrestle a little more possession fom the hosts and Dwight Tiendalli almost picks out Wayne Routledge with a whipped cross as Routledge arrived on the shoulder of the last defender.
28' SWAN HAND
Swansea City hold firm in the face of wave after wave of Spurs pressure. Lennon again fires in a cross which is hacked away acrobatically, and then he jinks his way into the area only for a last ditch challenge to deny him a final ball. It's stout defence from Swansea, there's no doubt about that.
24' HOME FREE
A Defoe shot on the turn is bent round De Guzman's left-hand post from the edge of the area and then a Lennon cross sees Clint Dempsey loop a weak header into the keeper's arms. Spurs must surely make this posession count and find a finish.
20' STRIKING SPURS
It's suddenly all Spurs. Dempsey was fouled in the break-down from Defope's shot but the free-kick only hit the Swansea wall. Then Tottenham win a corner that's cleared and Dempsey leads the attack once more. A couple of lax moments have gifted the momentum to the hosts and they're working the ball well in their opponent's half.
17' SPURS AGAIN
The best chance so far falls to Spurs after Michu is lackadaisical and gives it away in his own half. Dempsey takes two defenders out of play and rolls a back-heel to the on-rushing Defoe who can only canon it into the sliding Michu's legs from 10 yards. A great recovery by the Spaniard is then jeopardised again as it's Ki who gives it to Defoe this time but he can't capitalise.
14' TOUGH DEAL
A superb succession of hard but fair tackles by Williams on Defoe show the diminutive striker he won't be getting any change out of the Swansea City back-line easily today. Having said that, he then finds a yard and forces Gerhard Tremmel to gather a low shot.
11' HERE COME SPURS
Spurs breach the Swans penalty area for the first time and Clint Dempsey looks for a one-two with Emmanuel Adebayor but it's nicked away from him and the Welshmen come again. Ashley Williams puts it poorly out of play but he then twice blocks Jermain Defoe as he looked to cross on the break. Sandro then opens his account in today's corner-flag challenge from 30 yards.
8' CHICO TIME
Chico Flores arrived to meet Swansea's corner but was unable to get anything meaningful on a low daisy-cutter. Swansea have had the better of early exchanges though, Sung-Yueng Ki in particular looking strong and composed in possession.
6' TAP DANCING
Surprise surprise the ball has barely left the deck so far. It's the international convention of short passes, and Swansea win a (short?) corner as Britten slips Michu through but it runs out of play.
3' STRONG SPURS
So Emmanuel Adebayor gets the nod up-front and Moussa Dembele's continued fitness in the middle of the park is a major boost for Spurs although the absence of Gareth Bale will certainly have Swansea breathing a sigh of relief.
1' KICK-OFF
We're underway, Swansea in red and Spurs their all-white.
0' THE SIDES
The team-sheets are in and the sides will line up as follows... Tottenham: Lloris, Walker, Gallas, Vertonghen, Naughton, Lennon, Sandro, Dembele, Dempsey, Adebayor, Defoe. Subs: Friedel, Huddlestone, Parker, Sigurdsson, Livermore, Townsend, Caulker. Swansea: Tremmel, Tiendalli, Chico, Williams, Davies, Britton, Ki, Dyer, de Guzman, Routledge, Michu. Subs: Cornell, Graham, Monk, Shechter, Moore, Agustien, Richards.
0' WELCOME ALONG
Welcome to North London for today's match. An expectant crowd is filing into White Hart Lane ahead of what will surely be a tough test for Spurs and a pleasing game for the neutral. Despite a less an faultless start to his career here, Andre Villas-Boas' side nevertheless remain in striking distance of that illusive and hotly-contested top four finish. Swansea are more than a potential banana skin, they've marked themselves out as a team who expect than that and are more than capable of delivering the good's. Let's hope the match does so too. Standby for commentary...
0' SWANNING ALONG
Michael Laudrup has enjoyed an incredible start to his tenure at the Liberty Stadium, and the Swans had gone six unbeaten, including victory over Arsenal and a draw with Chelsea, before Norwich's 4-3 win there last week. He has also been blessed with precious few injury worries. Pablo Hernandez and goalkeeper Michel Vorm are both doubtful for the trip to North London but are expected to return within a couple of weeks.
0' SPURRED ON
Everton's late comeback last Sunday halted a run of three league wins for Tottenham which had seen them climb back into contention at the top of the table. Andre Villas-Boas could be boosted by the return of Scott Parker for Swansea's visit. The England midfielder has completed 90 minutes for Spurs' Under-21 side and trained this week. Villas-Boas also confirmed that Michael Dawson is on the mend, but Gareth Bale and Benoit Assou-Ekotto need a little longer before they are available: “Michael trained today with the team and is back after his muscle injury against Fulham. That was important for him and he now has another training session tomorrow to be back in contention...Scott Parker has made a good recovery and there is certainly a possibility he could be involved...Gareth Bale is not an impossible scenario, but it's very unlikely he'll be involved...Benoit Assou-Ekotto is still further off, but he has joined the team [in training this week]. As soon as he is match fit, he will be involved.” said the Portuguese this week.
0' PREVIEW: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR VS. SWANSEA CITY
One for the purists perhaps as two sides capable of some of the Premier League's most eye-catching football clash at the Lane with fifth place at stake. Swansea would overtake Tottenham in the UEFA CUP spot with a win whilst Spurs have the opportunity to draw level on points with Chelsea in third place. The match also features two of this season's hottest marksmen. Michael Laudrup was full of praise for 13-goal £2 million man Michu this week, whom the Dane now argues could be worth closer to 15 times that amount. A more seasoned campaigner in England, Tottenham's Jermaine Defoe is enjoying one of his most free-scoring seasons, having notched 9 in the league and 13 overall this term. Gylfi Sigurdsson will also hope to play against the side for whom he equalised here last season, before two Emmanuel Adebayor goals sealed it for Spurs.
