Reading vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' FT: READING 2 ARSENAL 5
Arsenal are up to fifth and within two points of neighbours Spurs after a dominant performance at the Madejski inspired by a hat-trick from Santi Cazorla. The super Spaniard netted on 32, 34 and 60 minutes, helped by some inspired Arsenal attacking play down the flanks and some equally appalling defending from the division's bottom club. The result means the guillotine hanging over Arsene Wenger's head has been packed away again until the next crisis point is reached at the Emirates. Reading, though, battled back gamely and gave the visitors a scare late on with goals from substitute Adam Le Fondre on 66 minutes and from Jimmy Kebe five minutes later. The Gunners were a class apart for the first hour and took the lead on 14 minutes when Lukas Podolski was the first to expose the defensive deficiencies of the home side. Cazorla then took centre-stage, showing what a good player he is given time and space to do as he pleases. It was only fitting Arsenal had the last word, and it came from Walcott, who finished expertly after another incisive counter-attack, with Cazorla completing an excellent night's work by supplying the final pass.
90' FEDERICI SAVES AGAIN
Federici stands tall and makes a good stop to keep out a lob from Giroud.
90' WIDE FROM GIROUD
Podolski gets away down the left, but the pass is behind Giroud, who is unable to hook the ball home.
90' TIMELY TACKLE
McAnuff is one-on-one with last man Vermaelen, who takes the ball off the Reading man's foot. Three minutes of added time.
87' SETTLING FOR FIVE
Arsenal are spraying the ball around as they please here. They don't look too fussed about getting a sixth.
85' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Olivier Giroud replaces Theo Walcott for the Gunners.
83' WIDE FROM PODOLSKI
Cazorla and Walcott combine to free Podolski down the left, but his rasping drive goes the wrong side of the post. Coquelin replaces Cazorla for Arsenal.
80' GOAL: READING 2 ARSENAL 5
Theo Walcott makes the game safe for Arsenal, collecting a pass from Cazorla, cutting inside and finding the corner with a left-foot shot.
78' WILSHERE FAR FROM HAPPY
Wilshere takes exception to an aerial challenge from Tabb, who appeared to elbow the Arsenal midfielder in the head. Whether it was intentional or not is open to debate.
76' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is replaced by Aaron Ramsey.
74' CAZORLA DENIED A FOURTH
Arsenal launch a raid and Cazorla's angled drive stings the fingers of Federici.
72' ARSENAL BOOKING
Jack Wilshere is booked for a tackle on Gorkss, followed by some choice words to the referee to make sure. Goal-scorer Kebe makes away for Garath McCleary.
71' GOAL DETAILS
Robson-Kanu showed some neat foot-work on the edge of the area and timed his incisive pass to perfection for Kebe, who calmly slotted into the corner.
70' GOAL: READING 2 ARSENAL 4
Jimmy Kebe pulls another one back for Reading. The comeback's on!
66' GOAL: READING 1 ARSENAL 4
Reading pull one back through Adam Le Fondre, the substitute collecting a pass from Tabb and rounding the goalkeeper before netting. It stemmed from an appalling crossfield pass from Gibbs.
64' FEDERICI SAVES AGAIN
Arsenal have men over in attack, but Walcott rather selfishly tries a shot and sees his effort beaten away.
63' READING SUBSTITUTIONS
Reading make a double-switch, with Robson-Kanu and Le Fondre coming on for Pogrebnyak and Hunt.
61' GOAL DETAILS
It's a wonderful team goal from the visitors, slick first-touch football which ended with Podolski squaring from the left and Cazorla completing his treble with a tap-in.
60' GOAL: READING 0 ARSENAL 4
Santi Cazorla completes his hat-trick for Arsenal.
59' BRAVE HEADER
Gorkss makes a brave header to get in the way of a Mertesacker effort from Walcott's right-wing corner as Arsenal up the tempo again.
58' WALCOTT SHOOTS WIDE
Walcott collects a short pass from Podolski and shoots just wide from outside the box. Arsenal are playing within themselves at the moment, which is a relief to the home side.
55' TIME FOR A CHANGE
Jack Wilshere's looking a bit leggy to me. With this game seemingly won it might be a good time to introduce Rosicky or Ramsey.
52' OFF THE LINE
Arsenal are denied a fourth by a brilliant goal-line clearance by Mariappa, who gets back behind his goalkeeper to prevent a Walcott shot from finding the net.
51' INFLUENTIAL CHARACTER
How important is Theo Walcott to Arsenal? He has been involved in more Arsenal goals in the Premier League than any other player (four goals and four assists) despite playing just 596 minutes, 17th most on the team.
49' WALCOTT DUE A GOAL
The one real surprise so far this evening is that Arsenal's central striker, Theo Walcott, has not yet found the net. Perhaps that might change in the second half.
47' BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID
The Royals go to champions Manchester City on Saturday. Dear, oh dear. Oxlade-Chamberlain blasts wide over from 25 yards.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Reading get the second half under way.
45' HT: READING 0 ARSENAL 3
Arsenal are out of sight at the break and if you are a Reading fan go and do something less stressful than reading this commentary because it is in danger of getting very, very messy. The important opening goal came on 14 minutes when Lukas Podolski was allowed the time and space to fire home from close range after a Kieran Gibbs cross from the left. Theo Walcott should have doubled the visitors' lead soon after, but his tame effort was well saved by Adam Federici, who has been the best Reading player on the pitch by a mile. The Australian, though, could do nothing about a Santi Cazorla double-strike on 32 and 34 minutes, with Podolski and Gibbs supplying the assists. Reading have caused the odd threat going forward, but Arsenal look like finding the net every time they cross the halfway line.
45' WASTED BY KEBE
Reading launch what looks like a promising counter-attack until Kebe gives the ball away. Groans all round the Madejski.
44' FEDERICI BUSY AGAIN
Sagna delivers a fine cross from the right which is met by the head of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Federici dives to his right to make another good save.
42' PODOLSKI EFFORT BLOCKED
Arsenal threaten a fourth. Cazorla pulls the ball back for Podolski, whose goalbound drive strikes a Reading defender.
39' READING BOOKING
McAnuff is booked for a tackle on Wilshere which caught the Arsenal man in rather a delicate spot. He will argue that he played the ball.
36' GOAL DETAILS
Reading are going down, of that there is no doubt. They can't defend, plain and simple. Walcott crossed from the right, Gibbs headed it back from beyond the far post and Cazorla swivelled and shot into the corner. If Arsenal carry on like this they could get double figures.
35' HT: READING 0 ARSENAL 3
Santi Cazorla scores again. Reading have given up here.
33' GOAL DETAILS
It's easy again for Arsenal, and again it came from down the left. Podolski skinned his man and put a cross into the danger area. Cazorla met the ball with a diving header into the corner, under no pressure whatsoever.
32' GOAL: READING 0 ARSENAL 2
Santi Cazorla adds a second for Arsenal.
30' VERMAELEN SAVES THE GUNNERS
Pogrebnyak springs the offside trap down the left and Vermaelen makes an excellent last-gasp tackle to prevent the ball reaching Hunt.
28' FEDERICI DENIES WILSHERE
Some abject Reading defending gifts Ramsey a shooting chance, but Federici paws the ball away. Had that gone in, the Royals assist-leader McAnuff should have been credited with his seventh of the season, because he teed that up on a plate for the Arsenal midfielder.
26' DISMAL RUN FOR READING
Reading's run of five straight defeats is their worst since 2007-08 when they lost eight successive games. It's looking like six in a row the way things have panned out so far.
24' RAMSEY IN THE WARS
Ramsey gets an accidental knee in the back making a tackle on Tabb and looks in a little discomfort.
23' FEDERICI TO THE RESCUE AGAIN
Walcott gets clean through and looks odds on to score. He collects a pass from Podolski but a rather lazy-looking finish allows Federici to make a fine save.
21' RARE GOAL FROM OPEN PLAY
That goal from Podolski ended a run of 283 minutes without a goal from open play by the Gunners. You fancy there might be one or two more on their way before the night is done. Podolski shoots well wide in the meantime.
19' WIDE FROM CAZORLA
Cazorla lets fly with a right-foot shot from 25 yards which swerves just wide of the right-hand upright. Arsenal are rampant here.
18' TOP OF THE PILE
That strike was the fifth of the season for Podolski, making him the Gunners' leading scorer in the Premier League.
15' GOAL DETAILS
It's a goal out of nothing. Gibbs delivered a cross from the left which Kebe failed to cut out and the German had the time and space to take a touch before drilling a low shot into the corner from ten yards. Easy. Far too easy.
14' GOAL: READING 0 ARSENAL 1
Lukas Podolski gives Arsenal the lead.
12' JUST OVER FROM HUNT
Hunt and Pogrebnyak link up well again and win Reading a corner. Nicky Shorey delivers from the right and Hunt's flicked effort goes not far over.
10' ESCAPE FOR ARSENAL
Reading carve Arsenal open down the right. Pogrebnyak advances in on goal, but when he releases the final pass McAnuff is just unable to force the ball home from the edge of the six-yard box.
7' WIDE FROM WALCOTT
Wilshere is fouled 25 yards from goal. Walcott goes for a curling effort round the wall, but it is wide of the post and Federici looked like he had it covered anyway.
4' ON THE DEFENSIVE
Both Arsenal's full-backs, Gibbs and Sagna, are looking to get forward at every opportunity. Reading's defence is in for a thorough examination tonight.
2' FINE STOP FROM FEDERICI
Arsenal launch a superb early counter-attack. Oxlade-Chamberlain carries the ball forward, collects the return pass from Cazorla and forces Federici into a fine stop low to his right.
1' HERE WE GO
Arsenal kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' PREVIEW
The meeting between these two clubs in the League Cup back in October produced 12 goals and one of the games of the season, but it's fair to say either manager would take the scrappiest, ugliest and luckiest of performances tonight as long as they have a victory to show for their efforts. Reading dropped to the foot of the table after QPR's 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday. Six points from safety, they already have the look of a side doomed to the briefest of flirtations with the Premier League. It's little surprise in truth, looking at the strength of their squad. The Royals spent a comparatively modest £5 million in the summer and new Russian owner Anton Zingarevich will likely resist the temptation to put his hand in his pocket and give Brian McDermott some shiny new toys to play with in January with a return to the Championship looking a near-certainty. Arsenal, by contrast, will be spending big in the upcoming transfer window if stories coming out of the Emirates are to be believed. Chief executive Ivan Gazidis met with disgruntled members of the Arsenal Supporters Trust in the aftermath of the Gunners' humiliating Carling Cup exit to Bradford last week and pledged that their would be substantial new investment in the team. Some of the visitors on show tonight are playing for their futures, and such has been their fall from grace even the position of the once-worshipped Arsene Wenger is coming under close scrutiny. Tonight's game kicks off at 2000GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Reading's leading scorer Adam Le Fondre has four goals, but only two of those have come from open play. Look for Nicky Shorey to be influential from set-pieces tonight. The full-back's corners caused Manchester United untold problems a fortnight ago and he is second behind Jobi McAnuff in team assists with four. Arsenal could do with a big performance from Santi Cazorla, who has four goals and five assists to his name. The Spaniard with the silky skills has looked like one of the buys of the summer at times and when he plays well, so do Arsenal. But he has only contributed a solitary assist in the last four games and that is one he would care to forget, as it was the shameful dive that won the Gunners one of their penalties against West Brom.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
These two sides have only met four times in the league, all in the past few years, with the Gunners having won all four. The last league meeting was at the Emirates on Apr. 19, 2008, with Arsenal winning 2-0 through goals from Emmanuel Adebayor (30 mins) and Gilberto Silva (38). The last league meeting at the Madejski resulted in a 3-1 win for the visitors, with goals from Mathieu Flamini, Adebayor and Aleksandr Hleb. The two sides have also met six times in Cup competitions, three times in the FA Cup and three times in the League Cup. On each occasion, Arsenal have been the team to progress.
0' FORM GUIDE
Reading start the night bottom of the table with nine points from 16 games. A draw would take them back above QPR on goal difference. Arsenal sit eighth with 24 points from 16 games. Victory at the Madejski would lift them up to fifth, just two points behind North London rivals Tottenham. Reading have won a solitary game this season, beating Everton 2-1 at home on Nov. 17. They have suffered five successive defeats since then. Arsenal won last time out at home to West Brom, but are in a disappointing run which has seen them win just two of their last seven in the league.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Reading strikers Jason Roberts (hip) and Pavel Pogrebnyak are both listed as doubtful starters. This game has come too soon for Jimmy Kebe (groin) and Jem Karacan (knee), both of whom have returned to training. Defender Sean Morrison (ankle) is out and Alex McCarthy is a long-term absentee. Olivier Giroud should be available for the Gunners after recovering from a thigh problem and Laurent Koscielny (thigh) may also return. Theo Walcott will have a late fitness test on his calf problem, while Andre Santos (stomach muscle) and midfielder Abou Diaby (thigh) remain sidelined.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Anthony Taylor, who has been a member of the Premier League's elite group of referees since 2010. Neither of the Manchester-based official's first two top-flight appointments of the season managed to produce an incident worthy of even a caution, but he has since sent off three players in his last eight Premier League outings: Swansea's Nathan Dyer against Everton, QPR's Stephane Mbia at Arsenal and, most recently, Newcastle's Fabricio Coloccini at Anfield. Taylor's assistants today are Andy Garratt and Gary Beswick, while Mark Clattenburg is the fourth official.
