Wigan Athletic vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' FT: WIGAN 0 ARSENAL 1
Arsenal move up to third in the table with a slender and, many would argue, undeserved victory at the DW Stadium. The goal came on the hour, after Theo Walcott went to ground in the box after a clumsy and ill-advised tackle from behind by Jean Beausejour. Mikel Arteta sent Ali Al Habsi the wrong way from the spot. The result was rough on Wigan. They were marginally the better side in the first half and wasted the best chance when Arouna Kone shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. Arsenal improved after the interval, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looking menacing down the right, but they never really looked like breaking the deadlock until the penalty award. Wigan's work-rate was exemplary and even after going behind they continued to believe they could grab something from the game, Kone forcing Szczesny into a good save low down and David Jones shooting narrowly wide. With their Boxing Day game against West Ham already postponed, Arsene Wenger will have a happier and more restful Christmas than he might have imagined after that humiliating League Cup defeat at Bradford.
90' WIDE FROM McARTHUR
Beausejour crosses from the left, but McArthur's left-foot shot goes wide.
90' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Santi Cazorla makes way for Laurent Koscielny.
90' WIGAN STILL PRESSING
A ricochet just won't fall for Wigan in the box and Mertesacker clears. There will be four minutes of stoppage time.
89' WIGAN SUBSTITUTION
Wigan make their final change. It's Jordi Gomez for Shaun Maloney.
88' GUNNERS ON COURSE FOR VICTORY
Famous last words, but the Wigan threat appears to be over and Arsenal look good for the points.
86' WIGAN BOOKING
Maloney is booked somewhat harshly for a shove on Coquelin.
82' OVER FROM FIGUEROA
Mertesacker does superbly to block a cross from Stam, with Kone there waiting to apply a final touch at the far post. Figueroa then shoots well over.
80' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Francis Coquelin replaces Lukas Podolski for Arsenal.
78' WIGAN SUBSTITUTION
Callum McManaman replaces Franco Di Santo for Wigan.
77' OVER FROM WALCOTT
Arsenal win a free-kick 25 yards from goal. Walcott's effort curls over the wall, but also just over the bar.
75' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is replaced by Aaron Ramsey.
74' JONES NARROWLY WIDE
McArthur tees up Jones just outside the area. His left-foot effort is sweetly struck, but goes just wide of the upright with Szczesny well beaten.
73' GOOD SAVE FROM SZCZESNY
Wigan threaten again. Kone cuts inside Sagna and Mertesacker and forces Szczesny into a better stop low down.
70' DEFLECTED SHOT
Figueroa's long-range effort deflects off Arteta and Szczesny makes an awkward save.
69' EAR WE GO
That warning for Di Santo was because he was wearing an earring, apparently. Was it an early Christmas present that he put on at half-time, or did the referee not spot it for the first 67 minutes of this match?
67' BOYCE ON TOP OF HIS GAME
That's magnificent defending from Boyce again. Cazorla's raking pass finds Oxlade-Chamberlain wide on the right. Walcott tries to step over the cross to leave Wilshere with a tap-in, but the Wigan defender reads the danger and cuts out the ball.
65' WORD OF WARNING
Franco Di Santo receives a warning from referee Jon Moss, but no-one seems to know why.
63' NOT BEAUSEJOUR'S DAY
Beausejour has a chance to make amends, but his cross-shot from the left wastes a great opening created by Maloney.
61' HARSH ON WIGAN
It's a goal out of nothing for the visitors. Beausejour got the wrong side of his man and, just like his reappearance out of the tunnel at the start of the second half, he was just fractionally late. There was contact and Walcott did not need any helping going to ground.
59' GOAL: WIGAN 0 ARSENAL 1
Walcott tumbles over a tackle from Beausejour and Arsenal have a penalty. Arteta scores from the spot.
56' GIBBS TO THE RESCUE
Mertesacker makes a mess of cutting out Beausejour's cross from the left and is relieved the well-placed Gibbs is there to clear the danger.
55' WILSHERE WAS WRONGED
Having seen that challenge by Wilshere on Maloney in slow motion at the interval, it was an absolute travesty the Arsenal man was booked. It was as good a tackle as you are likely to see.
53' WALL DOES ITS JOB
McArthur's foul on Oxlade-Chamberlain gives Arsenal a free-kick 30 yards from goal. Podolski's effort is straight into the six-man wall.
50' WALCOTT DENIED
Oxlade-Chamberlain again gets clear down the right and this time his pass does find Walcott, whose first-time shot is gratefully blocked by Al Habsi.
49' BOYCE A ROCK AT THE BACK
Oxlade-Chamberlain gets away down the right and looks to pick out Walcott, but not for the first time Boyce is alert to the danger and cuts out the final pass.
48' BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
Referee Jon Moss showed no sympathy for the late arrival of Jean Beausejour at the start of this second half. He allowed Arsenal to kick off while the big Honduran was still lumbering back to his position out on the left.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Arsenal get the second half under way. Neither side has made changes at the break.
45' HT: WIGAN 0 ARSENAL 0
It's goalless at the break after a surprisingly even half of football in which Wigan have worked tirelessly and been at least the equal of Arsenal. Ali Al Habsi made routine saves to deny Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski in the first 15 minutes as we expected the match to develop into the one-sided affair we saw at Reading on Monday. But Wigan matched a tireless work ethic with a real desire to put Arsenal on the back foot and actually created the one golden opportunity of the half. An incisive pass from Franco Di Santo put Arouna Kone clean through, but the Ivorian dragged a disappointing shot well wide of the far post with only Wojciech Scezesny to beat. Theo Walcott has seen a couple of efforts blocked, but the Gunners have been kept at arm's length for the most part.
45' FINAL WARNING
Referee Moss has a word with Maloney after his latest foul tackle on Wilshere. Those two have been having a right battle in this first half. Two minutes of stoppage time.
42' ARSENAL BOOKING
Jack Wilshere is booked for a poor tackle on Shaun Maloney. Wigan want a red card, but they're mistaken.
39' SOLID IN DEFENCE
Arsenal win another corner, but again Wigan repel the threat with little trouble. Can they keep this work-rate up in the second half? You would think they are bound to tire.
36' WALCOTT SHOT BLOCKED
Cazorla slips a pass inside to Walcott, whose shot is bravely blocked by Boyce. That has typified Wigan's attitude so far, they have really been up for the fight.
35' WINGER NEEDS A LIFT
It must be a slight concern for Arsene Wenger, the form of Oxlade-Chamberlain in recent months. At present the former Southampton man is a shadow of the winger who caused havoc for many a Premier League defence in the past.
32' THAT'S POOR FROM STAM
That's why Ronnie Stam is never given the ball. After finally collecting a pass he slices a Sunday League-style cross into the stand.
29' WILSHERE IN THE WARS
Wilshere is struggling with an injury inflicted to his leg by the studs of Jones. Arsenal are monitoring his progress but it looks like he will be able to continue.
26' READING THEY AIN'T
A quarter of the match gone and Wigan have certainly impressed. They have played without fear. We were expecting a carbon-copy of Arsenal's match at Reading on Monday, but this has been nothing like that so far.
24' KONE FLUFFS A GLORIOUS CHANCE
Dear, oh dear. Kone stays onside after collecting a pass from Di Santo. He beats Mertesacker for pace and only has Szczesny to beat, but drags his shot horribly wide.
22' WALCOTT EFFORT BLOCKED
Gibbs pulls the ball back for Walcott, whose low drive from the edge of the area is blocked.
20' MALONEY RETURNS
Maloney returns to the action, a great smear of Vaseline (note: other products are available) applied to the back of his head. The Wigan man's wound was as a result of accidentally being headed by Bacary Sagna.
19' MALONEY NEEDS TREATMENT
Shaun Maloney is off at the moment, having a cut to the back of his head attended to.
17' WELL OVER FROM PODOLSKI
Podolski shoots from 20 yards, but it sends the fans scattering for cover some 15 rows back in the stand behind the goal.
16' STAM'S ATTACKING THREAT
Arsenal look vulnerable down their left. On three occasions they have failed to track the run of Ronnie Stam from right-back but luckily for them Wigan have been blind to the attacking possibilities and chosen the wrong pass.
14' FAR FROM A FULL HOUSE
It's a foul day here in the North-West, but you can't help but notice the many empty seats inside the DW Stadium. Some might say if you can't fill your ground for the visit of Arsenal, even before Christmas, then you don't deserve a Premier League football club. Not me, of course.
12' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
Kone surges forward after a mistake by Cazorla, but he selfishly shoots instead of finding the better-placed Stam. Podolski then tests Al Habsi's reflexes at the other end.
11' AL HABSI KEEPS WIGAN LEVEL
Cazorla nutmegs McCarthy to set Arsenal off on a break. Arteta feeds Oxlade-Chamberlain outside him and his fierce shot to the near post is beaten away by Al Habsi.
9' WHAT A PASS FROM FIGUEROA
Figueroa delivers a jaw-droppingly good crossfield pass of 70 yards to Di Santo, who then over-hits his cross by 20 yards. If Santi Cazorla had played that pass we would be fawning over the Spaniard's ability.
6' WASTE OF A CROSSING CHANCE
Wigan have started impressively. Di Santo finds space to cross from wide on the right, but his delivery is disappointing with men waiting in the box.
4' INJURY PROBLEMS
Wigan's defensive problems are so acute that midfielder James McCarthy is being deployed as an emergency centre-back today.
2' EXPECTING A CLASSIC
What type of match is Robert Martinez expecting? He said: “It will be a typical Wigan-Arsenal game, open, with many chances and fast-flowing football.”
1' HERE WE GO
Wigan kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' TEAM NEWS
Wigan make three changes to the side that were beaten at Norwich. In come David Jones, Shaun Maloney and Franco Di Santo. Adrian Lopez is injured and Jordi Gomez and Mauro Boselli drop to the bench. Unsurprisingly, Arsene Wenger names the same side that mauled Reading on Monday.
0' PREVIEW
For the second time in six days Arsenal travel to one of the Premier League's struggling sides with the chance to pad their goal difference and silence their detractors. On Monday it was Reading, where they came away with a hugely impressive 5-2 victory and could quite easily have hit double figures had they not sat back for most of the second half with the win already in the bag. Today the task at hand is a trip to Wigan, another side whose defence leaks goals and who have been in freefall in recent weeks. This again looks set up for Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott and Co. to have their way, especially as Robert Martinez's men are decimated by injury. Arsenal won 4-0 at the DW Stadium last season and it is easy to foresee a similar sort of scoreline again today. And everyone knows that Wigan don't start playing until the end of March when their Premier League lives depend on it. The last time to the Gunners came here at the end of the season they were also turned over in a quite memorable match where Wigan came back from two goals down to win 3-2, capped by a last-minute goal by Charles N'Zogbia. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Arsene Wenger called on Theo Walcott to sign a new long-term deal with the Gunners on Friday, saying the England winger owed a debt to the Gunners for his development. One of the stumbling blocks over the new contract has been Walcott's desire to get a commitment that the Frenchman will play him through the centre as opposed to out wide. Anyone who saw Arsenal's demolition of Reading on Monday will feel this is a no-brainer, as Walcott's pace simply destroyed the Berkshire outfit and gave Arsenal a new dimension in attack. Expect him to again be preferred to Olivier Giroud in attack. Santi Cazorla netted a hat-trick against Reading, taking his total for the season to seven. He has a team-high six assists as well and has been particularly devastating against the struggling clubs. Watch out Wigan.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Arsenal have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 10 wins to two by Wigan and two games being drawn. At the DW Stadium, Arsenal have four wins, Wigan one and there have been two draws. The corresponding match last season took place on Dec. 3 and ended in a 4-0 win for the Gunners with goals from Mikel Arteta (28 mins), Thomas Vermaelen (29), Gervinho (61) and Robin van Persie (78). But as part of their annual great escape act, Wigan went to the Emirates on Apr. 16 and came away with a 2-1 win, Franco Di Santo and Jordi Gomez netting early goals for the visitors and Thomas Vermaelen replying for Arsenal.
0' FORM GUIDE
Wigan sit in 18th place, with 15 points from 17 games. Only Newcastle and Reading have picked up fewer than the Latics' four points over the last six games and Roberto Mancini's men have lost five of their last seven. Fifth-placed Arsenal have 27 points from their 17 games. They have won their last two and have been beaten just once in the last seven outings.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Wigan again have major injury problems, with Adrian Lopez (hamstring), Ben Watson (broken leg), Ryo Miyaichi (ankle) and Albert Crusat (knee) all out for some time. Unlikely to play in this game are Ivan Ramis (hamstring), Antolin Alcaraz (groin) and James McCarthy (ankle), though all three have some chance of featuring over Christmas, while captain Gary Caldwell is rated 50-50 after a hamstring problem. For Arsenal, Andre Santos (stomach muscle) and Abou Diaby (thigh) remain sidelined, but otherwise they report a clean bill of health.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Jon Moss, who was appointed to the select group of referees in June 2011. Born in Sunderland, but now living in Leeds, Moss has shown 23 yellow cards in the eight top-flight matches he has officiated this season. He was heavily criticised by Everton manager David Moyes over his decision to send off Steven Pienaar at Queen's Park Rangers, the only red card he has produced this season. Moyes, to the point as ever, called it a “rubbish decision”. Moss' assistants today are Peter Kirkup and Ceri Richards, while Mark Halsey is the fourth official.
