Swansea City vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' SWANSEA 1, MAN UNITED 1.
It's all over at the Liberty Stadium, as Manchester United's best efforts couldn't break down a determined Swansea side. The first half was wide open; the second not so. Chance after chance fell to the visitors but, denied twice by the bar and countless times by Ashley Williams' blocks, they couldn't find a winner.
90' FULL TIME
Swansea City survive a second half domination for a well-deserved point!
90' GIGGS EFFORT
Michel Vorm races out and heads the ball away. Ryan Giggs tries to improvise with a backwards volley. It has a nice arc but travels wide of the post.
90' YELLOW CARD
Paul Scholes receives his customary yellow card for a late and ultimately pointless challenge.
87' HOLDING ON
With the final few minutes upon us, Swansea are now resigned to holding onto a point. Ryan Giggs has really brought a touch of class to United, as this time his clever flick on almost gives Young a free shot on goal. Ashley Williams naturally makes the block.
86' SUBSTITUTION
Itay Shechter comes on for Kemy Agustien.
84' UNITED STILL PUSHING
Manchester United are still pushing for a winner, and they are creating some really promising positions, but nothing has really troubled Vorm in the last few minutes. One last throw of the dice as Paul Scholes replaces Michael Carrick.
79' MORE CHANCES FOR UNITED
The climax of this second half is reaching the heights of the first and more. Goalbound shots from Javier Hernandez and Ashley Young are blocked valiantly by Ben Davies. Young is adamant he should have a penalty for handball. Davies did use his arm, but it would have been hard to avoid. Still, I'm sure Sir Alex Ferguson will mention that in the post-match conference.
78' CROSSBAR DENIES CARRICK
Manchester United almost double their lead, once again from a Robin van Persie corner. This time, thanks to woeful marking, Michael Carrick is allowed a free header, but the faintest of touches from Michel Vorm tips the ball onto the bar.
75' TEMPERS FLARING
The great football decends to chaos on the pitch. A free kick is awarded to Manchester United and Ashley Williams is furious, accusing RVP of simulation, while the Dutchman is furious about William's reaction. Both are booked, and the resulting free kick is poor from Rooney, who is promptly replaced by Ryan Giggs.
72' ANOTHER CHANCE WASTED!
It's another golden chance for the visitors, who once again panic in front of goal. Wayne Rooney tries to pull the ball back for Javier Hernandez, who would have a simple tap-in, but the English international gets his footing all wrong and barely manages to kick the ball, let alone find the Mexican.
71' GOOD CHANCE FOR HERNANDEZ
Michael Carrick feeds in Robin van Persie, who guides the ball towards Javier Hernandez first time, but the Mexican's touch evades him and the chance is spurned as Michel Vorm recovers to collect Hernandez's weak effort.
69' SUBSTITUTION
Luke Moore replaces Jonathan de Guzman, and Wayne Rooney has been cautioned.
67' CROSSBAR
That's what Robin van Persie brings to the table - a touch of absolute brilliance. Wayne Rooney crosses it in from the left and Van Persie, with an ingenious touch of finesse, guides the ball over a helpless Michel Vorm on the volley with the inside of his foot, only to be denied by the crossbar.
65' POSSESSION IN FAVOUR OF UNITED
Manchester United are enjoying a good spell of possession, but don't look quite as imposing as in the first half. Mind you, neither do Swansea, who have scarcely troubled De Gea in this second period.
62' SWITCH AROUND
With that substitution, obviously a forward for a winger, Ashley Young seems to have moved over to the right, where Antonio Valencia was. Wayne Rooney is filling in on the left wing, with Hernandez partnering RVP up front.
60' SUBSTITUTION
Both sides bring a fresh pair of legs on. Javier Hernandez - the winning goalscorer in this fixture last year - replaces Antonio Valencia, while Sung-Yueng Ki replaces Leon Britton for the hosts.
58' YELLOW CARD
Chico Flores is the first man to go into the book for the Swans. The resulting free kick is well-struck by Wayne Rooney, but it's straight at Michel Vorm.
55' HERNANDEZ WARMING UP
Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie don't look on top of their game today, and have been largely wasteful in front of goal. Sir Alex isn't a patient man and immediately sends goal-machine Javier Hernandez to warm up.
52' TREMENDOUS BLOCK FROM WILLIAMS
Williams to the rescue once again for Swansea! The ball was lost very cheaply by Swansea, and Manchester United momentarily outnumbered the home side's defence. A poor ball from RVP almost spurned the chance, but Rooney managed to spot the run of Ashley Young, who has time to measure up and get the shot away. Out of nowhere, Ashley Williams risks life and limb and makes the block.
51' DE GEA CALLED INTO ACTION
Kemy Agustien tries his luck from outside the area and the ball bounces awkwardly in front of De Gea, who does well to hold onto the ball. Moments later, he parries a Wayne Routledge effort round the post.
49' GOOD WORK FROM WILLIAMS
Robin van Persie lets the ball run through to Wayne Rooney, who is in a one-on-one situation, but Ashley Williams tracks back well to block to shot and quell the danger.
47' STILL GOING STRONG
Sir Alex Ferguson turns 71 on New Years Eve, and he's still going strong. A minor decision goes against RVP and the boss starts ranting on the touchline in classic Fergie style.
46' KICK OFF
We're off again. Both sides are unchanged at the break.
45' FIRST HALF SUMMARY
Well, it's been a real spectacle at the Liberty Stadium so far. We knew this game had goals in it, and despite the modest scoreline, there has been some fantastic attacking movement from both sides. Both teams had chances aplenty, but it was Manchester United who took the lead through Patrice Evra, who headed home from a corner. An equaliser was almost inevitable when you consider United's defensive inadequacies and Swansea's threat. The equaliser came from Michu (of course) who latched onto Jonathan de Guzman's rebounded effort. In a game so wide open, one apiece is probably a fair score at the interval.
45' HALF TIME
Michael Oliver calls time on an excellent 45 minutes of football. Swansea City 1, Manchester United 1.
45' GREAT CHANCE FOR ROONEY
Patrice Evra gets the better of Dwight Tiendalli and squares the ball to Wayne Rooney. The ball comes at him fast, and his can't manage a convincing finish with his left foot.
43' DECISION AGAINST ROONEY
Manchester United get forward this time, and the attack culminates in a Wayne Rooney shot. His effort takes a clear deflection, but the ref fails to notice. Rooney's subsequent protests are in vain.
42' ANOTHER DECENT MOVE
It's another intricate move from Swansea, as Wayne Routledge and Jonathan de Guzman play a one-two on the edge of the box, but Routledge gets the delivery all wrong.
38' GOOD FOOTBALL
The game still has an attractive flow to it, and the end-to-end theme continues. There is, however, more action at the Manchester United end, as the Swans continue to grow in confidence.
36' DE GUZMAN SHOT
Tom Cleverley tries to usher the ball out of play but Jonathan de Guzman never gives up and eventually nicks the ball past Cleverley, but with a lack of options, his shot from an accute angle is easily stopped by De Gea.
34' SWANSEA LOOKING TO TAKE THE LEAD
The home side are definitely in the ascendancy now, and they know Michu can outrun Vidic from that earlier battle. The now league's top scorer almost adds a second, but can't quite reach an inviting ball from Wayne Routledge.
31' JONES LUCKY TO ESCAPE WITH YELLOW
Just before that goal, Phil Jones was booked for a late challenge on Leon Britton, but the home fans were hoping for a more severe punishment. Jones was late and reckless but a last-minute effort to pull out of the challenge may have just earned him a reprieve.
29' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a well-deserved goal for the hosts, who level with another eye-catching move. The final ball comes from Wayne Routledge, who gifts Jonathan De Guzman a chance on a plate. His shot is initially parried away but MICHU is on hand to tuck the rebound away.
29' GOOOAAALLL
Equaliser for Swansea. Guess who...
27' ANOTHER MICHU HALF-CHANCE
Michu gets another half-chance, and this time it's a headed effort from a Nathan Dyer cross. He can't quite trouble David de Gea though, but once again there's a threat from the Spaniard.
25' SWANSEA SURVIVE
Tom Cleverley's persistence on the edge of the area gives him a chance to square the ball to Rooney, who in turn finds Michael Carrick. The attack breaks down as Carrick's final ball is uncharacteristically inaccurate.
21' ANOTHER GOAL ON THE CARDS?
While Manchester United have the lead, you wouldn't count on them keeping a clean sheet, especially with Vidic looking as out of form as he does. You obviously can't rule out another United goal, though.
18' WHISTLE DENIES DE GUZMAN
The crowd are infuriated, and rightly so. Jonathan De Guzman is clean through on goal, but Michu is penalized for blocking Jonny Evans' path. It's a very tenuous call from the ref, but one greatly welcomed by the travelling supporters.
16' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Ashley Young almost put the visitors ahead after a beautifully weighted pass from Michael Carrick, but Michel Vorm denied the winger. The resulting corner was met by PATRICE EVRA, who heads into the far corner past Ben Davies, who should have been tighter to the post.
16' GOOOAAALLL
Patrice Evra scores from a RVP corner!
14' BOTH SIDES CREATING CHANCES
Shots from Michu and Wayne Rooney at both ends are handled well by the respective keepers, but there are certainly signs that a goal is coming - at which end is unclear.
12' BELIEF GROWING
Swansea City are beginning to believe that they can pull off an upset today, and it's all down to Michu outplaying the United defence. Jonathan De Guzman puts him through on goal with a curling pass using the outside of his boot, but the assistant flags for offside. On second viewing, Patrice Evra may have just been level with the Spaniard.
9' GREAT PACE
Manchester United were doing a good job of limiting Swansea to short passes across their defence, but a long ball from a defender almost proves fatal for United. Michu completely outpaces Nemanja Vidic, but at full pace on the volley, he can't get the ball on target.
6' GREAT MOVE FROM THE HOSTS
Out of nowhere, Swansea start a Brazil-esque move, moving the ball about seamlessly. Some one-touch exchanges on the edge of the area gives Dwight Tiendalli a chance to drill a ball across goal but there's hardly anyone in white ready to receive it.
4' NERVY START FOR THE SWANS
We saw Swansea giving United way too much respect last year, and they've started a little nervously here. They look uneasy on the ball and weak as Manchester United swarm forward.
2' EARLY CORNER
Ashley Young is afforded way too much space as the defence steps off. The winger picks out Wayne Rooney, whose blocked shot finds its way to Antonio Valencia on the right. There are half-hearted claims for handball from his cross but the ref awards a fruitless corner.
1' KICK OFF
Michael Oliver, the youngest referee in the league, gets the action underway at the Liberty Stadium.
0' MANCHESTER UNITED LINE-UP
Phil Jones comes in at right-back with Rafael suffering with a hamstring injury. Nemanja Vidic is back, he partners Jonny Evans at the heart of defence. A defensive injury could be a problem though, as Alex Buttner is Sir Alex's only defensive option on the bench. Back to 4-4-2 this week, as the Rooney-RVP partnership continues to blossom - Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck are among the substitutes though.
0' SWANSEA LINE-UP
Michel Vorm does make his return as he's thrown in at the deep end against the league's top scorers. Dwight Tiendalli deputises for the injured Angel Rangel, while the recovering Pablo Hernandez fails to make the team.

0' MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM NEWS
Manchester United's defence has not rivalled the form of their attack this term, holding a worse record than the surrounding teams in the Champions League spots. However, the return of Nemanja Vidic could tighten the operation at the back. The Serbian has been out since September but could be selected for the trip to Swansea. Rafael will miss out though, as will Shinji Kagawa.
0' SWANSEA TEAM NEWS
Swansea will be buoyed by the return of their first-choice keeper. Michel Vorm has been out for eight weeks after injuring his groin against Manchester City, but is expected to make his return today. Pablo Hernandez also becomes available to bolster the Swansea attack, while Angel Rangel is likely to sit this one out, still recovering from a calf injury.
0' HEAD-TO-HEAD
Today's game will be only the 19th meeting between these two clubs, but the results aren't as one-sided as you may think; eight wins for the Reds, six for the Swans. After 30 years without meeting, Sir Alex's men did the double over Swansea last year though. Ashley Young and Paul Scholes were the scorers at Old Trafford, while Javier Hernandez's 11th minute goal proved the difference at the Liberty Stadium.
0' THERE'S GOALS IN THIS ONE
We have some of the finest attacking talent in the country on display today, including the top two scorers in the top flight. Robin van Persie and Michu could really decide the bearing on this game – with 12 goals apiece so far, a good day at the office for either of them could prove pivotal. However, the difference in quality could be apparent in the rest of the team – 20 of Swansea's 23 goals have come from their main man, while United's impressive 43 goals this season have been shared between 15 players.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
Today's early kick off sees top-of-the-tree Manchester United travel to the Liberty Stadium in the hope of restoring the six point gap between themselves and their cross-city counterparts. If they can do so, they will guarantee top spot come the New Year – a luxury Sir Alex has only been afforded seven times in his Manchester United career. But surely Mr. Ferguson's illusive 20th title should come in the standard comeback fashion? Well, it could still do – six points is easily overturned, as City showed last season. Not willing to let the same disaster reoccur, Sir Alex has this week reinforced the importance of keeping the current run of form going into 2013. Swansea are feeling the burden of the December fixture list, losing the last two against Spurs and Norwich. Nevertheless, they can't be disappointed with their mid-table spot, and a surprise win today could see them leap up to eighth.
