Sunderland vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
90' WELL DESERVED
Sunderland beat Manchester City by a goal to nil at the Stadium of Light for the third successive season, as Adam Johnson comes back to haunt his old club – and his former teammate Joe Hart – with a speculative second half effort. There may have been an element of fortune about Sunderland's goal, the ball squeezing through the grasp of the England goalkeeper, but the home side were well worth the three points, recovering from a slow start to hold their own throughout the final hour of the match and creating the better of the second half chances. Martin O'Neill's side move seven points clear of the dropzone whilst the champions, who at one point this afternoon looked like reducing the deficit at the top the table to a single point, now find themselves seven points behind leaders Manchester United.
90' FULL TIME
Sunderland 1, Manchester City 0.
90' IT'S ALL OVER!
Silva's corner is cleared by the first defender and Kevin Friend blows for full time. What a result for the Black Cats!
90' A FINAL CHANCE?
City win another corner. We're into the dying seconds...
90' ALL OUT ATTACK
Joe Hart is up for David Silva's corner, but it's James Milner who meets the ball, volleying over the top.
90' ELSEWHERE...
Manchester United are 4-3 up at Old Trafford, Javier Hernandez scoring deep in Fergie time. This is turning into a very bad afternoon for Manchester City.
90' SUBSTITUTION
Two more changes: Javi Garcia and Danny Rose make way, as Joleon Lescott and Phil Bardsley come on.
87' WIDE!
Another great chance for the Mackems to kill the game goes begging, as James McClean drags an effort wide of Joe Hart's goal. Will City break Sunderland hearts in the closing seconds?
86' SUBSTITUTION
Gareth Barry is on for Kolo Toure.
84' CAMPBELL CHANCE
A big chance for Sunderland as the ball drops to Fraizer Campbell, who fires straight at the body of Joe Hart. Little more than five minutes of regulation time are left on the clock.
83' INTO THE CLOSING STAGES
City are running out of time to find an equaliser; Milner's free kick is nodded away by Fletcher, before Aguero hits the deck, claiming a penalty. Referee Kevin Friend waves play on.
80' SESSEGNON CHANCE
Sessegnon has the opportunity to win the game for the Black Cats, latching onto a hopeful punt over the top. Joe Hart goes some way to making amends for the goal, however, by sprinting off his line to deny the Sunderland forward.
79' SUBSTITUTION
Sunderland make a switch, as Fraizer Campbell comes on for Seb Larsson.
77' FINE 'KEEPING
More alert goalkeeping from Simon Mignolet preserves the Mackems' lead. First the Belgian gobbles up Aguero's low effort, before keeping his eye on the ball to deny Dzeko as the substitute fires a low effort through a crowded penalty area.
75' OVER THE BAR
City win a free kick in a shooting position, around 25 yards from goal. Yaya Toure and James Milner stand over the ball, before the England midfielder lifts an effort over the wall and clear of Mignolet's crossbar.
73' ELSEWHERE...
It's now 3-3 at Old Trafford, Robin van Persie equalising after Papiss Cisse had put Newcastle 3-2 in front.
72' SUBSTITUTION
Roberto Mancini makes a change, as Edin Dzeko replaces Carlos Tevez.
69' SUPER STOP
Great stuff from Simon Mignolet, denying Sergio Aguero with an outstretched hand. The Sunderland ‘keeper has had a brilliant afternoon between the sticks.
67' DESPERATE DEFENDING
Heroic defending from the hosts, as men in red, white and black hurl themselves into the path of shots from Milner and Aguero. We could be in for a storming final 20 minutes.
64' ON THE BRINK
Vincent Kompany, who is on a booking, receives a final warning from Kevin Friend after clobbering into James McClean. There are a few frayed tempers out there now.
61' CLEARING THEIR LINES
Sunderland clear a Milner corner after Yaya Toure's shot is deflected wide. Half an hour left to play in the North East.
60' GREAT CROSS
Sunderland are buoyant on the break now. McClean curls a top-drawer ball into the City area, but Sessegnon is just unable to convert.
60' ELSEWHERE...
More bad news for Mancini and co. Manchester United have equalised against Newcastle at Old Trafford, Patrice Evra levelling the scores at 2-2.
58' BOOKING
Matija Nastasic has his name taken by the referee after crunching into James McClean.
57' BUTTERFINGERS
An opening for City as Mignolet fumbles a cross, but the Sunderland ‘keeper is able to smother the ball at the second attempt.
55' ALMOST A SECOND!
Stephane Sessegnon almost doubles his side's lead, dancing his way through the City defence before firing an effort wide of the shell-shocked Hart's net.
53' GOAL - JOHNSON
Would you believe it? Sunderland grab the lead at the Stadium of Light, as ADAM JOHNSON tries his luck with a low left-footed effort which slips under the body of the sprawling Joe Hart and nestles in the back of the net. Roberto Mancini is furious on the touchline, both with his goalkeeper and a tasty-looking challenge on Pablo Zabaleta by Craig Gardner in the build-up to Johnson's speculative effort. Sunderland 1, Manchester City 0.
51' MACKEMS PRESSURE
A pair of Sunderland corners, from Larsson and Johnson, are bundled away by City. The hosts appear to have picked up where they left off at the end of the first half.
50' OVER THE BAR
Yaya Toure meets Silva's corner, but the Ivorian's header skews clear of Mignolet's crossbar.
48' END-TO-END
David Silva's deflected shot almost breaks into the path of Carlos Tevez, but Sunderland bring the ball away and counter through Adam Johnson. The former City winger appears to savouring the face-off with his old club.
46' KICK OFF - SECOND HALF
We're back playing at the Stadium of Light.
45' HALF TIME SUMMARY
It's goalless at the interval at the Stadium of Light, after an entertaining opening 45 minutes between Sunderland and Manchester City. The champions dominated the opening exchanges, Vincent Kompany clipping the crossbar and Yaya Toure and David Silva forcing fine saves from Simon Mignolet. The Mackems responded well, however, and created the best opening of the game when Steven Fletcher drew a brilliant stop from Joe Hart. We'll be back in a few moments with all the second half action.
45' HALF TIME
Sunderland 0, Manchester City 0.
45' BLOCKED!
Seb Larsson's effort cannons away off the City defensive wall.
44' BOOKING
Kompany blocks off Sessegnon on the edge of the City box. The Belgian earns himself a caution, while Sunderland have a free kick in a threatening position.
42' OFF TARGET
Stephane Sessegnon meets Gardner's cross with a firm header, thumping the ball wide of Joe Hart's net.
39' BOOKING
Jack Colback sees yellow after toppling Sergio Aguero.
37' INTERCEPTION
Another crucial intervention from Kompany, who nicks the ball away from Fletcher at the vital moment. Sunderland have really grown in stature over the last ten minutes or so.
36' LEADING FROM THE BACK
Vincent Kompany is having a stormer at the back for City. The Belgian defender rises highest again to head a James McClean cross clear.
34' SOLDIERING ON
Zabaleta, by the way, is back on the pitch, complete with staples, a bandage and a clean shirt.
33' PENALTY SHOUT
Sunderland are visibly growing in confidence; Johnson jinks past Zabaleta, before seeing a cross nodded clear by Kompany. Fletcher and Matija Nastasic then tangle in the box, but Kevin Friend is unmoved by the Mackems' penalty appeals.
31' ELSEWHERE...
Newcastle are now 2-1 up at Old Trafford. Could this prove to be a crucial afternoon in the title race?
29' BREAK IN PLAY
There's a lengthy stoppage, as Pablo Zabaleta receives treatment for a head injury after coming off on the worse end of a challenge with Fletcher.
26' GREAT EFFORT
So close for Sunderland! The Black Cats almost catch the champions on the break, Fletcher firing off a low, powerful shot which is brilliantly saved by Joe Hart. Best effort of the game so far.
24' SILVA EFFORT
Lovely stuff from Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, who combine brilliantly to cut through the Sunderland defence before laying the ball back to David Silva. The Spaniard pokes it goalwards, but Mignolet is again able to make a crucial stop.
22' GETTING INTO THE GAME
After weathering that early storm, Sunderland are starting to see a little more of the ball. Can they begin to provide some service for the clinical Steven Fletcher?
20' WASTED
...which is fired woefully high and wide of the target.
19' FOUL!
An opening for the Mackems, as Danny Rose is upended 30 yards from goal after Craig Gardner's shot cannons out of the City penalty area. Gardner lines up the resulting free kick...
17' CHARGED DOWN
Milner's outswinging corner is half-cleared by the Black Cats, before Kompany's snapshot is blocked by Jack Colback. It's been attack vs. defence at the Stadium of Light during the opening quarter of an hour.
14' LUCKY ESCAPE
Stephane Sessegnon is a tad lucky to escape a booking after hacking down Jame Milner. Perhaps, referee Kevin Friend is in a charitable mood, what with it being Christmas and all.
12' FINE SAVE
The visitors threaten again, as Yaya Toure forces Mignolet into another fine stop with a curling effort after working a neat one-two with Sergio Aguero.
9' OVER THE TOP
Jeers ring around the Stadium of Light as David Silva gets under a free kick, launching the ball into the fans behind the Sunderland net. City well on top so far.
8' OFF THE BAR
City go close to taking the lead, as Vincent Kompany rattles the crossbar from David Silva's corner kick. Yaya Toure attempts to poke home the rebound, but Simon Mignolet makes an excellent save to keep the scores level.
7' FREE KICK
Another Sunderland set-piece is floated towards Joe Hart's far-post, where the England ‘keeper punches away. An odd decision from the City goalkeeper – that looked a simple catch for a stopper of his quality.
6' FREE KICK
Adam Johnson lofts a free kick into the City penalty area, but Javi Garcia is on hand to nod clear for the visitors.
5' ELSEWHERE...
Good news for City – Newcastle have taken an early lead at Old Trafford through a James Perch goal.
3' TEASING CROSS
A bright start from the champions, this. James Milner whips a promising cross into the Sunderland area, but no-one in a sky blue shirt is able to make the vital touch.
3' TACTICS TALK
Kolo Toure has lined up at right back for City, with Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic in the centre of the visitors' defence. How will the veteran get on against James McClean this afternoon?
1' KICK OFF
Sunderland get us underway at the Stadium of Light.
0' TEAM NEWS
John O'Shea misses out for Sunderland, as Matthew Kilgallon returns to the Black Cats' starting XI. Adam Johnson and Sebastian Larsson are both passed fit for the hosts. Roberto Mancini, meanwhile, makes two changes to the Manchester City side that started the victory over Reading. Karim Rekik and Gareth Barry make way, as Vincent Kompany and James Milner start for the visitors.
0' FULL LINE-UP - MANCHESTER CITY

Mignolet, Gardner, Rose, Kilgallon, Cuellar, Larsson, Colback, Johnson, McClean, Sessegnon, Fletcher. Subs: Bardsley, Campbell, Wickham, McFadden, Vaughan, Bramble, Westwood.
0' REF WATCH
Kevin Friend, from Leicestershire, will oversee events at the Stadium of Light this afternoon. The 41-year-old has taken charge of 10 Premier League matches so far this season, showing 38 yellow cards and dismissing just one player, Stoke City's Dean Whitehead, during the Potters opening day draw at the Madejski Stadium.
0' SQUAD NEWS
Adam Johnson's dead leg may prevent the Sunderland winger from lining up against his old club, whilst Sebastian Larsson could miss out with a knee injury. City captain Vincent Kompany should be fit to start for the visitors, whilst Mario Balotelli is available again after illness. Samir Nasri is ruled out with a hamstring problem, and Gael Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov both face late fitness tests.
0' FESTIVE FIXTURES
This afternoon's match-up with the champions marks the start of an imposing Christmas programme for the Mackems; Sunderland host Tottenham at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, before travelling to Anfield on January 2nd. City, meanwhile, follow today's clash with a tricky-looking weekend trip to Carrow Road, before facing Tony Pulis's Stoke at the Etihad on New Year's Day.
0' PREVIOUS MEETINGS
The champions ran out comfortable winners when these sides last met in the Premier League back in October, as Aleksandar Kolarov, Sergio Aguero and James Milner all hit the back of the net in a 3-0 City victory at the Etihad Stadium. The Black Cats found more success in two memorable encounters with Roberto Mancini's men last term, however. Ji Dong Won's late strike wrapped up all three points for Sunderland at the Stadium Light on New Year's Day, and Martin O'Neill's side looked set to complete an unlikely double as they led 3-1 heading into the final five minutes of the reverse fixture at the end of March. Late goals from Mario Balotelli and Kolarov salvaged a point for the Citizens – a point that was to prove crucial come the end of the season.
0' PREVIEW
Manchester City will be looking to keep up the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester United this afternoon, as the reigning champions travel to Wearside to take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Gareth Barry's late winner against Reading, in combination with a gutsy Swansea performance against the Red Devils, has left Roberto Mancini's men just four points behind their local rivals and with a sense of momentum heading into the busy festive period. Nonetheless, the Citizens will expect to face a stern test from a Black Cats side that deprived them of four points last term, and who come into this fixture on the back of recent wins over relegation rivals Reading and Southampton. The game kicks off at 1500GMT; join us for all of the team news and build-up from 1415GMT.
