Norwich City vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' FULL-TIME REPORT
It was a game of few chances and few moments of brilliance but Juan Mata's 40th minute strike was worthy of winning any game. The Spaniard cut in from an inside-right position before bending a precise curling effort past Mark Bunn in the Norwich City goal. Chelsea were never really troubled over the entire 90 minutes and weren't left collectively holding their breath until the second minute of stoppage time when Sebastien Bassong headed over the bar. But anything other than a win for Rafa Benitez's team would have been scandalous and the Blues held on to keep in touch with the Manchester teams and gain their first Boxing Day win since 2005.
90' FULL-TIME WHISTLE
That's it. It's finished Norwich City 0 Chelsea 1.
90' BASSONG HEADS OVER
Ashley Cole hooks the resulting free-kick over the bar for a corner kick. Sebastien Bassong rises to meet the resulting set piece but heads the ball into the ground and over the crossbar. That could be that.
90' THREE MINUTES ADDED ON
Norwich have three minutes of added on time to try and find and equaliser. Eden Hazard goes into the book for a professional foul on Russell Martin to give Norwich a chance to throw bodies into the box. Meanwhile Juan Mata is replaced by young Nathan Ake.
89' HAZARD FOR CANARIES
Eden Hazard links well with Frank Lampard after a mix-up between Mark Bunn and Sebastien Bassong but the Belgian's left-footed shot is smothered well by Bunn. Elliott Bennett replaces Wes Hoolahan for the home side.
87' RISKY NORWICH PLAY
Norwich seem hell-bent on shooting themselves in the foot here. Sebastien Bassong is insistent on playing the ball out from defence but puts his team in trouble and Fernando Torres' backheel almost picks out Juan Mata.
85' CHELSEA COMFORTABLE
Norwich have failed to create many chances at all but credit must go to Chelsea for a fairly sturdy defensive performance. If they can keep that going for another seven minutes or so, they will be heading back to west London with another three points.
83' JOHNSON DIVE
Bradley Johnson becomes the first player to go into the book after going down easily under David Luiz's challenge. He is cautioned for simulation and has little cause for complaint. That is his last piece of action as Jonny Howson comes on in his place.
81' MATA HEADER
Cesar Azpilcueta's cross finds, of all people, the head of Juan Mata in the Norwich penalty box but the Spaniard's glancing header rolls wide.
80' CHANGES FOR BOTH
Norwich City make their first change with Anthony Pilkington coming off and being replaced by striker Steve Morison. He'll line up alongside Grant Holt. Meanwhile Eden Hazard is on for Victor Moses for Chelsea.
78' CHELSEA COUNTER
Norwich are having plenty of possession now but Chelsea are so dangerous on the counter attack. Oscar and Frank Lampard link up but the England international can't pick out the run of Juan Mata.
74' LAMPARD ON
In an attempt to regain midfield superiority, Chelsea introduce Frank Lampard in place of John Obi Mikel.
70' MOSES MISS
Victor Moses has spurned an outstanding chance for Chelsea to double their lead. Cesar Azpilcueta's cross picked out the winger, who chested the ball down before lashing towards goal but it smashed against the advertising hoardings rather than the back of the net.
68' NORWICH OPTIONS
The Canaries do have option from the bench. Simeon Jackson and Steve Morison have forged their careers in the lower divisions but are more than capable of finding a goal in the Premier League. Jonny Howson, too, is a creative midfielder who can provide a spark. Meanwhile, Robert Snodgrass goes down under pressure from Branislav Ivanovic but the referee waves play on and the Scot doesn't complain too much.
65' ANOTHER LUIZ LONG-RANGER
David Luiz has his third long range attempt of the game and, like his previous two efforts, the ball ends up in row Z. Luiz can afford a smile at the moment but he won't be able to if Norwich can find an equaliser.
63' PILKINGTON BUNDLE
Anthony Pilkington tries to jink his way between Azpilcueta and Cahill but he scuffs his effort on goal and the ball rolls along the sodden turf into Cech's gloves.
62' HOOLAHAN KEY
The rain is absolutely pouring down in East Anglia and Norwich seem to be peaking in these conditions, enjoying much more possession than they enjoyed in the opening period. As the link between Grant Holt and the midfield, Wes Hoolahan could hold the key to the Canaries getting back in this.
57' MATA IMPROVISATION
Juan Mata nearly catches Mark Bunn out with a quick free-kick but the ex-Northampton goalkeeper scampers across the line to deny him a second goal.
56' NORWICH COUNTER
That was a great move from Norwich City. A slick counter attack ends in Hoolahan slotting the ball through for Grant Holt who puts it just wide of Petr Cech's goal. He was flagged offside anyway but at least that move has helped the Carrow Road faithful find their voices again.
53' HOOLAHAN PUSHED UP
Norwich have pushed Wes Hoolahan further forward alongside Grant Holt but so far that's having little effect. On the contrary, Chelsea are continuing their dominance as Cesar Azpilcueta's tempting delivery narrowly evades the Blues' attackers.
51' BLUES PRESSURE
Oscar's inswinging corner nearly goes straight in at the near post but Mark Bunn parries the ball out. From the resulting corner kick, Ashley Cole fires a long way wide.
49' COMPOSED CHELSEA
Chris Hughton's side must find a way of scoring an equaliser - but they need to get the ball back off the Blues first. It's been a composed start to the half from the visitors.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
We are back underway in Norwich. Neither side has chosen to make any changes to the players that finished the first half.
45' HALF-TIME REPORT
It was going to take something extraordinary to break down this Norwich City defence and, when it came, it certainly was. Juan Mata's precise, curling finish was the only Chelsea effort to find the back of Mark Bunn's net in a half that they dominated. The Canaries sat extremely deep, laying down a challenge for the likes of Mata and Oscar, and for a while it worked. But Chris Hughton's side will have to be more ambitious in the second period if they are not continue their excellent run of form in front of their own supporters.
45' HALF-TIME
That's half-time at Carrow Road. The score is Norwich City 0 Chelsea 1.
43' NORWICH REACT
Norwich have reacted well since conceding. Anthony Pilkington twists and turns on the edge of the Chelsea area before squaring the ball across and forcing Ashley Cole to concede a corner kick. Nothing comes of the set piece, though.
41' MATA MAGIC
He's been fantastic in this first half and now he has broken Norwich's dogged defence. After good interplay between Oscar and the Spaniard, Mata bends the ball into the corner of Mark Bunn's net from 20 yards out. Fantastic strike.
39' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Fantastic goal from Juan Mata!
38' MOSES COMES ALIVE
Victor Moses shrugs off Robert Snodgrass before beating Russell Martin and pulling the ball back across goal. Michael Turner directs it over the bar for a corner kick. From the corner, Juan Mata sees Bradley Johnson in the way of his goal-bound effort.
35' MIKEL BLASTS OVER
David Luiz storms forward again and feeds Juan Mata who crosses the ball in for Victor Moses. Moses' shot is blocked and the ball falls to John Obi Mikel who blasts over the top of Mark Bunn's goal from the edge of the area. The Nigerian hasn't scored in six years and it certainly shows.
33' ALL CHELSEA
Norwich have barely been out of their own half in the past ten minutes or so. At the minute, it seems only a matter of time before Chelsea break the deadlock.
31' MATA POKES WIDE
That's the best chance of the game. David Luiz drives forward again before sliding in Juan Mata inside the box. Mata tries to poke the ball into the back of the net but can only hit the side netting of Mark Bunn's goal. That's a big let-off for Norwich who are dropping very deep, which could be a risky tactic.
30' HEAVY TOUCH
After patient build-up play from Chelsea, David Luiz picks out Ashley Cole with an excellent pass but Cole's touch is heavy and the Canaries defence can clear to safety.
26' MATA SNUFFED OUT
Juan Mata finds space to receive the ball from Cesar Azpilcueta on the edge of the Norwich box. However Michael Turner can close down the space before Mata can deliver towards Fernando Torres.
25' LACK OF QUALITY AT BOTH ENDS
Javier Garrido gets in a great position down the left but his cross is behind Wes Hoolahan and is easily cleared by Chelsea. At the other end, Luiz attempts to bend the ball into the top right hand corner of goal but it is again off-target. Quality in the final third is lacking at the moment.
21' LUIZ SLASH
Perhaps irked by his lack of activity so far, Luiz tries to do something about it, marching forward from midfield and striking the ball at goal from 35 yards. It does, however, go high, wide and handsome.
19' LUIZ QUIET
David Luiz hasn't had the influence on the match that he enjoyed against Aston Villa at the weekend. Norwich's midfield trio are making life hard for him with Bradley Johnson the player to most recently shove Luiz off the ball.
16' LIMITED OPPORTUNITIES
Norwich have won their last five home games - the first time they have won five in a row in the top league since 1977. So far they are more than holding their own against Rafa Benitez's men but chances are few and far between.
11' LASHED WIDE
Norwich's first period of pressure ends in the ball falling to the advancing Alexander Tettey but the defensive midfielder lashes miles wide from the edge of the area.
9' SLOPPY TETTEY
Alexander Tettey gives the ball away in his own half and Juan Mata looks like he's going to take full advantage. However Tettey does well to get back in and snuff out the danger before Mata can create an opening.
7' SNODGRASS WARNED
Jon Moss has to have a word with Robert Snodgrass about a late tackle on Oscar. The Scot didn't make contact with the Brazilian but the studs were up. It's just a warning though.
5' LIVELY START
It's been a lively start at Carrow Road but Chelsea, in free-scoring mood, have been unable to breach Norwich's steadfast defence so far.
1' WE'RE OFF
Referee Jon Moss blows his whistle and begins this Boxing Day fixture at Carrow Road. Norwich are in their traditional yellow shirts with Chelsea wearing their white away kit.
0' HOLT BUT NO HAZARD
The teams are in and David Luiz does indeed retain his place in Chelsea's engine room. John Obi Mikel comes in alongside him with Frank Lampard having to make do with a place on the Chelsea bench. Eden Hazard is also relegated to the bench with Oscar preferred to the dynamic Belgian. Grant Holt is passed fit to lead the line for the home side who otherwise start the match as expected.
0' CONFIRMED CHELSEA LINE-UP
Petr Cech; Cesar Azpilcueta, Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole; John Obi Mikel, David Luiz; Oscar, Juan Mata, Victor Moses; Fernando Torres. Bench: Ross Turnbull, Paulo Ferreira, Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard, Marko Marin, Nathan Ake, Lucas Piazon.
0' CONFIRMED NORWICH LINE-UP
Mark Bunn; Russell Martin, Michael Turner, Sebastien Bassong, Javier Garrido; Robert Snodgrass, Wes Hoolahan, Alexander Tettey, Bradley Johnson, Anthony Pilkington; Grant Holt. Bench: Declan Rudd, Leon Barnett, Ryan Bennett, Jonny Howson, Elliott Bennett, Simeon Jackson, Steve Morison.
0' REF WATCH
Jon Moss is the man in the middle today. The Sunderland-born referee has taken charge of eight Premier League matches so far this season and handed out 26 bookings and just one red card - statistics that won't strike too much fear into the tacklers on either side today.
0' LUIZ OR MIKEL
Having deputised admirably in the absence of John Obi Mikel during the thrashing of Villa, David Luiz will be hoping to keep his place in midfield despite the Nigerian's return from suspension. John Terry is still not ready to make an appearance while Ryan Bertrand, a former Norwich City loanee, is a doubt with a groin injury.
0' HOLT COULD MISS OUT
Captain Grant Holt will need to convince the Canaries' medical staff that he has recovered from the hamstring injury which caused him to miss Saturday's defeat at West Brom - Norwich's first in ten matches. Elsewhere, full back Steven Whittaker joins a crowded treatment room at Carrow Road which already includes Ryan Bennett, John Ruddy and Andrew Surman.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
They're not inclined to chant his name from the Stamford Bridge stands just yet, but Chelsea's demolishing of Aston Villa on Sunday has done Rafa Benitez's reputation no harm at all. The Blues have scored 19 goals in their last four matches on British soil but now come up against a Norwich City side who are wounded after an impressive run of their own came to a halt at the weekend against West Brom. Chris Hughton's men remain firmly entrenched in mid-table security though and will fancy their chances of overcoming Chelsea. It would be the first time they have done so since December 1994 when fresh-faced debutant Ashley Ward found the net twice in a 3-0 win for the Norfolk side.
