90' FULL-TIME REPORT
Liverpool arrived at the Britannia Stadium fully aware of their recent woeful record against Stoke City. The Reds were yet to win there in the Premier League era but will have had high hopes that their luck was about to change tonight when Luis Suarez was fouled inside the area in the opening moments. Steven Gerrard converted to give Brendan Rodgers' men the lead, but that only served to anger the beast that is Stoke City on their home patch. Before the ten minute mark had arrived, the resurgent Potters had taken the lead - first Jonathan Walters equalised before Kenwyne Jones' stooping header added a second. Liverpool struggled to deal with Stoke's intensity throughout the game and when Walters added a third early in the second half, a Liverpool comeback looked rather unlikely. Luis Suarez toiled at the spearhead of the Reds' attack but his ability alone could not inspire the visitors who had to return to Merseyside empty-handed. As for Stoke, they move above Liverpool into eighth place in the Premier League.

Steven Gerrard attempts one of his trademark long-range shots from 25 yards but Asmir Begovic sees it all the way and can parry it to safety without much trouble. It looks like it's going to be Stoke's day.

Glenn Whelan trips Luis Suarez in cynical fashion as he zones in on Stoke's danger area. The resulting free kick, 20 yards out and just to the right of the middle of the pitch, is struck straight into the Stoke wall by Suarez. Moments later, Liverpool's talisman puts a tempting ball across the six-yard box but none of his team mates are there to tap into the empty net.

There's a disagreement in the box as Robert Huth and Jonjo Shelvey battle over a long ball. Shelvey looked to kick out at Huth but Howard Webb defuses the situation with a quiet word. Meanwhile Ryan Shotton replaces Matthew Etherington for the home team.

Liverpool aren't showing too many signs of threatening Stoke's goal. Raheem Sterling sees a curling effort deflected into the gloves of Asmir Begovic. There's less than ten minutes left to play now.

Matthew Etherington puts another fantastic ball into the box towards the substitute Dean Whitehead but Pepe Reina claims the ball bravely, getting a boot in the body for his efforts from the Stoke midfielder. It was completely unintentional and the Spanish goalkeeper is soon back on his feet.

Luis Suarez is carrying this Liverpool side at times. This time, he takes on the entirety of Stoke's defence, tracking across the penalty box before seeing his left-footed effort blocked. Meanwhile Michael Kightly is replaced by Dean Whitehead for Stoke.

Andy Wilkinson fouls Stewart Downing on the right edge of the Stoke box but it was very close to being another penalty kick. Downing took it himself but it came to nothing.

Geoff Cameron catches Raheem Sterling and concedes a free kick. Having been booked in the first half, Cameron can count himself lucky not to be given his marching orders.

That looked nasty from Luis Suarez. Jose Enrique looked to pick Suarez out with a direct pass into the box but Begovic claimed the ball before it dropped to the forward, who followed through with his studs. It's a yellow for Suarez, which is probably the right decision but the home supporters wanted to see a different coloured card.

Jordan Henderson is going to come on for the visitors, with Lucas Leiva making way. It's very much a straight swap in the centre of midfield for Liverpool but Henderson offers a little more creativity.
56' FESTIVE IMPROVEMENTS
Before today, Stoke had won just one of their last ten Boxing Day fixtures. But with a two-goal lead here they have a great chance of improving that festive record and moving above Liverpool into eighth position in the Premier League.

Confidence is sky-high with Stoke now. Matthew Etherington's cross is half-cleared by Enrique but only as far as Kenwyne Jones, who attempts a half-acrobatic attempt which doesn't trouble Reina.

Liverpool try to react straight away from a corner kick but Glen Johnson spins inside the box and puts the ball way over the bar as he's off balance.

It's an archetypal Stoke City goal. The long throw into the Liverpool box causes mayhem in the area and Martin Skrtel can only head the ball towards Walters. The Republic of Ireland international controlled excellently before directing the ball magnificently into the top left-hand corner of the goal.

45' HALF-TIME REPORT
Four of the last nine Premier League matches between these two sides have ended in goalless draws so the early goal-fest here came unexpectedly. And while many of us may have been settling in for a turgid affair, Luis Suarez hadn't read the script, evading Ryan Shawcross and winning a penalty for his team in the opening moments. Steven Gerrard made no mistake from the spot but Stoke, famous for their resolve, came back immediately. Jonathan Walters took advantage of a defensive slip to equalise before Kenwyne Jones headed in a second - all within the first ten minutes. For a while Liverpool looked stunned but they have improved as the half has continued and still remain well in the game.

Jonjo Shelvey finds himself in acres of space in front of the Stoke defence, and not for the first time today. He has time to turn and have an effort at goal but the ball squirms into the hands of Asmir Begovic. Tony Pulis must be worried about the space Liverpool are finding in between the Potters' defence and midfield.

Liverpool are enjoying superiority at the minute but are struggling to create too many clear-cut chances. Luis Suarez is dispossessed by Robert Huth before Steven Gerrard attempts a very ambitious shot from 35 yards out which balloons harmlessly high and wide.

Stewart Downing passes to Luis Suarez inside the box, and the forward rolls his man before firing at the Stoke goal from a tough angle. The strike is straight at Asmir Begovic though and he can save.

The home crowd are having a huge influence on this match. As Brendan Rodgers' sides always do, Liverpool are insistent on playing out from the back, at all costs. This time, as Stoke pressure, Jose Enrique is forced to play an almost suicidal pass across goal. Nothing comes of it, but it's evidence of contrasting styles in action.

Stewart Downing skips down the left-hand side and then picks out Steven Gerrard on the edge of the box. Gerrard takes the shot on first time, but uncharacteristically mis-hits it wide. Moments later, Downing picks out Luis Suarez who, in similar fashion, fluffs the opportunity.

Suso Saez nearly slides in Luis Suarez who had made a great run in between Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth but the Uruguayan forward just can't get the ball under control to get a shot away.

What a save by Reina! Steven N'Zonzi accelerated down the right flank before cutting the ball back across goal. Matthew Etherington rushed onto it but his vicious effort was well tipped over by Pepe Reina.
22' SHELVEY BAD TOUCH
Steven Gerrard almost picks out Jonjo Shelvey with an excellent pass through the heart of the Stoke defence but Shelvey can't control the ball and Asmir Begovic can collect.
20' LIVERPOOL COUNTER
Liverpool launch a good counter-attack which ends in Stewart Downing squaring the ball across the penalty area but Suso Saez, arriving in the box, slips at the vital moment. In fairness, the delivery was well behind the young Spaniard.
18' FANTASTIC STOKE RESPONSE
Stoke deserve plenty of credit for their performance since conceding the penalty in the opening moments of the match. As ever, it has been high-intensity stuff from the Potters who are being roared on by the Britannia Stadium faithful. Liverpool, on the other hand, look rattled.

After a frantic start, the match is currently going through something of a lull in proceedings. And by that I mean we haven't had a goal for a few minutes. Howard Webb takes charge of tonight's fixture at the Britannia Stadium. Webb, from Rotherham, has one of the highest bookings to matches ratios in the league and, in true festive spirit, we could see plenty of cards handed out today. It's doubtful that Tony Pulis will be delighted to hear that but he will have fond memories of the last time Webb took charge of a fixture involving his side - the Potters' 2-1 win over Newcastle last month.
0' ALLEN MISSES OUT
After the convincing win over Fulham at Anfield at the weekend, Brendan Rodgers may be reluctant to change too much with his team. However Raheem Sterling, who started on the bench against the Cottagers, could earn a recall to the starting line-up. Joe Allen, who was also a bench-warmer on Saturday, is less likely to be restored to the heart of the Liverpool midfield though as he struggles with a pelvic injury. Oussama Assaidi, Fabio Borini and Martin Kelly remain long-term absentees.

He may have had little effect on Stoke since signing to much fanfare in the summer, but Michael Owen could be set to return to action at his old stomping ground after recovering from a hamstring niggle. But if fit, Owen is only likely to make the bench as Peter Crouch, another former Red, bids to get back among Tony Pulis' starters. Charlie Adam missed the stalemate with Tottenham on compassionate grounds after the death of his father but he could return to bolster the Potters' chances.

Even the most robust Premier League units wince at the prospect of a visit to the Britannia Stadium. But Liverpool's record against Stoke is even worse than most. Since their promotion in 2008, the Reds haven't beaten Tony Pulis' men away from Anfield at all, gaining just a couple of points and scoring a solitary goal - courtesy of Sotirios Krygiakos in a 1-1 draw in January 2010. Stoke's defence is meaner than ever at the moment and statistically the best in the division, having conceded just 13 goals in 18 games. But Liverpool have lost just two of their last ten Premier League matches and will be hoping Luis Suarez, accused of diving by Pulis in October, can inspire them to a landmark victory.
