Stoke City vs. Southampton
Minute Commentary
90' SUPERB FIGHTBACK BY POSITIVE STOKE
What a wonderful game at the Brittania! 3-1 down up at half time, Southampton had a chance to bury the game, when Guly missed an absolute sitter. Stoke never gave up; not even the Nzonzi sending off wavered their passion. Matthew Upson gave them hope, before Cameron Jerome scored an absolute belter on the stroke of 90 minutes to rescure a point. Southampton will kick themselves for their negativity in the second half. They looked consigned to draw as they allowed Stoke to pelt them with chance after chance. Full Time - Stoke City 3, Southampton 3.
90' FULL TIME
It's all over. Stoke City 3, Southampton 3.
90' CROUCH HEADER!
Stoke City earn a free kick, which Glenn Whelan delivers. Peter Crouch almost wins the game but Kelvin Davis makes an instinctive save to stop him.
90' TIME-WASTING TACTICS
Southampton are trying every trick in the book here to try and escape this game with at least a point. Tony Pulis isn't impressed.
90' REGRETFUL FANS
Those fans who left early will really be kicking themselves now. The atmosphere is unbelievable and a winner isn't unthinkable.
90' MORE ON THAT GOAL
The Britannia erupts as Stoke finally get that equaliser!! 25 yards out and CAMERON JEROME makes himself a hero with a screamer, which hits the underside of the bar on the way in. With a massive seven minutes of added time, Stoke could go on to win this!
90' GOOOAAALLL
Equaliser for Stoke!! Cameron Jerome the hero.
88' OFFSIDE!!!
The crazy celebrations are halted as Cameron Jerome thought he had the equaliser! Kenwyne Jones crosses it for his fellow striker, who converts with ease. A late flag breaks Stoke fans' hearts though.
87' THIRD PENALTY APPEAL
Yet another penalty appeal - this time for handball - is waved away by Clattenburg. The Stoke players really protested this time, but to no avail.
84' EVEN JONES BATTLING ON
Even Kenwyne Jones, known for his laid-back approach, is chasing shadows like a man possessed, desperately looking for any opportunity.
82' ANOTHER PENALTY APPEAL
Peter Crouch is felled in the area but despite the echo of appeals, Mark Clattenburg waves play on. Luke Shaw departs, with Daniel Fox his replacement.
80' RAISING THE ROOF
The Stoke fans are really in fine voice inside the Britannia. A goal now would surely lift the roof.
78' SURELY THE GOAL WILL COME
It's now chance after chance for Stoke. Kenwyne Jones' header is saved once more by Kelvin Davis, but given Southampton's record of conceding late goals, the equaliser seems almost inevitable as the Stoke onslaught continues. Meanwhile, Jay Rodriguez is cautioned.
75' ALL STOKE
It's only a question of whether Stoke can score or not now. Kenwyne Jones misses a pair of chances, before Peter Crouch replaces Michael Kightly. Previously, Dean Whitehead replaced Andy Wilkinson.
73' RED CARD!
Steven Nzonzi stamps on a Southampton player following a challenge, and Mark Clattenburg shows no hesitation in showing the red card. Replays suggest that Nzonzi may not have actually touched the player, but perhaps the intent was there.
71' MASSIVE PENALTY CLAIM
A prolonged appeal from Kenwyne Jones for a penalty is dismissed by Mark Clattenburg. The Stoke players are furious.
68' MORE ON THAT GOAL
After the biggest let-off you are likely to see in the top flight at one end, Stoke have punished Southampton with a goal at the other end! MATTHEW UPSON scores his first goal in 10 years, scrambling it in from a Glenn Whelan corner.
68' GOOOAAALLL
Stoke pull one back! Matthew Upson!
66' A LITTLE MORE AMBITIOUS NOW
Southampton are beginning to believe they can get a fourth, putting together a few decent moves and committing a few more players. It almost pays off as Robert Huth makes an awful mistake, gifting Guly a goal on a plate - all he has to do is side-foot it in. Somehow he makes a hash of it. Southampton don't want to commit too many player, though, as Stoke still look dangerous.
63' SOUTHAMPTON SHOT
Southampton put a rare attack together, which allows Jay Rodriguez to round an overzealous Asmir Begovic, only to see his shot bravely blocked by Robert Huth.
59' SEAMLESS PRESSURE
That break in play didn't affect Stoke's momentum at all, as they start to pile up the pressure once again. Southampton's tactic is now to shut up shop; they are camped in their own area and when they get the ball, they just try to get it as far away from goal as possible, without actually creating any chances.
57' CHANCE TO RECUPERATE
Stoke had just begun to build momentum but that break in play will allow the Saints to catch their breath and take the sting out of the game. Meanwhile, Stoke make a switch: Cameron Jerome on for Matthew Etherington.
54' CLASH OF HEADS
Stoke's disorganisation this time results in a clash of heads between Andy Wilkinson and Robert Huth. Both have gashes and will have to leave the pitch, for the time being at least. That means that Stoke only have two defenders on at the moment - at least there won't be much confusion in the area.
52' KIGHTLY SHOT
Jonathan Walters flicks Asmir Begovic's goal kick on towards Michael Kightly, who has options left and right but instead decides to go alone. the shot is tame and is very easy for Kelvin Davis.
50' FIRST LOSS IN MANY?
The last time Stoke lost at home was in a snow-covered affair in February. They won't want to let that unbeaten record go, but Southampton don't look like letting this two-goal lead slip.
47' EARLY FREE KICK
Jose Fonte gives away a free kick in a good position for a foul on Jonathan Walters. Fonte is booked, but Kightly's free kick comes to nothing.
46' KICK OFF
The second half is underway with both sides unchanged at the break.
45' FIRST HALF SUMMARY
We said before kick off that it'd be difficult to predict which Southampton would turn up. Well, they've certainly made that clear - they go into the half time break with a two-goal lead, and they look good for it. Rickie Lambert put the visitors ahead, following some poor defending, from Andy Wilkinson in particular. Stoke hit back immediately, Kenwyne Jones squandering a golden opportunity before making amends with a clever backheel to level things up. Stoke looked good from there, that is, until Southampton regained the lead through Jay Rodriguez. Andy Wilkinson's day then got even worse with an own-goal. Southampton do look vulnerable at the back though, so an inspired Stoke could turn this round in the second period.
45' HALF TIME
The referee calls time on a fascinating 45 minutes of football.
44' HANGING ON
We're closing in on half time, and Stoke are trying to run down the clock, and go into the break with at least a hope of a comeback intact. I wouldn't want to be going in for half time if I was a Stoke player though, Tony Pulis looks absolutely furious.
41' STINGER
Jack Cork stings the hands of Asmir Begovic with a thunderbolt of a strike from outside the area. It's straight at the keeper, but it's too powerful to catch at the first attempt. Nevertheless, Begovic controls it in the end.
38' MORE ON THAT GOAL
You wouldn't believe how bad Stoke City have been in defence today. The best defence in the league? Not without Shawcross and Cameron. Rickie Lambert's free kick isn't dealt with and ANDY WILKINSON ends up turning the ball into his own net.
37' GOOOAAALLL
3-1 Southampton! It's an own goal from Andy Wilkinson.
35' INACCURACY COSTS STOKE
Stoke City have a glorious chance, with Matthew Etherington begging for the ball with a clear path to goal. Jonathan Walters spots the run but the execution of the pass isn't great, forcing Etherington wide. He tries to improvise with a cross, but nobody can get on the end of it.
33' SOUTHAMPTON GAINING CONFIDENCE
The visitors can't have expected this when they made the trip, but they are constantly growing in confidence, as they shower the Stoke penalty area with crosses from both sides.
29' END TO END
The game has turned into an end to end affair, which isn't good for Stoke, who were in control earlier, despite the scoreline. As things stand, the next goal could come from anywhere, and if it goes in favour of the Saints, it'll be a mountain to climb for Stoke.
27' SLUGGISH
The Stoke City players aren't appreciative of their frontman's style of play. The energetic midfelder's efforts are often wasted as Kenwyne Jones refuses to move to get the ball. At the other end, Jason Puncheon's high drive is stopped well by Begovic.
25' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Rickie Lambert's attempt cannons back off the crossbar from a corner, and the Stoke defence are too slow to react. JAY RODRIGUEZ is on hand to put the Saints back into the lead.
25' GOOOAAALLL
Jay Rodriguez gives Southampton the lead for a second time!
23' BEGOVIC A PRESENCE
In truth, Stoke City's defence does look a little disorganised without the leadership of Shawcross. Luckily, Asmir Begovic has good command of his area, and has plucked a number of crosses out of the air.
19' THINGS GOING THE WAY OF THE HOSTS
But for that early goal from Rickie Lambert, the visitors have offered very little. The equaliser is more than deserved, and the way things are going, Stoke look the more likely side to take the lead.
16' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Ryan Shotton forces his way into the box and pulls it back for KENWYNE JONES, who makes up for his earlier miss with a clever backheel to level things up.
15' GOOOAAALLL
There's the equaliser! Kenwyne Jones!
14' WHAT A CHANCE!
Kenwyne Jones blunders a wonderful chance to peg Southampton back immediately. The ball comes across to him at the back post, and although it takes a slight bobble before he strikes it, that miss is almost unforgivable! He rightly holds his head in his hands.
13' FANCIES HIS CHANCES
Luke Shaw has asserted his presence early on, dispossessing Michael Kightly a few times, and generally tidying up in defence. Kightly does seem to fancy his chances against the inexperienced left-back, however.
10' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a rarity but Stoke have failed to defend an incoming cross from the right. Kudos to Guly, who puts a dangerous ball in, but Andy Wilkinson should really stick a foot out and clear that. He doesn't, and RICKIE LAMBERT tucks it home at the back post.
10' GOOOAAALLL
Rickie Lambert stuns the Britannia Stadium with the opening goal!
5' SCRAPPY START
It's been quite a free-for-all in the centre of the park, with neither side creating anything worthy of note so far. Stoke City do look the more accomplished side, and their passes seem to be connecting a little more frequently, but Southampton do look a threat on the flanks. Luke Shaw is roaming that left wing and has already provided a few decent crosses.
2' BATTLE OF THE GIANTS
Jos Hooiveld has been brought into the Southampton side to try and counter Stoke's height. However, early signs suggest that the Saints' centre-back isn't that good at headers. A poor attempted clearance almost affords Kenwyne Jones an early chance, but the Stoke attacker can't quite get the shot away.
1' KICK OFF
Mark Clattenburg blows his whistle and gets things started at the Britannia.
0' SOUTHAMPTON LINE-UP
Nigel Adkins fields two strikers this afternoon. Rickie Lambert struggled on his own up front against Fulham, but today shares the goal-scoring burden with Jay Rodriguez. With that little extra support, Adkins will be hoping that his side can break the sturdy Stoke defence down.
0' STOKE LINE-UP
Matthew Upson and Ryan Shotton fill in at the back for the suspended Shawcross and Cameron. Kenwyne Jones is preferred up front, but Stoke have plenty of game-changers on the bench - Michael Owen, Peter Crouch and Cameron Jerome are all in reserve should Tony Pulis feel the need for a little extra firepower.
0' LIVE COMMENTARY
Kick off is at 15.00 BST. Join us shortly beforehand for confirmed team news, followed by live text commentary.
0' SOUTHAMPTON TEAM NEWS
Southampton will make the trip without captain Adam Lallana, who they have really missed in the centre of the park. Nigel Adkins was rather sketchy about a few other potential absentees, but suggested that the nameless pair that picked up knocks against Fulham should be fit to play.
0' STOKE TEAM NEWS
Stalwart defender Ryan Shawcross and right-back Geoff Cameron are suspended for this game, forcing Tony Pulis into a rejig of the defence; Matthew Upson and Ryan Shotton are the likely replacements.
0' HEAD-TO-HEAD
The historical matchup has been very even between these two, with Southampton winning 28 of the 62 all time meetings. Stoke have won 25 times and there have been nine draws between the teams who first played in September 1923 in the old first division. Since then, these two have mainly locked horns in the second division, with the last top flight encounter occurring in 1985. Stoke have won five of the last six meetings, with a 2-1 Saints win in 2006 the lone exception. The last time these sides met was in the 2007-08 season, both sides winning at home in closely-fought 3-2 battles.
0' LUCKY DIP
The Saints games have been particularly tricky for the pundits this year. With their last six outings being split evenly between wins, draws and losses, it's difficult to predict which Southampton is going to turn up.
0' STOKE'S ATTACK
We all know how tough Stoke are to beat, but with 10 draws to their name (and six wins), some have questioned their goal-scoring ability. The stats speak for themselves – with only 18 goals in 19 games so far, Stoke have the third worst goal-scoring record in the league, with only Aston Villa and QPR worse off. Times could be changing though; Kenwyne Jones, who had previously gone 27 league games without finding the net, has scored twice in his last three appearances. What's more, that 3-1 win against Liverpool last time out was the first time the Potters had scored more than two goals in a single game for 44 straight matches - talk about grinding out results!
0' THE VISITORS
Next up for the Potters: Southampton. The newly-promoted side have performed admirably so far this term, and but for a number of late goals against them, they could have took the scalps of both Manchester clubs. Nevertheless, they have managed to keep themselves out of the relegation zone – for the time being at least. A win today would see them out of the red zone come the New Year, while failing to take the points could result in an unfavourable position swap with Wigan.
0' THE HOSTS
With the halfway stage upon us, Tony Pulis' men would be forgiven for dreaming of another European adventure next season. The Potters are up to eighth with a respectable 28 points on the board. They also boast the best defensive record in the league, having conceded only four at home. In fact, The Britannia has been a fortress for Stoke this season; Man City, Arsenal and Everton have all tried and failed to win at the oldest Premier League club's ground.
