West Bromwich Albion vs. Fulham
Minute Commentary
90' FT: WEST BROM 1 FULHAM 2
Fulham record only their second away win of the season and their first at The Hawthorns in the Premier League. They came into this match with only one win in 12, but they dominated from the start and took the lead six minutes from the end of a dismal opening period with a clinical finish from Dimitar Berbatov, who was outstanding throughout. West Brom likely got a rocket from their manager at the break and were transformed at the start of the second half. Their equaliser came four minutes after the restart, Romelu Lukaku finishing from close range after good work from Marc-Antoine Fortune and Billy Jones in the build-up. It looked for all the world that the home side would push on and grab a winner, but instead they were caught out by a smart counter from the visitors. Alex Kacaniklic profited from an incisive pass from Bryan Ruiz on 58 minutes and turned his marker before stroking his shot past Ben Foster.
90' FINAL ESCAPE FOR FULHAM
Fulham survive a final scare, Long's back-heel deflecting kindly for the visitors off Sidwell.
90' FULHAM SUBSTITUTION
Dimitar Berbatov is replaced by Philippe Senderos.
90' OFF THE LINE
Billy Jones weaves his way through the Fulham defence superbly and sees his cross-cum-shot cleared off the line by Hughes.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of three minutes of added time.
88' LUKAKU HEADS WIDE
Lukaku rises well at the far post to meet a corner, but directs his header wide of the post under pressure from Hughes.
85' FULHAM SUBSTITUTION
Berbatov sees his shot deflect wide after being found by Rodallega. West Brom replace Brunt with George Thorne.
83' BRAVE FROM STOCKDALE
Lukaku does tremendously well down the left and only a brave save from Stockdale prevents the ball from being forced home by Long at the near post.
82' DEJAGAH NOT FAR AWAY
It's Fulham carrying all the threat. Kacaniklic finds Dejagah and his long-range effort is only just wide of the right-hand upright.
81' FULHAM PENALTY CLAIMS
Ruiz takes a tumble inside the box, but Mr Dean decides to ignore Fulham claims for a penalty.
78' FULHAM SUBSTITUTION
Hugo Rodallega replaces Karagounis, who has been quiet today.
76' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
Kacaniklic just fails to gather another absolutely fabulous pass from Ruiz in his stride. Play switches to the other end and Morrison flashes a cross just beyond Lukaku, who then heads wide from a cross from the opposite flank.
73' REFEREE IN LENIENT MOOD
Tamas somehow escapes a booking for a dreadful, cynical tackle on Berbatov, who is rightly infuriated by a lack of protection from the referee.
71' PRESSURE GROWING ALL THE TIME
West Brom win a string of corners, but some dogged Fulham defending keeps their goal intact.
68' POOR FIRST TOUCH
The changes almost bring instant reward after a fine passing move almost puts in Morrison. Only a heavy first touch prevented the opportunity of a clear shot at goal.
66' WEST BROM SUBSTITUTIONS
Fortune and Gera are replaced by Long and Odemwingie. Steve Clarke is going for it, as he did in the closing stages against Nowich in West Brom's last home game.
65' KARAGOUNIS GOES DOWN
Karagounis is down with a shoulder injury after another clash with Mulumbu. He made a meal of that.
63' OPTIONS ON THE BENCH
West Brom have been set back on their heels again by that second Fulham goal and have reverted back to their error-strewn ways of the first half. Steve Clarke needs to make a change.
60' GOAL DETAILS
It's a goal out of nothing for the visitors. Ruiz split the defence with a delightful pass and the Swede turned his man before stroking home into an empty net with Foster caught way off his line and out of position.
58' GOAL: WEST BROM 1 FULHAM 2
Alex Kacaniklic gives Fulham the lead again.
57' SO CLOSE TO A SECOND
West Brom go close to taking the lead. Lukaku collects a pass forward from Fortune, Stockdale makes a great save to keep out his initial effort, Gera fires the rebound against the post and another rebound falls to Brunt, whose blistering goalbound shot is brilliantly headed over his own bar by Hughes.
55' VISITORS UNDER PRESSURE
The whole feel of this game has changed. Suddenly Fulham look nervy and unable to string two passes together.
53' LUKAKU HITS THE POST
Lukaku holds off Hughes to collect a ball forward and hooks a shot from the edge of the box that hits the outside of the upright.
51' GOAL DETAILS
Fortune did well to ride a couple of tackles and fed Jones in space on the right. The defender squared the ball to an unmarked Lukaku, who was borderline offside as he swept the ball home from four yards.
49' GOAL: WEST BROM 1 FULHAM 1
Romelu Lukaku levels for West Brom.
48' BERBATOV GOES DOWN
Berbatov goes down with a mysterious injury after contact with Fortune. It was just an innocuous contact with the shoulder of the West Brom man to the side of his head, nothing malicious at all.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
West Brom get the second half under way. Neither side has made changes at the break.
45' HT: WEST BROM 0 FULHAM 1
Fulham hold a deserved lead given to them by Dimitar Berbatov six minutes before the break. The Bulgarian started and finished the move, sweeping home from inside the box after some good play in the build-up by Ashkan Dejagah. It was a half of very few chances, with Aaron Hughes heading wide from a left-wing corner early on for the visitors. West Brom? They have been dreadful. I know it's absolutely not the case, but they have looked like a side that has been out celebrating the New Year overnight. Steve Clarke will have something to say to his charges when he gets them in the dressing room and it would not be a surprise to see a substitution or two at the interval.
44' HEADER WIDE FROM MULUMBU
Ridgewell crosses from the left and Mulumbu directs a header comfortably wide from 12 yards.
41' GOAL DETAILS
It all came about after a West Brom attack broke down. Fulham broke quickly, Berbatov fed Dejagah on the right and he waltzed past his man before squaring for the Bulgarian, who drilled a low shot through a crowd of players and past Foster from around 14 yards.
39' GOAL: WEST BROM 0 FULHAM 1
Dimitar Berbatov gives Fulham the lead.
38' KARAGOUNIS SHOOTS OVER
Karagounis cuts in from the right and tries an extremely ambitious angled drive from 30 yards that would have cleared two sets of goal-posts.
37' SHOT DEFLECTED WIDE
Fortune's having a stinker here, but he's not alone. You could make a case for taking off at least half the side at the interval. Morrison sees a 25-yard shot hit a defender and deflect wide.
34' WAITING IN THE WINGS
It's too early to make a change now, of course, but West Brom need a spark, someone to run at Fulham from deep. Someone very much like Peter Odemwingie.
31' BERBATOV SHOOTS OVER
Brunt makes a real mess of a back-pass and is mightily relieved to see Berbatov try an ambitious shot from 25 yards that clears the bar by a distance.
29' GOOD BLOCK FROM SIDWELL
Lukaku barges Hughes off the ball and then drives for goal from the left. The Belgian takes a little too long over pulling the trigger and Sidwell blocks the shot. Tamas then heads wide from the corner.
27' NERVY GOALKEEPING
Stockdale totally misses a corner from the left. Set-pieces definitely look West Brom's best route to a goal.
26' FORTUNE SHOT BLOCKED
Stockdale flaps at a Brunt free-kick from the left, but is saved by his defence and Hangeland then blocks an angled drive from Fortune. This is better from West Brom.
25' BERBA HARD DONE BY
I don't know what Mike Dean has against Dimitar Berbatov, but that is now twice the Bulgarian has been penalised for perfectly good tackles.
23' WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Lukaku cannot get on the end of a return pass from Gera then urges the crowd to stop moaning and get behind the team.
20' McAULEY HEADS WIDE
McAuley climbs highest to meet a Brunt free-kick from the right, but his header is well wide of the target.
16' WHAT'S UP WITH WEST BROM?
West Brom are second best all over the pitch at the moment. Misplaced passes, poor first touches and a lack of urgency are not what you would expect from a Steve Clarke side.
13' SIDWELL SHOOTS OVER
Dejagah (presumably nicknamed Mick by his team-mates), skips past a tackle and lays the ball square for Sidwell, who shoots powerfully but over from 25 yards.
11' GREAT CHANCE FOR HUGHES
McAuley makes a vital interception to prevent a cross from the left by Kacaniklic from reaching the unmarked Ruiz. Hughes then spurns a glorious chance to head home the resulting corner, failing to make contact from four yards.
8' CROWD ON FORTUNES BACK
Mulumbu slightly overhits a pass forward down the right for Fortune, who simply gives up the chase when he feels he is not going to get there first. The crowd, rightly, give their man an earful. The Baggies are surprisingly listless at the moment.
5' COMFORTABLE FOR FULHAM
Lukaku is West Brom's leading scorer and I understand the desire to play him. But the on-loan man is allowing the visitors to play the ball comfortably from the back, something that Shane Long would never permit.
3' GLARING ERRORS?
There is a low sun shining right in the eyes of the Fulham defence. It's the last thing goalkeeper David Stockdale needs after that horror show on Saturday.
2' HOW FULHAM LINE UP
Martin Jol has confirmed he is going to play a five-man midfield with Alex Kacaniklic wide on the left.
1' HERE WE GO
Fulham kick off, attacking the goal to our right.

0' TEAM NEWS
West Brom make five changes to the side beaten at Manchester United, with James Morrison, Marc-Antoine Fortune, Youssouf Mulumbu, Zoltan Gera and Romelu Lukaku coming in. Fulham show just one change, with Alex Kacaniklic replacing Kerim Frei. That means Mark Schwarzer is still unfit and David Stockdale continues in goal.
0' PREVIEW
Fulham travel to The Hawthorns for the opening Premier League match of 2013 looking to halt a dismal recent run of form that has seen them slide alarmingly down the table. One win in 12 has seen the Cottagers drop from the heady heights of fourth earlier in the campaign into the lower reaches of the top flight and all the signs are that Martin Jol's side will be one of the clubs scrapping for survival for the rest of the season. West Brom are another club to have found life a little more difficult after flirting with the Champions League places but, Saturday's defeat at Old Trafford aside, they look top have righted the ship. With a trip to Reading sandwiched between this home match and another one against Aston Villa, Steve Clarke's side could have enough points in the bag come mid-January to ensure Premier League football for another season. Clarke will be using the 3-0 defeat his side suffered at Craven Cottage earlier in the season – his first as Baggies head coach – as motivation. “I think going into the Fulham game we have to bear in mind that earlier this season they turned us over,” he told the official West Brom website. “They are one of the few sides who have really beaten us this season. I will remind the players of how poorly we played in that game.” Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Steve Clarke has rotated strikers Shane Long and Romelu Lukaku over the Christmas period and it will be interesting to see if the on-loan Chelsea man gets the start today having been benched for the trip to Old Trafford. Lukaku has six goals to Brunt's five, despite playing 400 fewer minutes this season, though the work-rate and other intangibles offered by the Republic of Ireland striker should not be overlooked. Two other players key to West Brom's success are injury doubts today, but if Youssouf Mulumbu and Claudio Yacob are both fit and form that impenetrable barrier in front of the back four then the visitors are going to have a tough time finding the target. For Fulham, much will as usual depend on what mood Dimitar Berbatov is in. The enigmatic Bulgarian has six goals and four assists to his name this season, including two against the Baggies back in September. It must be a worry for Martin Jol, though, that the goals have dried up in recent weeks, with the former Manchester United man's strike against Southampton on Boxing Day his only tally in the last nine games.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
West Brom have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 31 wins to 23 by Fulham and 15 games being drawn. At The Hawthorns, West Brom have 20 wins to seven by the Cottagers, with a further seven meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season finished in a goalless draw. Fulham are looking for their first league win on this ground since Dec. 2000. They are also looking to complete their season double over the Baggies since the 1974-75 season, having won 3-0 at Craven Cottage back on Sep.15 with two first-half goals from Dimitar Berbatov (one a penalty) and a late third from Steven Sidwell (89). Peter Odemwingie didn't exactly help the West Brom cause by getting himself sent off for violent conduct after 38 minutes.
0' FORM GUIDE
West Brom sit in seventh place, with 33 points from 20 games, the same tally as the two clubs above them, Arsenal and Everton. No fewer than 22 of the Baggies' points haul have come in front of their own fans and only leaders Manchester United can boast more home wins this season. Fulham are currently 14th, with 21 points, four more than Southampton, who are in the relegation zone. Their only win in the last 12 was a rather fortuitous 2-1 home triumph over Newcastle United on Dec. 10. With six defeats in nine, a draw would be more than a satisfactory result here for the visitors today.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
West Brom have injury doubts over Goran Popov, Youssouf Mulumbu and Claudio Yacob (all hamstring), Jonas Olsson (groin), Steven Reid (ankle), who all missed the defeat at Manchester United. Fulham will be praying that goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is recovered from his neck injury, as stand-in David Stockdale had a nightmare against Swansea. Damien Duff could also be fit, but Mahamadou Diarra and Mladen Petric remain sidelined.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Mike Dean, who has been a FIFA official since 2002. The Cheshire-based referee has shown 50 yellow cards in his 13 Premier League games this season and sent off just one player, Arsenal's Jack Wilshere at Manchester United. Dean has a reputation for being strict on misdemeanours in the penalty area and awarded more spot kicks last campaign than any other top-flight official. His assistants today are Jake Collin and Simon Long, while Chris Foy is the fourth official.
