Wigan Athletic vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' UNITED MARCH ON
So United avenge last season's upset at the DW with an emphatic 4-0 win, Javier Hernandez and Robin van Persie grabbing a brace apiece. Wigan acquitted themselves well for long periods of the match, but rarely tested David de Gea throughout the 90 minutes and were put to the sword by some fine finishing from the Red Devils' front two.
90' FULL TIME
Wigan Athletic 0, Manchester United 4.
90' INTO ADDED TIME
There will be two added minutes at the end of the match.
88' GOAL - VAN PERSIE
United add a fourth, as Rafael, Hernandez and Welbeck all combine to lay the ball up for ROBIN VAN PERSIE, who scuffs a shot past Al Habsi and into the Wigan net.. Wigan Athletic 0, Manchester United 4.
85' SUBSTITUTION
Wigan make another change, with Callum McManaman replacing Shaun Maloney.
85' CORNER KICK - WIGAN ATHLETIC
The Latics win their first corners of the afternoon. The first, from Stam, is cleared by Evra. The second, which is played short, results in handball appeals against the United captain. Andre Marriner is unmoved, however, and play continues.
83' JUST WIDE!
Gomez is inches from pulling a goal back for the Latics, as his free kick skims past the wrong side of the post.
82' BOOKING
Now Smalling sees yellow after hauling down Kone as he attempted to break towards goal. The home fans wanted to see red, but Andre Marriner adjudged that there were other United defenders who could have got back to make the challenge.
80' QUICK REACTIONS
A shaky moment for Chris Smalling, as the defender almost deflects the ball into his own net. Fortunately for the United substitute, his goalkeeper is alert and clears the danger.
78' SUBSTITUTION
A final change for United, as Danny Welbeck replaces Ashley Young.
77' GOMEZ ATTEMPT
Half a chance for Wigan, as Jordi Gomez receives the ball on the edge of the penalty area. The Spaniard fails to test his compatriot David de Gea, however, dragging his shot wide of the target.
75' SIMPLE CATCH
The visitors venture forwards through Young, but the England winger's cross is well gathered by Al Habsi.
74' DETERMINED DEFENDING
Wigan are seeing a little more of the ball since the substitutions, but United are defending well, harrying the Latics and denying them the time to pick the killer pass.
72' STAM EFFORT
Ronnie Stam attempts to make an immediate impact, cutting inside before driving an effort towards goal. Johnny Evans puts his body in the path of the ball to make the block.
69' SUBSTITUTION
Wigan also make a double switch, with Ronnie Stam and Jordi Gomez replacing Gary Caldwell and Franco Di Santo.
68' SUBSTITUTION
Sir Alex Ferguson makes a double change. Chris Smalling and Shinji Kagawa come on, with Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick making way.
66' GAME OVER
Wigan will, with some justification, feel a little hard done by here - the Latics have played well in patches this afternoon. However, the clinical finishing of Hernandez and Van Persie has made the difference for United.
63' GOAL - HERNANDEZ
And that should be that. The visitors extend their lead, JAVIER HERNANDEZ poking the ball into the net after Robin van Persie's free kick smashes into the Wigan defensive wall. The Mexican's reactions in the Latics' penalty area have been lightening quick this afternoon. Wigan Athletic 0, Manchester United 3.
61' BOOKING
Gary Caldwell is cautioned after upending Rafael.
60' OVER THE BAR
The Red Devils nearly add a third, as Hernandez beats Al Habsi to Young's cross, flicking the ball over the top of the Wigan net.
58' OFFSIDE!
Wigan have the ball in the net, but it won't count. Arouna Kone meets Di Santo's cross, slamming the ball past De Gea, but replays show that he was - just - offside when the ball was played.
56' HERNANDEZ EFFORT
Javier Hernandez jinks his way inside before pulling the trigger. Unfortunately for the United forward, his effort flies high and wide of the Wigan net.
55' CRUCIAL TACKLE
It's all United now. Van Persie almost gets on the end of another fine cross from Ryan Giggs, but is denied by a last-ditch interception.
54' SITTING COMFORTABLY
The standard may have dropped from the first half, but the current situation will suit the visitors just fine - it's hard to see at this moment how Wigan are going to find a way back into this match. Sir Alex Ferguson looks less than satisfied on the sidelines, mind, berating his strikers for their failure to hold up possession.
52' LATICS BALL!
More groans from the DW faithful, as United are awarded a throw-in after the ball appeared to bounce out of play off the legs of Rio Ferdinand.
49' CONTROVERSIAL DECISION
The game is just going through a little scrappy spell at the moment, with both sides conceding possession cheaply. The home fans are none too chuffed as Franco Di Santo is harshly adjudged to have fouled Ashley Young.
47' NO CHANGES
Both sides are unchanged from the end of the first half. It'll be interesting to see how Wigan approach their task in this second half; one goal and they are right back in the game, but concede another and it's surely game over.
46' KICK-OFF - SECOND HALF
We're back playing at the DW.
45' HALF TIME SUMMARY
Goals from Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez give Manchester United a two-goal cushion at the interval, leaving Roberto Martinez's Wigan with a mountain to climb in the second half at the DW Stadium. The scoreline is a tad harsh on Wigan, who gave as good as they got for the opening quarter of the match, before United opened the scoring just after the half hour as Chicarito fired home after latching on to the rebound from Patrice Evra's driven effort. The Latics attempted to respond, before RVP netted a second for the visitors, beating Ali Al Habsi with a wonderful curling shot. Can the Latics find a way back into the game, or will United march on to wrap up a third straight win? Stay right here to find out.
45' HALF TIME
Wigan Athletic 0, Manchester United 2.
44' A CRUSHING BLOW
That goal looks to have knocked the stuffing out of Wigan, who were just finding their feet again after Chicarito's opener. Roberto Martinez must be hastily rewriting his team talk for the interval.
42' GOAL - VAN PERSIE
United double their lead, and you sense that could be game, set and match to the visitors. Hernandez turns provider on this occasion, feeding the ball to ROBIN VAN PERSIE, who switches feet neatly before curling a fabulous effort beyond the reach of Al Habsi. A fine finish. Wigan Athletic 0, Manchester United 2.
39' OPENING FOR WIGAN
Out of nowhere, a chance for the Latics. Emmerson Boyce stands a cross up at the far-post for Di Santo, but Rio Ferdinand hurls himself at the ball to make a vital clearance.
38' HANDBALL!
Another United corner is swung towards the back-post by Young, where Evra is correctly penalised for handball.
38' MAINTAINING THE PRESSURE
United look imperious now, stroking the ball around confidently in the Wigan half. The Latics made a good start to the match, but the Red Devils have stepped up a gear or two in the last ten minutes.
35' GOAL - HERNANDEZ
United grab the lead at the DW! The free-scoring Patrice Evra forces Al Habsi into a fine save with a low, powerful drive, but JAVIER HERNANDEZ is on hand to ram home the rebound. Wigan Athletic 0, Manchester United 1.
33' CHARGED DOWN
Van Persie's flagkick is half-cleared, before Tom Cleverley's shot is blocked by a blue and white shirt. United are ratcheting up the pressure now.
32' RAFAEL ATTEMPT
A tricky moment for Al Habsi, as the 'keeper parries Rafael's shot behind. It's another United corner...
29' CORNER - MANCHESTER UNITED
Van Persie's corner is cleared by the hosts, who attempt to counter through the boisterous Kone. Jonny Evans makes the challenge for the visitors.
28' BRILLIANT BALL
Ryan Giggs has looked to be rolling back the years this afternoon. The Welshman's cross for Hernandez's disallowed goal was a peach, and this one is even better, fizzing in towards the back-post. Fortunately for the Latics, Maynor Figueroa is able to bundle the ball behind for a corner kick.
25' WELL TAKEN
Ali Al Habsi makes advances off his goalline to pluck Ashley Young's cross out of the air. With more than a quarter of the game played, we've got something of a stalemate at the DW. Both teams are showing some nice touches in attack, but it's the defences who have been on top so far.
22' PENALTY SHOUT
United appeal for a penalty as Ashley Young takes a tumble under the challenge of Beausejour. Andre Marriner takes a good look before waving play on: six of one and half a dozen of the other seems to be the referee's verdict on that one.
20' OVER THE TOP
The ball drops nicely for Jean Beausejour on the edge of the area and the winger, no doubt visualising a Goal of the Month contender, attempts to lash a shot past David de Gea. Unfortunately for the hosts, the wideman gets right under the ball and balloons an effort into the stands.
18' TOO MUCH ON IT
A promising United attack comes to naught as Rafael hits his pass beyond the reach of Van Persie.
15' POWERFUL PRESENCE
Kone is proving a real handful for the United defence here. Rio Ferdinand looks like coming off on the wrong end of a tussle with the burly striker before Michael Carrick tracks across to lend a hand, bringing the ball away for the visitors.
12' OFFSIDE!
Ryan Giggs splits the Wigan defence with a wonderfall ball, allowing Javier Hernandez to slot past Ali Al Habsi. The United fans erupt, but there's just one problem: the linesman, correctly, has his flag raised for offside against the Mexican international.
10' KONE EFFORT
Arouna Kone makes himself a yard in the United penalty area, before poking a disappointing effort goalwards. It's been an entertaining opening to the game at the DW, but neither side has yet seriously threatened to open the scoring.
9' CLOSELY MARKED
Robin van Persie squeezes away from one challenge, before Maloney tracks across to win the ball. It appears that Wigan have opted to double mark RVP and who can blame them, when you consider the Dutchman's goalscoring form so far this season?
6' ATTACKING ON THE BREAK
Promising play from Roberto Martinez's side, as Wigan counterattack through Maloney and Di Santo. The striker attempts to square a ball across the face of goal, but Ferdinand is on hand to remove the danger.
4' FREE KICK
Wigan win a free kick in a promising position, as Jonny Evans bundles into the back of Maloney. The Latics opt to take the set-piece quickly, before Rio Ferdinand makes a smart challenge to dispossess Franco Di Santo.
2' INTELLIGENT DEFENDING
Early possession for the visitors, as Tom Cleverley looks to thread a pass through the Latics midfield. Shaun Maloney makes an important interception for the home side.
1' KICK-OFF
Wigan get the ball moving to start the game.
0' KICK-OFF APPROACHING
We'll be underway in a couple of moments at the DW Stadium.
0' TEAM NEWS
Roberto Martinez makes one change to the side that started at Villa Park on Saturday, as James McArthur comes into the Wigan first XI in place of David Jones. Sir Alex Ferguson, in contrast, makes five alterations to the Manchester United team that lined up against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend. Rafael and Rio Ferdinand slot into the visitors' back four in place of Chris Smalling and Nemanja Vidic, while Ryan Giggs takes Antonio Valencia's spot in midfield. Javier Hernandez and Robin Van Persie start up top, with Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa named amongst the United substitutes.
0' FULL LINE-UP - MANCHESTER UNITED
De Gea, Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Giggs, Carrick, Cleverley, Young, van Persie, Hernandez. Subs: Lindegaard, Valencia, Smalling, Vidic, Wellbeck, Scholes, Kagawa.
0' FULL LINE-UP - WIGAN ATHLETIC
Al Habsi, Figueroa, Caldwell, Ramis, Boyce, McArthur, McCarthy, Beausejour, Maloney, Di Santo, Kone. Subs: Pollitt, Jones, Gomez, McManaman, Boselli, Stam, Golobart.
0' REF WATCH
Andre Marriner, from Birmingham, will oversee events at the DW this afternoon. The 41-year-old referee is yet to dismiss a player in any competition this season, despite taking charge of 15 matches in the Premier League, Championship, Capital One Cup and Europa League.
0' SQUAD NEWS
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has no new injury worries in the wake of the 3-0 win at Villa Park, although long-term casualties Ben Watson, Albert Crusat, Ryo Miyaichi, Adrian Lopez and Antolin Alcaraz all remain sidelined. Robin van Persie, who scored as a substitute on Saturday afternoon, is expected to be named in the Manchester United starting XI, whilst Phil Jones and Rafael could both return to the league leaders' back four.
0' PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Wigan finally recorded a victory over Manchester United at the DW back in April, as Shaun Maloney made a little piece of Latics history with a second half strike that severely dented the Red Devils' championship charge. Normal service was resumed at Old Trafford earlier this season however, as Paul Scholes, Javier Hernandez, Alexander Buttner and Nick Powell all scored in a 4-0 win in mid-September, United's 14th triumph in the 15 meetings between the two clubs.
0' PREVIEW
Premier League leaders Manchester United take on Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium this afternoon, as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to celebrate his 71st birthday with another three points. It's been a merry Christmas so far for the Red Devils, who followed the 1-1 draw at Swansea with a barnstorming 4-3 Boxing Day victory over Newcastle and a 2-0 win against West Brom to extend their cushion at the top of the table to seven points. On paper then, the visitors should make short work of a Latics side that have picked up just one win from their last six matches, although the emphatic nature of Wigan's 3-0 victory at Villa Park last time out may give United pause for thought. So too will the result of last season's meeting between these two sides at the DW, when Roberto Martinez's side recorded their first ever win against the Red Devils, a defeat which ultimately proved fatal to United's title hopes. The game kicks off at 1500GMT; join us for all the team news and build-up from 1415GMT.
