Newcastle United vs. Everton
Minute Commentary
90' GREAT GAME
Well, we have been treated to a feast of football tonight. Newcastle started the game in blistering fashion and went ahead through Papiss Cisse and a good header after two minutes. The home side continued to press and could have extended their lead through a range of sources, but it was Everton who grabbed the next goal with an absolute rocket of a free-kick from Leighton Baines. Everton pressed in the second half but both sides had plenty of the ball and several chances, but it was substitute Victor Anichebe who grabbed the winner with a tap-in following a Nikica Jelavic cross. A nasty clash of heads between Anichebe and Philip Neville meant a lengthy stoppage, but after 97 minutes the Toffees are the ones to start 2013 with a win. Final score Newcastle 1 - 2 Everton.
90' FULL TIME
The referee ends the game and the boos ring out around St James' Park. Everton have won tonight by two goals to one.
90' NEARLY OVER
Everton have a free kick and that must surely be it.
90' ALL EVERTON
The away side are not just holding on to their lead, but are trying to extend it. Baines bombs down the left but is robbed of the ball. He's in no rush to take the resulting throw-in, however.
90' NERVY
Everton are trying to hold the ball but Newcastle are desperate to get it back and attack. As it stands, Everton will take all three points but there are still three minutes left.
90' ADDED TIME
Six minutes are given as additional time. Not a surprise really, but tense for Everton fans.
90' LATE CHALLENGE
Papiss Cisse slides in late on Leon Osman and is warned by the referee. The striker has already been booked and has to be careful.
88' EVERTON CHANGE
Nikica Jelavic leaves the field with Bryan Oviedo taking his place.
87' NEWCASTLE FINAL CHANGE
Nile Ranger takes the place of James Perch. An attacking move by Alan Pardew.
86' NEARLY OUT OF TIME
Newcastle are desperate for a result here, but are running out of time to do it. That said, there will be some injury time after that clash of heads.
85' GOOD COMMITMENT
Leon Osman, who has been quiet tonight, busts a lung to get back and rob the ball from the toes of Gael Bigirimana. Great professionalism there.
83' PLAY CONTINUES
Tim Howard receives the ball and restarts play with both Neville and Anichebe off the pitch.
82' WORRYING
Philip Neville is still bleeding heavily and he may have to get some further medical attention, whilst Victor Anichebe seems very dazed. Everton are going to be down to nine men for a moment or two.
81' CLASH OF HEADS
Philip Neville and Victor Anichebe are both bleeding heavily from head wounds as they both went to clear the same ball. Great commitment from both players but not a good end result.
80' NEWCASTLE SUB
As we enter the final 10 minutes, Sammy Ameobi comes on for Cheik Tiote. Meanwhile, Steven Pienaar picks up a booking.
78' CLOSE!
It is indeed Baines to have another go despite a lengthy discussion with Nikica Jelavic. However, his effort is up and over the ball but just wide of the post.
77' KNOCK
Marouane Fellaini is brought down on the edge of the box by Gael Bigirimana and looks in some pain. However, the Everton fans are urging Leighton Baines to have another shot.
76' PRESSING FORWARD
Newcastle's defenders are pushing up, trying to force Everton back. The Toffees hit back through Fellaini, but he loses the ball to a good Cheik Tiote challenge.
74' FIGHTING BACK
Newcastle are pressing hard to get back into this game. They win a series of corners but cannot make them count, despite some good movement.
72' TOP SAVE
Leighton Baines swings in a ball from the left and it connects with the shin of Marouane Fellaini, forcing Tim Krul into a late save.
69' OFF THE LINE!
Newcastle are unlucky here. A long free-kick finds Papiss Cisse unmarked in the area, and his headed effort is cleared off the line before a second shot from the striker is saved by Tim Howard.
68' HANDBAGS AND BOOKINGS
Cheik Tiote slides in late and hard on Phil Jagielka, and the Everton man doesn't like it. The referee books Tiote and makes both men shake hands.
66' NEWCASTLE CHANGE
Gael Bigirimana comes on for another appearance, replacing Gabriel Obertan. It seems that Sylvain Marveaux is moving out to the left flank. Relief for John Heitinga.
65' GOOD RUN
Gabriel Obertan surges into the box, past John Heitinga, and his low shot is saved by Tim Howard. Poor defending by Heitinga there.
64' GOOD SUBSTITUTION
Victor Anichebe has proved to be an inspired signing. Not happy with his goal, the attacker surges forward and wins his side a corner, which comes to nothing.
62' UNHAPPY
The home fans are not happy with that goal. The Newcastle defence just seemed to switch off and Everton made them pay. The Toffees fans are understandably jubilant.
60' GREAT PLAY
A good team goal here for the visitors. Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic combine passes down the left, and the latter plays the ball into the area. Substitute Victor Anichebe times his run perfectly to get past Davide Santon and tap the ball home. A full turnaround. Newcastle 1 - 2 Everton.
60' GOOOOAAAAALLLL
EVERTON TAKE THE LEAD!!!
59' EVERTON CHANGE
The disappointing Steven Naismith is replaced by Victor Anichebe.
58' JUST WIDE
Shola Ameobi controls a long ball and pokes goalwards, but his effort is just wide under pressure from Sylvain Distin.
57' GOOD RUN
Sylvain Marveaux bursts forward unchallenged from midfield and his ball across goal is good, but Steven Naismith is there to clear.
55' JOSTLING
The referee has to step in and have a word as the players jostle in the box as they await an Everton free kick.
53' BOOKING
Mike Williamson is booked after losing the ball to Nikica Jelavic and then hauling the striker down.
52' HOME COMFORTS
One thing you know about St James' Park is that every single positive move by the home side will be met with a wall of noise. Tonight is no different, as a good corner is almost roared in by the home fans.
50' SETTLED
The game hasn't quite found a rhythm in the second half and the ball is being knocked around in midfield a lot. The strikers need to make some space for themselves.
48' IMITATION
Newcastle win their own free-kick 30 yards from goal and Sylvain Marveaux tries to copy Leighton Baines, but his effort crashes into the wall.
47' YELLOW CARD
John Heitinga is booked for a foul on Shola Ameobi.
46' GOOD START
The half has started just as the first ended. Both sides are giving it their all and the fans love it.
46' KICK OFF
Everton start the second period.
45' FANTASTIC HALF OF FOOTBALL
Well, what a way for both of these teams to start 2013. Newcastle took the lead within two minutes as some sloppy Everton defending allowed Papiss Cisse to head home. The half continued in frantic fashion and both sides had chances, but Everton equalised just before the interval with a superb Leighton Baines free kick. Newcastle have been arguably on top but need to work hard for victory here. Newcastle 1, Everton 1.
45' HALF TIME
The referee ends the half, and the home fans aren't happy with that Everton equaliser and make their voices heard.
45' ADDED TIME
One minute is signalled as additional time.
43' ABSOLUTE THUNDERBOLT
Curse of the commentator, I tell you. Leighton Baines puts his boot through a free-kick from 35 yards out and it bends wickedly round the wall, before leaving Tim Krul with absolutely no chance of stopping it. Wonderful stuff. Newcastle 1 - 1 Everton.
43' GOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL
WHAT A GOAL FROM LEIGHTON BAINES!!!
42' RUNNING IT DOWN
The half-time break is approaching but the fans are still cheering their teams forward. There's more goals in this one, I can feel it, but it would take a braver man than me to predict which way they'll go.
40' BOOKING
Papiss Cisse is the first man to be shown the yellow card for a late challenge on Leighton Baines. Not great from the striker.
38' NOT THEMSELVES
Everton have won many plaudits this season for their style of football, as well as their good results. They haven't been able to find their stride tonight due to the likes of Anita and Tiote hassling them.
36' FRUSTRATING
Everton have lacked the quality in the final ball tonight. Steven Naismith in particular has looked off the pace and could be withdrawn if he carries on like this.
35' GREAT CROSS
Davide Santon gets down the left with a mazy run and sends in a lovely cross. Vurnon Anita stretches to meet it but cannot quite get there and Tim Howard gathers gratefully.
32' GREAT PLAY
Leighton Baines sends in a great through-ball down the left flank and Steven Pienaar runs past the static defence. His dinked effort is stopped with ease by Tim Krul.
31' SLOWED
The pace of the game has settled after a frantic half-hour. I'm sure it's just the calm before another storm.
29' OFF THE POST!
Newcastle have a corner, which is swung over from the right, and a powerful header from Papiss Cisse cannons back into play off the upright. A let-off for Everton there.
27' OFFSIDE - OR NOT
Gabriel Obertan picks up the ball after a long clearance from Krul, but despite being yards offside the flag doesn't go up. That is poor from the assistant referee.
25' END TO END
Both teams are giving this a good go. Minutes after Everton break through Jelavic and Fellaini, Newcastle hit back with Shola Ameobi. This is thrilling stuff.
23' UNLUCKY
Steven Naismith works his way down the right and crosses low for Marouane Fellaini, but the Belgian gets the ball stuck in his feet and cannot get the shot away.
23' POOR FINISHING
Leighton Baines steps up to swing in a free kick from the left, and Steven Naismith meets it with his head. Unfortunately the former Rangers man gets it all wrong and his downward effort is easily collected by Krul.
20' QUIET
Everton's midfield have been very quiet so far. The likes of Marouane Fellaini and Leon Osman should have more freedom due to the return of Philip Neville, but they look tired and jaded.
18' FEISTY
Both Cheik Tiote and Vurnon Anita have flown in with some tough challenges in the last few moments. No cards shown as yet, but if they carry on as they have been then it won't be too long.
17' LIVELY
The fans are playing their part in making this an entertaining fixture. Both sets of fans are known for their passion and enthusiasm and it is certainly evident tonight.
14' FIGHTING BACK
Everton are coming back into this after a spell of Newcastle pressure. Steven Pienaar tries to make something happen with a jinking run, but his low shot is gathered easily by Tim Krul.
12' GOOD WIDTH
Newcastle are using their wide men to great effect tonight. Phil Jagielka is not a natural full-back for Everton and Gabriel Obertan is having a lot of joy up against him.
10' TURNING THE SCREW
Everton are looking shaky at the back. Their defending was poor for the goal, and now they are make uncharacteristic mistakes. David Moyes isn't happy.
8' WORKING HARD
Both sides have got players who are willing to run and chase the ball, trying hard to get it back for their team. The attacking players on the pitch aren't short of quality either.
5' END TO END
Newcastle are under the cosh here. Leighton Baines has two chances within a number of minutes, but Tim Krul is more than equal to them both. This has the making of a cracker.
3' ROCKETING START
'Demba who?' cry the Newcastle fans. Their side have looked outstanding in the early going and have got Everton on the back foot.
1' POOR DEFENDING
The home side are ahead through Papiss Cisse. The Everton defence got into a mix-up on the edge of the box and the Senegalese striker stepped up to head home. Newcastle 1 - 0 Everton.
1' GOOOOAAAAALLLL
NEWCASTLE ARE AHEAD!!!
1' KICK OFF
We're underway here at St James' Park.
0' WILL PLAY FOR TOFFEES
Everton were in Newcastle's shoes this time last year, attempting to recover from a crippling injury crisis that had them well out of contention by Christmas. Ironically, the stocking is very much on the other foot this time around, David Moyes no doubt scrawling ‘MORE OF THE SAME' in big letters on the first page of the mini diary he found lurking at the bottom amongst the satsumas and bite-size Mars bars. A clean bill of health (only Gibson, Neville and a longer-term problem with Kevin Mirallas blot the copybook today), fine form, and the prospect of moving to within two points of Chelsea in fourth should the Blues trip up against QPR. Had you offered that to the Merseysiders following their 3-1 home defeat of Newcastle on the final day of last season, they would have snatched it quicker than a Marouane Fellaini (returning today) apology. A narrow loss to Chelsea on Sunday marked their fifteenth consecutive failure to keep a clean sheet in a busy week that saw the table stretch out considerably. The chance to get back to winning ways against the beleaguered Magpies could be just what they need.
0' TOON ILL
Just what exactly accounts for Newcastle's dramatic loss of form this season is a multi-faceted scenario rooted mostly in the unfortunate fact that they've had more injuries than an alcoholic ski jumping convention. Consequently, stretched to the limit squad-wise, Alan Pardew's insistence on fielding a strong side for Europa League Thursdays has put serious strain on a disjointed rabble. Interestingly, they have yet to suffer the long-term absence of prize front men Ba and Cisse, but neither have looked as potent as they were last term, despite Ba's 13 league goals. Reports today that Ba is in talks with Chelsea means that he will miss tonight's game however. Cheik Tiote returned in anger on Saturday, but a catalogue of defensive errors so long it made Aston Villa look well-organised saw them crash 7-3 to Arsenal, and Danny Simpson also joined the fallen with a broken toe. Four at Old Trafford three days earlier added to their spirit of festive generosity. Relegation will not be a consideration, but it is now a case of gathering some momentum and fending off the covetous magpies from further south who will be hovering once all the shiny things have been given out.
0' PREVIEW
There's no doubt that the Premier League is in crisis. After over two thousand goals last year, this year we've only seen twenty-three. Indeed, neither of these teams have managed to find the net at all this year. Newcastle have yet to win and not a single fan has attended a game at their stadium after capacity crowds of over 45,000 last year. On the other hand, Everton are undefeated and have yet to concede so far, so the chances of the Magpies opening their account today are slim. Last year saw thrilling 8-0's, 7-3's and 4-4's. Alas only Man. United's easy 4-0 stroll at Wigan has seen a high score this year. Fears that fans may turn away from Premier League football are certainly valid. Something must be done to arrest the lack of excitement. Otherwise we may see people poached by more action-packed leagues or other sports all together.
