Arsenal vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
90' FINAL SCORE: ARSENAL 0, MANCHESTER CITY 2
An interesting cameo right at the death as Joleon Lescott shook the referee's assistant's hand and television cameras caught him saying to the defender 'There's some people who've paid 62 quid over there, go and see them.' A noble sentiment from that gentleman and a point well made in light of how this game swung so violently in favour of the visitors at the card-happy hands of his colleague Mike Dean. The teams had felt each other out uneventfully until the 20th minute when Edin Dzeko got a sight of goal and Laurent Koscielny manhandled him to the ground. Certainly a penalty, but Dean also produced a red card and, though Dzeko's pinball spot-kick could not find it's way over the line, City soon emphasised their numerical advantage through a crisp James Milner strike and the Bosnian himself, tapping in a rebound after Tevez had forced Wojciech Szczesny to parry his shot. Coming into the game, the absence of Aguero, Nasri and the Toures for the visitors seemed to point to an even more closely contested affair than usual between Wenger and Mancini, but Dean's intervention unquestionably put paid to that. The Gunners fought gamely on and the tie became a pulsating encounter for much of the second period, Wenger having introduced Olivier Giroud and a more direct style of play. They could not make the breakthrough though and City had their fair share of opportunities to kill it off, none more so than Carlos Tevez's failure to round Szczesny when through on goal. Dean again hogged the spotlight fifteen minutes from time as Vincent Kompany saw red for what looked to be a ball-winning 50-50 challenge on Jack Wilshere, despite the presence of both his feet. City will certainly appeal, as will the Gunners, for whom the toll has been more heavily paid. City restore the gap to seven points, the title remains in the balance, controversy rules once more and everyone can have a jolly good moan. All is as usual in the Premier League then. I doubt we'll be seeing any refunds though.
90' ALL OVER
That's it. City come away with the points and the press men ready themselves for the torrential Wenger-shaped tirade about to come their way. This time he probably has a point. Full-time: Arsenal 0, Manchester City 2.
90' THEO SO CLOSE
Ooh, Theo Walcott has a shot cleared off the line by Lescott with Hart beaten before Giroud prods an innocuous toe-poke into the keeper's arms from a Gibbs centre. Kolarov replaces Silva as we enter five minutes of stoppage time.
90' SNACK TIME
Matija Nastasic is down after a hearty helping of a Giroud-Hart sandwich. Here comes Mario for Dzeko, sporting a low-key blonde mohican. Arsenal travel to Stamford Bridge next weekend to face Chelsea. That text commentary will be available in 3D, and we'll be unveiling a new high-definition font.
85' ASKING QUESTIONS
Giroud is yet again well-placed but Sagna's cut-back is intercepted by Garcia. The F.A. appeals panel will have a busy day tomorrow no doubt. We've had five yellow cards on top of the dismissals in what has been a fairly-contested encounter without any real malice.
83' SEE IT OUT
You'd expect the champions to hold on now with the sides even. The game has slowed a little but the crowd have come to life as Milner slashes a shot high and wide. Mike Dean applied the letter of the law there but on replay it looks very, very harsh.
79' TWO'S KOMPANY
So Mike Dean's itchy palms have stamped their mark on the game once more with yet another contentious decision. Sure he lead with both feet did Kompany, but Wilshere was right on top of him and it didn't look like there any other way to challange the Englishman. Kompany was understanably furious as he left the pitch and Joleon Lescott has replaced Carlos Tevez to sure up the City defence.
75' RED
We're even! Vincent Kompany is off! A two-footed lunge on Jack Wilshere from which he clearly took some of the ball but Mike Dean obviously felt it warranted a straight red card.
74' FRENCH MISSING
Cazorla whips in a free-kick from the left and Giroud rises but can't quite nod it under Joe Hart's cross-bar. He is by no means the finished article that man. He should've got Arsenal back into the game there, it was a golden opportunity.
71' SPURNED
Carlos Tevez was through one-on-one with Szczesny there after a lovely through-ball from Dzeko but he couldn't round the keeper who got fingers on the ball. Arsenal come again. It's end-to-end stuff at the Emirates.
71' ALL ACTION
Milner lofts in a cross that Sagna has to put out for a corner with Tevez lurking. It's played short and wasted slightly by Silva. Sagna hauls Dzeko down before Giroud gives Mike Dean a piece of his mind for not intervening as he vaulted over Garcia and seemed to handle the ball. That was puzzling.
67' OPENING UP
Joe Hart releases Dzeko on the counter after he gathers another dangerous ball but he can't find Tevez in the middle. It's a good open game now as Wilshere fires in a nice free-kick that Kompany has to clear away from the advancing Giroud. It falls to Cazorla whose shot is wide.
65' CITY PROBE
Silva looks for Tevez on the penalty spot before Dzeko is twice denied by good defending as he looked to pull the trigger. Then Wilshere goes into the book for a challenge on Garcia in the build-up.
63' TO JAVI AND TO HOLD
Now Garcia fluffs his lines as he enters the penalty area on the left but can't find Silva with men over. Aaron Ramsey replaces Diaby for the Gunners.
61' GIROUD CLOSE
Bacary Sagna swings in an inviting ball for the Frenchman's first touch from which he can't quite replicate old Gunners hero Robin Van Persie's deft finish earlier in the day. A goal for the home side would set us up for an exciting final third of the game.
58' SQUARING UP
It's turning into a right royal tussle between Diaby and Wilshere and their opposite numbers Silva and Barry. What a shame this one was kiboshed from the off, a fair fight between these two sides would have been a fine spectacle. Here comes Olivier Giroud for Lukas Podolski.
54' GUNNERS COMING
Wilshere strokes a dangerous set-piece in before Kieran Gibbs thrashes a long-ranger which is charged down. The crowd have come to life a little, this is good from the hosts.
51' LIFE IN IT YET
Santi Cazorla looks for Theo Walcott who has space to run into, but the Spaniard can't find him. Just a chink of light there. You'd think Mancini will have said to his side they need at least one more to be sure of things here, so spaces could open up for Arsenal on the counter. Edin Dzeko nods a lovely Milner cross just over. That was almost it.
46' UNDER WAY ONCE MORE
Here we go again then, Arsenal kick off. What have they got in their locker?
45' ALL OVER AT THE BREAK
As I've no doubt made abundantly clear, whether or not Laurent Koscielny deserved an early bath has pretty much decided this football match within half an hour. Edin Dzeko did his best to make a game of it with a mediocre spot-kick, but since then City have done what you'd expect them to do, and Roberto Mancini will be thankful a potential banana skin has been made so negotiable by the action of the man with the whistle. Only a storm of Biblical proportions, a plague of locusts, a power failure or perhaps Mario Balotelli's introduction could prevent a sky blue win this afternoon. We'll be back to a seven pont gap at the top by six o'clock. Join us shortly for the necessaries...
45' HALF-TIME
If you were a boxing referee you'd probably call time on this one already. It's been a bit of a training exercise for City in the past few minutes, only Thomas Vermaelen's rash challenge and yellow card disrupting a succession of passes for the visitors. The star of the first half, Mike Dean, blows for half-time.
45' HALF-TIME APPROACHING
Jack Wilshere strokes a peach of a free-kick into the box from 30 yards which no-one can direct a meaningful head upon before City win a corner which the amply aerially adept Garcia yet again powers towards goal and little Wilshere has to leap like a salmon to clear off the line. There really is an air of nonchalance around the Emirates though, the crowd are quiet save for the odd call of 'Mancini!'
41' STROKING OUR CHINS
As Dzeko broke for goal with the ball at his feet, Koscielny clearly had two hands around his waist, there's no question about that, it was certainly a penalty. However, he still had the keeper to beat and that was not a certainty, so the question would be whether the Frenchman denied City a 'clear goal-scoring opportunity'. Surely, that is up for debate and so therefore Arsenal can count themselves unlucky to be a man down and the game running away from them.
37' SCRATCHING OF HEADS
Manchester City play it around nonchalantly, happy to let the depleted Gunners chase the ball. After fifteen minutes of drama, you rather feel that the air might fizzle out of the encounter unless the Gunners can find a reply smartish. As seems endlessly to be the case these days, all the talk at half-time will be about a game-changing decision enacted by Mike Dean.
32' 2-0
So City look to be cruising this one now on the half-hour mark. Milner was again involved, fizzing a cross into the six-yard box which Tevez stabbed at Szczesny who couldn't hold it and there was Dzeko to tap in.
32' GOOOAAALLL!!!
It's two! Dzeko this time.
31' TRADING PUNCHES
City have the Gunners penned back as Tevez and Silva can't quite combine on the edge , but then Walcott, Cazorla and, as you do, centre-back Vermaelen lead a fast break that comes to nothing.
29' CITY ON TOP NOW
Roberto Mancini's men are making their advantage tell now as Javi Garcia rises highest to meet a corner. I wouldn't say it has been a game of high quality so far, but you certainly can't take your eyes off it.
24' TEVEZ HITS THE POLE
Now Pablo Zabaleta is convinced that Lukas Podolski has struck him with an elbow as the Argentine goes down with a bloody lip before Carlos Tevez tests Szczesny from 20 yards out, though it's straight at the Pole.
21' CITY LEAD
A fine finish from Milner as Arsenal went to sleep a little from a free kick 40 yards out in the middle. David Silva took it quickly, Gareth Barry fed Milner with a nice slide-rule pass and the Englishman beat Szczesny clinically from the angle on the right high into the top corner.
21' GOOAAAALLL!!!
James Milner!
20' GUNNERS CHARGING
Theo Walcott slashes a shot high and wide from a corner as Arsenal suddenly look strongest. It's opened up. How often have we said it?: All the game needed was a controversial sending off and penalty!
16' IT'S ALL HAPPENING
So after ten minutes of incidentlessness we suddenly have drama. Koscielny clearly had hold of Dzeko as he tried to run onto a through-ball but you have to ask whether a penalty AND a red card were necessary. Though Arsenal haven't conceded, they're down to ten men, Per Mertesacker has come on for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to fill the gap and they now have un uphill struggle on their hands.
10' MISSED!
Ooohh, SO CLOSE! It struck Wojciech Szczesny, hit the post and rolled back along the line for the keeper to gather. It never crossed the line though, we're still all square.
9' PENALTY
And a red card. Laurent Koscielny is off for pulling Dzeko down. And the Bosnian is stepping up...
9' SLOW START
A underwhelminfg start to the game with defenses on top. Neither side have quite found time or spacde to thread a ball through. You can see why these sides have cancelled one another out so often. It's a pretty compact affair but, as I say that, a corner falls to Vincent Kompany who can't quite strike it through a crowd of players.
6' OUT AND ABOU-T
It's nice to see Abou Diaby 's gangly figure back in the middle of the Emirates pitch. The loss of Alex Song in the summer was his big cue but injury intervened cruelly so he looks happy to be involved despite perhaps being a little rusty.
3' JACK IN THE BOX
The visitors draw first blood as Jack Wilshere has to slide in and divert a dangerous Carlos Tevez run out of play for a corner which doesn't quite fall for anyone on the edge of the area.
1' UNDERWAY
Here we go, Arsenal in their home red, City the familiar sky blue.
0' WELCOME ALONG
Welcome to the Emirates. It's a brisk afternoon in North London and it will certainly feel a lot colder for Roberto Mancini if he comes away with anything less than maximum points. United's impressive victory over Liverpool has heaped all manner of pressure on the champions. A slip up today and you'd have to say Sir Alex Ferguson will be off down the ribbon stall on Salford Market. No Aguero, so Dzeko gets the nod for the visitors, whilst Abou Diaby returns for Arsenal, therefore Aaron Ramsey must be content with a place on the bench, alongside Olivier Giroud. Here are the sides in full, join us shortly for full match commentary. Arsenal: Szczesny, Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Diaby, Wilshere, Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Podolski, Walcott. Subs: Mannone, Mertesacker, Andre Santos, Giroud, Ramsey, Coquelin, Jenkinson. Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy, Javi Garcia, Barry, Milner, Silva, Tevez, Dzeko. Subs: Pantilimon, Lescott, Sinclair, Kolarov, Suarez, Rekik, Balotelli.
0' PREVIEW:ARSENAL VS. MANCHESTER CITY
A big day of Premier League football culminates with two footballing purists going head to head for the seventh time. Messrs Wenger and Mancini have suffered their fair share of trials and tribulations in the past few months and each will see a strong finish to the season as crucial to securing the confidence of their respective boards of directors. Wenger's frugal approach continues to compromise the progress of his always fluid side whilst Mancini's spendthrift owners don't seem entirely convinced that he has what it takes after another early exit from Europe, despite rumours that further additions to his squad could be made in the current transfer window. Encounters between the two are traditionally low-scoring affairs, eight goals in all from seven games. Laurent Koscielny cancelled out Joleon Lescott's opener at the Etihad in September, and only the Gunners 3-0 win there back in 2010 has yielded more than one goal, with two wins a piece and three draws in total. The hosts will draw level with Everton in fifth position if they secure the points, whilst City could close the gap on United at the top to two points if the Sir Alex Ferguson's menslip up against Liverpool. Were the Red Devils to beat their Merseyside rivals and City draw a blank at the Emirates, few would bet against the title returning to Old Trafford come May.
0' WHAT'S IN THE ARSENAL?
A few doubts in the Gunners camp before this one. Abou Diaby returned to competitive play for the Under-21s in midweek, but whether he is match fit enough to last the distance in the Premier League after three months out is up to his manager. Olivier Giroud is also battling to overcome a cut knee he sustained in the cup against Swansea last week. Unbeaten in five in the league, free-scoring Arsenal have taken 13 points from 15 in the league and coming back to earn a hard-fought draw against the Swans emphasised the increasing steel in the spine of this version of Wenger's ever-evolving proteges. Convincing Theo Walcott to sign a new contract and deciding whether he should grant Thierry Henry yet another cameo at the Emirates are top of the Frenchman's to-do list at the moment. Striding menacingly up to his squad in the dressing room recently concealing a polaroid, he made it clear in no uncertain terms, 'If you don't produce the goods this man will return'. They all shrank back aghast as he revealed the picture of Marouane Chamakh.
0' THE NOT-SO STABLE
It's very much been distractions of an extra-curricular nature that have arguably held the City squad back from getting into their stride of late. If not Mancini and Balotelli's training ground wrestle-off or allegations of racial abuse directed in Alexander Kolarov's direction (of which he's now been cleared), the Etihad always has the odd contractual dispute to upset things, Carlos Tevez the man in question at the moment. Surely the kind of settled regime established across town at Old Trafford should be a long-term goal for the cash-rich, patience-poor owners of the sky blue half of Manchester. A careless Boxing Day loss to Sunderland and defeat to their city rivals stick out ominously in an otherwise consistent end to the year. However, at least a month without talisman Yaya Toure now begins, his brother having also joined him in South Africa. Sergio Aguero and the suspended Samir Nasri add to a not insignificantly depleted squad that will make the journey south. It truly is a make-or-break afternoon for the fate of the title and, perhaps, the security of Mancini's tenure in the north-west.
