Manchester United vs. Liverpool
Minute Commentary
90' MANCHESTER UNITED 2 LIVERPOOL 1
A cracking game overall, that really got going in the second half when Liverpool decided to join the party. Manchester United took the lead through Robin van Persie on 18 minutes following a quiet start to the game, and they saw out the rest of the half in comfortable fashion with Liverpool looking well below par. Liverpool looked somewhat vitalised by the introduction of Daniel Sturridge after half time who went on to be their star performer in the half, yet they conceded again on 53 minutes when Nemanja Vidic got the final touch on a Robin van Persie free kick. Liverpool responded soon after through Sturridge and put United on the ropes for much of the rest of the game, but some clever defensive substitutions from Fergie helped ensure they saw out their lead to pick up an important three points, extending their lead at the top of the table before Manchester City play Arsenal shortly.
90' FULL TIME
Manchester United have held on to beat Liverpool 2-1.
90' LATE BOOKING
We're on the verge of full time as Daniel Agger is carded for a challenge born out of frustration. Manchester United have a free kick deep in the Liverpool half.
90' HEADER CAUGHT
Luis Suarez drops a glancing header straight into the arms of David de Gea. Two minutes to go...
90' CHEEKY FINISH
An exquisite Robin Van Persie finish that was a sort of backheel is saved by Pepe Reina to his left.
90' SIDE NETTING
Liverpool work a quick free kick to Daniel Sturridge who fires into the side netting. Four minutes of injury time have been signalled.
87' ALL LIVERPOOL
A further barrage from Liverpool followed that Daniel Sturridge chance minutes ago, and they're having all the possession at the moment. We're in for a tense finish, that's for sure.
84' WHAT A CHANCE
The ball falls perfectly for Daniel Sturridge after Luis Suarez and Rafael tussle for it in the box, but he blazes over with a rushed finish.
81' NOTE ON THE GOAL
Nemanja Vidic got the final touch on Robin van Persie's free kick for United's second goal and has been credited with it.
80' TIRED LEGS
Danny Welbeck exchanges a one-two with Robin van Persie, outrunning Andre Wisdom and Daniel Sturridge before falling on his backside upon reaching the byline. He has put a real shift in, to be fair...
79' CHANGES FOR BOTH SIDES
Chris Smalling comes on for Nemanja Vidic shortly before Jordan Henderson replaces Joe Allen.
76' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
Phil Jones is on for Shinji Kagawa as Manchester United look to see out their lead.
75' YELLOW CARD
Glen Johnson goes into Howard Webb's book this time for a challenge from behind on Patrice Evra.
74' WRONG DECISION
A Steven Gerrard free kick is headed behind by Nemanja Vidic, yet for some reason a goal kick is awarded.
73' CAUTION
Patrice Evra runs across the back of Stewart Downing, bringing him down and earning himself a yellow card.
71' BORINI CHANCE
Daniel Sturridge cuts in from the right to find Fabio Borini in the 'D', who tees himself up for a volley that flies several yards over.
69' STURRIDGE WIDE
Luis Suarez plays a peach of a cross-field pass from right to left where Daniel Sturridge is waiting. The substitute shows Rio Ferdinand some trickery before fizzing a shot wide of the near post.
66' LONG-RANGE EFFORT
Defenders back off Glen Johnson, but the Liverpool man drills a low shot yards wide of the target from way out.
63' KAGAWA DENIED
Danny Welbeck threads a pass through to Shinji Kagawa, who draws a fine flying save by Pepe Reina to his left.
62' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTION
Fabio Borini replaces Raheem Sterling, who in the first half particularly was anonymous.
61' INTO THE WALL
Robin van Persie crashes a poor free kick into the wall and Liverpool clear. A Reds change is imminent.
58' WHAT NOW?
Liverpool have improved considerably since the break - they had to - and you felt they were unfortunate to go further behind. They certainly look buoyed by the goal now, and Luis Suarez has benefitted from the arrival of Daniel Sturridge to link up with him in the final third.
56' GOOOOOOOOOAL!
Liverpool get one back just three minutes after Patrice Evra's goal. David de Gea pushes a Steven Gerrard shot straight into the path of DANIEL STURRIDGE, who pokes in from yards out ten minutes after coming on. Game on!
53' GOOOOAL!
PATRICE EVRA gets goal-side of Glen Johnson from the subsequent free kick taken by Robin van Persie, nodding in from close-range at the back post to double Manchester United's lead.
52' BOOKING
Martin Skrtel tugs down Danny Welbeck who looked to be the last man. The referee is sympathetic to Skrtel, however, and just shows a yellow card.
51' DEFENDER'S FINISH
Manchester United launch a counter-attack before Liverpool do the same to them, with Luis Suarez haring upfield and into the box. He sets up Andre Wisdom for a shot to his right, but the finish is wayward from the off-balance right-back.
49' ALWAYS GOING OVER
Robin van Persie leans back as he steps up to hit a free kick from 30 yards, sending the ball flying over the upright.
47' CHANGE OF APPROACH
Yup, it looks like Sturridge will partner Luis Suarez up front in something that is as close as Brendan Rodgers' gets to playing a four-four-two system. Danny Welbeck has the first shot of the half which doesn't find the target.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
Changes apiece at the start of the second half. Antonio Valencia comes on for Ashley Young who picked up that knock to his knee in the first period, while Daniel Sturridge replaces Lucas Leiva for Liverpool.
45' HALF TIME
Manchester United are a goal up at the break thanks to a goal from the prolific Robin van Persie.
45' MANCHESTER UNITED 1 LIVERPOOL 0
A deserved lead for Manchester United at the halfway stage, then. A slow start to the game saw Liverpool sit back defend solidly, allowing United little in the way of chances. Robin van Persie put his side a goal up on 18 minutes, though, slotting home coolly with Patrice Evra providing the assist. The home team grew in confidence after that, seizing on a number of Liverpool errors to create several chances, with Danny Welbeck in particular making full use of this opportunity for him to make an impression. Liverpool have offered absolutely nothing at the other end, with a ballooned Luis Suarez strike being the only thing close to a chance that I can recall.
45' FIRST BOOKING
Lucas Leiva is shown the yellow card for a cynical foul on Ashley Young as we near the end of the half.
44' BIG CHANCE
It started with a superb aerial pass from Michael Carrick, who dropped the ball into the box for Rafael. The full-back sends the ball across goal for Robin van Persie who tries an elaborate drag-back finish with the underside of his foot, before Shinji Kagawa to the left of him completely misses the follow-up opportunity. Martin Skrtel makes a hasty clearance.
43' SKRTEL TO THE RESCUE
Lax play again from Liverpool inside their own half sees Andre Wisdom gift the ball to Danny Welbeck who quickly finds strike partner Robin van Persie. Martin Skrtel is on hand to make an important tackle that stops the Dutchman in his tracks.
40' CLEVERLEY VOLLEYS
An Ashley Young cross is headed out only as far as an unmarked Tom Cleverley, who fires a volley over the bar. The midfielder was in a decent position but it was a tricky one to execute.
38' UNCHARACTERISTIC
Luis Suarez runs at the Manchester United defence before shifting the ball left to Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool captain makes an awful unforced error, tapping the ball forward to no one in particular, summing up what his side have offered going forward in this half.
36' FIRST REDS SHOT
Luis Suarez turns Rio Ferdinand and flashes a shot way over the bar. I think that might have been Liverpool's first shot in this game.
34' WELBECK THREATENING
Another chance for Danny Welbeck sees him fed a pass by Tom Cleverley before teasing Andre Wisdom with his quick feet. A final snap shot across goal is always rising.
33' BODY ON THE LINE
Danny Welbeck takes advantage to drive forward into the Liverpool box and get a shot off, which is superbly blocked by Daniel Agger.
31' PHYSIO ON
Ashley Young goes off to receive treatment for a knock to his knee on the sidelines following a short stoppage.
29' DYNAMIC UNCHANGED
The goal hasn't really prompted a drastic change in approach from Liverpool, who are by and large still playing quite deep. Manchester United continue to take the initiative albeit while looking markedly more content.
26' VAN PERSIE AGAIN
Robin van Persie times his run to perfection, squeezing into a gap in the Liverpool defence to receive a pass from Ashley Young. His first-time left-footed finish has to be quick, though, and he can't keep it down.
22' SHAKEN
Steven Gerrard almost lets Robin van Persie slip through for another opportunity, but makes amends by recovering to make the necessary sliding challenge.
18' GOOOOOOOAL!
Goal number 21 this season from that man ROBIN VAN PERSIE! Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley link up again, this time prior to spreading the ball left to Patrice Evra. The full-back puts one on a plate for Van Persie who strokes home with ease.
17' SHOT BLOCKED
Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverly combine to tee up Robin van Persie for a strike inside the area, but the left-footed effort is blocked.
15' NOTHING FOR SUAREZ
Luis Suarez has had little to feed off so far, emphasised just then by being almost immediately blocked off on the edge of the area after collecting the ball from Glen Johnson. Liverpool will nonethless be happy with how much they've contained their opponents so far.
12' MORE NERVOUS DEFENDING
Martin Skrtel doesn't deliver the required headed clearance to deal with a long ball in from Michael Carrick, although Danny Welbeck can't capitalise. Pepe Reina mops up.
9' ERROR BRINGS ACTION
A sloppy kick out from Pepe Reina is intercepted by Ashley Young who finds Robin Van Persie. Liverpool are startled by some quick United passing as they get players towards the visitors' area, but a final deflected finish from Van Persie is tame.
6' YET TO CATCH FIRE
Still very tentative six minutes in, Manchester United doing just about more of the pressing as you would expect. Liverpool look solid at the back, though, with what few balls that have been fed into the box being handled comfortably.
3' CAGEY START
Both sides are feeling each other out in these early stages - a Shinji Kagawa cross deflected off Andre Wisdom into Pepe Reina's arms the only thing close to offensive action.
1' KICK OFF
We're underway at Old Trafford. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are reunited in the centre of defence, while Danny Welbeck makes a surprise start up front for the Red Devils. It's also surprising to see Daniel Sturridge only on the bench for Liverpool.

0' PREVIEW
This may no longer be a battle between the two most competitive clubs in England, but if you can't get excited about any clash between Manchester United and Liverpool then you simply haven't got a pulse. Brendan Rodgers takes his Merseysiders to Old Trafford probably more in hope than expectation on Sunday, considering they are some 21 points adrift of the leaders, but if they cannot win trophies themselves, the next best thing for Liverpool fans is to see their Manchester rivals falter. And if they can play a part in United's demise, then so much the better. The match-up between the North West's two biggest cities, separated by just 33 miles down the M62, is one featuring two clubs with 37 titles between them. To add to the mix, we have the excess baggage accrued in recent years, such as the incident involving Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra in the Premier League game at Anfield in October 2011 that led to the Uruguayan being banned for eight games by the Football Association for racially abusing the United defender. It's something neither club has really totally forgotten and merely adds to the bitterness. Suarez scored a goal against Mansfield in the FA Cup on Sunday helped by a blatant handball, undetected by the referee, which allowed wily old United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, predictably, to take the moral high ground in his pre-match press conference. “I don't know whether he enjoys [being controversial], but it is something we hope we don't suffer from ourselves,” Fergie said. Talk about lighting the red touchpaper and standing well back. Referee Howard Webb could have his hands full today. The game kicks off at 1330GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Each side will have 11 men on the pitch (perhaps not for 90 minutes), but really it boils down to how Liverpool's defence copes with the threat of Robin van Persie and likewise the United rearguard with Luis Suarez. Van Persie's capture in the summer is the reason why United are well on the way to their 20th league title. The Premier League's leading marksman has eight goals in his last eight games. Putting aside the controversy that seems to follow Suarez around wherever he goes, the Uruguayan has been in sensational form on the field, seemingly scoring at will. He has five goals in his last four league games, including two against both Queens Park Rangers and Sunderland. Where would Liverpool be without him? RVP has 16 goals in 1,668 minutes played, or a goal every 104 minutes. Suarez has 15 goals in 1,796 minutes, or a goal every 120 minutes. Combined, they have scored the same number of goals as the entire West Brom and Swansea squads and more than half the clubs in the Premier League.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 62 wins to 53 by Liverpool and 44 games being drawn. At Old Trafford, United have 39 wins to 15 by Liverpool, with a further 19 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season finished in a 2-1 win for United, Wayne Rooney scoring twice early in the second half for the home side and Luis Suarez pulling one back ten minutes from time for the visitors. That result avenged a 2-1 defeat for United at Anfield just a fortnight earlier in the FA Cup fourth round. 2-1 to United was also the score in the reverse fixture between the sides at Anfield on Sep. 23. Despite having Jonjo Shelvey sent off six minutes before the interval, Liverpool took the lead a minute into second half from Steven Gerrard. But Rafael (51 mins) levelled things up and Robin van Persie's penalty nine minutes from time proved to be the winner. Victory today for United would give them their first double in this fixture since the 2007-08 season.
0' FORM GUIDE
United are top of the table, with 52 points from 21 games, seven clear of second-placed Manchester City. They are top of the form table with 16 points from a possible 18 and have won nine of 10 matches at home, the only blemish being a defeat to Tottenham on Sep. 29. A run of five wins in seven games has taken Liverpool into eighth place, seven points off the Champions League places. Their three away wins have come at Norwich, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, none of whom you would term to be Premier League powerhouses.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
United welcome back Nani and Anderson into the squad, who have been sidelined since November and December respectively with hamstring injuries. Wayne Rooney is again ruled out with a knee injury. Daniel Sturridge could make his Liverpool league debut, having impressed in the FA Cup third round win at Mansfield last weekend. The former Chelsea man, though, is more likely to come off the bench as it is hard to see Brendan Rodgers starting with two up front at Old Trafford. Steven Gerrard, Jose Reina and Glen Johnson will all be well rested, having missed the Cup game last weekend. Forward Fabio Borini is back in the squad having been sidelined since mid-October with a broken foot.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Howard Webb may be one of the best and most experienced referees in the solar system, but his selection as match official for this fixture will be under the greatest scrutiny because of what happened the last time he took charge of a match featuring these two sides. Webb controversially awarded a penalty against the visitors and sent off skipper Steven Gerrard in Liverpool's FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford two years ago. After the match Liverpool forward Ryan Babel posted a mocked-up picture of Webb wearing a United shirt on Twitter and became the first professional footballer to be censured for comments made on the social networking site, earning himself a tidy £10,000 fine. Webb's assistants today are Mike Mullarkey and Darren Cann while Jon Moss is the fourth official.
