Aston Villa spurn the chance to collect a morale-boosting away win as West Brom hit back from two goals down to snatch a point in an entertaining West Midlands derby. The visitors were totally in control of the first half from the moment Christian Benteke fired them in front with a rasping right-foot shot from long range on 12 minutes. They added a second just after the half-hour as a sweeping move down the right ended up with Charles N'Zogbia setting up Gabriel Agbonlahor, who cut inside before finding the net with a neat finish. But West Brom were transformed in the second half and pulled one back four minutes after the restart courtesy of Chris Brunt's curling strike. Peter Odemwingie hooked home the leveller seven minutes from time from a right-wing corner after Gareth McAuley had won the initial header.

Charles N'Zogbia looked like the Charles N'Zogbia of old in that first half. It's a shame for Villa that the flashes of brilliance from the former Newcastle and Wigan man are few and far between these days, because he's some footballer when he wants to be.

Let's get one thing straight here, this match is far from over. There were signs of life from West Brom at the end of the first half and you fancy if they were to get an early goal after the restart they could quite easily turn this game on its head.

Aston Villa have a deserved lead at the break thanks to a spectacular effort from Christian Benteke and a second from Gabriel Agbonlahor. The big Belgian Benteke turned his man on the edge of the box before lashing a magnificent angled drive beyond Ben Foster with 16 minutes gone. His strike partner added a second just after the half hour with a neat finish following a fine passing move. It has been a heated Midlands derby at times, but as far as the football goes only one side has been playing so far and they are the men in claret and blue.

N'Zogbia produces two moments of trickery before trying to walk the ball into the goal rather than shoot from a good position. At the other end, Brunt shoots straight at Guzan.

Villa boss Paul Lambert has seen it all over the past few weeks. Three defeats in seven days over Christmas in which his side shipped 15 goals. A humiliating Capital One Cup semi-final reverse at the hands of League Two Bradford and damaging home defeats to fellow relegation rivals Wigan and Southampton. The immediate fate of the Scot could well depend on how his charges fare over the coming seven days. First up on Saturday is the small matter of this West Midlands derby at The Hawthorns in the Premier League. This tricky trip is followed by the return with Bradford City at Villa Park on Tuesday with a place at Wembley still up for grabs and the week is rounded off with an FA Cup trip to a place few people would spend their Friday nights by choice: Millwall. West Brom have exceeded everybody's expectations under new manager Steve Clarke, but they are in danger of undoing all their good work. Last weekend they led Reading by two goals with only eight minutes to go but somehow contrived to take nothing from the game. A straightforward win today will be top of the agenda. 0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Romelu Lukaku has three goals in his last two Premier League outings for West Brom, though on both occasions his side failed to collect a point. The former Anderlecht striker now has nine for the season and is likely to be preferred to Shane Long today despite his strike partner's return to fitness. Lukaku has looked more and more impressive in recent weeks and it must have been a huge relief to Steve Clarke when Chelsea bought Demba Ba, meaning there was no prospect of Lukaku being recalled to Stamford Bridge prematurely from his season-long loan. West Brom will feel a lot more confident of achieving victory today if they have Claudio Yacob back in their line-up after more than a month out with injury. They have a win percentage of 57 per cent in all competitions with the defensive midfielder in their line-up this season, and one of only 25 per cent without him. Villa's leading scorer is Christian Benteke, who has six goals in the Premier League. The Belgium has scored in 11 different matches for his country, former club Genk and Villa since the start of the season and in all of those matches his side has managed at least a draw. The visitors need him to find the target today.

Villa have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 63 wins to 45 by West Brom and 29 games being drawn. At the Hawthorns, the Baggies have 29 wins to 21 by Villa, with a further 18 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season finished in a goalless draw. The two sides also could not be separated in this season's earlier meeting. Shane Long gave West Brom the lead early in the second half at Villa Park, only for Darren Bent to level ten minutes from time. West Brom will give late fitness tests to midfielder Claudio Yacob (hamstring) and strikers Shane Long (dead leg) and Marc-Antoine Fortune (hamstring). Steven Reid will not feature as a precaution having received a kick to the leg he broke against Arsenal last month.
