Chelsea vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' FT: CHELSEA 2 ARSENAL 1
Chelsea strengthen their grip on third place after holding off a spirited second-half fightback from Arsenal to win an entertaining London derby. The home side were totally dominant in the first half, racing into a two-goal lead inside 16 minutes courtesy of a fine finish from Juan Mata and a penalty from Frank Lampard. There was an element of controversy about both goals. Arsenal were adamant that Francis Coquelin was fouled in the build-up to the first and for the second only referee Martin Atkinson will know why he did not show the red card to Wojciech Szczesny for a professional foul when he upended Ramires for the spot-kick. The Gunners could have taken an early lead themselves, but Olivier Giroud screwed a shot wide when clean through. Arsenal simply had to get better in the second half and they took the game to their opponents, pulling one back just before the hour courtesy of a fine finish from Theo Walcott. They pushed hard after that, but left themselves vulnerable on the break and only a goal-line clearance by Thomas Vermaelen prevented substitute Demba Ba from adding a third.
90' ARSENAL PILE ON THE PRESSURE
There is some panic in the Chelsea box, but although Giroud collects the ball in a promising position, his final pass fails to pick out any of his team-mates. A last-ditch tackle from Cahill then denies Walcott. That was excellent defending.
90' FIVE MINUTES OF ADDED TIME
There are chances at both ends. Bertrand sees his shot from distance blocked, while Giroud's long-range effort is straight at Szczesny. Five minutes of added time.
87' CHELSEA BOOKING
Sagna is felled by Cole right on the edge of the area and that is a deserved caution for the Chelsea defender.
86' WIDE BY VERMAELEN
Vermaelen fails to get any curl on his free-kick and it is well wide of the post.
85' LAST CHANCE GOES BEGGING
Wilshere crosses from the right and Giroud's back-header ends up on the roof of the net with Cech beaten. That was so close.
84' OFF THE LINE
Demba Ba gets clear down the left and rounds Szczesny. He looks certain to score but after doing the difficult part his goalbound shot is cleared off the line by Vermaelen.
81' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Cheers all round as Fernando Torres makes way for Demba Ba.
80' VERMAELEN TO THE RESCUE
Wilshere is robbed again in midfield and Chelsea have a two-on-two break, only for Ramires to be denied by a fine tackle from Vermaelen.
77' DISAPPOINTING FROM TORRES
Wilshere is robbed deep in his own half by Mata but, surprise, surprise, the finish from Torres is tame and lacks conviction.
76' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Arsenal make their second change, with Andrey Arshavin replacing Abou Diaby.
75' STILL A WAY BACK
Despite their dominance, you still fancy Arsenal's best way back into this game is on the break when Walcott can get behind Chelsea's static backline.
74' RAMIRES DENIED
A Chelsea corner is cleared to Ramires some 30 yards out and his shot is kept out by Szczesny, who makes a diving save by his left-hand post.
72' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Rafa tries to strengthen his side by bringing on Ryan Bertrand for Oscar.
71' POOR TOUCH BY TORRES
Torres shows great pace to burst past his man, only to produce a first touch that would not look out of place in a Sunday League match and the chance is gone.
68' GIBBS WASTES GOOD POSITION
Gibbs twists and turns inside the Chelsea area but pulls back a cross to nobody in particular.
67' CHELSEA BOOKING
Arsenal are dominating possession here and Walcott is fouled by Cole on the edge of the Chelsea box. Mata is booked for kicking the ball away.
64' QUIZ ANSWER
The three players sent off in the 2007 Carling Cup final between these sides were Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor of Arsenal and Chelsea's John Obi Mikel.
61' WALCOTT SHOOTS WIDE
Now Arsenal are on fire and Walcott cuts in off the right flank, only to scuff a left-foot shot well wide of the target.
60' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Aaron Ramsey has come on for the injured Francis Coquelin. Theo Walcott is now limping as well.
59' GOAL DETAILS
It's just what Arsenal needed. Wilshere won the ball in midfield and fed Cazorla, who slid a ball inside the full-back for Walcott and he steered his shot past Cech into the net.
58' GOAL: CHELSEA 2 ARSENAL 1
Theo Walcott pulls one back for Arsenal.
57' TAME HEADER BY GIROUD
Arsenal break down the left and Gibbs lofts a superb cross to the centre where Giroud is just unable to get enough purchase on his header.
55' IT'S QUIZ TIME
Name the three players sent off when Chelsea beat Arsenal in the 2007 Carling Cup final. Answer in a few minutes.
53' GIROUD NEEDS TREATMENT
Giroud goes down after getting a knee in the back from Ramires. He will be fine after treatment.
50' EASY AGAIN FOR CECH
Back come Arsenal again. Walcott latches on to a pass from Wilshere, but the angle is against him and his shot is comfortably dealt with by Cech.
48' GREAT CHANCE FOR MERTESACKER
Arsenal have a glorious chance to get one back straight away. Ivanovic heads Wilshere's free-kick right at the feet of Mertesacker, who can only scoop a weak shot straight at Cech from 14 yards.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Arsenal get the second half under way.
45' HT: CHELSEA 2 ARSENAL 0
Chelsea lead at the break after a thoroughly dominant first half display against a very ordinary Arsenal side. The Gunners had a glorious chance to take the lead in the early going when Olivier Giroud fired wide after being put clean through. But they paid the price almost immediately as Juan Mata gave the Blues a sixth-minute lead, firing home after an excellent crossfield pass by Cesar Azpilicueta. Chelsea doubled their lead ten minutes later, Ramires being felled by Wojciech Szczesny after trying to round the goalkeeper and Frank Lampard converting the penalty. The only good news for the Gunners is that they could have easily been down to ten men, but referee Martin Atkinson took a lenient view of Szcezesny's challenge and only produced a yellow card. Southampton were two goals down on this ground in midweek and came back to snatch a point, so there is still some hope for the visitors.
45' TORRES SLICES OVER
Chelsea have a chance to add a third, but Torres slices over after Arsenal are unable to clear a free-kick from the left.
44' SAGNA CLEARS THE DANGER
Azpilicueta plays a neat one-two with Hazard down the right before delivering a cross, but Sagna is alert to the danger and heads away.
41' SLOW STARTERS
If you're one for your stats, entering this match Arsenal had conceded 58 per cent of their goals in the first half, more than any other side in the Premier League.
37' RAMIRES SHOOTS WIDE
Ramires skips past his man but with the goal at his mercy slices a shot into the crowd.
36' COLE IN THE FIRING LINE
Ashley Cole is getting some fearful stick from the Arsenal supporters, but it is easier to take when you're two goals to the good.
33' GIROUD BULLIED OFF THE BALL
Giroud almost gets in behind the Arsenal defence but is muscled off the ball by Ivanovic, the occasionally suspect Chelsea defender showing some of his better qualities.
30' SLIP BY IVANOVIC
Chelsea are toying with Arsenal here. The visitors' only hope seems to be a defensive blunder by Ivanovic and right on cue the Serbian almost obliges.
28' DRAW NOT GOOD ENOUGH
And remember, even a draw at Stamford Bridge is not good enough these days, it got Southampton manager Nigel Adkins the sack in midweek.
25' ARSENAL NEED A RESPONSE
If Arsenal get something from this match from here it will be a miracle. They are chasing shadows at the moment.
23' FINAL PASS GOES ASTRAY
Chelsea break again from a woeful Arsenal corner but for once Mata is unable to find the killer pass.
20' SELFISH SHOT FROM HAZARD
Mata drops a superb first-time pass over the top of the Arsenal defence for Hazard, who escapes the attentions of his marker with a clever backheel before trying a rather selfish shot with team-mates better placed. Szczesny saves easily.
18' LUCKY TO HAVE 11 MEN
Szczesny can count himself very lucky that he was not shown a red card and only cautioned for upending Ramires. It was a clear goalscoring opportunity in my book.
16' GOAL: CHELSEA 2 ARSENAL 0
Frank Lampard scores from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
15' PENALTY CHELSEA
Chelsea have a penalty as Szczesny fells Ramires after a dreadful giveaway by Diaby.
14' BOOS FOR TORRES
Mata sends Torres away down the left, but the Spaniard hits his cross way too long. Even discounting the “what a waste of money” chants from the visiting supporters, there are also quite a few boos for the Chelsea man from his own fans.
12' HAZARD CAUSING PROBLEMS
Hazard goes on a wonderful jinking run down the inside-right channel and tries an audacious near-post shot that Szczesny beats away. Lampard hits the post from the corner, but the flag was up for offside.
10' GREAT SAVE FROM CECH
Back come Arsenal. Cazorla's right-foot shot from 25 yards is tipped round the post by Cech.
9' DEFENCE AT FAULT AGAIN
Arsene Wenger will be raging over not being awarded a free-kick, but he will be equally furious about how easily his team's suspect defence were picked apart.
8' GOAL DETAILS
Arsenal were furious that a foul was not awarded in favour of Coquelin, Chelsea played on and Azpilicueta found Mata with a diagonal ball. The Spaniard finished expertly with his left foot.
6' GOAL: CHELSEA 1 ARSENAL 0
Juan Mata gives Chelsea the lead.
5' GLORIOUS CHANCE WASTED
Walcott slips a delightful ball through for Giroud, who only has the goalkeeper to beat from 14 yards, but drags his shot wide of the far post.
3' REFEREE IN LENIENT MOOD
Torres is tripped by a quite cynical tackle by Mertesacker, who is lucky not to collect an early yellow card. Ivanovic heads over from the resulting free-kick.
2' SNOW PLACE LIKE HOME
It's snowing quite heavily at the Bridge, but it is not laying on the pitch and there is no doubt we will get a game in today. Lampard shoots from distance, but that one is well wide.
1' HERE WE GO
Chelsea kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' TEAM NEWS
Rafa Benitez makes two changes to the Chelsea side that drew with Southampton, replacing David Luiz with Branislav Ivanovic and more significantly giving Fernando Torres the start up front ahead of Demba Ba. There is no place for John Terry. Arsenal name the same side that beat Swansea in the FA Cup in midweek, so Per Mertesacker keeps his place in defence ahead of Laurent Koscielny, who is now free of suspension. Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain again miss out through illness.
0' PREVIEW
Two big clubs whose fans expect much more, two London giants who have seen their claims to the title eroded in recent years by the dominance of Manchester, two managers who need a big performance from their side today: no quarter will be asked or given as Chelsea entertain Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. The boos and abuse that echoed around the ground when Southampton came back to snatch a draw at the Bridge on Wednesday night said everything about what Blues supporters think of Rafa Benitez. Their anger was further compounded by the news that the world's most highly-rated coach, Pep Guardiola, had spurned the advances of owner Roman Abramovich and instead opted for the much more stable environment of Bayern Munich. Arsene Wenger remembers the days when he was considered among the game's pre-eminent tacticians, but times have changed somewhat. Starved of success, Gunners fans have had precious little to cheer, but the team could give their support a real shot in the arm with a win today, and prove they are capable of going to one of their big rivals and standing toe to toe. Their performance at Manchester United back in November was abject and simply not good enough. Win, lose, or draw they simply have to play with more belief than that day. This proved to be one of the games of the season last time when Arsenal roared back from trailing 2-1 at half-time to register a stunning 5-3 victory. Just as today, there was even more significance than normal to the match, because Arsenal entered it seventh in the table and on their worst away run during the Premier League era. Wenger was under real pressure. You might argue nothing much has changed, only that perhaps the manager in the other dugout needs the three points even more than the Frenchman. Today's game kicks off at 1330GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
With two teams full of attacking intent it wouldn't be a surprise if this was an open, attacking match with a few goals, despite both clubs' impressive defensive records. It will be interesting to see who Rafael Benitez plumps for up front. New signing Demba Ba was on the scoresheet against Southampton, taking his total for the season to 14, 13 of them for Newcastle. And when the Senegalese was removed for Fernando Torres in the second half there were boos all round from the crowd. Eden Hazard has scored a couple of spectacular goals in Chelsea's last two matches, but the man Arsenal should fear most if Torres plays instead of Ba is Juan Mata, who likes playing against the Gunners. The visitors may well have Theo Walcott leading the line, the England man having given the club a boost by finally committing to a new long-term contract during the week. He has eight goals and seven assists for Arsene Wenger's men, the same returns as Santi Cazorla. Unfortunately with both you feel they turn it on against the lesser sides but go missing somewhat against the big clubs. This afternoon would be the perfect time to silence the doubters.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Arsenal have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 61 wins to 45 by Chelsea and 45 games being drawn. At Stamford Bridge it could not be closer, with 25 wins apiece and another 25 meetings ending up all square. As already mentioned, the Gunners won the corresponding match last season 5-3. Goals from Frank Lampard and John Terry had the Blues 2-1 up at the break. But Andre Santos and Theo Walcott both struck soon after the break to add to Robin van Persie's first-half strike to put the visitors in front. Juan Mata levelled ten minutes from time, only for van Persie to go on and complete his hat-trick with strikes on 85 and 90 minutes. Chelsea are looking to do the double this season, having won 2-1 at the Emirates on Sep. 29 with goals from Fernando Torres and Juan Mata, Gervinho replying for the home side. Arsenal have lost on three of their last five trips to Stamford Bridge, but only four times in the last 16.
0' FORM GUIDE
Chelsea sit in third place, with 42 points from 22 games. Arsenal are currently sixth, eight points behind but they play their game in hand, at home to West Ham, this coming midweek. Chelsea have been beaten twice at home in 11 matches, by Manchester United and QPR. Only Manchester City have conceded fewer than their ten goals at home. They were held at home by Southampton last time out, but have won five of their last seven. Arsenal have been beaten twice in 11 away matches, by Norwich and Manchester United. Since that defeat at Old Trafford they have won two and drawn three away from home. They have the stingiest defence away from home in the Premier League, having conceded just nine goals.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Chelsea captain John Terry came on as a substitute against Stoke last weekend following a lengthy lay-off due to a knee injury and is in line for his first start since November. John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses are away representing Nigeria at the African Nations Cup while Oriol Romeu (knee) remains sidelined. For Arsenal, defender Laurent Koscielny returns after serving a one-match ban for his sending off against Manchester City, but midfielders Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky (both calf) remain sidelined. Not that he would likely have featured much anyway, but Gervinho is away at the African Nations Cup with Ivory Coast.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Martin Atkinson, who has been a member of the Premier League's elite group of referees since 2005 and who became a FIFA referee a year later. The West Yorkshire-based official showed nine red cards last season, by far the most of any Premier League referee. Atkinson has been much more restrained this time around with Newcastle's Cheick Tiote at the Stadium of Light in the Wear-Tyne derby his only sending off to date in 16 Premier League outings. Atkinson's assistants today are Stephen Child and Charles Breakspear, while Kevin Friend is the fourth official.
