Minute Commentary
90' FINAL SCORE: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1, MANCHESTER UNITED 1
Tottenham Hotspur snatched a draw in injury time at the end of the game after an enthralling second half played in driving snow at White Hart Lane. Spurs had put United under continuous pressure in the final half-hour but it looked like United would hold onto a lead given to them Robin Van Persie in the 25th minute with a header from a Tom Cleverley cross. Several fine saves from David De Gea had kept them in it, but the Spaniard was unable to clear his lines in the second of three added-on minutes and Clint Dempsey stabbed the ball into the net to maintain Andre Villas-Boas' unbeaten record against the league leader as Tottenham boss. A bitty first half full of poor passing was enlivened only by the clinical Van Persie's 18th Premier League goal of the season. The game opened up from then on, and Bale and Lennon both brought saves from De Gea before half-time. After the break, Tottenham continued to probe and Dempsey and Defoe both should have scored for the hosts, only for tremendous last-ditch tackles to deny them. The introduction of Wayne Rooney with half-an-hour to play lit the touch paper and the two sides went at it hammer and tongs in an engrossing finish. First the England striker was denied a clear penalty when Steven Caulker clipped him as he entered the area, but it was the home side who carried most of the threat, despite coming up against an inspired United back-line. Dempsey, Moussa Dembele and Defoe all had chances it score and it looked like United's day until De Gea paid for failing to clear the danger. United open up a five-point gap at the top, but Sir Alex Ferguson will see this as two points dropped, whilst Tottenham, in fourth, move four clear of Everton and stretch their unbeaten run to eight matches.
90' THAT'S IT
The final whistle goes. Spurs snatch a draw with almost the final kick of the game.
90' 1-1
There it is! Finally Tottenham find a way through. David De Gea fails to punch a cross clear, Aaron Lennon plays it back in and there was Clint Dempsey to stab home. After relentess pressure United have conceded at the death.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Clint Dempsey equalises!!!
89' WINDING DOWN
Sir Alex Ferguson's nerves are jangling on the sidelines as they give the ball away poorly with only a few minutes to go now. Lennon has a shot charged down on the edge of the area as the fourth official signals three minutes of added time.
87' REARGUARD ACTION
This time it's Bale blasting a shot ambitiously as the snow continues to fall heavily. United play it around in an advanced position but Spurs retrieve the situation and a succession of great United tackles come in to hold them up. Never has a game with defenses on top been so enthralling.
84' SNOW PLACE LIKE HOME
Moussa Dembele slashes a shot very wide in a good position with plenty of support and then Kyle Walker remounts the home quest for an equaliser which they probably deserve on the current balance of play. Phil Jones is distinguishing himself in front of the United defence to repel the Spurs attack.
81' TRADING BLOWS
Tom Huddlestone arrives in place of Scott Parker for Spurs as United line up a corner. It has been end-to-end in the last ten minutes with some heroic defending from either side. Aaron Lennon is worrying the visitors but Van Persie and Rooney are doing likewise at the other end.
78' CHANCES A GO GO
A gilt-edged chance for Van Persie from a lovely ball by Phil Jones which the Dutchman steers wide. Then Lennon surges forward to feed Defoe and it's Ferdinand with the goal-saving challenge. United come again in fine style and the game is purring now.
75' ANDRE VILLAS-SNOWBALLS
Andre Villas-Boas looks nervous and a little clueless on the bench as Bale topples comically over the hoardings on the side of the pitch and then Van Persie becomes the second United player to have snowballs thrown at him from the crowd. It's Antonio Valencia for Tom Cleverley now for United. Spurs, alas, are desperately short of game-changing options on the sidelines.
72' THAT'S THE WAYNE TO DO IT
Wayne Rooney has come on like a raging bull, evidently not appreciating an hour of freezing on the bench. He is everywhere and has rallied his sluggish side into action, though they're still on the back-foot with Gareth Bale again shooting from distance, off-target this time.
70' BETTER BY FAR
Bale forays forward but United get it back and break. It's a much better second half, open, honest and attacking. Nemanja Vidic heads away a dangerous cross with Jermain Defoe hovering on the penalty spot.
67' LUCKY SPURS
So Spurs have escaped with that one, and straight away Clint Dempsey forces David De Gea to block an angled shot at close-range before Danny Welbeck meets a whipped ball at the back-post but he can't quite steer it goalwards.
64' BIG SHOUT
Immediately Rooney is battling with Caulker in the area and he goes down to appeals from the travelling fans. Assou-Ekotto replaces Kyle Naughton at left-back. Replays show Rooney had a good case for a penalty there.
62' ROONEY ON
Bale once again pings a fine ball across the six-yard box which nobody connects with. Here he comes, it's Rooney for an ineffective Shinji Kagawa and it looks like we'll be seeing Benoit Assou-Ekotto for Spurs.
59' A RIGHT OLD TUSSLE
The battle between Michael Carrick and Scott Parker has been a torrid one throughout the game and they continue to tussle in earnest. Aaron Lennon wins a corner for the home side with Carrick again on the spot to hold up the pacy winger. Wayne Rooney looks anxiously on. Will we see him come on to add some bite up front for the visitors?
56' UNITED THEY STAND
A long ball down the middle by Rio Ferdinand can't find Van Persie and Lloris gathers. A workman-like performance from United is doing its job for Sir Alex Ferguson. He has the hex over Spurs since the inception of the Premier League and you can see why.
53' TOTTENHAM ON TOP
Tottenham are dominating possession at the start of this second period with Bale in the ascendency. He floats a cross deep for Lennon and then Scott Parker is brought down on the edge of the area. Spurs must capitalise on this passage of play.
51' CLINT TO THE AREA
The snow continues to fall here in North London but it's not really impeding the players. Oh, Clint Dempsey, one-on-one with De Gea after a good pass from Dembele but the American is stopped at point-blank range by the Spaniard. What a chance for Tottenham!
48' SPURS PUSH
Danny Welbeck threatens early on for United before Gareth Bale wins a couple of corners for Spurs, the second of which is repelled away from Steven Caulker in a dangerous spot. Then Bale belts an extravagant effort narrowly over for the home side.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
We're back underway at the Lane. The sides are unchanged.
45' UNITED LEAD AT THE BREAK
At least one man hasn't frozen up in the cold out there. Whilst you'd think they were playing on an ice rink given the amount of mis-placed passes on display, conditions actually aren't that bad, so why the game has been so under-par is anybody's guess. You only need to give Robin Van Persie half a chance at the moment though, and he glanced in a Tom Cleverley cross after 25 minutes following one of the few fluent moves of the game so far. Spurs have come to life to some extent since then, but you sense they'll need to come out firing if United are not to capitalise on some dominant possession on the break. Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale have both tested an alert David De Gea but the league leaders have otherwise held firm. There's a good chance we'll see some fire-power off the bench for them when we resume shortly...
45' HALF-TIME
Two Manchester United corners end the first half, neither of which threaten the largely untroubled Hugo Lloris. Then Dembele and Dempsey respond and win a corner themselves on the break, but it's wasted and there goes the whistle.
45' OPENING UP
United break and suddenly Jones is in the opposite penalty area but Spurs sweep up. Signs of an open game are emerging as Danny Welbeck probes in the area but can't find a pass. Then Spurs loft it in towards Steven Caulker who can't connect. It has been a story of half-chances as we enter one minute of stoppage time.
42' HOME PRESSURE
Some good meaningful pressure from Spurs late in the half as a corner falls to Bale and he strikes one. It deflects off Phil Jones and De Gea has to palm the ball away. That was as close as the hosts have come.
39' TACTICS TIME
Kyle Naughton lofts in a free-kick which Vidic clears easily. The game has resumed its stalemate as we approach half-time with United content to repel Spurs on halfway. Andre Villas-Boas will have to find some words of wisdom at the the break because he is being tactically out-manoeuvered right now.
34' BREAK IT DOWN
Dawson puts the ball out for a United corner after Evra and Cleverley threaten down the wing and Van Persie plays it short but it's wasted. After Spurs had looked comfortable, United have picked them off and Sir Alex Ferguson's men now look happy to play on the break to good effect.
30' MOMENTUM SHIFT
So a drab game can surely only get better following United's lead thanks to the Premier League's most clinical marksman. Here come Spurs with Walker and Lennon but United break only to give it away. Surely the game will open up as Tottenham try to respond.
26' RED RED ROBIN
You guessed it. ROBIN VAN PERSIE makes something out of nothing for the visitors. One great move and that was all he needed, nodding in from a Cleverley cross after fine work from Carrick and Welbeck down the wing.
25' GOOOAAALLL!!!
1-0 United! Guess who...
25' STALEMATE
Finally we see Bale on the ball and he whips in a cross that Michael Dawson was arriving at the back-post to meet but it's out for a corner. Rio Ferdinand nods it down and it's hacked clear. That was a fine delivery from the Welshman, who has been snuffed out really well so far. Both teams seem to have lined up to stiffle one another and that is to the detriment of the quality of the play in this opening quarter of the game.
20' NOTHING TO CHOOSE
So a combative and uninspired start to this game. Gareth Bale has yet to see much of the ball and we look set for a tight, tactical battle. Luckily, conditions look okay for football. Now Rafael looks long for Van Persie who is offside. Long errant balls have been a feature of United so far.
15' CHANCES FINALLY
Now Robin Van Persie gets a chance in the area but can't guide it towards Hugo Lloris' goal before Aaron Lennon forces David De Gea into a flying save as the game comes to life. De Gea parried that back into play but Jermain Defoe could only steer the rebound back into the goalkeeper's arms.
13' PARKER SHOOTS
Kyle Walker advances down the right and Patrice Evra clips him cynically before Scott Parker curls an ambitious shot just round the post. That was the first meaningful effort on goal between two very evenly-matched and arguably a little scrappy sides so far.
8' SLOW START
A slow start sees some ambitious long-ball play thwarted at either end as the two sides feel one another out. The midfield tussle starts in earnest between Cleverley and Parker.
4' FORMATIONS
United have started with Shinji Kagawa playing quite centrally and Tom Cleverley will try to push out wide. A lot rides on the fitness of recently returned Scott Parker for Spurs, in partnership with Moussa Dembele in the middle.
1' HERE WE SNOW
United in red and Spurs in a slightly inconvenient white, referee Chris Foy gets the game underway. Spurs will close the gap to two points on Chelsea, who beat Arsenal earlier, if they get the three points, whilst United will restore their seven point lead at the top with a win.
0' THE TEAMS
Strapping the snow shoes on for the home side today will be Lloris; Walker, Caulker, Dawson, Naughton; Lennon, Dembele, Parker, Bale; Dempsey, Defoe. As expected, as strong a side as Andre Villas-Boas could have picked in light of injuries to Sandro and Emmanuel Adebayor's enviable trip to Africa. Kyle Naughton is preferred to substitute Benoit Assou-Ekotto at left-back.They'll take on United's 4-3-3 formation which are De Gea; Rafael, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra; Jones, Cleverley, Carrick; Kagawa, Van Persie, Welbeck. Perhaps a surprise that Shinji Kagawa has got the nod ahead of Wayne Rooney who will start from the bench. It's nice to see Phil Jones start a league game for the first time in a while and he will hope to form a solid defensive three ahead of the traditionally solid Vidic-Ferdinand partnership who are perhaps not as dependable as they once were. A fascinating encounter in prospect as long as the weather doesn't mar proceedings too much. Join us shortly for full live commentary...
0' WELCOME ALONG
Good afternoon and welcome to Lapland or...er...White Hart Lane. The snow is coming down pretty heavily, but Mike Riley and his F.A. counterparts have been out on the pitch in the last hour and the game has just been announced as going ahead. Tottenham start with three huskies, a polar bear, five eskimos and Jermain Defoe up front whilst United field an unchanged side from the eleven that recently brought the the British cross-country skiing championship back to Manchester.
0' PREVIEW: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR VS. MANCHESTER UNITED
Andre Villas-Boas comes into his 23rd game as Spurs coach with a record of twelve wins, four draws and six losses. When Sir Alex Ferguson's United side saw off Oxford 2-0 on the 4th April 1987 in his 23rd match in charge, he brought his record to ten, seven and six since taking over a talented but lazy bunch who enjoyed a trip to the pub and were second-bottom of the division. Robson and co. loped their way to mid-table safety, but it was a full six years and at least two other mediocre league finishes before the Red Devils lifted the title. I'm not exactly sure what my point is, and if Sod's Law now results in Villas-Boas guiding Tottenham to the most dominant reign over English football ever seen then glory be. But with Nigel Adkins out of work once again after such success at Southampton, Harry Redknapp masterminding yet another devious fight against relegation at another different club and former-Chelsea managers littering the capital like abandoned blue bikes, one thing remains reassuringly constant in the Premier League...Manchester United are cruising to another title.
0' TOUGH CALL FOR AVB
Spurs have a 100% record against United under Villas-Boas, thanks to their 3-2 victory at Old Trafford in September. An Evans own-goal, Bale and a Dempsey strike sandwiched in between efforts by Nani and Kagawa were enough for them as even Fergie Time couldn't conjure up anything from an onslaught in the final half-hour. History is not on the hosts' side though. That was Tottenham's first victory at Old Trafford since 1989, and they last beat United at White Hart Lane in 2001 when Giggs and Scholes et al. were felled by two goals from the mighty boot of Willem Korsten. Injuries have been kind to Villas-Boas since his arrival, though one in and one out, in the shape of Sandro promptly ruling himself out for the rest of the season upon Scott Parker's return, is inconvenient. Emmanuel Adebayor is also away at the African Cup Of Nations.
0' FERGIE TIME
Manchester City have suddenly found their stride once more, and will not have to worry about European involvement as United shortly will, but the fixture list looks tailor-made for another trademark new year acceleration from Sir Alex's men so that, by the time they meet their city rivals in April, it may only be a formality. Today's encounter with Spurs is the toughest league game they have until that one, and their top-heavy approach to winning games of late surely spells goals. Indeed they've managed twelve in their last four league games. Jonny Evans is still struggling so we will likely see Ferdinand and Vidic at centre-back, whilst Nani returns, though Ashley Young and Darren Fletcher are doubtful.
