Arsenal vs. Liverpool
Minute Commentary
90' FT: ARSENAL 2 LIVERPOOL 2
Arsenal hit back from two goals down to earn a draw after a stirring fightback at the Emirates. Liverpool controlled the first hour from the moment they took an early lead when a comedy of errors from the home defence ended with Luis Suarez clipping the ball home via a deflection off Per Mertesacker. Arsenal had their chances, with Theo Walcott seeing two efforts well saved, but the visitors always looked capable of adding to their tally. Arsenal were much improved after the break and it must have been a crushing blow when Jordan Henderson held off Andre Santos to prod home a second. But the Gunners showed admirable fighting spirit to haul themselves level with two goals in three minutes. The first on 64 minutes came from Olivier Giroud, his fifth in three games, the Frenchman being left unmarked at a Jack Wilshere free-kick to pick his spot with a header. The leveller was spectacular, Giroud this time teeing up Walcott, who produced an angled drive from the tightest of angles into the opposite corner. It was hit with such venom that Reina could only watch leaden-footed. Arsenal should have won it, but Giroud fluffed a gilt-edged chance in the final minute of normal time.
90' LIVERPOOL ALMOST SNATCH IT
Suarez almost snatches a stunning winner for Liverpool, but his angled drive is somehow kept out by the right arm of Szczesny. Boy, was that close!
90' ARSENAL BOOKING
Mertesacker's clumsy tackle earns him a third caution of the season. Four minutes of added time.
89' RARE RAID FROM LIVERPOOL
Downing slides a pass across the edge of the area for Suarez, who lifts a first-time shot comfortably over the bar.
88' BAD MISS FROM GIROUD
Arsenal carve open the Liverpool defence but Giroud fails to bury a chance only six yards out after Podolski had found him in space. What a miss!
86' ARSENAL BOOKING
Giroud is booked for diving over a tackle from Agger on the edge of the area trying to win a free-kick.
85' GIROUD DENIED AGAIN
Arsenal surge forward again. Walcott finds Giroud and his left-foot shot from a central position 25 yards out is palmed wide by Reina. The France forward heads over from the ensuing corner.
83' GUNNERS THREATEN ON THE BREAK
Arsenal break at pace from a Liverpool corner and Cazorla's effort from wide on the left is neither shot nor cross and fizzes past the far post.
80' MERTESACKER HEADS OVER
Podolski fires in a free-kick from wide on the left towards the near post and Mertesacker flicks a header just over the crossbar. The visitors now look vulnerable at the back having been watertight for the first hour.
78' LIVERPOOL HANGING ON
If you offered Liverpool a draw right now, they would take it. Only one team looks capable of winning from here and they are not wearing black.
74' LIVERPOOL BOOKING
A late challenge from Gerrard on Mertesacker earns the Liverpool captain his third caution of the season.
73' HOW THEY LINE UP
Enrique is going to play in front of Johnson down the left, with Suarez moving across to be the lone frontman.
71' WALCOTT INCHES AWAY
Arsenal go close to a third, with Walcott's left-foot curler inches wide of the post. Jose Enrique replaces Sturridge for Liverpool.
69' GOAL DETAILS
It's a stunning 11th of the season from the England winger. Cazorla played the ball into the feet of Giroud and he cushioned a deft pass into Walcott. The angle was very tight, but he swung his right foot at the ball and it ended up in the opposite corner. Podolski shoots over as Liverpool are reeling.
67' GOAL: ARSENAL 2 LIVERPOOL 2
Theo Walcott scores a blinder and Arsenal are level.
66' GOAL DETAILS
It's a good header from the Frenchman, but poor defending from Liverpool. Daniel Agger was caught out by Wilshere's free-kick and Giroud was left with space and time to steer his effort into the corner.
65' GOAL: ARSENAL 1 LIVERPOOL 2
Olivier Giroud pulls one back for Arsenal.
63' JUST WIDE FROM PODOLSKI
Podolski swaps passes with Giroud and slices an instant shot just wide of the left-hand upright.
62' GOAL DETAILS
Henderson collected a pass from Sturridge and held off the attentions of Andre Santos down the inside-right channel. He was a trifle lucky that the ball ricocheted kindly back into his path, but made no mistake with the finish. Arsenal will be sick at being floored by that sucker punch.
60' GOAL: ARSENAL 0 LIVERPOOL 2
Jordan Henderson doubles Liverpool's lead.
59' CARRAGHER WINDED
A seemingly fair tackle by Lucas on Wilshere earns Arsenal a fortuitous free-kick 30 yards from goal. Podolski tees up the ball and smashes his first shot into the wall and the second into the mid-riff of Jamie Carragher who is badly winded.
56' ATTACK AGAINST DEFENCE
This is much better from Arsenal, they are pinning the visitors back in their own half.
55' WALCOTT GOES CLOSE
Walcott goes close to levelling for Arsenal, sneaking in on the blind side of the snoozing Johnson to meet a cross from Podolski but heading over the bar.
53' NOW ARSENAL WANT A PENALTY
Some neat interplay by Arsenal ends with Podolski taking a tumble in the box. The appeals for a penalty are desperate rather than convincing and it's certainly not a spot-kick.
51' PENALTY CLAIMS
Sturridge claims a penalty for handball by Vermaelen, but Mr Friend is not interested, so the Liverpool striker plays on but scuffs his shot wide. Arsenal's captain can count himself lucky there, the ball seemed to touch both his arms.
49' SHORT OF OPTIONS
Looking at Arsene Wenger's bench, he's pretty short of attacking options. Neither Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain nor Tomas Rosicky have exactly been pulling up any trees this season.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Liverpool get the second half under way.
45' HT: ARSENAL 0 LIVERPOOL 1
Liverpool lead at the break thanks to that early goal from Luis Suarez, his 17th of the season in the Premier League. From a neutral's point of view it was just the start we were hoping for and it's been pretty breathless stuff ever since. Bacary Sagna, Thomas Vermaelen and Aaron Ramsey were all at fault to some degree for the Reds' opener, which ended with Daniel Sturridge seeing his initial shot blocked and Suarez slotting home the loose ball, helped by a deflection off Per Mertesacker. Arsenal have been purposeful going forward and Theo Walcott has forced Pepe Reina into two excellent saves. But they have been a bag of nerves at the back, with Wojciech Szczesny almost gifting Daniel Sturridge a goal and Daniel Agger seeing a header cleared off the line by Lukas Podolski after the goalkeeper had flapped at the corner from Steven Gerrard. The home crowd are far from happy at seeing their favourites once more trailing against one of the sides who will be battling them for a Champions League spot come the end of the season.
45' GOLDEN CHANCE FOR HENDERSON
Downing's pass down the left flank finds Henderson in space with Szczesny marooned off his line. The former Sunderland man tries a chip into an empty goal from out wide, but the ball drops the wrong side of the bar.
41' GIROUD HEADER SAVED
Wilshere leads an Arsenal attack and although the move initially breaks down, Giroud eventually gets in a powerful header which is on target but too close to Reina.
38' FLAG UP FOR OFFSIDE
Szczesny makes a diving save to keep out Agger's header from a Gerrard free-kick, but the flag was up for offside anyway.
35' ARSENAL SUBSTITUTION
Gibbs continued on after treatment, but he has not been moving too freely and makes way for Andre Santos.
33' GIBBS NEEDS TREATMENT
Kieran Gibbs has pulled up lame. It looks as though he has a problem with his left hip.
30' WIDE FROM SUAREZ
Liverpool create yet another chance. Henderson dinks the ball through to Suarez, but the angle is against him and he screws his effort wide.
28' CLEARED OFF THE LINE
Mertesacker carelessly gifts the ball to Henderson deep in the Arsenal half. He puts Suarez in on the overlap, but Vermaelen is alert to the danger. From the corner, Agger sees his towering header cleared off the line by Podolski.
26' ARSENAL BOOKING
Cazorla is shown the first yellow card of the game for a cynical trip on Suarez.
24' SAVING TACKLE FROM GERRARD
Arsenal break with purpose again. Cazorla finds Podolski on the left. The German looks to pick out Giroud in the centre, but Gerrard makes an excellent clearing tackle at full stretch.
21' KEEP SUAREZ UP TOP
The one negative about playing Sturridge and Suarez in the same side is that the Uruguayan has to track the opposing full-back all the way back into his own penalty area. He's too good going forward to waste on defensive duties.
18' FINE SAVE FROM REINA
Gerrard slips on the edge of his own box, but Giroud's sliced first-time effort deflects over the bar. Vermaelen then sees his shot blocked by Agger and Reina makes a diving save to deny Walcott.
16' JOHNSON IN THE WARS
Glen Johnson needs treatment after a clash of heads with Bacary Sagna. He looks a little groggy, but will play on.
13' GIROUD SHOOTS WIDE
Some lovely football from Arsenal creates a great chance. Cazorla feeds Podolski on the left and he crosses for Giroud. The first-time shot goes wide.
12' ESCAPE FOR SZCZESNY
What is Szczesny doing? Near his own line, he tries to backheel the ball past Sturridge and is so lucky not to gift the Liverpool man tap-in from two yards.
10' BRILLIANT FROM SUAREZ
Suarez plays a quite brilliant first-time ball to put Sturridge in the clear, but the former Chelsea man drags his shot wide of the far post.
9' GOAL DEFLECTED OFF MERTESACKER
Having looked at that Suarez goal again on the replay, it was even scrappier than we first thought, taking a deflection off Mertesacker which left Szczesny flat-footed. No doubt it was the Uruguayan's goal, though.
8' THREE MEN UP FRONT
Liverpool, all in black tonight, are deploying a three-man forward line, with Suarez on the left, Downing on the right and Sturridge through the centre.
7' WALCOTT DENIED
Back come Arsenal and Reina beats away a powerful drive from Walcott at his near post. What a cracking start!
6' GOAL DETAILS
What a scrappy goal. Sagna slipped, Johnson crossed, Vermaelen missed it, Sturridge was unable to force it home, Ramsey then failed to clear and Suarez put the ball in the net.
5' GOAL: ARSENAL 0 LIVERPOOL 1
Luis Suarez gives Liverpool the lead.
4' FIRST CORNER FOR LIVERPOOL
Sturridge wins Liverpool the first corner of the game. Gerrard delivers, but Giroud heads clear.
3' NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
In case you missed it earlier, Liverpool completed the £8.5m signing of Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho from Italian side Inter Milan earlier this afternoon. “He's a very exciting young player,” Reds boss Brendan Rodgers said. “For a young player he's actually got a lot of experience and has played at the highest level.”
1' HERE WE GO
Arsenal kick off, attacking the goal to our right.

0' PREVIEW
Liverpool travel to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night looking to get Sunday's shock FA Cup exit at Oldham out of their system. Brendan Rodgers' side were humbled by the League One outfit and double disappoint was to follow as they learnt they would have met Merseyside rivals Everton in the fifth round. Trips to Arsenal tonight and Manchester City on Sunday will show just how realistic Liverpool's hopes of sneaking into that last Champions League position come the end of the season really are. The former Swansea boss, for his part, was not mincing his words this week and lambasted the club's youngsters for their feeble display at Boundary Park. “If they are bright enough, they will learn from a role model like Steven Gerrard and hopefully be here for a long time,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “But if they don't they might find themselves playing in League One later on in their life and regretting the opportunity they missed at looking at a world class player every day and learning. Oldham was a rude awakening for some of our young players. Some have not had that experience of going to the Championship or League One on loan and doing the dirty work.” Arsenal for their part have got to show they can consistently beat the bigger sides. Bullying the likes of Newcastle and West Ham is all well and good, but doubts about their backbone resurfaced again after defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea and they could do with a convincing performance against the Reds. Tonight's game kicks off at 1945GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has netted twice in both his last two matches against West Ham and Brighton, taking his total for the season in league and cup to 13. But look more closely at the opponents he has found the target against and he is a mirror image of his club, good against the also-rans and suspect against the big boys. Tottenham at home and Schalke away are the only two opponents of any substance against whom he has netted for the Gunners, the remainder have all come against lesser opposition. It will be interesting to see if Arsene Wenger starts the Frenchman tonight or whether he reverts to playing Theo Walcott down the middle. Liverpool were transformed when Steven Gerrard came on as a second-half substitute against Oldham and the Reds skipper single-handedly almost dragged his side back into the game. Gerrard has six goals to his name and only Carlos Tevez has more than his 11 Premier League assists. With Manchester United and Robin van Persie (18 goals) hosting lowly Southampton tonight, you feel Luis Suarez (16 goals) needs to find the net at the Emirates or come the end of the evening he could have some serious ground to make up in the race for the Golden Boot.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Liverpool have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 69 wins to 62 by Arsenal and 46 games being drawn. At the Emirates Stadium and its predecessors, the Gunners have 38 wins to 21 by Liverpool, with a further 29 meetings ending up all square. The corresponding match last season on Aug. 20 finished in a 2-0 win to Liverpool, thanks to an own goal from Aaron Ramsey on 78 minutes and a last-minute effort from Luis Suarez. Arsenal had Emmanuel Frimpong sent off 20 minutes from time in that game. The North London club have, however, won twice at Anfield since then and are looking to complete their second double over the Merseysiders in four years. They won the earlier meeting between the clubs 2-0 on Sep. 2 with goals from Lukas Podolski (31 mins) and Santi Cazorla (68).
0' FORM GUIDE
Arsenal start the night in sixth place, with 37 points from 23 games, three points better off than Liverpool, who sit directly below them. The Reds need to win by four to go above their hosts, due to their inferior goal difference. Arsenal hammered West Ham 5-1 last time out, ending a run of three games without a win. Liverpool also hit five in their last League game, thrashing Norwich 5-0 at Anfield. Since the start of December they have won six of nine, to move into the top half of the table. Arsenal are the division's highest scorers at home, but their home defence ranks 15th. Matches at the Emirates are the most entertaining in the division, featuring a Premier League-high average of 4.18 goals per game.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Arsenal have captain Thomas Vermaelen available again following an ankle injury and Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla should return after starting Saturday's FA Cup tie at Brighton on the bench. Mikel Arteta (calf), Francis Coquelin (hamstring) and Lukasz Fabianski (foot) are all out, while forward Gervinho is away at the African Nations Cup. Liverpool have Jose Reina (nose and thigh) and Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson (both hamstring) all fit again, Enrique having been sat on the sidelines for the past month.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of tonight's game is Kevin Friend, whose first Premier League appointment came in August 2009 when he refereed the match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham at Molineux. The Leicestershire whistleblower produced red cards in each of his first two matches of the season, to Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in the Community Shield against Manchester City at Wembley, and to Stoke's Dean Whitehead at Reading, but he has dismissed nobody since. Overall, he had cautioned 49 players in 13 Premier League outings before this evening's encounter. Friend oversaw Tottenham's surprise defeat at Leeds in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday. His assistants today are Scott Ledger and Darren England, while Jon Moss is the fourth official.
