Newcastle United vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' SISSOKO STEALS THE SHOW
Moussa Sissoko marks his home debut with an unforgetable performance, guiding his team to a well-deserved 3-2 victory. Chelsea played their part, too, and it looked like they might run away with it in parts. Frank Lampard and Oscar both scored with wonderful strikes to give the visitors the lead, but a Moussa Sissoko brace proved decisive. It looks like those fans with their "Rafa out" banners could get their way before too long...
90' LAST CHANCE
Frank Lampard's last-minute volley may be the last, and the Chelsea players are certain that Steven Taylor blocked that with his hand! Nothing doing says the ref and St. James' Park erupts to greet the final whistle. Newcastle United 3, Chelsea 2.
90' MATA CAUTION
Juan Mata is cautioned and man-of-the-match Moussa Sissoko departs, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa coming on. One more minute for Newcastle to hang on...
90' MORE ON THAT GOAL
MOUSSA SISSOKO, who has been absolutely sensational all game, starts the move and ends it. He picks out Davide Santon on the right with a laser-guided pass, and then bursts forward to receive the pull-back from Santon and lash home. What a goal!
90' GOOOAAALLL
Oh, what a goal! Moussa Sissoko surely wins it for Newcastle! He looks like a cracking signing already!
87' UP FOR GRABS
This game is there for whoever wants it most. They are both going for it and it could go either way.
84' LAMPARD SHOT!
Oscar pulls the ball back for Lampard, and the ball seems to take an eternity to reach the Chelsea star. He is caught in two minds - placement or power. In the end he tries to burst the net but his piledriver goes adrift. Sylvain Marveaux has come on for Yoan Gouffran, who receives a round of applause on departure.
82' GREAT RUN
Moussa Sissoko is really pulling the strings here. He is proving a menace in the centre of the park, too, this time beating a series of players before teeing up. He doesn't trust his left foot, though, and has to toe-poke it straight at the keeper with his right foot.
80' OFFSIDE
Newcastle United have a great attacking opportunity but naively allows himself to stray offside. Let off for the Blues.
76' WHO WILL BLINK FIRST?
With the game now being played at a frightening pace, it'll be a case of who makes the first mistake. So far, both defences are looking relatively sturdy, with Fabricio Coloccini this time making the block against Ashley Cole.
71' SO CLOSE!
Alan Pardew was just asking Moussa Sissoko about his fitness, but he should have no worries after this! Yoan Gouffran's hoofed clearance is kept in magnificently by Sissoko, who then beats Ashley Cole and flashes one across goal, forcing Petr Cech into the save.
69' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It's a rapid break as Yoan Gouffran bears down on goal, with only MOUSSA SISSOKO in attendance. Gouffran's initial effort is saved by Cech, but Sissoko makes no mistake with the rebound.
68' GOOOAAALLL
Should've listened to Rafa - Chelsea's determination to add to their lead allows Newcastle to equalise on the break - Moussa Sissoko the goalscorer.
66' SLIPPING AWAY
What a turnaround! It's now Newcastle clinging on, as Mata begins to influence the game more. Rafa Benitez tells his players to calm down a bit, but they look pretty determined to score again.
66' CLASS ACT
Frank Lampard hasn't had a good game by any stretch of the imagination, but he pops up with a super goal from nowhere - that's why he's such a great player. That makes him the first player to score 10 goals in a season for 10 consecutive years.
62' MORE ON THAT GOAL
You could say Chelsea haven't deserved the lead, but this strike on its own is worthy of the three points. JUAN MATA has been kept quiet all game but a fraction of space is all he needs, curling it sumptuously into the top corner!
62' GOOOAAALLL
Juan Mata pops up with an unbelievable strike to give Chelsea an unexpected lead!
62' LAMPARD CHANCE
Lampard almost adds to his tally, heading towards goal following an Ivanovic cross, but the header isn't good enough to beat Krul.
55' MORE ON THAT GOAL
The last of a host of throws deep on the right wing proves fruitful for the visitors. The ball just evades the outstretched leg of Yohan Cabaye, falling to FRANK LAMPARD, who drives it home from 20 yards. Nobody strikes the ball sweeter than the Chelsea veteran!
55' GOOOAAALLL
Chelsea draw level against the run of play, and it's Frank Lampard!
53' GOOD BALL IN
Jonas Gutierrez's good delivery threatens to prove another booby trap for the Chelsea defence. This time it's Bertrand at fault; his attempted clearance goes straight up in the air but Petr Cech comes to the rescue.
50' LACK OF COMPOSURE
This is pretty unbelievable now. The two players you could usually count on - Lampard and Terry - for their complete consistency are playing pretty poorly. This time their miscommunication results in Terry passing the ball straight out of play. The home crowd find that rather hilarious.
48' ANOTHER INJURY
Fernando Torres may be suffering a little here. Everytime he gets touched he goes down holding something. Or maybe he's just feeling sorry for himself.
46' KICK OFF
The second half is underway with both sides unchanged at the break. It'll be interesting to see which Chelsea will turn up for the second period.
45' FIRST HALF SUMMARY
It's been a superb half of football from Newcastle United, who have really taken it to the European champions this afternoon. The only disappointment will be that they aren't further ahead. They could've been, with Papiss Cisse missing a couple of sitters. It was Jonas Gutierrez who put them ahead with a great header. Demba Ba went off with a facial injury. Rafa Benitez has some serious work to do at the break, with his side looking lacklustre and sloppy.
45' HALF TIME
James Perch is booked late on, and it's a bit ridiculous, as his miscontrol is misconstrued as time-wasting. Nevertheless Newcastle United go in a goal to the good.
45' ALL NEWCASTLE
Chelsea will be lucky to go in only a goal down at this rate, and, believe it or not, Frank Lampard is looking the clumsiest of the lot at the moment. Yohan Cabaye's long ball is missed by all Chelsea defenders, affording Moussa Sissoko half a chance, but Petr Cech makes the save.
43' SUBSTITUTION
Demba Ba cut a forlorn figure there, looking a little comical with his taped-up face, and now John Terry has pointed out that he shouldn't be playing and Rafa Benitez takes heed, bringing on Fernando Torres for the injured party.
41' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Davide Santon has to receive much of the credit for a wonderful delivery, but even more credit has to be given to the goalscorer, JONAS GUTIERREZ, who gets in front of John Terry and heads a bullet past Cech into the bottom-right corner.
41' GOOOAAALLL
Newcastle United take a well-deserved lead through Jonas Gutierrez!!
39' OPPORTUNITY WASTED
It was 11 against nine for a while there, and Newcastle United had a pretty good counter on, but Yoan Gouffran took it upon himself to score a home run, hitting the top tier with a woeful effort. Both Ramires and Ba are back on, but Ba doesn't look too healthy.
36' SUPER CHANCE FOR CISSE!
The Sissoko-Cabaye duo carve open the defence and feed Papiss Cisse through on goal, about 10 yards out. The best chance of the game is wasted as his pass-shot doesn't trouble Cech. Demba Ba is still off the field, and it's looking like Fernando Torres might get a chance here.
33' CHANCE TO SILENCE THE CROWD
Frank Lampard's persistence finds Demba Ba, who seems to have got the better of ex-teammate Fabricio Coloccini. He gets a shot away, which is parried back at him. The Chelsea striker throws himself at it and faces it fractionally wide. Ba is now receiving some treatment for that.
29' YELLOW CARD ONLY
Ramires' challenge is two-footed, but as his studs aren't showing, Howard Webb only shows a yellow card. There was a moment of worry for Chelsea there, but replays show that a red card would have been pretty harsh.
26' CHELSEA CORNER
A Juan Mata corner is dropped, but the brave Newcastle defenders make a double-block to quell the chaos in the area. The home side break but Moussa Sissoko's final effort sails well over the bar.
23' ORDER RESTORED
After a period of sloppiness from both sides, Newcastle have taken the initiative and are really testing Chelsea now. Good build-up play culminates in a volleyed thunderbolt from Davide Santon, which travels marginally wide of Petr Cech's left-hand post.
18' CHELSEA'S UNPREDICTABILITY
In the past few minutes, we've seen Chelsea up their play massively, and that's why they're such a dangerous side. On the other hand, we've seen their game plumitt in the latter stages of the match recently - you never know which Chelsea is going to turn up. Shots from Oscar and Yohan Cabaye are speculative, but Papiss Cisse has a real chance and spurns it, allowing Petr Cech to make a relatively comfortable save at his near post.
15' BEST CHANCE OF THE GAME SO FAR
There's the danger! All of a sudden Chelsea begin to grow into the game, as Juan Mata searches out Ashley Cole on the left. The wing-back beats Mathieu Debuchy all ends up and pulls the ball back for Frank Lampard. You'd back him to put that one away but the Chelsea legend fails to hit the target.
12' BRIGHT START CONTINUES
Newcastle United's bright start is continuing past the opening quarter of an hour - they're passing well, seeing a lot of the ball and pressing relentlessly - but the only danger is that the Blues are only going to get better. They need to see something materialise from their efforts. Meanwhile, Demba Ba's first touch is greeted by an echo of boos from the home crowd.
10' SUPPORT FROM THE STANDS
I've just spotted a lovely big banner in the Chelsea contingent. It reads "Rafa out"; good to know everyone has faith in you, eh?
7' ANOTHER SHOT ON GOAL
This time it's Davide Santon who's testing Petr Cech. The Italian drifts inside and pulls the trigger but all he achieves is a daisy-cutter and it's never going to beat the Chelsea stopper.
5' WHO NEEDS BA?
Papiss Cisse seems to have something to prove this afternoon, or perhaps he just loves the north-south rivalry - remember those two wonder goals he scored against the Londoners last year? Well, he almost penetrates the Chelsea defence early on here, but his right-footed shot is blocked.
2' GOOD START FOR THE TOON ARMY
With a wealth of fresh faces in the side, and coming off the back of that win against Villa in midweek, Newcastle are playing with a new lease of life. They're really having a go early on here, forcing the Blues onto the back foot.
1' KICK OFF
We're off at St. James' Park. 37 seconds in and we've already had the first shot, Yoan Gouffran pulling the trigger early on; that's an easy one for Petr Cech though, who is back in the side today following a calf injury.
0' CHELSEA LINE-UP
Following the last minute self-destruction against Reading on Wednesday, John Terry is included in the heart of defence to sort his teammates out. Demba Ba is the lone attacker, with Juan Mata playing just off him. Ryan Bertrand continues his stint on the wing, filling in for the suspended Eden Hazard, who is serving the third of three games on the sideline for an innocuous poke on an irritating ballboy.
0' NEWCASTLE LINE-UP
The French revolution is underway on Tyneside, as Yoan Gouffran and Moussa Sissoko are thrown straight into the starting line-up, accompanying their relatively new compatriote Mathieu Debuchy. Papiss Cisse spearheads the Newcastle attack, with Shola Ameobi in reserve should Alan Pardew feel the need for a little extra firepower. Sylvain Marveaux is also among the subs despite still suffering slightly with a foot injury.

0' CHELSEA TEAM NEWS
Good news for the Blues - Petr Cech is available to return after injury saw an under-par Ross Turnbull fill in and not have the greatest of times. Juan Mata is also fit after coming off in the midweek game with Reading with a suspected ankle injury. David Luiz misses the trip up north, while Eden Hazard will also take no part, completing his three-match ban today.
0' NEWCASTLE TEAM NEWS
Pardew has new recruits Sissoko and Gouffran to incorporate, while the only absentees are Marveaux - out with a foot injury - and long-term sideliner Ben Arfa. Cheik Tiote is also ruled out as he travels to the African Cup of Nations.
0' TRAVELLING BACK UP NORTH
Demba Ba will (most likely) make his return to St. James' Park today, as he continues to boast the Toon's best goal-scoring tally this season with 13 goals. Jostling for appearances with El Niño - or el hombre, as perhaps he should be known now - he has been just as clinical for his new side, netting three goals in his four appearances so far - certainly a case for a start ahead of Torres this afternoon methinks.
0' MATCH PREVIEW
If you missed Newcastle's Tuesday night trip to Aston Villa, then you may not recognise many of the fellas playing in black and white today. Yep, it seems Mr. Pardew has gone all Arsene Wenger and recruited a load of Frenchmen to get the job done. Similarly, if you haven't seen Chelsea recently, you may notice a few oddities going on - Torres has shaved all his hair off (alas, not quenching his goal drought) and a manager has lasted more than 10 Premier League games! On the other hand, the fans never liked him and after a series of unimpressive draws, the exit door draws ever-closer.
