Fulham vs. Manchester United
Minute Commentary
90' FT: FULHAM 0 MAN UTD 1
Wayne Rooney's goal 11 minutes from time gives United a slender victory which takes them 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League. The visitors were made to work extremely hard for the win, which says as much about the dogged determination of Fulham as it does their own attacking deficiencies. The first half was notable for a floodlight failure just before the interval and a string of missed chances. United hit the woodwork through Rooney and Patrice Evra, while Mark Schwarzer made two world-class saves. At the other end, David de Gea responded to recent criticism with a couple of blinding stops of his own to deny John Arne Riise and Bryan Ruiz. The second half was low key in comparison to the first and Fulham kept the leaders at bay for the bulk of it. They even saw a Ruiz effort cleared off the line by Rafael before being undone by Rooney's cool finish which saw the England striker bring up double figures in Premier League goals for a ninth consecutive season.
90' LAST CHANCE SALOON
Petric wins a free-kick in a promising position 25 yards from goal with stoppage time all but up. Rodallega's shot hits the top of the wall. That's the final whistle.
90' UNITED BOOKING
Rooney earns a late caution for kicking the ball away.
90' CLEARED OFF THE LINE
Senderos meets a Riise corner with a towering header that is cleared off the line by Van Persie. Hernandez fluffs a golden chance to seal the points at the other end, losing control at the vital moment.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of three minutes of added time.
88' LOOKING COMFORTABLE
Fulham are doing all the pressing here, pumping balls into the box and hoping that something falls the way of Mladen Petric. United look comfortable, though.
85' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
United's final change sees Danny Welbeck replace Nani.
84' VAN PERSIE SAVED BY THE FLAG
Van Persie volleys over from a good position and is relieved to see the flag had gone up for offside.
82' FULHAM SUBSTITUTION
On comes the supersub. Mladen Petric replaces Ashkan Dejagah.
80' GOAL DETAILS
Some poor defending from Senderos allowed Rooney to latch on to a long ball from the back. The United forward advanced before placing a low shot into the corner beyond Schwarzer. That's harsh on Fulham.
79' GOAL: FULHAM 0 MAN UTD 1
Wayne Rooney gives United the lead.
78' OFF THE LINE
Fulham go close from a left-wing corner. Baird wins the initial header, Ruiz flicks goalwards and Rafael heads off the line.
77' FINE DEFENDING FROM BAIRD
Van Persie almost cushions a lovely pass into the path of Hernandez, but Baird is well positioned to get his body in the way.
76' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
Ryan Giggs replaces Tom Cleverley for United. It's his 100th Premier League appearance as a substitute, his 650th overall.
74' DEJAGAH HEADS WIDE
Ruiz escapes down the left and stands up a delightful cross. Dejagah shows real determination to get there in front of Evra, but can only head wide under pressure. Hernandez miskicks horribly at the other end.
72' DE GEA DOES JUST ENOUGH
Riether finds space on the edge of the area and his powerful low shot is parried by De Gea. Ruiz is caught on his heels somewhat and unable to hook home the rebound.
69' FULHAM SUBSTITUTION
Karagounis makes way as is often the case at this stage and on comes debut boy Urby Emanuelson.
68' EASY SAVE FOR SCHWARZER
Van Persie lines up a free-kick 30 yards from goal. His curling effort is on target, but Schwarzer has time to get across and save by his post.
66' UNITED SUBSTITUTION
Javier Hernandez replaces Valencia as Ferguson makes his first change.
64' FULHAM BOOKING
Baird is the first man shown the yellow card, for a trip on Valencia.
62' FERGIE GETTING ANNOYED
Sir Alex Ferguson is starting to get a little irritated on the sidelines. He gives referee Friend an earful over the award of a free-kick against Rafael.
60' WAITING IN THE WINGS
Martin Jol, meantime, will want to have a look at his new Dutch recruit Urby Emanuelson, who is warming up on the sidelines.
58' FERGIE CONSIDERS HIS OPTIONS
Surely it can't be long before Fergie makes a change. Giggs for Nani or Hernandez for Cleverley would be favourites in my book.
54' KARAGOUNIS SHOOTS WIDE
Karagounis pinches the ball off Ferdinand and advances down the centre. His old legs carry him to the edge of the box, where he drags a shot wide
50' WAIT GOES ON FOR A GOAL
United have gone 97 matches since their last goalless draw. And the last 0-0 draw between these sides came in 1924. Van Persie's tame looping header is plucked from the air by Schwarzer. Still we wait for a goal.
47' NEWS ON HANGELAND
Hangeland has a knock, apparently. Doesn't sound too serious.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
United get the second half under way. Fulham have replaced Hangeland with Aaron Hughes at the break.
45' HT: FULHAM 0 MAN UTD 0
It may be goalless, but that was a pulsating half of attacking football in which Fulham have played a full part. United will wonder quite how they didn't take the lead inside ten minutes after a mad goalmouth scramble which saw Mark Schwarzer deny both Wayne Rooney and his own defender, Brede Hangeland, from finding his own net. In between, Patrice Evra hit the bar from six yards out. Evra forced Schwarzer into another good save moments later and Hangeland, seemingly intent on scoring an own goal, has hit his own crossbar from another corner. Rooney also struck the woodwork with a fine curling shot that had the Fulham goalkeeper beaten. It has not, though, been all one-way traffic. At the other end David de Gea has made brilliant saves to keep put a thunderbolt from John Arne Riise and a crisp right-footer from Bryan Ruiz, which came back off the inside of a post. Oh, and there was a nine-minute delay just before half-time when the floodlights failed. Other than that, it was an uneventful first 55 minutes.
45' VAN PERSIE SHOT SAVED
A Van Persie corner almost falls for Evans in the box. Fulham clear their lines, but only for a moment, as RVP sees his first shot on target easily gathered by Schwarzer.
45' PLAY BEGINS AGAIN
Right, we are now playing again after a nine-minute delay. There were two and a half minutes of time left to play at the end of the first half when we stopped.
45' READY TO GO AGAIN
The players are making their way back on to the pitch, we should get started in a moment or two.
45' LIGHTS BACK ON
It's now bright enough to play again, most of the floodlights are back on. Wonder if they'll take an early half-time, like they take an early tea in cricket, and play 55 minutes in the second half?
45' PLAYERS GO OFF FOR NOW
The players have gone off for now. We'll report back when we have further updates on when or if we can get started again.
45' DARKNESS FALLS
The players have been given special dispensation to take their mobile phones out on to the pitch to play by. Only joking, they are congregated by the halfway line at present.
44' LIGHTS OUT ALL ROUND
The floodlights have failed here. We've got the advertising hoardings and the lights in the stands to watch by.
41' RIETHER DOING A GOOD JOB
Fulham's right-back Riether has done an impressive job shackling the enigmatic Nani in this first half. It would be no surprise to see Sir Alex go to the bench at the break and replace the Portuguese.
38' KEEPING RVP QUIET
United have threatened for most of this first half, but the one man we have seen little of has been Premier League leading scorer Robin van Persie. He's hardly had a sniff so far.
35' MISTAKEN IDENTITY
Rafael is wearing a pair of yellow boots bearing the name Fabio. Has he got the wrong footwear, or is his twin brother sneakily playing his second match of the day, having already turned out for Queens Park Rangers at lunchtime?
33' OFF THE WOODWORK AGAIN
Nani and Cleverley combine to tee up Rooney, whose curler from the edge of the box comes back off the right-hand post.
31' EVRA NEEDS TREATMENT
Evra gets caught in the middle of a Ruiz and Evans sandwich and needs treatment for a blow to the back of his head.
28' ATTACK BEST FORM OF DEFENCE
Fulham fans will feel their side needs to score tonight. Martin Jol's men have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 10 league matches.
25' TURNING THE SCREW
Rooney feeds Nani on the left and looks to get on the end of the return pass. The final ball is lacking and Fulham escape with a corner. Hangeland, unlike earlier, doesn't threaten his own goal with the clearance.
21' ROONEY ONLY JUST WIDE
Rooney combines effortlessly with Van Persie before sliding an angled shot about a foot wide of Schwarzer's right-hand upright.
18' WIDE FROM DEJAGAH
It's Fulham's turn to attack again. United only half-clear a free-kick and Dejagah slices a right-foot effort wide.
16' RUIZ HITS THE POST
Ruiz comes within a coat of paint of giving Fulham the lead. Collecting the ball from Riise, his instinctive first-time shot comes back off the inside of the post via a wonderful fingertip save from De Gea. At the other end a last-gasp tackle by Hangeland robs Nani. Hangeland then hits his own bar from a United corner and Valencia drills into the side-netting.
13' STUNNING SAVE FROM DE GEA
Fulham are showing attacking intent themselves here. A blockbuster of a left-foot shot from Riise is acrobatically turned over the bar by De Gea. Cracking shot, stunning save.
12' ROONEY SHOT BLOCKED
United break down the right. Rooney tries an angled drive, but his shot hits his own man, Cleverley.
10' INCREDIBLE FULHAM ESCAPE
United go so close to taking the lead after some incredible goalmouth action. Schwarzer makes an incredible save to stop a corner deflecting in off the back of Hangeland, Evra hits the bar from point-blank range and Rooney sees his follow-up stopped. Moments later Schwarzer saves well again from Evra.
8' FIRST CORNER FOR UNITED
Nani wins an early corner for United. Rooney wanders over to the left to deliver, ignoring the fat jibes from the home fans. The set-piece is useful, but Schwarzer punches clear.
5' EARLY SCARE FOR UNITED
United's defence is caught square by a dinked ball by Ruiz over the top for Rodallega. The Colombian unselfishly sets up Dejagah instead of going for goal and the eventual shot is blocked.
4' OMEN FOR FULHAM?
There was not an away win in the seven earlier Premier League games today. Martin Jol will be hoping the trend continues.
2' PLENTY TO PLAY FOR
The Cottagers will find themselves in the top half of the table if they win tonight. United, as we have mentioned already, can go ten points clear at the top.
1' HERE WE GO
Fulham kick off, attacking the goal to our right.

0' PREVIEW
Manchester United have the chance to open up their biggest lead of the season with victory at Fulham in Saturday's evening game in the Premier League. United's advantage over Manchester City could be ten points by the time their nearest rivals next take to the field against Liverpool on Sunday. These two sides met just eight days ago at Old Trafford in the fourth round of the FA Cup, when United romped to a 4-1 victory. It's not an easy task to keep one of the most potent strikeforces in the division quiet, but Martin Jol knows he needs a good performance from his backline today. United have found the net inside the first 13 minutes in five of the last six games between these sides – they did again last weekend – and another early goal for the visitors will only make the outcome even more predictable than it already looks. “They will put us under pressure, they have a lot of good players and they have a lot of mobility,” Jol said. “Man United is not our favourite team to play against so we have got to come up with some answers.” One of the keys today could be how well United themselves defend. Lately they have started shooting themselves in the foot again defensively, just like they did at the start of the season. Mistakes from David de Gea and Michael Carrick in their last two league games have cost goals. Another blunder at the back today will not improve Sir Alex Ferguson's mood as he gets ready to contest an FA charge of misconduct for critical remarks he made of linesman Simon Beck in the aftermath of his side's recent draw at White Hart Lane. Today's game kicks off at 1730GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Mladen Petric came off the bench and scored a crucial third goal for the Cottagers against West Ham on Wednesday night and may get the nod to start alongside Huge Rodallega with Dimitar Berbatov ruled out with injury. “He's probably the best substitute ever,” Jol said of Petric yesterday. “He's scored more goals than any other striker in England if you look at the time he's played. Every time he comes on he seems to score a goal, he's a very good substitute.” And what of his new loan signing from AC Milan, Urby Emanuelson? “He's a bit like [Mousa] Dembele, he's gifted,” said Jol. “Of course, Dembele's stronger, you won't find a second Dembele in England. Urby's lightweight, but he's very good, he's quick, he's agile, he's good on the ball.” For United, look no further than Robin van Persie, who has 18 Premier League goals to his name. RVP drew a surprising blank at home to Southampton in midweek, only the second time in 11 outings in league or cup where he has failed to find the net. Wayne Rooney scored twice in that match and there are the signs that he is going to go on one of his scoring streaks. The England man has nine goals in his last nine games in all competitions – either side of an injury lay-off – and has netted five times in his last four starts against Fulham.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
United have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 39 wins to 12 by Fulham and 14 games being drawn. At Craven Cottage, United have 11 wins to 10 by Fulham, with a further 11 meetings ending up all square. United have won the last four meetings between the sides and are unbeaten in six. Fulham's last win was the 3-0 triumph on Dec. 19, 2009. The corresponding match last season on Dec. 21 finished in a 5-0 win for United with goals from Danny Welbeck (5 minutes), Nani (28), Ryan Giggs (43), Wayne Rooney (88) and Dimitar Berbatov (90). The earlier meeting between the sides in the league this season was a much closer affair. Damien Duff gave the visitors a shock third-minute lead, only for Robin van Persie to equalise seven minutes later. Two goals in six minutes from Shinji Kagawa and Rafael put United in charge, but an own goal midway through the second half from Nemanja Vidic gave the visitors hope. As already mentioned, United won 4-1 in the Cup last weekend with an early penalty from Ryan Giggs and second half goals from Rooney and Javier Hernandez (2). Fulham might have been hammered 5-0 on this ground last season, but prior to that they had won two and drawn one of three meetings with United at Craven Cottage.
0' FORM GUIDE
United are top of the table with 59 points from 24 games, seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City. Fulham started the weekend in 12th place with 28 points, eight points clear of the teams in the relegation zone. Martin Jol's side have collected 18 points at Craven Cottage and are the highest scoring side at home in the lower half of the table, with 21 goals. United's 28 goals is by far the most of any team in the top flight away from home, and their away record overall is equally impressive, with 26 points and eight victories from their 12 road games. United are unbeaten in the league since a 1-0 defeat at Norwich on Nov. 17, winning ten and drawing two of their subsequent matches. Fulham's much-needed win over West Ham in midweek was only their third in the league in 16 outings.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Fulham will be without Dimitar Berbatov after the former Manchester United striker pulled his hamstring against West Ham in midweek. Also ruled out are Steve Sidwell and Mahamadou Diarra (both knee), Kerim Frei (pelvis) and Kieran Richardson (calf). Loan signing Urby Emanuelson is available, but fellow deadline-day captures Stanislav Manolev and Eyong Enoh must wait until they receive work permits. For United, Sir Alex is expected to recall Rio Ferdinand to the centre of his defence and Jonny Evans is available again after a hamstring injury. Ashley Young (knee) is still out.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of this evening's game is Kevin Friend, whose first Premier League appointment came in August 2009 when he refereed the match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham at Molineux. The Leicestershire whistleblower produced red cards in each of his first two matches of the season, to Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in the Community Shield against Manchester City at Wembley, and to Stoke's Dean Whitehead at Reading, but he has dismissed nobody since. Overall, he has cautioned 53 players in 14 Premier League outings. Friend oversaw Arsenal's entertaining 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates in midweek. His assistants today are Scott Ledger and Stuart Burt, while Michael Oliver is the fourth official.
