West Bromwich Albion vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Minute Commentary
90' WEST BROM 0 - 1 SPURS
Gareth Bale scored a stunning goal to earn Tottenham a 1-0 win over ten-man West Brom at the Hawthorns. The Baggies held their own in a fascinating first half, but Gareth Bale stood out throughout in a free role behind the front-man. An ankle injury for Jermain Defoe robbed the visitors of the only first-team striker in their squad, but allowed for the introduction of the hugely impressive Lewis Holtby, who ran the game on only his second appearance for the club. Just moments after the interval the game was turned on its head as Goran Popov appeared to spit at Kyle Walker in an altercation, prompting an immediate red card. From that moment on it was all Spurs, but the visitors still needed a moment of magic to grab the win, with Bale smashing in a left-footed drive from outside of the area midway through the half. AVB's side couldn't force a second, despite plenty of pressure, keeping the game alive to the last, but in the end the three points went to the dominant visitors. At the Hawthorns it finished West Brom 0, Spurs 1.
90' FULL-TIME
The final whistle goes to seal a 1-0 win for Tottenham and another disappointing defeat for West Brom.
90' LLORIS TO THE RESCUE
Michael Dawson needlessly gives away a free-kick and everyone is forward for the Baggies - including the keeper! However, Hugo Lloris comes steaming off his line to claim the cross, and that should just about be that.
90' BALE IS DOWN AGAIN
Gareth Bale is caught by two rash challenges, with Steven Reid also catching the winger square in the face with a wayward arm. Spurs put the ball out of play so that Bale can receive treatment, and after a minute he tentatively gets back to his feet.
90' ADDED TIME
There will be four minutes of added time at the end of the 90.
88' TIME TICKING AWAY
Spurs had a habit of conceding late goals earlier in the season, and at 1-0 AVB will be concerned that his side might get stung by their ten-man opponents in the last few minutes.
86' BALE HEADS OVER
Gylfi Sigurdsson's first action is to whip in a terrific corner that picks out Bale, but the goalscorer can't keep his powerful header down.
85' CHANGE FOR SPURS
That will be the last action for Aaron Lennon, as he is replaced by Gylfi Sigurdsson.
84' LENNON DENIED
A sumptuous cross-field pass by Lewis Holtby puts Aaron Lennon into space down the left, and he cuts into the area before getting a shot away, only to see his effort blocked.
80' DOUBLE CHANGE FOR WEST BROM
Claudio Yacob and Graham Dorrans are off, and on come some fresh legs in the shape of Marc-Antoine Fortune and Markus Rosenberg.
79' ANOTHER SNIFF FOR LONG
Chris Brunt does well to slide a ball through to Shane Long, who this time does get his shot away, but it's an easy save for Hugo Lloris.
78' DAWSON DEALS WITH LONG
Down to ten men and completely under the cosh for the whole of the second half, West Brom will be relieved to still be in this game. A hopeful punt up to Shane Long almost gets the striker in behind, but Michael Dawson shuts down the space and eases the Baggies forward off the ball.
77' CHANGE FOR SPURS
Kyle Walker is replaced by William Gallas by AVB. It will be interesting to see if that is a straight swap to give Walker a rest or a change to a back three.
75' BIG IMPACT BY THE NEW MAN
Lewis Holtby has been everywhere for Spurs since his introduction. Dropping deep into midfield, linking play all over the park and getting into the area beyond Clint Dempsey, the German looks to be a top signing for the Lilywhites.
72' THANKLESS TASK FOR LONG
Shane Long is completely isolated up top for West Brom and faces aerial challenges with Michael Dawson every time he has a chance to get hold of the ball. Credit needs to go to the Irish international for making a really decent fist of it.
69' BALE DENIED AGAIN
Gareth Bale is really in the mood now, and his latest effort is deflected fractionally wide after he brilliantly made space for himself inside the area.
67' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
West Brom appealed in vain for an offside decision against Lewis Holtby (who was level) out on the right, and Spurs did well to keep possession and work the ball to the feet of Gareth Bale. After shifting it onto his left and out of the reach of his marker, Bale slammed an unstoppable pile-driver past Ben Foster to make it 1-0. What a hit!
66' GOOOAAALLL!!!
What a goal!!! Gareth Bale puts Spurs ahead with a thunderous strike. 1-0!
62' VERTONGHEN'S SHOT DEFLECTED
Jan Vertonghen is given time and space inside the West Brom half so goes for goal, but a deflection sends his effort well wide. The corner is comfortably dealt with by the Baggies, and the game remains frustrating for the visitors.
60' BALE BACK ON HIS FEET
Gareth Bale was clattered by Ben Foster as he looked to get in behind the West Brom defence, but the winger didn't make much of it and is quickly back to his feet after a bit of magic spray.
57' HOLTBY DENIED AGAIN
Lewis Holtby attempts a first time effort at the near post, but Ben Foster had shut him down well and makes the save. The West Brom goalkeeper then holds on to the ball as Spurs look to take the corner quickly, causing a bit of pushing and shoving, but it's much ado about nothing.
55' NEEDED TO BE SPECIAL...
Benoit Assou-Ekotto attempts to hit a first-time volley from 30 yards out, and his shot rises well over Ben Foster's bar.
53' HOLTBY TESTS FOSTER
Lewis Holtby's clever run is picked out by Benoit Assou-Ekotto, and the new Spurs man forces the West Brom keeper to make a smart save at his near post with a fizzing strike.
52' CHANGE FOR WEST BROM
Steve Clarke is forced to make a change because of that sending off, and he sacrifices one of his strikers. Off comes Romelu Lukaku to be replaced by Liam Ridgewell.
50' BALE RUNNING THE SHOW
Gareth Bale is really in the mood today, drifting all over the pitch and getting plenty of shots away. His latest effort strikes Gareth McAuley and goes behind for a corner.
47' RED CARD
Goran Popov appears to spit in the direction of Kyle Walker and referee Mark Clattenburg immediately brandishes a red card. West Brom are down to ten, and we'll no doubt hear more about that incident.
46' SECOND HALF
The game is back underway at the Hawthorns.
45' HALF-TIME
The whistle goes to end an entertaining half at the Hawthorns. Both teams have played with pace and intensity, with Gareth Bale a stand-out performer. The concern for the visitors will be that they look a little toothless in attack and are now without any available strikers in their squad after Jermain Defoe went off with an ankle problem. Steve Clarke will be pleased with how his team have defended, but will expect better from his two strikers after the break.
45' STUNNING EFFORT BY BALE
Gareth Bale drifts from left to right with the ball at his feet, before cutting back onto his favoured foot and forcing Ben Foster into a top save to keep it goalless at the break.
45' THE FLAG IS UP
Romelu Lukaku breaks in behind the Spurs defence again, but this time he started his run too early. It wouldn't have mattered either way, as Hugo Lloris was astonishingly quick out of his area to sweep up behind his centre-backs.
43' POOR SHOT BY LUKAKU
Benoit Assou-Ekotto plays Romelu Lukaku on, but the striker is chased well by Kyle Walker and shoots his shot over the bar under pressure.
40' RELIEF FOR THE BAGGIES
Another result of that change is that Gareth Bale will shift back to the left after playing much of the game roaming through the middle. That will be seen as a major positive for the hosts, as they have struggled to contain the Welsh winger at times.
38' CHANGE FOR SPURS
Jermain Defoe is helped down the tunnel with a heavily strapped ankle, and on comes January signing Lewis Holtby. Clint Dempsey will presumably play up top.
36' CONCERN FOR SPURS
With Emmanuel Adebayor away in South Africa, Spurs only have one recognised first-team striker... and Jermain Defoe is now writhing in agony after twisting his ankle in a challenge with Shane Long.
33' HIGH AND WIDE
Gareth Bale looks to drill the free-kick into the top corner, but he gets slightly under it and the ball rises into the stands… much to the delight of the home faithful.
32' NEEDLESS FOUL
Jermain Defoe is hacked down right on the edge of the area, and Spurs have a free-kick in an extremely dangerous position.
31' VERTONGHEN MARAUDS FORWARD
West Brom do well to trap Spurs inside their own half with the ball, but Jan Vertonghen does brilliantly to jink past a couple of tackles before drawing a foul.
26' DEMPSEY SHOOTS WIDE
Steve Clarke will be very disappointed to see his midfield give Clint Dempsey acres of space in between the lines, but the American can't take advantage, slicing his shot wide from just outside the box.
25' ANOTHER GREAT RUN BY BALE
Charging down the right again on the break, Gareth Bale is pushed onto his right foot in the area, but still manages to fizz in a cross. Jermain Defoe does't gamble, so the ball flies out for a throw-in on the far side.
24' LLORIS DOES WELL
Moussa Dembele is very disappointed to see a corner awarded against him after ushering the ball out of play. The delivery is good, but Hugo Lloris bravely comes out and gets a hand to the ball to tip it out of the area.
20' GOOD SAVE BY LLORIS
A deflected pass leaves Graham Dorrans in space inside the Spurs half, and the midfielder does well to pick out Shane Long in the box with a curling pass. However, Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris comes out to shut off the angle, and the French international saves with his legs as Long attempts to find the far corner.
19' EXCELLENT START TO THE GAME
The opening exchanges have been hugely entertaining at the Hawthorns, with both teams playing with pace and intent on the counter-attack. Spurs have seen more of the ball, but West Brom are committing enough men forward to also leave themselves vulnerable to a break.
16' SHARP OFF HIS LINE
Gareth McAuley's poor back-header almost lets in Jermain Defoe, but Ben Foster comes steaming off his line to beat the England striker to the ball.
15' CONCERNING GOALKEEPING
Ben Foster flaps horribly at the resulting corner, and the West Brom stopper is fortunate to see the loose ball fall to the feet of a defender.
14' STUNNING RUN BY BALE
Gareth Bale drifted inside to great effect against Norwich in midweek, and tears through the West Brom defence again here. Bursting into the area down the inside-right channel, Bale's cross-shot is headed over his own bar by Jonas Olsson.
12' ORGANISED DEFENCE
West Brom are forcing the Spurs attacks in-field, where they are met by a wall of defenders. It's a clever tactic, and with the visitors lacking a genuine playmaker it is making them looking toothless in the opening stages. In contrast, Shane Long and Romelu Lukaku look dangerous on the break.
10' WORTH A TRY
Romelu Lukaku attempts to beat Kyle Walker for pace, and inevitably loses, but the on-loan forward tries to get away with a cheeky push to steal possession just before the ball goes out of play. It was worth a go, but the referee spotted it and Walker gets the free-kick.
7' POOR HEADER BY DEMPSEY
Aaron Lennon trusts his pace to go on the outside of his full-back, and the Spurs winger does superbly to clip a cross to the back post. Clint Dempsey drifts off the back of his marker to earn a free header, but he can't get any power on his effort and directs it wide in any case.
6' HIGH-TEMPO START
The game has started with a bang, with both teams right at it. Corners at both end have been well dealt with, but Gareth Bale and Romelu Lukaku are causing real problems at either end of the pitch.
3' EARLY SNIFF FOR LONG
Shane Long is gifted a clean run on goal as a long punt forward takes an unfortunate deflection off a Spurs player, but the striker's control slightly lets him down, and Hugo Lloris is out quickly to force him wide.
1' KICK-OFF
The game is underway at the Hawthorns, with West Brom in their usual home strip and Spurs kitted out in their slightly questionable grey and black number.
0' PREVIEW: WEST BROMWICH ALBION VS. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
It's always a relief for every Premier League manager to see the back of the January transfer merry-go-round, and both of the men on the touch-line in today's game at the Hawthorns will certainly have mixed feelings after an unusually fraught finale on Thursday. Steve Clarke had to suffer the indignity of Peter Odemwingie's unsanctioned self-promotion jaunt down to Loftus Road, where Harry Redknapp promptly did the honourable thing and sent him back where he came from. More pleasing for the Scot will be the continued loyalty of prized assets such as Yousef Mulumbu and Claudio Jacob, who will remain in the West Midlands at least until the end of the season. Andre Villas-Boas had a more serene passage through January, moving forward the acquisition of young midfielder Lewis Holtby from Schalke this week for £1.25 million, a deal having previously been done for him to arrive in the summer. That freed up Redknapp to bring Jermaine Jenas and Andros Townsend to QPR on loan from White Hart Lane. These two sides shared a 1-1 draw back in August, with James Morison grabbing a last-minute equaliser for the Baggies after Tottenham had dominated the encounter.
0' HANDBAGGIES
To what extent the Odemwingie farce will have damaged morale in the camp is unclear, but the Clarke gave the Cameroonian a very public dressing-down on Friday, typical of the open and honest leadership which has so effectively propelled his charges into a comfortable ninth position in the table. The striker has been relieved of the need to return to training until next week and will play no part in this game. Yousef Mulumbu may though, having exited the African Cup of Nations with his DR Congo side. He is the Baggies only doubt, as they seek to arrest a slide that has seen them take only two points from a possible 21.
0' BLUNT SPURS
Jermain Defoe is the only out-and-out striker currently present at Tottenham, as rumours linking them to January moves for the likes of Sevilla's Alvaro Negredo came to nothing. With three goals in their last four games, Andre Villas-Boas could be forgiven for wearing the colours of Burkina Faso today as they take on Emmanuel Adebayor's Togo side in the African Cup of Nations. After going eight unbeaten, Tottenham are suddenly without a win in four, a limp draw at Norwich and an under-par exit at the Leeds United in the FA Cup the latest scratches on their copybook. An improving Everton missed the opportunity to regain fourth spot yesterday, so a Spurs win today would restore a valuable four-point cushion over their Merseyside rivals. Lewis Holtby may be handed a debut, but Tom Huddlestone will not be risked, while Sandro and Younes Kaboul remain more long-term problems.
