Liverpool vs. West Bromwich Albion
Minute Commentary
90' SMASH AND GRAB ALBION
West Brom record a Premier League double over Liverpool and a double at Anfield after their success last season. The turning point in the match came when the hosts were awarded a penalty with 12 minutes remaining, but the brilliant Ben Foster made a stunning stop to deny Steven Gerrard's right-foot strike from going in. And Albion made them pay with a late smash and grab raid. Firstly, Gareth McAuley powered his header home from a corner kick and then as the game entered stoppage time, Steve Clarke's side finished things off with a counter-attacking goal of real quailty. Chris Brunt found Romelu Lukaku and the substitute finished coolly for his 10th goal of the season. Their first win in nine games takes the Baggies back above their opponents into eighth on 37 points.
90' FULL-TIME
A disappointing night for Reds boss Brendan Rodgers as his Liverpool side are beaten 2-0 at home by West Brom.
90' SUAREZ BOOKED
Luis Suarez is cautioned by referee Jon Moss for sarcastically clapping his decision. Anfield is virtually empty now.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
There are FIVE minutes of stoppage time being added on, but you feel the game is over already with Albion two goals to the good.
90' SUCKER PUNCH
You can hardly hear a pin drop at Anfield as West Brom snatch another on the break. Chris Brunt plays substitute Romelu Lukaku in on goal and the man on loan from Chelsea takes a touch before sending the ball beyond Pepe Reina into the far corner.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
ROMELU LUKAKU
89' POWERFUL LUKAKU
Romelu Lukaku coasts past Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger before dragging his right-foot shot wide of the far post with Pepe Reina watching it all the way.
86' ANOTHER CHANGE
West Brom win another corner, but this time, Liverpool defend it well. Now the visitors make another substitution as Marc-Antoine Fortune comes on for Shane Long, who has worked hard this evening.
84' ALBION ON FOR DOUBLE
Liverpool have won five of their last six home games, but there could be a shock on the cards tonight as West Brom are now closing in on a Premier League double against their opponents.
82' SHOCK AT ANFIELD
Amazingly, West Brom have taken the lead at Anfield, totally against the run of play. Youssouf Mulumbu's shot was parried wide by Pepe Reina and from the resulting corner defender Gareth McAuley towered above Liverpool players to power his header in off the underside of the crossbar to stun the home fans.
81' GOOOAAALLL!!!
GARETH McAULEY
79' REDS CHANGE
Philippe Coutinho comes on for his Liverpool debut in place of Stewart Downing.
78' SAVED BY FOSTER
Ben Foster is having one of those evenings as he dives to his left to stop Steven Gerrard's right-foot strike from going in. A superb stop!
77' PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL
Luis Suarez is pushed in the back by Jonas Olsson and referee Jon Moss does not hesitate in pointing to the spot.
76' BAGGIES CHANGE
Romelu Lukaku replaces Graham Dorrans as Steve Clarke makes a positive change to his XI. That means a change of formation as the Belgian will now support Shane Long in attack.
75' TWO ALBION BOOKINGS
James Morrison was yellow carded after kicking the ball away, so he becomes the third player to go into referee Jon Moss' book. And that soon becomes four as Chris Brunt brings down Luis Suarez in a dangerous position, just outside the box.
73' SUPER SAVE
Liverpool have had 14 attempts at goal, compared to zero from West Brom. And another one as Ben Foster is at full stretch to deny Steven Gerrard's strike with a wonderful parry and Fabio Borini fails to put the rebound in.
71' BORINI BELTER
Fabio Borini works an angle on the edge of the area and his thumping left-foot strike is well held by Ben Foster. Moments later Liam Ridgewell is booked by referee Jon Moss after bringing down the pacey Raheem Sterling.
69' NINTH CORNER
Liverpool win their ninth corner of the game and Glen Johnson's flick is headed away by Gareth McAuley. Albion have kept just one clean sheet in their last 29 Premier League away games but that was in their 1-0 win at Anfield in April 2012.
67' POOR PASSING
The Baggies seem to be growing in confidence, even though the hosts are becoming more and more dominant on the ball. Liam Ridgewell looks to play a one-two, but Youssouf Mulumbu's return pass is poor.
65' JOHNSON TRICKS
Will those changes affect the outcome of this game? Possession is dead even and Albion will be delighted with that. Glen Johnson tries to trick his way into the box with a couple of step-overs, but he overdoes it and loses the ball.
62' LIVERPOOL SUBSTITUTIONS
A double change for Liverpool then as Fabio Borini, making his first start in four months, and Raheem Sterling replace Jonjo Shelvey and Jordan Henderson.
60' THE CLASH
Brendan Rodgers is having words with his staff, wondering what to do next as they look to the bench. Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard clashes in the middle of the field with Claudio Yacob. That brings about some booing from the home fans, who believe the Argentine is wasting time.
57' JONJO JOGGING
From the resulting corner, Daniel Agger's header is off target, but Jonjo Shelvey keeps the ball alive, although he can only divert is across the face of goal. Sadly for him, the flag was up on the far side of the field, so even if it had gone it, it wouldn't have counted.
54' GOOD REACTIONS
Glen Johnson's right-wing cross forces Jordan Henderson into improvising his effort at goal with his heel, but once again, Ben Foster is alert to the danger.
52' DOUBLE BLOCK
Stewart Downing's double effort is well blocked and then Ben Foster is out like a shot at the feet of skipper Steven Gerrard. The threat by the home side is mounting.
49' SOLID CARRA
Chris Brunt's shot is blocked, but the ball falls to Liam Ridgewell and his cross is cut out by Jamie Carragher, who has been playing at the top of his game in the last couple of matches.
48' CUT OUT
Liverpool are attacking the famous Kop end, who will be urging them to come forward and attack Albion. Glen Johnson's cross drifts out for a goalkick. Youssouf Mulumbu's attempted through ball is well cut out by Daniel Agger.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
West Brom are attempting to beat Liverpool home and away in the same season for the first time since 1966-67 and they're doing very well so far, even though it's goalless as the second half gets underway. They will surely feel they can sneak a smash and grab win here. However, the home defence is the best in the Premier League this season, allowing just ten goals in 12 matches at Anfield.
45' STALEMATE AT ANFIELD
West Brom will be pleased that this game is still goalless at Anfield. Liverpool have created the better chances with Stewart Downing a real threat, while Luis Suarez has had a few efforts off target. Daniel Agger came closest with a header which was well saved by the busy Ben Foster. Baggies defender Jonas Olsson has been immense for Steve Clarke's side. Let's hope for better in the second period!
45' HALF-TIME
Referee Jon Moss blows his whistle for the end of the half and it's goalless at Anfield.
45' ADDED TIME
Just one added minute of stoppage time at the end of this first-half as Liverpool attack again, but Glen Johnson's cross is cut out well by Ben Foster.
44' REID BOOKED
Steven Reid is shown a yellow card after sliding in on Luis Suarez right in front of both benches. Not the best last couple of minutes for the West Brom defender.
43' LUCKY REID
Liverpool pass the ball around the back, before picking up the pace. Jonjo Shelvey's low cross is very nearly turned into his own net by the relieved Steven Reid. The ball spun up in the air before looping onto the roof of the net. How lucky!
40' WILD THING
The atmosphere is very flat, which is very unlike Anfield. A goal would of course change everything, but Albion have defended well. Saying that, they allow Luis Suarez to move into a gap in front of the backline, but the Uruguayan lashes his wild left-foot shot over the crossbar.
37' LET OFF
At the other end West Brom win a corner of their own although Liverpool get away with it, despite clearing the initial corner as Graham Dorrans fails to make the most of his opportunity by miscontrolling the ball.
35' AGGER MISERY
Luis Suarez gets away from the backline, but only momentarily, as his second touch lets him down and Jonas Olsson comes across to concede the corner. Liverpool play it short for Glen Johnson to cross and Daniel Agger is left all alone in the six-yard box, but the Dane fails to get the all-important touch, which surely would have put his side ahead.
32' GOOD DEFENDING
Youssouf Mulumbu's dangerous cross from the right is missed by a number of players in the area. Meanwhile, Stewart Downing wins his side yet another corner. His left-foot delivery is headed away by the busy Gareth McAuley, who is working hard at the back for Steve Clarke's men.
30' CARRA SHACKLES BRUNT
Chris Brunt attempts to get to the byline, but Jamie Carragher uses all his experience to make sure he runs the ball out of play. Both players almost go over the advertising hoardings behind the goal.
28' DOWNING DRIVE
Stewart Downing is playing well for Liverpool and he tests Ben Foster with a fierce drive from 25 yards. The Albion goalkeeper can only parry the ball up in the air before catching it at the second attempt.
25' AGGER CLOSE
Stewart Downing bursts past Youssouf Mulumbu down the right before winning his side a corner. The ball is delivered with pace, but Daniel Agger fails to direct it towards it's intended target and Albion are let off the hook.
23' OLSSON CLIMBING
West Brom win a rare corner, but Jonas Olsson is penalised for climbing above his marker and referee Jon Moss awards Liverpool the free-kick.
21' PRESSURE MOUNTING
A Stewart Downing shot is deflected behind for a Liverpool corner. The ball is sent into the box and Luis Suarez produces some outrageous skill, before he is eventually crowded out. The Reds are tightening their grip on this game.
18' NEAT FOOTBALL
Steven Gerrard finds space inbetween the lines and he finds Luis Suarez, who in turn picks out Stewart Downing, but his cross is headed out of the danger zone by Gareth McAuley in the six-yard box.
16' HEAVY CLASH
Interestingly, Peter Odemwingie has made the trip to Anfield and is on the bench watching the action even though he's not in the matchday squad. Obviously showing his commitment to the club! Meanwhile, Jonas Olsson and Steven Reid are recovering after colliding with each other as they both attempted to head away the ball.
14' LASHED WIDE
Luis Suarez picks up possession and immediately turns and runs at West Brom's defenders. However, although he is dispossessed, the ball runs kindly into the path of Steven Gerrard, but he can only thump his right-foot effort wide of the far post.
11' NO GOAL
The flag is up again and Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster is a relieved man. He pushes out a cracking effort from Glen Johnson from the edge of the area, but only to the waiting Jonjo Shelvey, who slots the ball home, but he was clearly standing in an offside position.
9' OFFSIDE DECISIONS
Youssouf Mulumbu plays a neat pass inside looking for Shane Long, but the flag goes up. The same thing happens to Liverpool at the other end as Albion hold a good line and Luis Suarez is caught this time.
7' WILD SHOT
Steven Gerrard hits one of his special crossfield passes aimed at Stewart Downing, but it is cut out and the ball falls kindly into the path of Luis Suarez who strikes it harmlessly wide of Ben Foster's goal.
5' COMPOSED START
West Brom have made a very assured start to this clash with the Anfield crowd already quietened. Lucas is playing his 200th Liverpool game, while Glen Johnson is making his 100th league appearance for the club. Liam Ridgewell's cross is well caught by Pepe Reina.
3' SAME SYSTEMS
Both teams have lined up with a 4-2-3-1 formation, so Steve Clarke's idea is to go man-to-man on Liverpool and try and nullify their attacking threat. Brendan Rodgers expects a big performance from Jonjo Shelvey in the middle of the park, as the England international makes a rare start tonight. Remember, this is eighth against ninth, but Albion have not won a match since December.
1' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Liverpool are in their traditonal all-red kit this evening. The weather is a little blustery but, but the Anfield pitch is in superb condition while the Kop are in full voice. Albion - wearing their navy blue and white striped shirts, white shorts and socks - have failed to win any of their last 18 top-flight away matches on a Monday and they have yet to keep an away clean sheet this season which will be music to the ears of Brendan Rodgers.
0' TEAM NEWS
Brendan Rodgers makes one change to the Reds side that drew 2-2 at Manchester City last weekend as Jonjo Shelvey comes in for his first start since Boxing Day as Daniel Sturridge is out with a thigh injury. New signing Philippe Coutinho is on the bench and could come on for his debut if called upon. Meanwhile, Steve Clarke makes two changes to the team that lost 1-0 to Tottenham eight days ago. Youssouf Mulumbu makes his first Premier League appearance since New Year's Day. The DR Congo international has recovered from the knee problem he battled with during the African Cup of Nations. The man to make way is Romelu Lukaku, who is among the substitutes. Liam Ridgewell comes in at left-back in place of the suspended Goran Popov, who serves the first of his three-game ban for spitting while wantaway striker Peter Odemwingie is not included in the squad.

0' MATCH PREVIEW
Liverpool will be seeking revenge after an opening day defeat at the hands of West Brom in this reverse fixture at Anfield. Brendan Rodgers' side still harbour hopes of stealing fourth, but they will need an unbeaten, winning run to succeed in the final 13 games of the season. They are currently 12 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, but have endured just one defeat in the last six Premier League games and they have kept five clean sheets in their past six league games at Anfield, including the last three in a row. The Reds have also picked up valuable draws on their last two road games against Manchester City and Arsenal. Meanwhile, victory for West Brom would help them leapfrog their opponents into eight spot. The bad news is that Steve Clarke's side have kept just one clean sheet in 29 away games, and they have lost five and won none of their last six Premier League matches. However, they did record a 1-0 win at Anfield in April 2012, and are somewhat of a bogey team for the hosts.
0' RODGERS' CARRA TRIBUTE
With defender Jamie Carragher hanging up his boots at the end of the season, Rodgers admits he will be 'irreplaceable' at the club. He said: "In the modern game there are very few like him. You see a lot of rash defending now throughout the game. This is a guy who's a pure defender, he defends with great intelligence. He knows when to mark a man, when to mark the space. He understands the basic principles of defending. For me, he'll be irreplaceable. I don't think that type can been replaced."
0' CLARKE MOVING ON
Head coach Clarke says he is ready to move on following the controversy surrounding striker Peter Odemwingie after he tried to orchestrate a deadline-day move to Queens Park Rangers, despite not receiving permission from the club. "I don't think you can say everything is back to normal because what happened, the whole episode, is something that didn't need to happen," he said in a press conference. "I'm really pleased the club have come out with this statement because it gives me the chance as a head coach to move on. That's what myself and the players need to do."
0' EARLY LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWS
Reds striker Daniel Sturridge will be assessed and maybe given a late fitness test to see if he can play some sort of role against the Baggies. The England international pulled out of the midweek friendly against Brazil with a thigh problem sustained in last weekend's draw at Manchester City. Winger Raheem Sterling, who also withdrew from international duty, is fit while new signing Philippe Coutinho has had his first week of training after his move from Inter Milan but may require more time.
0' EARLY WEST BROM TEAM NEWS
Albion left-back Goran Popov will start a three-match suspension after being sent off for spitting at Tottenham defender Kyle Walker, but midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu is in contention to return to the starting lineup for the first time since 1 January after returning to training this week following a knee problem. West Brom boss Clarke has to decide whether to recall striker Peter Odemwingie, who was left out against Spurs after the collapse of his transfer deadline day move to Queens Park Rangers.
0' MATCH OFFICIALS
The referee in charge of this encounter is Jon Moss from Tyne and Wear. The 42-year-old has taken charge of 13 matches this season, showing one red and 37 yellows. He will be joined by assistants Mick McDonough and Richard West down the flanks, while the fourth official on the touchline is Martin Atkinson.
