Arsenal vs. Aston Villa
Minute Commentary
90' CAZORLA BRACE INSPIRES ARSENAL
Arsenal move to within a point of their north London rivals Tottenham in fourth spot after a much-needed 2-1 victory against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium after a turbulent week for Arsene Wenger's men. Santi Cazorla proved to be the hero with a double to secure the points. The Spain international scored the only goal of what proved to be a pulsating opening 45 minutes. His initial left-foot cross-shot was cleared straight back to him by defender Nathan Baker and he calmly slotted away his right-foot effort past a crowd of defenders and an unsighted Brad Guzan. However, the visitors came out fighting and deservedly restored parity after 68 minutes thanks to a wonder strike from Andreas Weimann following a quick-fire break. Arsenal were not to be denied the three points though and a late onslaught on the Villa goal resulted in Cazorla bagging the winner with five minutes remaining as he slotted home Nacho Monreal's cross from the left for his 11th goal of the season. The result means Paul Lambert's side drop back into the bottom three.
90' FULL-TIME
That it! Referee Martin Atkinson blows his whistle for the end of the game and Arsenal have beaten Aston Villa 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.
90' FINAL CHANGE
Theo Walcott is the man being sacrificed as Laurent Koscielny comes on for him. Arsene Wenger is desperate for his side to hold onto this lead.
90' WELL GRABBED
Wojciech Szczesny grabs the ball after Matthew Lowton looks to find Christian Benteke in the area. At the other end Theo Walcott's shot is well held by Brad Guzan as we enter stoppage-time. We've got an extra FOUR minutes of that.
86' ARSENAL AHEAD AGAIN
The pressure was unrelenting and Aston Villa eventually crumble. Jack Wilshere picks out Nacho Monreal with a delicious pass over the top and the full-back crosses for that man again Santi Cazorla to slot home his second goal of the game from twelve-yards. Massive relief on the touchline for Arsene Wenger!
85' GOOOAAALLL!!!
SANTI CAZORLA
84' ANOTHER CHANGE
The on loan Tottenham midfielder Simon Dawkins comes on in place of Charles N'Zogbia as Paul Lambert looks to hold on to what he has got. A vital point in their battle against the drop.
82' OFF THE CROSSBAR
Theo Walcott's cross from the left is headed against the crossbar by striker Olivier Giroud. Brad Guzan may have got a slight touch. If he did, then that was a stunning stop!
80' SOLID DEFENDING
Karim El Ahmadi gets Charles N'Zogbia going down the right but Nacho Monreal gets across his man to clear his lines. At the other end Theo Walcott runs at Matthew Lowton and the defender has to concede a corner.
78' ATTACKING CHANGE
Lukas Podolski comes on for full-back Carl Jenkinson as Arsene Wenger decides to change the system and go for three points.
75' FACE OF CONCERN
There is a look of worry over the face of under-fire Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger with his side looking vunerable every time they lose possession in the Villa half.
73' VILLA REPLACEMENT
Karim El Ahmadi comes on for Ashley Westwood in a like-for-like change. Villa win a corner as Christian Benteke's backpost header deflects off an Arsenal defender.
69' CRACKING EQUALISER
Talk about classic counter-attack! Aston Villa have equalised at the Emirates Stadium thanks to a stunning strike from Andreas Weimann. Charles N'Zogbia found the Austrian international in space and he lashed his 25 yard right-foot cracker past goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who maybe should have done better.
68' GOOOAAALLL!!!
ANDREAS WEIMANN
67' DELPH BOOKED
Fabian Delph's forceful tackle brings him a yellow card as referee Martin Atkinson takes the card out of his pocket.
66' LOTS OF PRESSURE
Arsenal win a free-kick in a central position but Santi Cazorla's effort strikes the wall. The north Londoners keep up the pressure and Carl Jenkinson's low ball into the box is missed by the sliding Olivier Giroud.
63' DIABY INJURY
Arsene Wenger is forced into a change. Abou Diaby is replaced by Aaron Ramsey after the Frenchman picks up what looks like a thigh injury. This is Ramsey's 18th appearance from the bench for the Gunners.
61' OFF TARGET
Christian Benteke gets away down the right and his cross looks to find the towering Gabby Agbonlahor in the area, but the striker's header is off target.
59' ARSENAL CORNERS
Santi Cazorla's strike from just outside the box takes a slight deflection and has Brad Guzan scrambling across his goal to make the save. Moments later, Jack Wilshere's right-foot strike deflects over the crossbar for another corner but the USA international eventually gathers.
57' GUNNERS PRESSURE
Nathan Baker slides in to concede a corner, but the ball in clears a number of players in the area. At the other end Matthew Lowton loses possession of the ball in a bad position, allowing Arsenal to counter-atack.
54' IMPORTANT BLOCK
Matthew Lowton makes an important but painful block from Olivier Giroud's attempted cross. That was a sore one for the young full-back.
52' SELFISH GIROUD
Olivier Giroud finds space down the left but instead of picking out an unmarked Jack Wilshere in the middle he opts to go for goal. The ball flies hopelessly over the crossbar from a tight angle and the home supporters show their disgust at the Frenchman's decision making.
50' CLARK CLOSE
Villa soon win another corner on the other side of the pitch and this time Ashley Westwood's outswinger is headed over the crossbar by an unmarked Ciaran Clark. The defender scored a brace against the Gunners a couple of seasons ago, but couldn't add to his tally against them on this ocassion.
48' QUICK START
This refreshing approach by Aston Villa continues at the start of this second half as they win an early corner after good work by Gabby Agbonlahor. Charles N'Zogbia's ball into the box is into Andreas Weimann but it bounces towards Christian Benteke who fails to find the finish.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Victory for Arsene Wenger's men would send them to within a point of their north-London rivals Tottenham, who currently occupy that fourth spot. Andre-Villas Boas' side are not in action until Monday night at West Ham. Meanwhile, if Villa were to come from behind and win this clash they would climb level on points with 16th-placed Newcastle with the Magpies in action at home to Southampton on Sunday. However, defeat could see them drop back into the bottom three depending on the result in the match between Reading and Wigan.
45' CAZORLA LEADS THE WAY
Santi Cazorla scored the only goal of what proved to be a pulsating opening 45 minutes at the Emirates Stadium. The Spain international's initial left-foot cross-shot was cleared straight back to him by defender Nathan Baker and he calmly slotted away his right-foot effort past a crowd of defenders and past goalkeeper Brad Guzan for this 10th goal of the season. The last time Villa kept a clean sheet was 16 games ago. They came close to restoring parity through Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor, but it's still all to play for in the second half.
45' HALF-TIME
A familiar scoreline as Arsenal lead 1-0 in a high-tempo affair at the Emirates Stadium as referee Martin Atkinson blows his whistle.
45' ACTION PACKED
A super 60 seconds of action as firstly Andreas Weimann does really well to break but Carl Jenkinson proves too strong for him, while at the other end Olivier Giroud's low drive is superbly blocked. We have TWO added minutes of stoppage time.
43' ANGLE TOO TIGHT
Olivier Giroud plays a neat one-two before being pushed wide of goal and his acute effort from close to the byline drifts out of play with a Villa defender standing on the line just in case.
41' UNCONVINCING DEFENDING
Carl Jenkinson's cross hits Nathan Baker with Jack Wilshere claiming that the ball hit him on the arm but referee Martin Atkinson was standing in a good position and waved play on.
39' DIABY BOOKED
Abou Diaby - playing just his 10th league game of the season today - is booked after a cynical challenge on Charles N'Zogbia in the middle of the park.
38' YELLOW CARD
Matthew Lowton overruns the ball and then slides into the challenge on Thomas Vermaelen. Referee Martin Atkinson is given no option but to book the defender.
36' TAME EFFORT
Nacho Monreal picks up the ball in the area and he cuts on the outside before looking to beat Brad Guzan at his near post, but his effort was pretty tame.
35' RAMPAGING RUN
Santi Cazorla looks to find Theo Walcott with a big diagonal pass but it drifts out for a goal-kick. Carl Jenkinson bursts out of defence with a powerful run before Joe Bennett eventually clears.
32' END-TO-END
Sloppy football by Abou Diaby allows Andreas Weimann to counter-attack and he finds Charles N'Zogbia in space but he's well tackled and now Arsenal look to break. It comes to Jack Wilshere who looks to curl his left-footer into the far post, but it was always travelling wide.
29' CREDIT TO VILLA
Credit has to go to Paul Lambert for playing such an open and expansive style away from home. They have only lost one of their last six away games which is maybe why they've been so confident in possession of the ball today. Olivier Giroud fells Gabby Agbonlahor in the centre circle.
27' SZCZESNY TO THE RESCUE
Andreas Weimann breaks away down the right again and he gets into a fantastic position to pick out Charles N'Zogbia in the middle but Wojciech Szczesny comes to the rescue with a stunning stop at his near post.
25' GOALS CONCEDED
Following that early goal by Santi Cazorla, Villa have been the more dangerous side on the break and have created the better chances. Sadly for them, they have now let in 32 goals away from home which is more than any other top flight side on their travels.
24' WHAT A CROSS
Matthew Lowton delivers a stunning cross from the right-wing but 15 goal man Christian Benteke fails to make a decent connection on the ball. Even if it had gone in, it wouldn't have counted because the big Belgian was standing in an offside position.
21' ZOG DOWN INJURED
Charles N'Zogbia goes to ground following a very innocuous challenge just outside the area. The Villa playmaker is receiving some medical attention before slowly getting to his feet.
19' RECOVERY TACKLE
Arsenal are finding it difficult to pick out Gabby Agbonlahor who is finding space inbetween the lines. Nathan Baker makes a great recovery tackle to deny Mikel Arteta the opportunity to get his shot away as the Gunners hit Villa on the counter-attack.
16' GABBY COMES CLOSE
Theo Walcott's cross is headed out of the danger zone by Nathan Baker at the near post. At the other end Andreas Weimann's right-wing cross very nearly picks out the unmarked Gabby Agbonlahor in the six-yard box after the Brummie-born striker had started the move.
13' OPEN AND ATTACKING
The game is open and both teams are looking to attack and score goals. I did say there would be goals at the Emirates Stadium today didn't I? Now, Arsenal are back in possession of the ball as Jack Wilshere looks to find Theo Walcott but Joe Bennett steps in the way.
10' SUPER STOP
Aston Villa respond as they break through Charles N'Zogbia down the right. The winger then finds Gabby Agbonlahor in space on the edge of the box before his shot is parried away by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
6' PERFECT START
A moment of great relief for Arsenal's underfire manager Arsene Wenger as Santi Cazorla's initial shot was cleared straight back to him by Nathan Baker allowing the Spaniard to strike his right-foot shot past Brad Guzan in the far corner for this 10th goal of the season.
5' GOOOAAALLL!!!
SANTI CAZORLA
5' WILSHERE CHANCE
Arsenal have their foot on the ball as they look to prize open that Aston Villa defence. Abou Diaby's cross sails over the bar but moments later Jack Wilshere is put in the clear but he's denied by a fine stop from American shot-stopper Brad Guzan from close-range as the England man closed down on him.
3' ATTACKING SET-UP
Villa U18s won 6-1 against Arsenal at London Colney today. I wonder what price the same scorleine for the fist XI this afternoon? Villa have only won two of their last 28 meetings against the Gunners in north London. Paul Lambert's side have picked up four points from their last two league games though, so come here in good form. Both sides are set up in an attacking fashion, so we should get a few goals I think.
1' WE'RE UNDERWAY
Here we go then at a packed Emirates Stadium in north London. Arsenal are wearing their traditional red and white home kit while Aston Villa are in their luminous green number today. This is the 186th meeting between the long time foes, with the Gunners holding an edge winning 75 times to Villa's 65. There have been 45 draws between the sides. The pitch is in immaculate condition as usual while the weather is mild this afternoon. Let's hope for a cracking contest ladies and gentlemen.
0' ARSENAL TEAM NEWS
Gunners defender Nacho Monreal is available again after injury and comes into the starting line-up in place of Laurent Koscielny. Two other changes sees Carl Jenkinson and Abou Diaby replace Bacary Sagna and Lukas Podolski.
0' VILLA TEAM NEWS
Skipper Ron Vlaar has been ruled out through injury which means a reshuffle at the back with Joe Bennett coming in at full-back and Nathan Baker slotting in alongside Ciaran Clark in central-defence. Charles N'Zogbia has recovered from a thigh injury to start along with striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, while midfielder Karim El Ahmadi has to settle for a place on the bench.

0' MATCH PREVIEW
The last seven days can only be described as 'annus horribilis' for Arsenal football club and their manager Arsene Wenger. The pressure has been mounting on the Frenchman after his side were dumped out of the FA Cup by Championship side Blackburn - before suffering a second successive home defeat - this time to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday. They'll be desperate to put things right against Aston Villa today, despite a tubulent week in which Wenger's future at the club has been questioned by the club's supporters and the media. The last time they lost three successive home matches was in 2002 although they are unbeaten in their last 13 league matches played in the month of February. Villa head into this clash having ended an eight-match winless streak with victory over West Ham last time out. However, with nearest rivals Reading and Wigan meeting on Saturday, defeat at Emirates Stadium could see Paul Lambert's side enter the bottom three once again.
0' WENGER BELIEVES IN TEAM
The Gunners boss is aware that his side are lacking in confidence, but feels they can get back on track against Villa today. "I feel that we lack a little bit of belief and confidence and you could see that," he said. "When you look at the numbers we are 10th in the league in the first half and top of the league in the second half. That shows we have not a problem of quality, we have a problem of belief and confidence, and that is noticeable especially in the first half. What is important for me is to focus on the next game and try to give my best, like all the players."
0' EARLY ARSENAL TEAM NEWS
Bacary Sagna misses out for Arsenal. The France international full-back has a knee problem and will not be available. Kieran Gibbs remains out with a thigh injury but fellow defender Nacho Monreal is available again for the Gunners.
0' VILLA RARING TO GO
Lambert and striker Gabby Agbonlahor are relishing the game at the Emirates and both believe the two-week break has done them 'the world of good'. The Scot said: "Because we beat West Ham, it's been good. We have worked with the lads and it's been good. The break has done us the world of good. It gets people refreshed, there's time to enjoy the win and now the next game is on." Meanwhile, Agbonlahor says the camp is buzzing: "We have had a chance to recharge the batteries. Everyone is fresh so hopefully that can help on Saturday. With the two-week break, everyone is raring to go. We know it's going to be tough but the results we've picked up over the past few weeks, we can go there with confidence."
0' EARLY VILLA TEAM NEWS
Villa playmaker Charles N'Zogbia has recovered from a thigh injury and is expected to start. Striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and midfielder Karim El Ahmadi are also available after illness ruled them out of the 2-1 win against West Ham last time out. Defender Chris Herd (foot) is also poised to return to training next week but winger Marc Albrighton (foot) and defender Richard Dunne (groin) are still ruled out.
0' MATCH OFFICIALS
The referee in charge of this encounter is Martin Atkinson. The 41-year-old from Yorkshire will be joined by assistant linemen John Flynn and Charles Breakspear, while the fourth official on the touchline is Paul Tierney.
