Fulham vs. Stoke City
Minute Commentary
90' FT: FULHAM 1 STOKE 0
Fulham ease whatever lingering relegation fears they might have had with a deserved victory over a Stoke side whose dismal away form continues. It needed something special to break the deadlock and it came from the imperious Dimitar Berbatov, who beat Asmir Begovic with a wonderful first-time volley in first-half stoppage time to make his 200th Premier League appearance all the more memorable. The home side totally dominated the opening period and were worth at least their single goal advantage. Stoke, though, were much more of a threat after the break and will look back at two golden chances which they failed to take. The first fell the way of Peter Crouch after a mistake by Philippe Senderos, but the England striker was denied by a fine instinctive save from Mark Schwarzer. Fulham's Australia goalkeeper then made an excellent stop to keep out a penalty by Jonathan Walters, awarded after a handball from Ashkan Dejagah. It's now just one win in 23 away from home for the men from the Potteries and they will be grateful for the points they amassed earlier in the season which should just about keep them out of trouble.
90' PETRIC SHOOTS OVER
Petric has a knack of scoring after coming off the bench, but not this time as he cuts in off the right wing and blasts into the crowd.
90' FULHAM SUBSTITUTION
Goal-scoring hero Dimitar Berbatov makes way for Mladen Petric with two minutes remaining.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
There will be a minimum of four minutes of added time.
89' STILL HOPE FOR STOKE?
Martin Jol's side have surrendered 18 points from winning positions - only Reading (20) and Southampton (24) have fared worse. Time is running out for Stoke, though.
86' FULHAM SUBSTITUTION
Here comes another Fulham change. It's Dutchman Urby Emanuelson for Duff.
85' CASE FOR THE DEFENCE
Fulham kept their first clean sheet in 12 games last time out at Norwich. They're now on course for two in a row.
82' FULHAM SUBSTITUTION
Sidwell drags a shot wide before Fulham make a switch. Karagounis gets a great ovation as he makes way for Chris Baird.
79' RUIZ IS A TRICKY CUSTOMER
Ruiz produces some wonderful skill to get the better of Shawcross down the left, but Berbatov is left flat-footed when the final pass comes his way and Stoke escape as Sidwell's shot it diverted behind for a corner.
76' STOKE BOOKING
Shawcross is shown the yellow card for a late challenge on Karagounis. That is his seventh caution of the season. Three more and it's a two-match ban.
74' JUST OVER FROM KARAGOUNIS
Fulham work a neat short corner and Karagounis cuts in off the wing before sending a sweetly-struck right-foot shot that is only just over the crossbar.
71' STOKE SUBSTITUTION
Kenwyne Jones replaces Peter Crouch. That's the last switch for Stoke.
69' HUTH ESCAPES PUNISHMENT
Hangeland and Crouch are both left rubbing their heads after an accidental clash. Replays also catch a forearm to the face of Senderos by Huth at a corner which went unpunished and unseen by Mr Probert.
67' RIISE GOES CLOSE
Riise dummies his way inside past Shotton and tries a measured shot with the outside of his left foot. It doesn't quite have enough curl to bring it back inside the post, but it was a terrific effort.
65' GOOD DEFENDING FROM DEJAGAH
Shotton delivers an excellent cross from wide on the right, but Dejagah does equally well to track back and get in a clearing header at the back-post with Crouch waiting hopefully behind him.
63' UNHAPPY TIMES FOR WALTERS
Jon Walters also missed from the penalty spot against Chelsea recently. Look on the bright side, though, at least he hasn't scored two own goals today!
62' ONLY JUST WIDE FROM SHEA
A first-time angled drive from Shea has Schwarzer scrambling across his goal, but the effort is just wide of the far upright.
60' EXCELLENT STOP FROM BEGOVIC
Begovic makes a superb save to his left after some more exquisite skill from Berbatov sets up the Bulgarian for a left-footed shot. Crouch heads over at the other end.
57' PENALTY MISS
Stoke have a penalty after Dejagah blocks a cross from Shea with his arm. It's the correct decision. Walters sees his low penalty wonderfully well saved by Schwarzer, diving to his right.
54' WASTED FREE-KICK
Whelan is pushed in the back by Karagounis only just outside the box and Stoke have a free-kick in an excellent position. The angle favours a left-footer, but Whelan takes it himself and curls an effort straight into the wall.
52' STOKE SUBSTITUTION
Here comes Jerome, taking the place of Cameron. Stoke will now play with two up front and Walters will play wide on the right.
51' OPTIONS ON THE BENCH
Stoke have made no further changes at the break, but they do have plenty of attacking options on the bench with the likes of Charlie Adam, Cameron Jerome and Kenwyne Jones.
49' WHAT A SAVE BY SCHWARZER
Mark Schwarzer makes a blinding save to deny Peter Crouch, who had been allowed to get clean through after a monumental blunder by Senderos.
47' ANOTHER SHOT BLOCKED
Fulham have started on the front foot again and Karagounis sees his fierce drive cannon to safety off a defender.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Fulham get the second half under way.
45' HT: FULHAM 1 STOKE 0
Fulham lead at the break thanks for that piece of brilliance in first-half stoppage time and there is no doubt they deserve their advantage, which could have been greater. Asmir Begovic made one excellent save to keep out a Giorgos Karagounis free-kick and has been called into action on a number of other occasions to keep the Stoke goal intact. The visitors started brightly and could have taken an early lead had Jon Walters teed up Matthew Etherington instead of dithering on the ball. The major talking point, though, was Steven Nzonzi escaping a dismissal after thrusting his arm into the face of Bryan Ruiz. Mr Probert took a lenient view but on most days Stoke would have been left playing three quarters of the match with ten men.
45' GOAL: FULHAM 1 STOKE 0
Dimitar Berbatov puts Fulham in front with a stunning volley! Huth headed away Riether's right-wing cross, but the Bulgarian dispatched his shot into the top corner from 14 yards out.
45' TOO HIGH FROM DEJAGAH
Berbatov shows some lovely skill to bring the ball down before finding Dejagah, whose ambitious lob from 40 yards goes well over.
45' WIDE FROM SIDWELL
Sidwell then plays a neat one-two with Dejagah, but drags his shot wide of the upright. Two minutes of stoppage time.
43' RIISE SHOT BLOCKED
Riise volleys goalwards from 25 yards out, wide on the left, but the excellent Shawcross gets a foot in the way.
41' CAMERON PUSHING FORWARD
Just a note for fantasy football fans: with the return of Wilson meaning that Stoke have five defenders in their side, it has been Geoff Cameron who has been pushed into a more advanced right-sided midfield position in the first half.
39' TIGHT AT THE BACK
Stoke have gone eight league games without a clean sheet, conceding 18 goals. They kept nine clean sheets in their opening 18 league games, so Tony Pulis has to be happy with the defensive effort from his side so far today, if not their lack of creativity in the final third.
36' STOKE BOOKING
Wilson catches Dejagah with a mistimed tackle and is the second Stoke player to be cautioned.
34' ESCAPE FOR STOKE
Nzonzi gives the ball away in a dangerous position, but Berbatov's back-heel just does not have enough pace to find its final target of Ruiz and Stoke escape.
31' LANDMARK APPEARANCE
Dimitar Berbatov today becomes the first Bulgarian to make 200 Premier League appearances. He has netted 83 goals in those games, not a bad return, though it obviously helps having spent the bulk of his career at Old Trafford.
28' BACK PROBLEM FOR ETHERINGTON
Etherington has a back injury, apparently, which forced his withdrawal.
27' HEADER OVER FROM RUIZ
Senderos hangs a cross into the middle and Ruiz rises impressively, but heads well over the crossbar.
26' STOKE SUBSTITUTION
The injury-prone Etherington is replaced by American Brek Shea.
25' LUCKY TO ESCAPE A RED CARD
Nzonzi is extremely lucky only to receive a yellow card for thrusting an arm into the face of Ruiz for no reason. That should have been red in my book. From the free-kick a dipping effort from Karagounis is tipped over by Begovic.
23' BULLIES BEING BULLIED
It's a bit ironic that a Stoke player was the one in need of treatment in the light of Martin Jol's remarks that his side were bullied in the earlier meeting between the sides this season.
21' COTTAGERS CREATING CHANCES
Fulham threaten again, with Sidwell laying the ball off to Duff, whose left-foot drive thuds into the chest of Huth. Moments later, Riise's low drive is comfortably held by Begovic.
18' PLAYING ON IN PAIN
Nzonzi has returned to the pitch, but there's little doubt in my book he has a fracture across the bridge of his nose. He's a brave lad to continue.
16' WELL DONE REFEREE
Nzonzi loses his temper at the unjustified abuse he is getting from the Fulham crowd. Mr Probert sensibly puts an arm round the player rather than producing a yellow card. That's good refereeing.
14' NZONZI IN THE WARS
Nzonzi has caught an accidental arm in the face from Berbatov and may have broken his nose, looking at how much pain he is in.
12' FULHAM BOOKING
The ball is in the net, but it has been placed there, Diego Maradona-style, by Ruiz. Yellow card for the Costa Rican for handball.
10' BERBATOV NOT FAR AWAY
Back come Fulham. Riether's cross drops to Berbatov, who volleys over the bar from close range under pressure from Shawcross.
8' WASTED BY WALTERS
Stoke mount a real threat. Walters escapes his man down the right and delays his pass too long with Etherington unmarked in the middle. When the ball finally arrives Schwarzer palms it to safety.
6' EARLY FREE-KICK
Stoke win an early free-kick. Etherington's delivery from the left is cleared by Senderos to the edge of the area, from where Whelan volleys well wide of the post.
4' WAY OVER FROM RUIZ
Bryan Ruiz obviously has confidence in his own ability, as he tries a shot from 35 yards. It's little surprise to see the effort sail into the crowd.
3' EARLY EFFORT FROM RIISE
Shotton is caught in possession by Riise, who lashes a first-time shot over the bar. It wouldn't have counted, Mr Probert had spotted a handball.
2' WEATHER REPORT
There's certainly a nip in the air at Craven Cottage, but none of the white stuff, we are glad to report. Conditions are perfect for football, let's hope we get an entertaining match.
1' HERE WE GO
Stoke kick off, attacking the goal to our left.

0' PREVIEW
Stoke take their dreadful away record to Craven Cottage for the Saturday lunchtime kick-off with Fulham in what is a somewhat surprising choice as one of round 27's showpiece televised games in the Premier League. The Potters have won just once in 22 league outings on the road – at West Brom in December – and striker Jonathan Walters says it is about time they did something about it. “I didn't realise the away record was that bad,” Walters told Sky Sports. “It would be something nice to improve on. Well, we can only improve on it really. But there's no (psychological) barrier. We don't go into any game thinking anything except trying to get a result. The Stoke fans spend a lot of money and they are working-class people, so it would be nice to give them a win on the road.” Fulham have been mired in their own poor run of late and but for the home win over West Ham three weeks ago would be well and truly embroiled in the fight for survival. It's quite fitting we are in the midst of Six Nations rugby this time of year, because the last time these two sides met, Fulham manager Martin Jol compared Stoke to those practitioners with the oval ball. “It's their style and I admire their style, but it's almost a rugby team,” were his exact words to the BBC in a post-match interview, which probably didn't go down too well with Tony Pulis and Co. With another cold snap upon us, there's every chance one of the visitors' up-and-unders could literally come down with snow on it this afternoon. There will certainly be a clash of styles on view, but with two sides both lacking in confidence a draw would not be an unexpected result. Today's game kicks off at 1245GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
The enigmatic Dimitar Berbatov may be 32 but he's still a class act when in the mood and with eight goals the Bulgarian is far and away Fulham's leading scorer this season. It's also worth noting that the Cottagers have not been beaten in any of the six matches in which Berba has scored this season. Bryan Ruiz (eight assists) and Damien Duff (seven) have created the bulk of Fulham's goals this season and the evergreen Duff was rewarded for his impressive form by being handed a 12-month contract extension yesterday. It's no secret that Stoke have been short of goals and their leading scorers Peter Crouch and Jon Walters both have just five to their name. Crouch has netted once since the end of September and Walters has yet to find the net in the league in 2013, so if you're tempted by first goalscorer bets, take this advice: don't. If you absolutely must, then the head of Ryan Shawcross or Robert Huth from one of Stoke's notorious set-pieces looks the most probable route to goal.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Fulham just have the edge in head-to-head league meetings between the sides with 28 wins to 27 by Stoke and 15 games being drawn. At Craven Cottage, Fulham have 17 wins to 10 by Stoke, with a further seven meetings ending up all square. A Stoke win would give them their second league double in this fixture in four years, the Potters having won the earlier meeting between the sides at the Britannia Stadium on Nov. 24 1-0 courtesy of a 26th-minute goal from Charlie Adam. The corresponding match last season ended in a 2-1 win for Fulham. Pavel Pogrebnyak (16 mins) and an own goal from Thomas Sorensen (28) put the home side in charge and a 78th-minute reply from Ryan Shawcross proved nothing more than a consolation.
0' FORM GUIDE
Fulham start the weekend in 12th place, with 29 points from 26 matches. They have collected 18 points at home, but have lost five league games at Craven Cottage already this season. Martin Jol's men have won just three of their last 18, drawing seven and losing eight. They drew 0-0 at Norwich last time out. Stoke lie in 10th place, with 33 points, only nine of which have been earned on the road. The Potters have won just one game away from home this season and have scored eight away goals, the fewest in the division alongside West Ham. The total of 25 goals in Stoke's 13 away games (for and against) is also the fewest in the Premier League. Stoke beat Reading 2-1 at home in their last game, ending a run of six without a win, but they have lost their last three away from home. The defence that was much lauded earlier in the season has failed to keep a clean sheet in the last eight, the goalless draw at Tottenham on Dec. 22 being the last time they shut out the opposition.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Kieran Richardson has returned to training following the calf injury he sustained at Manchester City on Jan. 19 but is not quite ready for a first-team return. Sascha Riether is likely to earn a recall, though, having missed the goalless draw at Norwich a fortnight ago through illness. Mahamadou Diarra (knee) and Kerim Frei (pelvis) remain out. Stoke are set to welcome back defender Marc Wilson, who has been out since breaking his leg against Sunderland in October. January recruit Brek Shea is available for the first time since his move from FC Dallas, the winger having recovered from a foot operation. Cameron Jerome is likely to shake off a minor knee injury, but Michael Owen is doubtful after suffering a thigh problem in training.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Lee Probert, who was appointed to the Select Group Referees List in 2007. In terms of cards-per-game the Gloucestershire official was one of the most lenient in the top flight last season, producing just 44 yellow cards and four red cards in 22 matches. Probert has refereed 16 Premier League games this season, administering 48 cautions and dismissing one player, Fulham's Brede Hangeland, in the match with Sunderland at Craven Cottage. His assistants today are Stephen Child and Ron Ganfield, while Jon Moss is the fourth official.
