Manchester City vs. Chelsea
Minute Commentary
90' FT: MAN CITY 2 CHELSEA 0
Manchester City tighten their grip on second place, opening up a seven-point gap over Chelsea after an important win over their nearest chasers at the Etihad Stadium. The opening goal came on 63 minutes from Yaya Toure, who curled a well-placed shot into the corner past Petr Cech after being set up by David Silva. Substitute Carlos Tevez added the second four minutes from time with a sweetly-struck shot from outside the box. City deserved their victory, they carried the greater threat going forward and could have had more goals had Sergio Aguero's finishing in particular been more accurate. But Chelsea will feel they should have taken something from this game, with Frank Lampard being denied his 200th goal for the club thanks to a magnificent save of his penalty early in the second half from Joe Hart, who had conceded the spot-kick by rashly felling Demba Ba. Rafael Benitez's side are now looking over their shoulder and will drop to fourth if Tottenham are able to win at West Ham on Monday night.
90' CITY SUBSTITUTION
Luiz shoots over before City make their final switch. It's Joleon Lescott for Silva, who has not been outstanding but has two assists to his name.
90' CITY SUBSTITUTION
In fact, it's Aguero who makes way, with Samir Nasri coming on for the last minute.
89' ZABALETA HURTING
Zabaleta hurts his right ankle after a collision with Ramires and looks like he might have to come off.
86' GOAL: MAN CITY 2 CHELSEA 0
Carlos Tevez seals the points for City by hitting a rasping right-foot shot into the top corner from 22 yards after being set up by Silva. That's a wonderful strike.
84' TOURE SHOOTS WELL WIDE
Kolo Toure fancies his chances from 25 yards out, but the only good thing about that shot from City's perspective is that it might take a while to retrieve the ball from the stands.
82' CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Yes he is. Here comes Fernando, who takes the place of John Obi Mikel.
80' IS IT TIME FOR TORRES?
Chelsea need a saviour here. Will Rafa look in the direction of Fernando Torres? Is he that desperate?
76' CHANCE SNUFFED OUT
There is panic in the City defence for a split-second, but a sea of blue shirts regain their bearings and converge on Ivanovic to deny the Serbian a shooting chance.
73' CITY LOOKING FOR A SECOND
Milner is allowed into the Chelsea area all too easily by the Blues defence, who are relieved that Yaya Toure over-hits the return pass.
69' DOUBLE CHELSEA SUBSTITUTION
Chelsea make a double switch, with Victor Moses and Oscar replacing Lampard and Hazard.
66' BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
Going into this match City had scored 25 goals in the final half hour of Premier League matches this season, more than any other team in the top flight. That's one more to the total.
64' GOAL DETAILS
The hard-working Silva did well to keep the ball in play and laid it back to Toure, who ghosted past Mikel as if he hasn't there and slotted a curling shot around Cahill into the corner. A classy finish from the Ivorian.
63' GOAL: MAN CITY 1 CHELSEA 0
Yaya Toure gives City the lead.
60' RAMIRES DENIED
Chelsea break through the unlikely sources of Ivanovic and Ramires. In the end the Brazilian runs out of ideas and goes down under the challenge of Kolo Toure.
58' AGUERO FOILED AGAIN
A defence-splitting pass from Milner puts Aguero through again. This time he tries to lob Cech, but gets too much on the effort and it drops just the wrong side of the crossbar.
56' CAHILL AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME
Aguero takes down a delightful lofted pass from Silva with his head, but not for the first time the outstanding Cahill is right in the way of an attempt at goal.
55' CITY SUBSTITUTION
City make the first change with Carlos Tevez replacing Rodwell.
52' JUST OVER FROM CAHILL
Cahill then loops a header from a corner just over the crossbar.
51' HART SAVES LAMPARD PENALTY
Hart races out of his goal and foolishly fells Ba. City have a penalty. Up steps Lampard, but is denied his 200th Chelsea goal by a brilliant save from his England counterpart
49' EASY FOR HART
Hazard cuts in off the left wing and tests Hart at his near post with a low drive. The England goalkeeper is up to the task.
48' VOLLEY WIDE BY AGUERO
Silva escapes down the left after exchanging passes with Yaya Toure. The cross is behind Aguero, who does well to manufacture an acrobatic volley, even if it does fly wide.
46' HERE WE GO AGAIN
Chelsea get the second half under way.
45' HT: MAN CITY 0 CHELSEA 0
It's goalless at the break and although it's been nowhere near as yawn-inducing as that November meeting at Chelsea you would hardly call it a classic. City started full of attacking intent, but the final pass has let them down on too many occasions and the visitors, to be fair, have defended doggedly with Gary Cahill catching the eye. The best chance fell to City's Matija Nastasic from a right-wing corner delivered by David Silva. The Serbian's downward header was on target, but too close to Petr Cech, who made a good reaction save. We have seen little of Chelsea as an attacking force, but Rafa Benitez will be happy enough with what has been a solid display from his side.
45' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Chelsea have a four-on-four break to end the half, but Ramires over-runs the ball and gives Clichy the chance to clear for City.
44' CITY BOOKING
Zabaleta is booked for persistent fouling. His latest misdemeanour being committed on Ashley Cole.
42' CECH BEING KEPT BUSY
Rodwell lets fly from 30 yards. His effort is well struck, but too central and Cech tips over comfortably. Rodwell then heads straight at Cech from the resulting corner
41' CITY BOOKING
Kolo Toure is cautioned after catching Mata with a late tackle.
41' GOALBOUND EFFORT BLOCKED
Silva gets in down the City left and pulls a ball back for Zabaleta, who meets the cross with a fearsome right-foot volley that is heading for goal only for Cahill to get his head in the way.
39' TOURE STRUGGLING
It was just a kick on the knee for Toure. He is back on his feet but feeling very sorry for himself and not moving very freely at all.
38' CHELSEA BOOKING
Yaya Toure stays down after a foul challenge from Ramires, which earns the Brazilian a booking.
36' IS CHANGE A GOOD THING?
Chelsea have earned 25 points from 14 league matches under Rafa Benitez. They earned 24 points from 12 games under Roberto Di Matteo. He is also, how shall we put this, slightly less popular with the fans than his predecessor. Think Mr Abramovich has any regrets about his decision to wield the axe?
33' DANGEROUS SILVA CORNER
Rodwell loses his marker Mikel and is just unable to get on the end of a Silva cross delivered from the right. Set-pieces have been City's likeliest route to goal so far.
31' RODWELL HEADS OVER
Clichy delivers a hanging cross from the left, but Rodwell cannot climb high enough to get on top of his headed effort, which clears the bar.
30' CITY BOOKING
Jack Rodwell is booked for a nothing tackle on Ivanovic, who went down all too easily. That's harsh, but Mr Marriner has run out of patience and it's easier to caution an up-and-coming player rather than a petulant superstar.
28' LAMPARD SHOOTS WAY OVER
Chelsea are finally starting to get something of a foothold in this game, helped by a number of rash tackles from over-zealous City defenders. Lampard tries for his 200th goal via a 40-yard free-kick that ends up about 25 rows back in the stands.
25' GIVE US A GOAL
One reason why we are hopeful that this match will not be a repeat of November's goalless bore draw at the Bridge is that City have scored a goal in 44 straight home league games.
22' CHELSEA HANGING ON A LITTLE
Clichy does wonderfully well to beat Ivanovic down the left, but again Chelsea make an important interception to prevent the final pass from finding its man.
20' AGUERO SPURNS A GREAT CHANCE
From the ensuing City corner Cahill makes amends for losing his man by blocking Rodwell's shot. Silva then puts in Aguero, who rounds the goalkeeper but runs out of room and the ball trickles behind for a goal-kick.
18' CAHILL'S IMPORTANT HEADER
City threaten down the right again, but Cahill makes a fine clearing header to get to Zabaleta's cross in front of Aguero.
17' TEVEZ ON THE BENCH
Carlos Tevez has failed to score in his last eight league appearances, so it's not as big a surprise as it once would have been to see him start on the bench.
15' CECH EARNS HIS MONEY
Nastasic comes close to his first goal for City, heading the ball into the ground but goalwards from a left-wing corner. Cech reacts well to claw the effort away.
12' BA NOT FAR AWAY
Chelsea, mind you, have come here looking for the win and Lampard's cross is only just over the head of Demba Ba.
11' CITY CALLING THE TUNE
Milner's ball is just fractionally too long for Yaya Toure to meet it in stride, otherwise the Ivorian would have been in on goal. This has been a lively start from City.
10' LAMPARD THE CHELSEA LEGEND
Frank Lampard is making his 550th league appearance today. The England midfielder has scored 199 goals for Chelsea and is just three behind Bobby Tambling's club record.
8' CORNER WASTED BY MATA
Chelsea break at pace and Demba Ba wins the visitors their first corner. Mata delivers, but it fails to beat the first man and Zabaleta clears.
6' IMPORTANT TACKLE FROM MIKEL
Aguero makes a threatening run forward, but Mikel makes an important tackle on the edge of the area just before the Argentina frontman has the chance to get in a shot.
4' EARLY CITY CORNER
The ball flicks off the top of Ivanovic's head and City have their first corner. Mancini has obviously urged his side to make a quick start, much like the one that saw off Leeds in the FA Cup last weekend.
2' EARLY TOUCH FOR CECH
City are on the attack right from the off. Milner passes inside to Yaya Toure, whose low drive is comfortably saved by Cech.
1' HERE WE GO
City kick off, attacking the goal to our right.
0' PREVIEW
With all but a monumental collapse now standing between Manchester United and a record 20th league title, all eyes turn to who will win the fight between the also-rans for second place. Manchester City are in pole position at present, but all that could change if they slip up at home to third-placed Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Blues interim manager Rafael Benitez was in bullish mood ahead of a match that features two big-spending clubs who have punched well below their weight this season. “What I can see now is a team with confidence, we are confident we can beat City or anyone if we do things in the right way,” the Spaniard said. “The race for the top four will go on until the end of the season. Our last game is against Everton so I'm sure that, until the end of the season, we will be winning games or losing games or whatever but it will be very tight, very close.” Benitez's opposite number Roberto Mancini was in somewhat prickly mood, uttering an expletive beginning with the letter “f” in his press conference after one too many questions about his managerial future. There is pressure on both sides to get the result, but hopefully it will not result in a repeat of the stultifying goalless draw they played out at Stamford Bridge back in November, a match memorable only for the fearful stick Benitez got from his own fans in what was his first game in charge following the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo. Today's game kicks off at 1330GMT, so join us around 30 minutes beforehand when we should have the confirmed team news, which will be followed by a match commentary.
0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
City manager Roberto Mancini insinuated at his Friday press conference that Samir Nasri has been only half the player he can be this season. Nasri has indeed underperformed, but the same accusation could be levelled at any number of the flair players the champions have in their ranks. Sergio Aguero has only provided occasional flashes of the brilliance of which he is capable, Carlos Tevez has been forced into a deeper role which has not allowed him to use his attacking abilities to the full, David Silva has looked jaded and even Yaya Toure has not been the irrepressible driving force from midfield that we have seen in the past. In fact the only player to exceed expectations in a City shirt this season has been Edin Dzeko, who is the club's leading scorer with 12 goals from 11 starts and 12 substitute appearances. Hopefully Demba Ba rather than Fernando Torres will get the start for Chelsea, otherwise it's fair to say that the bigger threat from the visitors will come from their midfield. Juan Mata has been the one stand-out performer for the Blues this season, Eden Hazard's stunning goal against Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday rekindled memories of how the Belgian started the season, and expect another huge contribution from Frank Lampard if he is given another chance to prove what folly it would be not to offer him a new contract when his current deal expires in the summer.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Chelsea have the better head-to-head record in league meetings between the sides with 55 wins to 43 by City and 37 games being drawn. At the Etihad Stadium and its predecessors, City have 30 wins to 21 by Chelsea, with a further 16 meetings ending up all square. As already mentioned, the earlier meeting between the sides at Stamford Bridge in November produced one of the most boring goalless draws it could ever be your misfortune to watch. The corresponding match last season on Mar. 21 finished in a 2-1 win for City. Gary Cahill gave the visitors the lead on the hour, but Sergio Aguero levelled from the spot 18 minutes later and Samir Nasri completed the comeback by grabbing the winner five minutes from time. City have won the last three meetings between the sides on this ground, with Chelsea having won four in a row here prior to that. You have to go back to April 1994 to find the last draw between these two sides in Manchester.
0' FORM GUIDE
City sit in second place, with 53 points from 26 games, four more than Chelsea, but 15 adrift of leaders Manchester United. Roberto Mancini's side have collected 30 points at home, with their only defeat in front of their own fans being to the neighbours down the road. The 11 goals they have conceded at home is the fewest in the Premier League. City lost their last league game at Southampton, turning in arguably their worst performance under Mancini, and have dropped seven points in their last three games. With a victory, Chelsea can go four points clear of fourth-placed Tottenham, who play at West Ham on Monday night. The 24 points they have collected away from home ranks second only to leaders Manchester United and they are also the second highest scorers on the road. Chelsea hammered Wigan 4-1 last time out in the league, but they are going through an indifferent run of form which has seen them win three, draw two and lose two of their last seven. They lost their last away game, 3-2 at Newcastle.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is again doubtful with the calf injury that has kept him out for four matches. Midfielder Gareth Barry faces a fitness test on the ankle injury that forced him off in the FA Cup win over Leeds while Micah Richards (knee) remains sidelined. Frank Lampard is back in the reckoning for Chelsea, having been spared Europa League duty on Thursday and Ashley Cole and Branislav Ivanovic are also likely to return. The visitors' only certain absentee is Oriol Romeu, who is out with a long-term knee injury.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Taking charge of today's game is Andre Marriner, who was appointed to the select group of referees in 2005. The West Midlands whistleblower has administered 49 cautions in his 16 Premier League outings to date and has yet to show a red card. In fact, the last player he dismissed was Stoke's Ricardo Fuller at Chelsea in March, some 31 games ago. His assistants this afternoon are Darren Cann and Darren England, while Mike Jones is the fourth official.
