Newcastle United vs. Southampton
Minute Commentary
90' NEWCASTLE 4-2 SOUTHAMPTON
Well what an advert for the Premier League that was. Six goals, end-to-end football, and no shortage of talking points. Mauricio Pochettino's men started the match like a dream, with a goal from Schneiderlin, before Newcastle turned the screw in the last ten minutes of the first half with a tap-in from Sissoko and a stunner from Cisse. Saints responded after the break with a well-worked goal from Rickie Lambert - his 100th goal in English football - and for a few minutes it looked like they were going to be the team to run away with it. However, a Yohan Cabaye penalty and an unfortunate own goal from Jos Hooiveld meant that this was the Toon's day. For the neutral, though, this was a day for English football.
90' GAME OVER
The full-time whistle blows, and an entertaining game comes to an end. It is the Magpies that walk away with the win in a six-goal thriller.
90' FOUR MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME
Four minutes to be added on here, and Alan Pardew decides to waste a few seconds by replacing Yoan Gouffran with Vurnon Anita. His team have deserved the three points this afternoon.
90' POOR TOUCH
Southampton have made a decent fist of trying to get back into this match, but it looks like it isn't to be their day. A lovely ball by Jason Puncheon, who has been surprisingly quiet today, finds Ramirez running in on goal, but his first touch is awful, giving the Newcastle defenders enough time to get back and snuff out the danger.
87' FRUSTRATION BOILING OVER
Gaston Ramirez is not a happy chappy here. He dribbles into the box, ghosting past two Newcastle defenders, before seemingly being brought down by Tiote. Chris Foy remains unmoved, and the Uruguayan decides to have words with him. Whatever he said, it clearly didn't do the trick as he is rewarded with a booking.
82' NEWCASTLE 4-2 SOUTHAMPTON
Oh dear. Saints fans will be cursing their luck here - the last two goals they have conceded have been just cruel. A great run by Davide Santon down the left ends with a cross into the box that Daniel Fox doesn't deal with, striking the ball into the midriff of Hooiveld, and seeing it trickle over the line. Alan Pardew will take that though, make no mistake about it.
81' GOOOAAALLL!!!
After a mix-up at the back, Hooiveld puts the ball in his own net to give Newcastle a commanding lead!
79' CRUCIAL BLOCK
After another rampaging run by Moussa Sissoko, the ball falls for Gouffran ten yards out, but the striker's effort is well blocked by Jos Hooiveld.
77' NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTION
Yohan Cabaye is given a standing ovation as he departs the field. James Perch is the man coming on in his place.
73' ANOTHER HANDBALL
Straight after Cabaye's penalty, Gaston Ramirez thinks he is in on goal, but he is penalised for deliberately handling the ball in the process. He hit the bar with his effort, anyway.
70' NEWCASTLE 3-2 SOUTHAMPTON
A free-kick from deep found Mathieu Debuchy at the back post, and as the defender tried to loft the ball back across the six-yard box, it hits the outstretched arm of the unfortunate Yoshida. If you're a Magpies fan, you think it's a penalty - if your a Saints fan, you're calling for Chris Foy's head. As for me, my backside will remain well and truly on the fence.
69' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Yohan Cabaye sends Artur Boruc the wrong way with his spot-kick!
67' PENALTY TO NEWCASTLE
It's a case of third time lucky for the home fans as Maya Yoshida is adjudged to have handled in the area.
65' FIRST CHANGE
Pochettino is the man to make the first substitution, with Gaston Ramirez replacing Steven Davis.
62' MIDFIELD POSSESSION
Newcastle have decided to just take the sting out of the game in the last couple of minutes, because Southampton have started this half just like they started the first. The hosts are content to spread the ball around in the middle third of the pitch and make their opponents chase shadows.
59' SOUTHAMPTON ON TOP
This really has been a fabulous game - you can't catch your breath here. This time it is Lallana who chances his arm, but his effort from the edge of the box flies just wide of the far post.
54' ALMOST ANOTHER!
Whatever Mauricio Pochettino said at the break, it has worked. His side are a matter of inches away from taking a dramatic lead. Again Nathaniel Clyne is instrumental, turning Santon inside out, before delivering a cross into the box which is met by Lambert, who delayed his run, but the forward's powerful header is just the wrong side of the post.
51' NEWCASTLE 2-2 SOUTHAMPTON
If that Lambert free-kick was a warning for the Magpies, they didn't heed it. Adam Lallana releases Nathnaniel Clyne down the right, and the full-back's low cross is clinically dispatched by the man Alan Pardew signed when he was manager of Southampton.
50' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Rickie Lambert scores his 100th goal in English football to make it 2-2!
48' SUPERB STOP
A clumsy foul gives Ricky Lambert an opportunity to shoot on goal from just outside the penalty area. That he does - getting it up and over the wall, but Rob Elliot denies him with a magnificent one-handed stop on the stretch. That should serve as a warning to Newcastle.
46' BACK UP AND RUNNING
We are back in play here - will it be the first time this season that Newcastle get three points after conceding the first goal?
45' NEWCASTLE 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON
What a magnificent 45 minutes of football that was. It was the visitors who started much the brighter, Morgan Schneiderlin leaving the majority of the Sports Direct Arena shell-shocked with a great volley just three minutes in, but Newcastle responded brilliantly. The rest of the half was mainly played on the edge of the Southampton area, and two goals in the space of ten minutes completely turned the game on its head. The two new signings Gouffran and Sissoko combined nicely for the first goal, but the second from Papiss Cisse was a little bit special - not quite as good as his strike last season against Chelsea, but it's up there. More of the same in the second half please!
45' END OF FIRST HALF
Chris Foy brings an enthralling first period to a close, with Newcastle going into half-time leading 2-1.
45' COLOCCINI OFF
Three minutes to be added at the end of this half - unfortunately for the hosts, Fabricio Coloccini has picked up an injury he can't shake off, and he is replaced by Mapou Yanga-Mbia.
45' NEWCASTLE 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON
Pick. That. One. Out. Davide Santon hoists a hopeful ball towards Yoan Gouffran, who misses his header, and it subsequently falls for Cisse, 30 yards from goal, and the man from Senegal lashes a first time volley up and over the despairing dive of Artur Boruc.
43' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Newcastle have turned this match on its head - an absolute worldie from Papiss Cisse!
41' PERSISTENT FOULS
Southampton will be desperate to get in level at half-time here - they have lost their way in the last half-hour or so. Luke Shaw becomes the second man to go into the referee's notebook after he drags Gutierrez down - that wasn't the youngster's first offence today.
37' LUCKY BOY
In the build-up to that goal, Cheick Tiote might have been a tad forunate to avoid a booking, or even worse, as he followed through with his studs raised, and caught Jay Rodriguez. The Southampton striker did the Ivorian a favour there by not making too much of it, but you would have expected a card there.
34' NEWCASTLE 1-1 SOUTHAMPTON
What an impact this man has made since arriving in the North East! The Frenchman is on hand to tap into an empty net after good work by Yoan Gouffran down the left. The latter's shot across goal was tipped into the path of Sissoko by Artur Boruc, and he simply couldn't miss.
33' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Moussa Sissoko gives the Magpies a deserved equaliser!
29' VISITORS UNDER PRESSURE
It was a nightmare start for Newcastle, but Alan Pardew will be delighted with the way his side have pushed Southampton back in the last ten minutes. Most of the game is being played outside Saints' 18-yard line here.
27' FIRST BOOKING
Chris Foy gets his cards out for the first time this afternoon, and Jay Rodriguez can have no complaints. The striker sees Jonas Gutierrez sprinting into space, and simply chops him down.
23' SECOND HANDBALL APPEAL
The Sports Direct Arena erupts again, with vociferous pleas for a penalty to be given. It's a copy and paste of the first one though - an acrobatic overhead kick from Steven Taylor strikes the arm of Hooiveld, but once again, the defender couldn't do anything about it, and his arms weren't raised.
19' SISSOKO INFLUENCE
Shortly after having a long-range drive tipped behind, Moussa Sissoko is again involved as he threads a pass through for Mathieu Debuchy, who is charging down the right. The latter's cross finds Yoan Gouffran who scuffs his effort, but the ball falls nicely for Cisse, no more than eight yards out. Newcastle's number nine can't quite swivel quickly enough, though, and skews it behind for a goal kick - should have scored.
15' HOPEFUL APPEAL
Papiss Cisse wants a penalty here, but it would have been incredibly harsh. He tries to cross it from the right-hand side of the area, but his ball in is blocked by Jos Hooiveld, and deflected on to the arm of Schneiderlin. His arm was by his side, and he didn't know anything about it - good decision.
12' HOME POSSESSION
Newcastle are just starting to get their foot on the ball a bit more here - they are trying to find the right pass on the edge of the area, but the creativity of Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote has been snuffed out by the tireless work-rate of their opponents so far.
8' SAINTS COMPOSURE
What a revelation Southamptoon have been in 2013! Mauricio Pochettino says he wants his to team to press high up the pitch, and boy are they responding. They haven't let the Magpies setlle yet, and they look extremely comfortable on the ball. Great stuff so far - Newcastle have a real job on their hands here.
4' NEWCASTLE 0-1 SOUTHAMPTON
Er, the Newcastle fans aren't in such buoyant mood now. The visitors have started the game brilliantly, and they have their reward inside the first three minutes. Jack Cork chips a lovely ball from out wide to the edge of the box, and Ricky Lambert beats Steven Taylor in the air to flick it on for Morgan Schneiderlin, who finishes with considerable aplomb. He simply turns his marker and lashes a first time volley beyond Rob Elliot. What a start!
3' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Morgan Schneiderlin has given Southampton an early lead!
1' KICK-OFF
It is Newcastle who get us underway here. As you would expect, the Sports Direct Arena is absolutely bouncing.
0' FULL TEAMS
Newcastle: Elliot, Coloccini, Santon, Taylor, Debuchy, Sissoko, Cabaye, Tiote, Gutierrez, Cisse, Gouffran. Subs: Alnwick, Anita, Yanga-Mbiwa, Perch, Marveaux, Ameobi, Obertan. Southampton: Boruc, Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Cork, S Davis, Rodriguez, Lallana, Lambert. Subs: K Davis, Fonte, Ramirez, Fox, Ward-Prowse, Mayuka, Puncheon.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Keeper Tim Krul is a doubt for Newcastle after picking up an ankle injury in Thursday night's Europa League second leg against Metalist Kharkiv, while midfielder Cheick Tiote could recover from an illness in time to start. Davide Santon, who has been hampered by an ankle problem, trained this week, so may return. Luke Shaw and Gaston Ramirez, who missed the 3-1 win against Manchester City two weeks ago, are likely to return for Southampton, but Jose Fonte is a definite absentee with a knee injury. Striker Guly do Prado is a major doubt for the visitors.
0' REF WATCH
The man in the middle today will be Lancashire's Chris Foy. The 50-year-old, who has been refereeing in the Premier League for over a decade, will be taking charge of his 18th Premier League match this season. He has a lenient record this season when it comes to cards – an average of just 1.94 given out a game, with 33 yellows and no reds. That's what we like to see Chris – let the game flow.
0' STEADY SOUTHAMPTON
The last time the Saints won away at Newcastle was in 1997, when Matt Le Tissier (obviously) bagged the winner in a 1-0 victory. However, now appears to be as good a chance as any for Southampton to triumph at their bogey ground for the first time in 16 years. They have lost just one of their last nine Premier League games – that loss coming at the hands of leaders Man Utd at Old Trafford – a result Sir Alex Ferguson said his team were lucky to get. Pochettino's men have steadied the ship away from home as of late, as well. After losing their first five games away from St Mary's Stadium, they have now only lost just once in six on their travels. They may only sit three points above the relegation zone, but a win today would be a huge step towards securing another year in England's top division.
0' MAGPIES RENAISSANCE
It is fair to say that since the end of the January transfer window, Newcastle have added a bit of je ne sais quoi to their squad. The signings of French players Moussa Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran look to have transformed the fortunes of the North East club this season. The former has already bagged two memorable goals in the outstanding victory against Chelsea earlier this month, while the latter netted his first goal in the loss to Tottenham a fortnight ago. The stats are also favourable for the Toon going into this afternoon's game – they have won eight of their last nine home matches against Southampton, and 19 of Newcastle's 27 points this season have been won at home.
0' PREVIEW
Unpredictability has been an underlying theme for both of these sides throughout the course of this season. Who would have thought at the start of the campaign going into this fixture that Southampton would be a place better off than today‘s hosts? When Alan Pardew signed and eight-year contract at Newcastle, did anyone really see the downturn in form they have had in the last seven months coming? And when Saints boss Nigel Adkins was ruthlessly sacked by chairman Nicola Cortese a few weeks back, who would have expected new manager Mauricio Pochettino to get the fans on board, and behind his methods, so quickly? The most unpredictable teams in the most unpredictable league in the world – they will be kicking off in just a few hours time. Don't you just love it?
